Entrepreneurship, innovation and competitiveness: what is the connection?
International Journal of Business and Globalisation, 2017
Entrepreneurship has attracted growing interest about its role in decision-making policies capable of fostering economic and social development. There has also been an increased attention on how entrepreneurs innovate and in so doing consequently contribute to higher levels of international competitiveness. Following recourse to Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and the Global Competitive Index (GCI) data, the objective of this study involves analysis of the interlinkages between three constructs: entrepreneurship, innovation and competitiveness across the three phases of development defined by the GEM. To this end, we analyse the influence of the entrepreneur profile not only through both their intrinsic and extrinsic knowledge but also through their innovation and competitiveness across the three GEM development phases. The results convey how the importance attributed to entrepreneurship is dependent on the stage of economic development and consequently may reflect in either a positive or negative impact on this same economic growth strategy.
Entrepreneurship in Terms of the Level of Economic Competitiveness
Challenges of the Knowledge Society, 2016
Considering that from a qualitative point of view, human activity in general, has recorded a significant leap along with the debut of entrepreneurial activities, from the "creative destruction" perspective through competition of Joseph Scumpeter until present, entrepreneurial theory and practice reveals a generally accepted point of view: entrepreneurship, regardless of the form under which it is carried out, represents the engine for the market economy system, the determining factor of competitiveness growth and sustainable economic growth. Once aware of the positive impact it has on the economy and society, entrepreneurship has and is being promoted at a national level, European and global by creating, coordinating and implementing a strategic framework, legislative and financially favorable. However, the socioeconomic data analysis shows that, economies having an analog development level, record different entrepreneurial rates, that similar entrepreneurial activities have a different impact on economic development or that, as the economies record a higher development level, the interest for initiating new businesses declines. From this perspective, the purpose of this paper is to underline and promote the entrepreneurship's role as a fundamental source for increasing growth potential and national and regional development in the long term, and to highlight, based on empirical data, the interdependency, the qualitative and quantitative correlation between the entrepreneurial rate and the competitiveness level of a country.

The paper emphasizes the importance of clusters for strengthening innovativeness of enterprises, as well as the significance of clusters for the economic development of the regions/countries in which they exist. The paper will attach special significance to the importance of clusters for strengthening innovativeness and competitiveness of the Serbian economy. The Serbian Automotive Cluster will be discussed in detail. Clusters enable Serbian enterprises to remove constraining factors of their growth through cooperation. The Impact of Regional Innovative Clusters on Competitiveness
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2014
EU's policy tendencies aimed at stimulating the development of competitive agglomeration are determining Member States to steer public measures to support associative forms such as clusters or poles of competitiveness. In Romania, the crystallization of this type of association is driven by the dynamics and increasing flexibility of the business environment, the impulse from abroad and the opportunity to access European funds to finance such projects. The innovative cluster concept approach is based on the "four leaf clover" model, consisting of a partnership between four categories of stakeholders: the business, the academic and research institution, the public authority and the organizations' catalyst, in a relationship of mutual interaction. Clusters are groups of independent companies (start-ups, small, medium and large enterprises and research organizations) acting in a specific area, in order to stimulate innovative activity by promoting intensive interactions, the use of common facilities, exchanges of experience and knowledge and by contributing to technology transfer, networking and information dissemination among the cluster's enterprises. Against the background of a global financial crisis and intense competition to conquer new markets, in this paper we show how firms can gain a competitive advantage by participating in an innovative cluster that bestows important benefits upon its members. Innovative clusters are most likely to provide a new type of economy based on innovation, by means of producing dense knowledge flows for strengthening entrepreneurship by stimulating the formation of new businesses, thereby influencing the regional economic performance. By enhancing competitiveness, stimulating innovation and generating entrepreneurial initiatives in order to rejuvenate and diversify businesses, the clusters are acting as local development tools.
