Social Constructionist Perspective of the Leadership in Serbia

Engineering Economics, 2014

Over the past decades, psychological approaches to leadership backed by quantitative research have emerged. However, these approaches often show very narrow perspectives and address only a few factors. As a result, over the past few years new approaches to leadership with broader perspectives and qualitative research methodologies have been developed, but only a few scholars have as yet managed to conduct studies within this framework. The main goal of this paper is to find out more about the social and cultural context in which leaders make sense of their leadership, and how the mixture of old and new socio-cultural influences affects them. Discursive leadership, with its social and cultural focus, emerged as the appropriate model for this study. Our findings reveal the important role of communication in leadership, identify two major forces that influence Serbian managers' leadership and show their willingness to accept new values and standards in making sense of their leadership. The value of this study is its contribution to a new, broader and more meaningful way of the approach to leadership, as well as its influence on scholars, leadership experts and practitioners, primarily in non-Western and post-transitional environments. It also gives recommendations to scholars to conduct social constructionist leadership research, so that in the near future a true balance between social constructionist and psychological approaches can be achieved.

The Art of Leadership – An Understanding

Journal of human resource and leadership, 2022

The purpose of this paper is to give a general overview of the term "leadership" as used and explained by different authors and how it is situated in the context of group or organizational communication. I will attempt to give various definitions of key terms and concepts used in leadership discourse. Key questions like; what is leadership? What does it mean? Who is a leader? What does a leader do? Types of leaders and types of leadership styles or approaches will be explored. Methodology: The paper adopted a desktop methodology research design. Key words such as leadership styles, leadership, leader, leadership approaches, and leadership communication skills were used to source published papers from popular search engines such as google and scholar. The published papers were then assessed for quality and those found relevant were used to generate results. The type of data analysis method used was qualitative data analysis. Specifically, content analysis was used to identify key themes and research gaps from papers. Findings: Transformational leadership was found to be a critical fundamental tool, particularly in the concept of getting others to buy into necessary changes in the environment, such as workplaces, communities, and government institutions. Another finding is that leadership is the transformational credibility and capacity of men and women in institutions, communities, regions, nations, and international settings to influence people emotionally, intellectually, relationally, and willfully toward shared vision, purpose, mission, goals, objectives and activities. Therefore, any leader taking up this model must continue to be an inspiring presence, one who leads by example and is responsible for motivating others. It appears to be a form of leadership well-suited to these current times characterized by uncertainty, and societal instability. Unique contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: The paper sheds light on the role that leader's personal communication skills play in leadership. Transformational leadership is a theoretical dimension to leadership styles and types that merits consideration. Policy makers may prescribe the need for transformational leadership in the various policy documents such as the constitution sections which advocate for leadership and governance among public and private institutions. Leaders in all fora could apply transformational leadership in a bid to improve leader-follower performance outcomes.

Leadership and Communication: Dispelling the Mystique of a Complex phenomenon

Leadership is a fascinating phenomenon, and in many ways mysterious and inexplicable. What makes certain people leaders and others not? What characterized leaders as opposed to 'regular' folks? Is leadership inborn or acquired? Is leadership a universal, or is it local and culture and time bound? This paper grapples with the complex phenomenon of leadership by exploring some of the conventional wisdoms and assumptions about its origins, motivations and principles. Some classifications of types of leaderships are presented and various examples of historical and fictitious literary and cinematic leaders are analyzed in order to identify the central tenets of leadership. It is concluded that successful leadership is about projecting an image of aptitude and credibility and about communication skills. These two principles are best achieved in times of conflict when people are in need of guidance and reassurance. Thus, conflict is the best circumstance for leadership to flourish.
