Writing on and Reading about Cultures: Ethnography as a Literary Response to a Scientific Challenge (original) (raw)
2006
Abstract
Attention is drawn to the epistemological functioning of scientific texts in the social sciences, with an emphasis not only on the problems related to the production of such texts, but also on their reading. Taking the ethnographical text as a paradigm, the principal problems arising from its reading make it as tricky to analyze as the one––already well-studied––of the writing. It is shown that, both in the writing and the reading, the textual transmission of knowledge implies an important imaginative and linguistic effort that has some similarities with what can be observed in the writing and reading of literature.
