Anafora, 2017
The article focuses on the adaptation strategies used by Lope de Vega in his play El Gran Duque de Moscovia y emperador perseguido (1617). This tragedy, built on material acquired from travelogues, represents the first depiction of the Russian Time of Troubles in fiction. In it, one can follow Lope de Vega's shift from preserving the factual details collected from different travel sources to creating his own Baroque story placed within a purely Catholic world, as opposed to reality. In doing this, Lope de Vega creates a fictional space filled with mystery and miracles, where Heavens can intervene and punish the guilty party, whereby restoring the original status quo. Key situations turn from illustrations of an alien world into much more general depictions, namely, that of a tyrant versus a legal monarch, and the will of a ruler versus the law. The shift into tyranny provides the story with a new narrative centre and, by following Lope de Vega's emphasis on the " Muscovian story, " discloses its universal spirit.
Genre Transformation of the Fairy Tale in Contemporary Russian Literature
Journal of History Culture and Art Research, 2017
This research is devoted to some peculiarities of structure and semantics of contemporary Russian fairy tale. The analyzed genre model is quite actual in the literature of modern turn of the centuries. It is actualized in the creativity of L. Petrushevskaya, A. Kabakov, B. Akunin, M. Fray, D. Bykov, etc. This is connected with the universality of themes and problems and the dynamics of structure of genre analyzed. Modern literature process suggests the use of various genre forms (including fairy-tale one) in the context of realization of game strategies of world construction with the deconstruction principle domination. The usage of the most productive for such kind of research methods (structural-semantical and comparative ones) gives grounds for understanding the specifics of realization of deconstruction principle through the variety of forms and meanings. For example, the scheme of "genre memory" is widely used in contemporary fairy tale. If that scheme deals with the sphere of semantics, then structural components are actively deconstructed (e.g. fairy tales by L. Petrushevskaya). If the meaningful fairy tale composition models are actualized, then the semantic component is widely transformed (e.g. Moscow Fairy Tales by A. Kabakov). The most important peculiarity of contemporary fairy tale is the integration of fairy tale, legendary, mythological and literary plots to the one game system. The result of this is on the one hand travestying of the iconic plots, on the other hand achieving the new meanings due to including context mechanisms.

One of the important tasks of creating the Corpus of Russian Short Stories of the first third of the 20th century is to identify and describe the changes that took place in the Russian language and in stylistics of Russian literature in the chain of dramatic events of the World War I, the February and October Revolutions, and the Civil War. The essential principle for creating the corpus is an attempt to include in the database literary texts of the maximum number of authors who wrote stories in 1900-1930. The article describes the principles of writers and text selection for the annotated subcorpus containing stories of 300 Russian prose writers and considers the list of linguistic and stylistic parameters proposed for studying the language of literary texts in synchrony and diachrony.
Umjetnost Rijeci, 2016
This paper discusses a new tendency in contemporary Russian fantastic fiction: the transformation of the personalities of Russian writers and poets into literary characters. The analysis shows similar patterns of fantastic transformation in Bulgakov, Akhmatova and Gumilev. These patterns include the use of the biographic and auto-biographic myths about them, the transformation of their writings into storages of compositional devices, plots, motifs and characters, which are freely manipulated and projected onto their authors' lives. Becoming literary characters, they often continue to write fiction or poetry. The newly created texts may enter into discussions with the texts-prototypes, confirming, contesting and/or recreating them.
The Genre of Ukrainian Classical Novel as a Problem
Zagadnienia Rodzajów Literackich, 2023
The article is devoted to the novel genre in Ukrainian literature. The authors offer an answer to the question of why the genre of the novel appeared so late in Ukrainian literature and what genre features the Ukrainian classic novel has. The article examines the historical background of the genre development in 19th-century Ukrainian literature, which developed in the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires. In these empires, there were different conditions for the development of Ukrainian literature: quite liberal in Austria-Hungary and very limited in Russia due to the ban on the Ukrainian language. The article examines and analyzes in more detail three reasons explaining the late emergence and establishment of the Ukrainian novel: 1) language, 2) subject matter, and 3) literary terminology. The novel as a "non-canonical genre" (Bakhtin) requires a direct dialogue with contemporariness, and such a dialogue was impossible in the case of the 19th-century Ukrainian novel because the language of Ukrainian intellectuals at that time was not Ukrainian. In the Russian Empire, it was French or Russian, and in Austria-Hungary, it was German or Polish. Similarly, the subject of both the new Ukrainian literature in general (Ivan Kotlyarevskyi) and the first Ukrainian novels was connected not with contemporariness, but with the heroic past, that is, with the Cossack era of the 17th century (Panteleimon Kulish, Vasyl Doroshenko). The issue of literary terminology is also problematic because Ukrainian authors defined their large prose works not novels, but "opowidannia" or "powist'", using in this case the meaning of these terms in the German tradition (Erzählung) or Polish (powieść), respectively. (Neo)mythological Elements in the Modern Russian Prose
2017
The article deals with the method of neomythologization in the novel “Surgeon” by Marina Stepnova. Taking into account that neomythologizm is an important component in the modern socio-cultural ecumene and quite a complex concept, in the novel we analyze one segment of it – the creation and killing of “God” and divine position. The protagonist of the novel, a plastic surgeon Khripunov living in the 20th century, like Hassan-ibn-Sabbah, a monk of the 11th century, is a kind of “God” that in the text is shown through the light of narcissism and the desire to gain the power. At the structural level, the demiurge is the author per se who organizes the narratological whole of the two-side text.
