The attitudes of education and rehabilitation students towards people with intellectual disabilities are very important, because they aim to be future professionals who will provide educational and rehabilitation treatment to these people, as well as advocates for their rights and needs. This study aimed to analyse the attitudes of students towards people with intellectual disabilities and to determine whether their attitudes differed based on self-assessments and sources of knowledge about intellectual disabilities, ways of getting to know a person with intellectual disabilities, and number of years of education. The study involved 100 students undergoing their first cycle of studies at the Faculty for Special Education and Rehabilitation, University of Tuzla. The Mental Retardation Attitude Inventory-Revised (MRAI-R) and a general questionnaire were used in this study. The results show that students express positive attitudes towards people with intellectual disabilities, they are...
The study investigates the structural differences, under quantitative and qualitative aspect, between the attitudes toward children with intellectual disability and the teachers in the normal school and special school. The method used is the Attitude Inventory towards the intellectual disability (Mental Retardation Attitude Inventory -MRAI-R, revised, Antonak and Harth, 1994). This tool allows defining the attitudes of the subjects regarding the integration of persons / pupils with intellectual disability into the school and social environment. The importance of the research lies in the fact that, by knowing the attitudes of the teachers, it might, subsequently, contribute effectively to change them, so as to optimize the therapeutic intervention to students with intellectual disability.

The present study aims to explore classical and modern prejudice towards individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) among a sample of Italian university students who attend Social Sciences and Physical Sciences degree courses. A convenience sample of 280 university students (51.4% doing Social Sciences degrees, and 48.6% doing Physical Sciences degrees) participated in this research. Two separate hierarchical multiple regression analyses were carried out to examine the relationship between the variables in order to identify which predictors affect the expression of prejudice towards people with ID. The results showed that classical prejudice was predicted by males, no prior work experience with individuals with ID, Big Five, personality traits such as agreeableness and openness, low reactive empathy, reduced quality of contact, and intergroup anxiety. Modern prejudice was predicted by males, students who attended Physical Sciences degree courses, no prior work experience with individuals with ID, low parallel and reactive empathy. Limitations and practical implications are discussed.
Attitudes towards disability in Higher Education
Anuario de PsicologĂa
In this article, we present data concerning the attitudes towards disability of students in Higher Education (HE) at a Spanish university. This research is part of a wider project designed to understand these attitudes at other Spanish universities and Brazilian and Portuguese Universities. The total sample was composed of 609 students (Mean age: 24.41; SD: 9.84), including undergraduates (85.7%) and postgraduates (14.3%) from different faculties at the University of Barcelona. Seventy-seven percent of the sample were women, and 6.1% had some disability. The first part of the instrument used collects sociodemographic information. The second part contains 43 statements grouped in three blocks: 17 relating to the biological model of disability, 15 to the social model, and 11 to the metaphysical perspective. The results showed the predominance of agreement with the social and biological conceptions of disability. Moreover, significant differences were found among the students' atti...

This study adopted a descriptive research design and used interaction with a disable person (IDP) scale to understand the attitude of student professionals toward persons with disabilities and also to find what influences the attitude of future professionals. The primary aim is to learn more about the way students of three different professions generally view persons with disabilities and feel about interacting with this population. The interaction and attitude will create an impact on their practice of the profession in the future. The findings indicate that the students of three differ...
Attitude Towards Persons with Intellectual Disability Scale
2018
The purpose of this study is to revise and further develop an attitude towards person with intellectual disability scale (APIDs). The further development of this scale was mainly based on Community Living Attitude Scale (CLAS) and Attitude towards Intellectual Disability Questionnaire (ATTID). The study examined the psychometric properties of the proposed measuring instrument in terms of its factorial validity and internal consistency reliability. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the proposed five-factor model did not fit the data well. Exploratory factorial analysis was then conducted to reexamine the structure. The results suggested a three-factor structure, i.e. sociality, capacity, and protection. The internal consistency reliability was good for sociality and capacity but needs further improvement for protection. The cultural and social landscape within a population affects the factorial structure an attitude scale. The use of APIDs was also discussed.
Causal Analysis of Attitude Formation Towards Persons With Intellectual Disabilities
The Japanese Journal of Special Education
The purpose of the present study was to cLarify causal relations among latent variables (constructs) obtained from implementing exploratory factor analysis and cluster analysis. We applied an analysis of covariance structure to the causal model of attitudes towards persons with intellectual disabilities. The participants, 415 university students, completed a survey composed of 28 items related to attitudes towards persons with intellectual disabilities, 12 items concerning relations with children (persons) with intellectual disabllities during the respondents' elementary and middle school years, 8 items concerning participants' attributes, and a free-answer question, Significant causal coeencients were obtained among the respective latent variables. The main results were as follows: Experience in integrated education during elementary school was not necessarily positively utilized in attitudes formation. Talking at home about children with intellectual disabilities had a positive influence on attitude formation. AMrmation of the abilities of persons with intellectual disabilities had more positive influence. Volunteer work and discussion related to persons with intellectual disabilities after middle school graduation were utilized positively in attitude formation.
Research in Developmental Disabilities, 2020
Background: This study examines undergraduate students' attitudes towards people with intellectual disability (PWID) in relation to their frequency of contact with people with intellectual disability, the quality of this contact, and their knowledge of intellectual disability (ID). Method: The study sample comprised 1001 undergraduate students (458 male students [46 %]; 543 female students [54 %]; mean age = 20.6 years) from Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The Arabic version of the Mental Retardation Attitude Inventory-Revised (MRAI-R) was used to examine attitudes towards PWID. Results: Knowledge about ID, quality of contact with PWID, and gender were significant predictors of attitudes. Frequency of contact, as well as having relatives with a disability, were not significant predictors of attitudes. No differences were found between participants from the two countries. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that high-quality contact is a major predictor of students' attitudes. Therefore, society needs to ensure more than just simple forms of contact between people with and without disabilities.

The paper is covering a survey aimed to find out what is the publicity and the interest of society in people with disabilities, what is the public attitude of students towards this stigmatized group of people, are there any already formed stereotypes and positive stigmas of the people with disabilities, how to achieve their overall integration into society, i.e. starting from the family, through university and finally at work. We carried out surveys (questionnaires) among students from the Czech Republic and Republic of Bulgaria, as for this purpose we interviewed 100 students from both countries. This work reviews the concept of a relation between people with disabilities and the students, and the positive attitude of the latter for the purpose of integration into society. This survey uses several statistical methods. This fact increases its value and in great extent increases the possibilities of obtaining adequate and credible results. As a result of the survey, we determined th...
