Mispronunciations of English Found Among the Pattinjo Students of English at the 3 Universities in Makassar: A Study on Phonological Interference

This research discusseda mispronunciations among the Pattinjo native students of English at the 3 Universities in Makassar which aimed to identify the mispronunciations in pronunciation of sounds in English word and sentence similar to Indonesian language sounds, but not in Pattinjonese sounds [ʒ], [ʃ], [ծ], [θ], [z], [f], and [v], and the cause of mispronunciations produced by the Pattinjo native students of English at the Universities in Makassar. Then, it was analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used note taking as an instruments to find out more valid data. This research was conducted in order to enhance and to enrich the knowledge of the readers about the most dominant pronunciation mispronunciations produced by the students and the cause of those mispronunciations. The findings showed thatthe pronunciation of the seventhof sounds in English word and sentence similar to Indonesian language sounds, but not in Pattinjonese sounds /v/ as the most mispronunciation produced by the students and the causes were their language interference and the specific phonetic future of Pattinjo and English were [

Detecting Mispronunciations of Non-Native (L2) Post-Graduate Students of English Language Education in Indonesia

Speaker’s good pronunciation makes his/her listener comfortable, and confident to participate in the conversation and his/her mispronunciations bring implications to the listener’s awareness and involvement with the message spoken. The research was aimed at detecting the mispronunciations made by 70 non-native (L2) post-graduate students who were enrolled in the English department and were also school teachers in Greater Jakarta (including Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi [or commonly shortened as Jabodetabek]). They were given English texts to read, and recorded, and a semi-structured interview was applied. Error analysis was employed to check mispronunciations. The results showed that 43 students (61%) made mispronunciations and 27 (39%) didn’t. Mispronunciation was found on vowels by 4 students (5.71%), on consonants by 5 (7.14%), on diphthongs by 3 (4.28%), and on consonant clusters by 14 (20%). Most of the students made intralingual and global errors.

The Improvement of Mispronunciation Encountered by Most Young English Learners

Mispronunciation is a critical issue encountered by most young English learners in a second language learning that causes low spoken English proficiency, which plays important roles today. The objectives of this study were to identify the segmental changes resulted in the articulation of English mispronounced words produced by most young learners, to describe the different elements between Indonesian and English sound systems, and to explain the phonological interference of mother tongue in English mispronunciation. The Phonological Interference of Students' First Language in Pronouncing English Sounds (A Case Study on Buginese and Makassarese Students

The study indicates the phonological interferences experienced by the Buginese and Makasserese students in pronouncing English sounds and the factors affect pronunciation interference of Buginese and Makasserese students in pronouncing English sounds. The respondents were eight university students majoring English Department. They are four Buginese students which their L1 is Buginese and four Makassarese students which their L1 is Makassarese. This research was conducted through a case study design. The instruments used to collect the data were oral test by reading three different texts and interview about students' problems in pronouncing English sounds. The result of data analysis showed that there is 46 kinds manner of articulation that the students made when they produced English sounds; 32 vowels and 14 consonants. The data also showed that the main factor that influences the students while pronouncing English words is interlanguage transfer. In conclusion, both Buginese and Makassarese students similar negative transfer when pronouncing English words. The implication of this research can be expected upon teaching and learning process. The students should put more awareness toward the L1 interference in pronouncing English vowels and consonants and drill more the correct pronunciation. The study also suggests that the teachers should give an extra attention to this problem. The teacher is expected to be able to help the students to reduce the mispronounced words. The study also has some contributions to the language field where teachers/lecturers need to take a special attention of this phenomenon.

There are several Indonesian pronunciation mistakes of the Chinese students who are majoring in Indonesian. This research is aimed to explain the Indonesian pronunciation mistakes of the students, to solve those mistakes, and to give some useful suggestions about Indonesian pronunciation skills to Chinese people. The method used in this research is qualitative research. The techniques that were used to collect data are observation and interview. Analysis used in this research including: collecting data, identifying mistakes, classifying mistakes and descripting mistakes. The mistakes include vowel and consonant pronunciation. Errors in pronunciation of consonants by Indonesian, Gayo and Acehnese learners of English as a foreign language

This thesis reports on research into consonantal phoneme pronunciation errors m the English of EFL learners from three different first language groups in the province of Aceh, northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It is a qualitative study, describing the errors fOund for each first language group. Error data was collected from each participant m the language laboratory using an aural discrimination test, a word repetition test and a reading passage test, and also from interviews with each participant which were recorded on audio cassettes.
