Background: The quality of life (QOL) among geriatrics is a neglected issue especially in developing countries including India. It is a broad-ranging concept affected in a complex way by the individual's physical health, psychological state, level of independence, social relationships, and their relationships to the environment. Background: Quality of life among elderly needs assessment as they are the growing population nowadays and also are more vulnerable to many morbid conditions. Objectives: The objective of this study is to assess different domains of quality of life and its relationship with socio-demographic factors. Methods: A Community based study was done among 153 persons aged 60 years and above from 13.06.2018 to 20.06.2018 in the rural field practice areas of Department of Community Medicine, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore Karnataka. Background: Ageing is an inevitable developmental phenomenon bringing along a number of changes in the physical, psychological, hormonal and the social conditions. These changes are expected to affect the quality of life of the elderly. Methods: In the rural area, cross--sectional community--based study was conducted among elderly population aged 60 years and above. WHO Quality of Life BREF (WHOQOL BREF) questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. Results: Among the study population, the mean perceived overall quality of life scores were 62.1±16.4 and the mean perceived overall health status scores were 59.8±17.4. Males were found to have better social relations compared to females. Among <70 years better physical domain scores were seen compared to ≥70 years. Introduction: Aging is a universal process and it affects every individual, family, community, and society. It is a normal, progressive, and irreversible process. Objective: To assess quality of life among elderly people at old age home of Makwanpur district, Nepal. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 82 elderly people in old age home using complete enumeration sampling. A structured interview session was conducted by using WHOQOL-BREF tool. Data analysis was done in SPSS version 20 using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Inferential statistics such as Chi square test was used to determine association. Results: Out of 82 respondents, majority of the respondents perceived QOL as neither poor nor good. Among total respondent's, 36.6% were satisfied with overall perception of health. Also the study revealed the mean score was found higher in physical and psychological domain (50.609±11.75) and 50.304±12.13 respectively. The overall quality of life was found to be 71.292 which is good quality of life. There was significant association of age and religion with physical domain. Conclusions: The study concludes the overall quality of life was good among elderly. The mean score was found to be higher in physical and psychological domain in comparison to environmental and social relationship domain. Significant association was found in physical domain with age and religion.

Background: The assessment of quality of life (QOL) is a particularly important public health tool for the elderly in an era when life expectancy is increasing. Objectives: To measure the Quality of Life among the elderly and identify its determinants. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 220 elderly residing in rural areas of Dehradun district after taking written informed consent. Multistage random sampling was done to select the study subjects. Standardized WHO questionnaire on QOL for the elderly (WHOQOL-OLD) was used to assess the QOL. Statistical analyses were done by SPSS-22. Results: Out of 220 subjects, 55.5% were females and the rest were males. Maximum percentage of respondents were in the age group of 66-75 years (46.4%). Introduction: Quality of life in elderly population of rural area is a neglected area in developing country. This study aims to assess the quality of life and its associated factors among elderly population residing in rural areas. Materials and Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted among 221 elderly people from five villages in the catchment area of Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences using Systemic Random sampling technique from March 2019 to June 2019. Quality of Life Scale developed through the World Health Organization (WHOQOL BREF) was used to collect data about quality of life, and sociodemographic details were also collected. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS version 21 and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of our study population was 69.74±8.43, with males around 46.2% and females around 53.8%, around 80.1% illiterate and 76.92% belonging to socioeconomic class V. The overall QOL score of each domain were Physical domain 35.82±11.97, psychological domain 41.65±13.27, social 33.57±17.26, and environmental domain was 46.24±11.24. Musculoskeletal disorder was associated with physical and social domain scores and Diabetes status was associated with social domain scores. Education status and marital status was significantly associated with each domains Conclusion: The study revealed environmental domain had higher QOL score and physical and social domain QOL scores were equally less. Newer policies and improvised programs should be considered to enrich the quality of life in elderly people of rural community. Further in depth studies can help to assess further more influential factors affecting QOL in elderly.
Quality of Life among Elderly Residing in Urban Area-A Pilot Study
Background: Aging is a natural process involving all human beings within society universally. Due to the quiet vulnerability of the elderly people, they may suffer from various disabilities that threaten their autonomy. Quality of life among the elderly people is a growing issue since it represents the health and well-being status among the inhabitants placed. Methods: A descriptive survey was conducted among 50 elderly people residing in urban areas of Belagavi. Using the WHO QOL-BREF questionnaire on Quality of Life, data was collected. Consent was taken from Participants. Results: The majority 26(52%) of the participants were had low level of quality of life and remaining 24(48%) of participants were had high level of quality of life. Conclusions: QOL score among elderly was found to be average. The scores of social relationships were low for both male and female elderly subjects. This implies an urgent need for health educating the elderly with regard to their social and physical group recreational activities that will build their self-confidence and thereby improving their QOL.
