Annual Journal Citation Indices: A Comparative Study

We study the statistics of citations made to the indexed Science journals in the Journal Citation Reports during the period 2004-2013 using different measures. We consider different measures which quantify the impact of the journals. To our surprise, we find that the apparently uncorrelated measures, even when defined in an arbitrary manner, show strong correlations. This is checked over all the years considered. Impact factor being one of these measures, the present work raises the question whether it is actually a nearly perfect index as claimed often. In addition, we study the distributions of the different indices which also behave similarly.

Background: Of scientometric goals are to explore scientific productivity and trend, elicit scientific collaborations and inter/intra and cross disciplinary relations within a realm of study. This is a descriptive scientometric analysis of Medical Journal of the Islamic Republic of Iran (MJIRI) from 1987 to 2018. Methods: The data were collected from 1987 to 2018 including the MJIRI annual publication number, annual growth rate (AGR), annual citation indicators, annual degree of collaboration (DC), the most active universities, and the most co-occurred keywords being used in MJIRI articles. Results: MJIRI has published 2166 articles in the field of health and medicine between 1987 and 2018, over a third of which have been published during the last five years (2014-2018). The highest and lowest AGR were recorded in 2014 (AGR=276.190%) and 2001(AGR=-28.75%), respectively. The Productivity and Characteristics of Iranian Biomedical Journal: A Scientometric Analysis

Background: Scientometrics is a discipline that analyzes scientific publications to explore the structure and growth of science. In this work, the quantitative evaluation of the productivity of the Iranian Biomedical Journal (IBJ) is reviewed. Methods: The analysis was done based on a cross-sectional descriptive and an analytical scientometric study. Data were collected from PubMed, Scopus, and Scimago Databases (2000-2017). Scopus and Scimago were used for data search and feature analysis. Analyzed scientometric indicators included the number of citations, publications, CiteScore, SJR (Scimago Journal Rank), SNIP (source normalized impact per paper), self-citation, and Q (quartile) trend. Results: The evaluation of 586 documents, published in IBJ from 2000 to 2017, revealed that most of these documents (99.7%) have been published in the areas of biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, which yielded to an upgrade in Journal Q ranking from Q4 (in 2000) to Q2 (in 2016). Conclusion: Nearly all of the scientometric indicators, evaluated in this study, were found on the rise. Therefore, a growing trend from Q2 to Q1 is predicted for the near future. It is recommended that the journal focuses on a specific subject area to improve the indicators and quality of the journal, in a timely manner.

The statistical population consisted of 5 journals of Golestan University of Medical Sciences. Data collection tool was a researcher-made checklist consisting of 28. Altmetric indices of journals were also evaluated. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics; and the results were presented in diagrams and tables. Results: All the studied journals had all "publication requirements. Only one journal had the requirement, "at least half of editorial board should be outside of the publication". Moreover, 37 percent of 105 editorial board members in the under examined journals had extra-organizational affiliation and only 8 percent were from abroad. The articles of "Journal of Gorgan University of Medical Sciences" was the most-cited article regarding citation bases. Conclusions: Journals of Golestan University of Medical Sciences need to revise their structures, especially for editorial board members namely being international, having an organizational affiliation outside the university, as well as the presence of editorial board members with further research activity and background.

Institute for Scientific Information-indexed biomedical journals of Saudi Arabia. Their performance from 2007-2014

Objectives: To compare the journal impact factor)JIF(and Eigenfactor score)ES(of Institute for Scientific Information)ISI(-indexed biomedical journals published from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia)KSA(over the last 8 years. Methods: This is a retrospective study, conducted at Alfaisal University, Riyadh, KSA from January to March 2016. The Journal Citation Reports of ISI Web of Knowledge were accessed, and 6 Saudi biomedical journals were included for analysis. Results: All Saudi journals have improved their IF compared with their baseline. However, the performance of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Neurosciences has been exceptionally good. The biggest improvement in percent growth in JIF was seen in the Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal)approximately 887%(followed by Neurosciences)approximately 462%(. Interestingly, the ES of all biomedical journals, except Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology and Saudi Medical Journal, increased over the years. The greatest growth in ES)more than 5 fold(was noted for Neurosciences and Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal. Conclusion: This study shows that the overall quality of all Saudi biomedical journals has improved in the last 8 years.

Bibliometric Analysis of the Top Ten Percent Iranian Medical Researchers Based on the I10-index and the H-index in Web of Science

The i10-index is one of the newest scientometric indicators used to evaluate researchers in any field of science. The present study analyzes the top ten percent of Iranian medical researchers using the i10-index in the Web of Science database. Materials and Methods: The present study is descriptive-analytical research conducted using a scientometric approach. The research population includes the top ten percent of Iranian medical researchers whose publications were indexed in the Web of Science database between 2011 and 2020. Descriptive and inferential statistics and i10-index were used to analyze the data using the HistCite and the BibExcel software. Then, the results were sorted in the Excel software. Finally, the h-index and the number of citations of all researchers were compared with their i10-index. Results: The findings show that in medical sciences, Iran ranked 23rd in the world, sixth in Asia, and first in the Middle East in Web of Science in the period 2011-2020, and the growth of scientific publications shows an upward trend. Moreover, there is a direct and positive relationship between the h-index and the i10-index of the top ten percent of medical researchers. This is confirmed with a correlation of 0.645. Also, a correlation of 0.269 shows a direct and positive relationship between the number of citations and the i10-index of the top ten percent of medical researchers. Conclusion: The results show that there is a positive and direct relationship between the h-index and the number of citations of the top ten percent of Iranian medical researchers with their i10-index.

Journal Impact Factors for Evaluating Scientific Performance: Use of h-like Indicators

This article introduces the Impact Factor squared or IF2-index, an h-like indicator of research performance. This indicator reflects the degree to which large entities such as countries and/or their states participate in top-level research in a field or subfield. The IF2-index uses the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) of research publications instead of the number of citations. This concept is applied to other h-type indexes and their results compared to the IF2-index. These JIF-based indexes are then used to assess the overall performance of cancer research in Australia and its states over 8 years from 1999 to 2006. The IF2-index has three advantages when evaluating larger research units: firstly, it provides a stable value that does not change over time, reflecting the degree to which a research unit participated in top-level research in a given year; secondly, it can be calculated closely approximating the publication date of yearly datasets; and finally, it provides an additional dimension when a full article-based citation analysis is not feasible. As the index reflects the degree of participation in top-level research it may favor larger units when units of different sizes are compared.

The application of currently available sophisticated algorithms of citation analysis allows for the incorporation of the “quality ” of citations in the evaluation of scientific journals. We sought to compare the newly introduced SCImago journal rank (SJR) indicator with the journal impact factor (IF). We retrieved relevant information from the official Web sites hosting the above indices and their source databases. The SJR indicator is an open-access re-source, while the journal IF requires paid subscrip-tion. The SJR indicator (based on Scopus data) lists considerably more journal titles published in a wider variety of countries and languages, than the journal IF (based on Web of Science data).
