Improving mathematical literacy of problem solving at the 5 th grade of primary students

Journal of Education and Learning (EduLearn), 2019

This quantitative descriptive study aims to describe the Mathematical Literacy of Grade 5 of Primary Students regarding their mathematical problem-solving abilities. The samples of this study were 35 5th-gradestudents at Muhammadiyah Condongcatur Elementary School in academic year 2017/2018. The data were collected through observations and tests with five questions containing indicators of mathematical literacy regarding mathematical problem-solving abilities; two experts have validated the test instruments. Moreover, the test estimated Cronbach's alpha of 0.749 proved reliability. The data analysis in this study was carried out descriptively based on the average score, the standard deviation, the maximum score, the minimum score, the total score, and the percentage correct answer. The results showed that the mathematical literacy of the 5th-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah Condongcatur was generally at the high category (indicated by the problem-solving abilities). Students have been able to understand a problem, to use logic to describe the solution to a problem, and to choose the most appropriate solution to solve a problem.

Mathematical Literacy Skills of Fifth Grade Elementary School Students: A Case Study in Pekanbaru

JOURNAL OF TEACHING AND LEARNING IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (JTLEE)

This study aims to identify and describe the mathematical literacy skills of fifth grade elementary school students. This study was conducted in one of the primary school in Pekanbaru from January to March 2020. The type of research used was a case study. The subject of this research was 37 fifth grade elementary school students. The instrument was arranged referring to the questions issued by PISA. After the instrument were validated by two experts and tested on students, the next step was used to retrieve data. The data collected is then grouped and categorized according to the device that has been created. The results of the data processing showed that most of the subjects had not been able to answer the questions at level 4 or above, while for the answered level it was broken down as follows; the mathematical literacy achievement of fifth grade elementary school students that reached level 1 were 38%, in level 2 there were 54%, and in level 3 there were 8%. From these data resul...

Analysis Of Students’ Basic Mathematical Ability In Primary Schoolteacher Education Study Program State University Of Makassar

Proceedings of the Proceedings of the 1st International Conference of Science and Technology in Elementary Education, ICSTEE 2019, 14 September, Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, 2019

As prospective primary school teachers, students in primary school teacher education study program (PGSD) should be able to work on the subject matter of Mathematics material correctly. However, it is still often heard that the students make mistakes in counting operations during their apprenticeship in elementary schools. The same thing was also revealed that when elementary school teacher candidates took the Civil Servant Candidate (CPNS) test, there were still many graduates who had errors in completing elementary school math problems. The study aimed to: (1) describe basic Mathematical abilities of final semester PGSD students at State University of Makassar, (2) know the description of elementary Mathematics material that is considered difficult by final semester PGSD students at State University of Makassar, (3) to investigate what factors affecting the basic Mathematical ability of the final semester PGSD students at State University of Makassar. This research is a descriptive qualitative with the type of case studies to analyze the description of PGSD students' basic Mathematical ability in the academic year of 2018-2019. The population of this study was 302 students. The samples taken were 30% of the population, 105 people. For qualitative data collection, 18 respondents were interviewed. The average results of the Mathematical ability tests of final year PGSD students at State University of Makassar were 76.83 modes 80.00 with a standard deviation of 13.62.

Analysis of Student's Ability to Solve Mathematical Literacy Problems in Junior High Schools in the City Area

Infinity Journal

Mathematical literacy problems require counting and solving mathematical problems in daily life. This study aims to analyze the ability of junior high school students to solve mathematical literacy problems. This qualitative research uses a case study approach with the subject of 15 junior high school students in the city area. The instrument in this study is six mathematical literacy questions oriented to PISA test questions and interview guidelines. The data analysis technique in this study is thematic analysis. This study's results show three groups of students' abilities in solving mathematical literacy problems based on their initial abilities: Time Stone, Power Stone, and Mind Stone

PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY IN MATHEMATICS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS – A STUDY

" Mathematics is a way to settle in the mind a habit of reasoning ". Thus Mathematics is essentially a program of education which fosters higher order mental process of questioning, reasoning, analyzing, inductive and logical thinking. Hence the teaching of Mathematics attains utmost importance in any school curriculum. The main objective of the present study is to study the influence of mother occupation and age on the Problem Solving Ability in Mathematics of IX class students. Problem solving ability test developed by L.N.DUBEY was used for the present study. A sample of 300 IX class students of secondary schools in Chittoor District were taken as sample. There is significant influence of mother occupation at 0.05 level and age at 0.01 level. Employee mother IX class students have more problem solving ability in Mathematics than the non-employee mother IX class students. The administrators have to provide educational facilities to mothers. High age group IX class students have more problem solving ability in Mathematics than the low age group IX class students. The administrators have to provide counseling facilities to low age group IX class students.

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2018

The aim of this paper was to examine the ability of junior high school mathematics teachers to solve mathematical literacy base Problems (PISA and PISA-like problems) for the case Pasaman regency. The data was collected by interviews and test. As the results of this study, teacher ability in solving mathematical literacy base problems for level 1 until 3 has been good, but for level 4 or above is still low. It is caused by teacher knowledge about mathematical literacy still few.

An Analysis of Student’s Mathematical Literacy Ability of Junior High School Students

2018

This research aims to describe the ability of student’s mathematical literacy consisting of four contents, namely space and shape, change and relationship, quantity, and uncertainly. Next, it is defined on which the lowest content of student's ability, how the perform of students on the process of literacy and basic skills of mathematics, and what causes students are not able to provide correct answers to the certain problem. By knowing where the weaknesses of students on certain mathematical literacy content will make us better know which content should be more taught. This research used the qualitative descriptive method, with research subjects consisting of six students of class VII SMP Negeri 2 Pacitan which selected using purposive sampling. The instruments which used to explore the ability of mathematical literacy of students in the form of written tests followed by interviews. The results showed the ability of mathematical literacy in term of space and shape content of 13...

An Analysis of Mathematical Problem Solving Ability of High Capability Students of the Islamic Elementary Schools at Sumedang

2014

We often face problems, such as: tasks, questions, or obstacles which cannot be known how to solve soon; it is difficult to avoid by human being. Mathematical problem solving is an exercise for students to face non routine things and how to try to solve them. One of the programs which was held by the Religion Ministry that has a goal to produce human resources who are capable of solving daily life problems is Kompetisi Sains Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic Elementary School Science Competition) in level sub district, regency, province, and nation. The skills which were competed in this program were Mathematics and Science. This research aimed to study the students' skills of KSMI 2014 at Sumedang in answering question items of problem solving. The subject of this research was 57 students of 57 Islamic Elementary Schools who were selected by each school and considered having high mathematical problem solving skills. This competition was held in April 2014. The examined contents were Arithmatics, Geometry, and Data and Measurement. The result of this analysis of the students' answers informed that generally the students still felt difficult to solve the problems, especially in Geometry.
