It situates this cultural phenomenon at the intersection of a prior tradition of heterodoxy in India as well as the globally proliferating memetic culture. The essay argues that the speech is distinguished by a logic of repetition with difference both in its parodic/satiric text as well as through its medium that allows the text to repeat at new sites creating new meanings.

Internet memes are phenomena that rapidly gain popularity on the Internet which construct intercultural discourse. Using visual rhetoric, the Internet memes convey a set of symbols and ideals that express socio-political structure represented on the Internet. The story of memes is crucial in understanding the digital culture along with revealing the identity of an Internet subculture, as well as in analyzing the impacts of this cultural artifact. This study analyzes the nature and functions of internet memes and its contribution to formulate a new cultural discourse. The findings have been instrumented to illustrate how memes operate as rhetoric to explore the intercultural communication and identity construction prevalent in representative cyber-culture. It has specially been targeted to inquire the inter-textual nature of memes which are created and disseminated by the Bangladeshi Facebook prosumers. In addition, the study makes a comparison of theoretical approaches to the study of memes, including visual rhetoric approach which combines elements of the semiotic and discursive approaches to study the persuasive constituents of visual texts. These methods help deconstruct a sign or a text and decode possible hidden meanings through discourse analysis in terms of written texts and through semiotic analysis in terms of images. The presence of both an image (sign) and a caption (text) in an internet meme requires such a combined approach for reflective output.

VIDEO MEMES, CULTURE OF THE INTERNET & VIRTUAL PUBLIC SPHERE
2018
Sometime in May 2018, a Twitter user responded to a fellow Twitter user by sharing a GIF of a cartoon cat slapping a table, which was edited into a short video, while putting in a picture of a bongo as well as adding Super Mario World soundtrack as its music (Caldwell, 2018). Afterwards, there had been various remixes, including one where the animated cat is tapping a yellow cartoon buttocks figure, along with Bruno Mars’ tune (9Gag, 2018). While the origin of this particular rendition might be more obscure, those who had seen it before somewhere, and wanting to share it with their colleague would go to various possible social media sites where they would have to try to search for it among other irrelevant animated cat visuals, or they could possibly go to a platform that caters towards similar humorous preferences, like 9Gag. While memes have been established as a complex and creative product that emerged in the era of media convergence (Shifman, 2014 p. 2-7), the popularity of it in video form could be seen as an unconventional kind of art movement of the virtual world. In an effort to see the relation of society and cultural product, this essay would be looking at the ubiquity of Meme Videos as a cultural product in the form of artistic movement created within a transnational virtual form of a public sphere.

The word 'meme' was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book ``The Selfish Gene,' as an attempt to explain the way cultural information spreads. A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena within a mimic theme. Memes started on the Internet in 1996 with the first-ever viral sensation of a baby dancing on 'cha-cha-cha' (3D dancing baby). With its growing popularity, it has become a means of influencing the mindset of people who view, follow and share these memes. Memes have a potential to focus on real-world issues which when consumed by a user influences them to share it further thus leading to its large consumption. Memes can be denoted as; 'Amplification by Simplification' which basically means they have a potential to condense a complex political fact into a powerful, brief and an effective way which engages a large audience. Hence, it is becoming a powerful tool for communication. In the following paper, we attempt to understand how Internet memes are used to communicate political issues in India. For this, the method of content analysis will be used to observe the practice of memes and its role will be scrutinised to reflect whether it is creating a new paradigm shift in the political discourse. The amount of viewership and type of comments posted will also be a way to gauge the response of the audience. Also, by understanding the relationship between political memes and the Indian audience, we will be able to study whether these memes help in changing the perception of the audience if at all. Moreover, if they do, what are the factors which help the meme becomes an easy tool to affect the audience's political perceptions.
