Significance of daylight in the design and construction of buildings

2013

Other than being highly significant for the comfort of people, an optimum use of daylight in buildings also contributes to a more rational use of heating and air-conditioning systems. Energyefficient buildings containing passive and active systems for the use of solar energy would not be possible without sunlight. The issue of significance and control of lighting in existing buildings during design and construction of new ones on neighbouring plots is increasingly considered on an international scale. Laws and regulations on the use of daylight, currently applied in Europe and the USA, are compared in the paper.

Advanced Daylighting Technologies for Sustainable Architecture Design

Abstract Daylighting has been a part of built forms throughout architectural history. Interest in using daylighting as a major design element has varied with the social and economic forces of the time. Since 1973, interest in daylighting has increased as a result of oil embargo and the understanding that electric lighting represents a major energy consumer. Energy savings achieved through the use of daylight also translate into energy cost savings from reduced electricity consumption for lighting and cooling as well as from reduced needs during peak demand periods in many building. The objective of this paper is to explain the great importance for daylighting and the role played in design process for the building and the participation in the design from the first step which effects the designer decision for dimensions, position for the opening and the building orientation, etc... Which give the psychological comfort for building user and how to control the heat transfer throw opening by using different materials and using simulation programs which give to the designer a clear image for what will be a situation all the year around? Keywords: Daylighting, Simulation, Sustainability, Daylighting Calculation.

Daylighting Natural Light in Architecture It would be tedious to name all the architects who were kind enough to provide information for the case studies in this book, in terms of the diagrams and images of their work; for this it will be sufficient to refer to the case studies where they are shown, for which I am most grateful. As to others I would like to express my gratitude to four lighting consultant practices who have provided information of their daylighting design work. These are Max Fordham, Buro Happold, DPA Lighting Consultants, and Hoare Lee; all these offices were most generous with their time and assistance.

The relationships between users and daylighting design in the 20th century architectural practice

2020

Architecture bridges between art and science, calling for a harmonious balance of multiple needs and complex issues. Considering that architecture is a man’s creation for men, this research explores it from the relationship of human factors in architecture. It specifically focuses on the relationships between users and natural light (both sunlight and daylight) in the architectural production of the 20th century. A critical review is undertaken for the case of the 20th century most famous modern architects in terms of architectural daylighting and its relationships to the users' perception and behaviour. The investigative approach relies on a literature review, in situ observations and some interviews with the current buildings’ managers. Six contemporary architects’ work composed the study corpus. The results highlight first that i) users did not perceive natural light as architects did, ii) users’ feelings could not replace the other factors contributing to the generation of t...
