Challenges of Clinical Nursing Training Through Internship Approach: A Qualitative Study
Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare, 2020
Background: Nursing education programs are designed to decrease the gap between theory and practice. It is believed that internship programs can decrease this gap. An internship program has newly been implemented in Kermanshah Nursing School. However, the efficiency of this program has not been assessed. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the challenges related to the internship education of nursing students. Methods: The study was conducted as qualitative research. The participants were eight nursing students who had at least one semester of experience in internship. They were selected through purposive sampling. Data gathering was done through semi-structured interviews, which were recorded and analyzed through a three-stage content analysis approach. For data management, MAXQDA-10 was used. Results: Out of the eight participants, three were male, and all were in the final year of their education. In total, 423 primary codes emerged after analyses, which were placed in seven categories, including: education before internship, lack of support, planning difficulties, interaction with staff, invisible evaluation, welfare defects, and professional identity. Conclusion: The study revealed the challenges of the internship program for nursing students in Iran. Some of the problems were related to educational background, others were associated with the shortcomings of the cultural aspects of the context. Therefore, it is recommended to optimize the clinical training of nursing students in the internship program by addressing these challenges.

Iranian student nurses' experiences of clinical placement
International Nursing Review, 2005
Nursing as a practice-based profession requires that student nurses learn how to become professional in the clinical environment. Many studies have addressed student nurses' clinical learning and related problems, but few have explored the whole clinical experience of being a student nurse. To understand and gain deeper insight into Iranian student nurses' lived experience of clinical placement. Five student nurses were interviewed about their clinical experience during clinical placement. The researchers analysed the verbatim transcripts using van Manen's phenomenological methodology, keeping in mind the recommended six research activities. Five themes emerged by which the phenomenon of clinical experience could be illustrated. These themes were: caring-orientated relationships, attractive aspects of clinical experience, finding oneself in the clinical milieu, being supportive to classmates, and actualizing potential. Fourteen subthemes expanded and clarified the meaning of these themes. The attention paid and acknowledgement given to 'caring' and 'knowledge' by the student nurses showed that they are progressing toward their ultimate goal of being professional nurses. The student nurses' awareness of 'what is going on there?' and also support from other significant people facilitates the students' adaptation process and guarantees this progress.

Iranian nursing students' preparedness for clinical training: A qualitative study
Nurse Education Today, 2015
Background: Clinical training plays a fundamental role in nursing students' acquisition of professional capabilities. Students' preparedness for learning in clinical setting is one of the most important factors that determine the quality of clinical training. Different studies indicate the nursing students' unpreparedness for entering clinical environment. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore Iranian nursing students' preparedness for clinical training. Method: This research is a qualitative research using content analysis approach. The participants consisted of seventeen nursing students, three nursing educators and one nurse, selected through the purposive sampling method and questioned in semi-structured interviews. The acquired data was analyzed by qualitative content analysis approach. Results: Two main themes were captured in this study; including: 1) rejection of the profession and 2) fear and anxiety Conclusion: The findings indicated that the nursing students are not psychologically prepared for internship in clinical settings. Therefore we recommend in the first place reducing students' fear and anxiety of facing the reality and preparing them for a better beginning through conducting workshops in retraining and practicing clinical skills along with a course of visiting the hospital for students' confrontation and familiarization with real environment immediately before entering into the clinical setting. In addition, after the students' entrance to the setting the clinical educators should strive to heed students' level of preparedness especially their psychological needs and condition including the extent to which they accept their profession.
