 Throughout the referral process, referring physicians have high cognitive demand.  Our cognitive framework identifies referring physicians' information needs.  EHR designs create cognitive challenges when ordering, tracking, and reviewing referrals.  Referring physicians' goals, tasks, decisions, and information needs can inform EHR (re)design.
