Introduction: Dengue and typhoid fever are different entities with overlapping signs and symptoms which are indistinguishable and there have been few reports of co-infections from endemic areas. The resemblance of symptoms makes accurate clinical diagnosis and treatment difficult. Both are major health problems mainly during monsoon and co-infection, if not timely diagnosed and treated can be fatal. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of typhoid fever among patients diagnosed with dengue at a tertiary care centre. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done among patients of age >15 years with dengue fever attending the medicine outpatient department in a tertiary care centre from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022. Ethical approval was taken from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number: 466/2020). Convenience sampling was used. Patients with other risk factors for febrile illness were excluded from the study. Point estimate and 90% Confidence Int...

Dengue virus is the most important mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. Co-circulation of the four types of dengue viruses and expansion of dengue epidemic give rise to infection enhancement and a big expansion of clinical aspects of the disease. Besides dengue, typhoid fever is an ancient disease, have emerged as major public health problem in developing countries including Bangladesh. Here we report a case of 4 years old boy, who have developed Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever within 2 weeks of contemporaneous infection of Typhoid fever and Primary dengue fever. Dengue fever: a Wikipedia clinical review
Dengue fever, also known as breakbone fever, is a mosquito-borne infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, which results in bleeding, thrombocytopenia, and leakage of blood plasma, or into dengue shock syndrome, in which dangerously low blood pressure occurs. Treatment of acute dengue fever is supportive, with either oral or intravenous rehydration for mild or moderate disease and use of intravenous fluids and blood transfusion for more severe cases. Along with attempts to eliminate the mosquito vector, work is ongoing to develop a vaccine and medications targeted directly at the virus.
" CLINICAL SYMPTOMS, INVESTIGATION & MANAGEMENT OF DENGUE FEVER "
Dengue fever is a common tropical infection. This acute febrile illness can be a deadly infection in case of severe manifestation, causing dengue hemorrhagic shock syndrome. The geographic distribution and population densities of Aedes aegypti have increased, especially in urban areas of the tropics, because of increased numbers of mosquito larval habitats in the domestic environment. For diagnosis of dengue, most tropical doctors make use of presumptive diagnosis; however, the definite diagnosis should be based on immunodiagnostics or viral study. Focusing on treatment, symptomatic and supportive treatment is the main therapeutic approach. The role of antiviral drugs in the treatment of dengue fever has been limited, but is currently widely studied. This review article aims to explain the types of dengue fever, their symptoms, different clinical diagnosis methods and management of this disease.
Rapidly Resolving Weakness Related to Hypokalemia in Patients Infected With Dengue Virus
Journal of clinical neuromuscular disease, 2016
Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease caused by arbovirus and well known for its typical fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome. Acute hypokalemic quadriparesis is a rare presentation of dengue with uncertain pathogenesis. We aim to describe the clinical and biochemical characteristics of rapidly resolving weakness related to hypokalemia in patients infected with dengue virus. A retrospective review of the records of patients with diagnosis of dengue-associated hypokalemic weakness was performed. Demography, clinical, biochemical characteristics, and outcome of the patients were recorded during acute phase of illness. Our study cohort comprised 12 patients and all were males from urban dwelling. The median age was 34.5 years (range, 18-50). Presentation was acute onset rapidly worsening pure motor quadriparesis preceded by short lasting febrile episode. Weakness ranged from 2/5 to 4/5 on Medical Research Council (MRC) scale with generalized hyporeflexia or areflexia. The baseline serum p...

Background: Dengue fever is a debilitating viral disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, and causes sudden fever, and acute pain in the joints. Aedes Aegyptus mosquitos are responsible for dengue fever. More than 500,000 people are affected by dengue fever each year. In Bangladesh, over 15,000 cases of dengue are reported each year. It is high time to take some measures to control this viral disease. The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical manifestation of dengue fever in tertiary care hospitals. Methods: It is a prospective cross-sectional study that was carried out in the pediatric department of Dhaka medical college hospital (DMCH) over one year and was conducted with 106 patients. Results: The finding had females dominant over males. Minimum and maximum ages were 1 and 14 respectively. All patients (106, 100%) had fever. Around one-third of the patients (34,32%) had headaches. Patients had experienced rash and vomiting. The Tourniquet test came out positive for about one-...
A Study of Clinical Profile of Dengue Fever in a Tertiary Care Centre
Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences, 2018
BACKGROUND Dengue fever is the most common arbovirus disease in urban and semi-urban areas of tropical country. Over the past three decades, there is dramatic increase in number leading to unprecedented panic amongst the general population. Hence, this study was designed to characterise the clinical profile of the outbreak. Aims and Objectives-To evaluate the clinical profile of the patient of dengue fever. MATERIALS AND METHODS All patients of age above 14 years admitted in general medicine ward at SRMS-IMS, Bareilly with acute febrile illness and positive IgM antibody were included for study. RESULTS Dengue fever affected commonly young males in monsoon to post monsoon season. Fever was present in all the cases followed by gastrointestinal symptom in 62% cases. Other clinical features were body ache/ joint pain, headache, bleeding manifestation, weakness, respiratory symptoms, rashes, pruritus and altered sensorium in 43%, 26%, 24%, 24%, 12%, 9%, 3% and 1% cases respectively. Thrombocytopenia was present in 93% cases and leucopenia in 40% cases. Altered liver function test was very common biochemical abnormality with raised SGOT, SGPT and bilirubin in 90%, 75% and 10% cases respectively. Ascites was present in 27% cases and pleural effusion in 17% cases. CONCLUSION Dengue fever is an important acute febrile illness in tropical countries affecting predominantly young males. It is commonly associated with fever, headache, body ache, gastrointestinal symptoms, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia and transaminitis. Dengue with organ dysfunction is associated with high mortality.
Post-infectious fatigue syndrome in dengue infection
Journal of Clinical Virology, 2007
Background: Although the acute manifestations of dengue are well known, few studies have assessed the long-term consequences of dengue infection. We prospectively studied the incidence and factors associated with fatigue in a cohort of patients following dengue infection. Methods: We included patients with serologically confirmed dengue infection admitted to the National University Hospital, Singapore, during a dengue outbreak from October-November 2005. The severity of dengue was graded as dengue fever, dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. A follow-up telephone interview was performed two months following hospital discharge, where a Fatigue Questionnaire was administered. The presence of significant fatigue was considered as the main outcome measure. Significance was assessed at P < 0.05. Results: One hundred twenty-seven patients, 71 (55.9%) males and 56 (44.1%) females, of mean age 36.06 years (range, 16-70; S.D., 13.722), participated in this study. Twenty-five (19.7%) patients had dengue haemorrhagic fever and the remaining 102 (80.3%) had dengue fever. In multivariate analysis, increased age, female sex, the presence of chills, and the absence of rashes were significantly associated with the development of fatigue post-dengue infection. There was no significant association between fatigue and dengue severity. Conclusions: This observation represents the first systematic evidence that dengue can result in clinical disease beyond the acute phases of infection. Host factors, such as age and sex may be important in the pathogenesis of this clinical entity.
Dengue Fever: Etiology, Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment
Asian Journal of Research in Infectious Diseases
Dengue fever (break-bone fever) is a viral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. It is caused by the Dengue virus, which is a single positive-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Flaviviridae family. Dengue fever is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas and is a significant public health concern in many countries, including`g Nigeria. The disease is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, and rash. In severe cases, dengue fever can lead to complications such as bleeding, organ impairment, and dengue shock syndrome. Diagnosing dengue fever can be challenging, especially in areas where it is endemic. In endemic locations, diagnosis is often made clinically based on the patient's reported symptoms and a physical examination. Tourniquet testing, which involves applying a blood pressure cuff and counting any petechial hemorrhages, can help in the diagnosis. Laboratory methods, including full blood count, cell cultu...
