In this paper is presented a model for lifetime prediction using Markov hidden chains method, starting from the results of eddy current non-destructive evaluation using rotating magnetic field transducer. The model is trained with previous experience in pressure tubes examination and allows the determination of probability that the tubes shall be found in different imposed states.
Nondeterministic method to the analysis of the aging effects in PWR power plant components
Instituto de Engenharia Nuclear: Progress Report, 2015
This paper presents a contribution to the study of aging process of components in commercial plants of Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs). The analysis is made through application of the Fault Trees Method, Monte Carlo Method and Fussell-Vesely Importance Measure. The approach of the study of aging in nuclear power plants, besides giving attention to the economic factors involved directly with the extent of their operational life, also provide significant data on security issues. In Brazil, for example, the Angra 1 Nuclear Power Plant invested $ 27 million to perform corrective actions in its network installation. This fact has generated an estimated operating life extension of Angra 1 in twenty years, offering great economy compared with building cost of a new plant and anterior decommissioning, if it had reached the time operating limit of forty years. The extension of the operating life of a nuclear power plant must be accompanied by a special attention to the components of the systems and their aging process. With the application of the methodology (aging analysis of the injection system of the containment spray) proposed in this paper, it can be seen the increase in the rate of component failure, due the aging process, generates the increase in the general unavailability of the system that containing these basic components. The final results obtained were as expected and may contribute to the maintenance policy, preventing premature aging process in Nuclear Plant Systems.

A Multi-State Physics Modeling (MSPM) approach is here proposed for degradation modeling and failure probability quantification of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) piping systems. This approach integrates multi-state modeling to describe the degradation process by transitions among discrete states (e.g., no damage, micro-crack, flaw, rupture, etc.), with physics modeling by (physic) equations to describe the continuous degradation process within the states. We propose a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method for the evaluation of the time-dependent transition rates between the states of the MSPM. Accountancy is given for the uncertainty in the parameters and external factors influencing the degradation process. The proposed modeling approach is applied to a benchmark problem of a piping system of a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) undergoing thermal fatigue. The results are compared with those obtained by a continuous-time homogeneous Markov Chain Model.
Failure Probability and Remaining Life Assessment of Reheater Tubes
International Journal of Engineering, 2013
In this study, a real and significant industrial problem in a steam power plant was investigated. Reheater tubes in boilers are under creep and the fireside corrosion mechanism that cause some of them to fail. Since the estimation of probability of failure (PoF) and remaining life (RL) is expensive and time consuming by the deterministic methods, in this work they were evaluated using structural reliability analysis and distribution analysis based on in-site tests and selecting an appropriate limit state function (LSF). The criterion used for this purpose is based on the creep lifetime model and uncertainties. Sensitivity analysis was also carried out in this research. The considered relationship among three affecting parameters on boiler tube failure including time, creep and fireside corrosion leads to evaluating RL besides PoF as well as obtaining PoF and RL simultaneously by selecting an appropriate time-based LSF. Most accurate results were achieved based on obtained PoF and RL values which cause to provide more reliable results for economic planning of future inspection periods. This leads to significant cost savings and operational safety improvements. A new software package, named RALA was developed via programming in Matlab. The obtained results are in good agreement with all data gained from the practical experiments in the power plant based on the previous studies.

This paper presents a model that can be implemented in a personal computer, which allows for the reliability analysis of safety systems of nuclear power plants, starting from a state transition diagram, typically employed in Markovian reliability analyses. Due to the need of considering the equipment qualified life extension, an issue of utmost importance in nuclear power plants nowadays, the classical Markovian model will not apply for at least one of the transition rates in the state transition diagram is generally time-dependent, due to equipment aging. To overcome this difficulty, the model is recast into a Markovian model by means of supplementary variables. As nuclear power plants are subject also to the so called maintenance rule, a requirement set up by the nuclear regulatory body, the utility needs to develop and present a maintenance program which is termed the Maintenance Effectiveness Monitoring Program in Brazil. The key feature here is the definition of maintenance pro...
Predicting tube repair at French nuclear steam generators using statistical modeling
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2014
Electricité de France (EDF) currently operates a total of 58 Nuclear Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) which are composed of 34 units of 900 MWe, 20 units of 1300 MWe and 4 units of 1450 MWe. This report provides an overall status of SG tube bundles on the 1300 MWe units. These units are 4 loop reactors using the AREVA 68/19 type SG model which are equipped either with Alloy 600 thermally treated (TT) tubes or Alloy 690 TT tubes. As of 2011, the effective full power years of operation (EFPY) ranges from 13 to 20 and during this time, the main degradation mechanisms observed on SG tubes are primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) and wear at anti-vibration bars (AVB) level. Statistical models have been developed for each type of degradation in order to predict the growth rate and number of affected tubes. Additional plugging is also performed to prevent other degradations such as tube wear due to foreign objects or high-cycle flow-induced fatigue. The contribution of these degradation mechanisms on the rate of tube plugging is described. The results from the statistical models are then used in predicting the long-term life of the steam generators and therefore providing a useful tool toward their effective life management and possible replacement.
Reliability Attributes and the Maintenance Rule for Nuclear Power Plant Safety Systems
The Maintenance Rule (MR) is a requirement established by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to check the effectiveness of maintenance carried out in nuclear plants. MR was consolidated in the U. S. in 1996. MR classifies Structures, System or Components (SSC) into two categories: Category (a)(2), the SSCs that reach the intended performance demonstrate that preventive maintenance is being appropriately performed, and category (a)(1), which stands for the SSCs that do not fulfill category (a)(1), and must have established goals, so that the discrepancies can be revised and then return to Category (a)(2). The purpose of this paper is to present a model that can be implemented in a personal computer, which allows the reliability analysis of nuclear power plant safety systems to be performed, starting from a state transition diagram, typically employed in Markovian reliability analyses. The classical Markovian model will not apply if at least one of the transition rates in t...
RELIABILITY OF SOME AGEING NUCLEAR POWER PLANT SYSTEMS: A SIMPLE STOCHASTIC MODEL
The random number of failure-related events in certain repairable ageing systems, like certain nuclear power plant components, during a given time interval, may be often modelled by a compound Poisson distribution. One of these is the Polya-Aeppli distribution. The derivation of a stationary Polya-Aeppli distribution as a limiting distribution of rare events for stationary Bernouilli trials with first order Markov dependence is considered. But if the parameters of the Polya-Aeppli distribution are suitable time functions, we could expect that the resulting distribution would allow us to take into account the distribution of failure-related events in an ageing system. Assuming that a critical number of damages produce an emergent failure, the abovementioned results can be applied in a reliability analysis. It is natural to ask under what conditions a Polya-Aeppli distribution could be a limiting distribution for non-homogeneous Bernouilli trials with first order Markov dependence. In this paper this problem is analyzed and possible applications of the obtained results to ageing or deteriorating nuclear power plant components are considered. The two traditional ways of modelling repairable systems in reliability theory: the " as bad as old " concept, that assumes that the replaced component is exactly under the same conditions as was the aged component before failure, and the " as good as new " concept, that assumes that the new component is under the same conditions of the replaced component when it was new, are briefly discussed in relation with the findings of the present work.
