Utilization of smartphone technology and English language, emerging English language and smartphone technology in non-academic and academic activities for learning purposes, student’s perception towards the usage of smartphone apps for English learning purposes, and smartphone apps for enhancing English proficiency are the area where this study is focused, gained from Indonesian High School students. Two hundred participants from 10th-12th grader of private high schools in Surabaya - Indonesia participated by completing an anonymous questionnaire and 16 participants of each grade were randomly selected and interviewed to gain further understanding towards the findings. in this research, the researcher focused on the students’ perception on the use of smartphone as an English learning media especially for Indonesian Secondary High School (SMA) students. This is the type of concurrent mix (combination) research whose qualitative method is more highly used than its quantitative method. Data collecting techniques in this research are survey study with Likert-scaled questionnaire, direct observation, and interview. Attitudes of Tertiary Students Towards using Smart Phone applications in learning English: the Case of the Freshmen enrolling in the General English Requirement in the University College of Applied Science

The Use of mobile phones and smart phones in education has become very popular with the emergence of this technology and its availability among both learners and teachers. The current study attempted to examine the attitudes of the freshmen students registering in the General English Requirement in the University College of Applied Science towards the use of smart phone applications in learning English. The results of the questionnaire analysis indicate that the majority of the students have positive attitudes towards using English language applications to help them learn English. Yet, student's use of smart phone applications is limited to downloading English language games and dictionaries. Therefore, both teachers and students need to be more aware of the beneficial options that these applications offer to the English language classroom.

Students' Perception on the Use of Mobile Devices in Language Learning

This study, using descriptive survey design, determined the students' perception on the use of mobile devices in learning the English language along the five macro skillslistening, reading, writing, speaking, and viewing. A modified survey questionnaire served as the main data gathering instrument. The respondents involved were 71 grade 11 senior high school students of one public school in the Division of Camarines Sur. Findings showed that text messaging and calling are the two common features of students' devices. Students perceived English Dictionary (88.7%) and English Vocabulary Games (81.7%) as the top two mobile device apps that contribute to English language learning. Among the five macro skills, the students perceived the use of mobile devices had the greatest impact to viewing with 3.97 mean score while writing ranked last with 4.54 mean score. The overall weighted mean score of 3.68, interpreted as "somewhat agree," indicates that students positively perceived some features and apps in the mobile devices would contribute to their learning of the English language.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the views of freshmen on using their smartphones in learning English as a foreign language. The study was designed based on a quantitative associational model. The data were collected from the 428 freshmen attending the English preparation programs run at _ In€ on€ u and Fırat Universities, Turkey, using "Smartphone Use in Learning Foreign Language Scale". The results showed that participants use their smartphones more frequently to engage in English listening and speaking activities than reading and writing activities. The participants also believe that smartphones scarcely have adverse effects on learning English. However, it was also found that the more time students spend online, the more they suffer from the adverse effects of smartphones in terms of language learning. Results about gender revealed that female students use their smartphones more frequently than their male peers to engage in formal language learning activities. Significant differences related to frequency of smartphone use for both formal and informal language learning purposes were detected, with the Business Administration and Molecular Biology and Genetics department students showing higher frequency. No statistically significant difference was found between students' views about using smartphones for language learning according to the types of Internet connection (Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both).

Ample researches about smartphone use problems have been conducted for years recently. Despite it, however, researches of academic use of smartphone is limited, particularly related to English classes in Indonesian context. This research was conducted to scrutinize how teachers of English take benefits of the smartphone use in the delivery of both teaching and testing activities. The usage of cell phones for language learning has grown exponentially over the last few years, moving away from traditional desktop computers. People from all walks of life have referred to this century as the century of technology. A number of people, including researchers, educators, and teachers, are contributing to this rapid growth in the technology business in some way. Additionally, the speed at which the internet connects is increasing, and the technology that makes it easy for mobile devices to access the internet is becoming unnoticeable. Smartphones, in particular, are playing a larger role in our daily lives than they ever have before. Many people use it at work, school, home, in coffee shops, and everywhere else. With a device like this, you can access the internet from anywhere and use it for a variety of things, including learning a new language. As a result, this study sets out to address a number of key issues regarding the use of smartphones in language instruction in secondary schools. The undertaken research utilizes quantitative approach and data have been collected from 130 respondents. Research data is collected using questionnaire containing 19 questions. The collected data is analysed through SPSS, version,23.00. The findings of the study may add to the body of knowledge already available on the topic of using cell phones for EFL language learning by shedding light on mobile language learning as a potential research area.
