Museum Education as an Element of Urban Heritage Management: The Example of the Museum of Krakow (original) (raw)

Protection of cultural heritage The Case of Krakow 2015

Faces of identity, 2015

The historical city is the most important asset of Krakow. The city centre is not a museum. It is a space full of life and the material heritage, animated and filled with something ephemeral, a special atmosphere conditioned by its genius loci, very important from the perspective of both, managers and users. The author shows the way the city authorities comply with their obligations under the requirements con nected with Krakow's position on the UNESCO World Heritage List, using all the forms of heritage protection, defined in the Act on the Protection and Conservation of Heritage of 23 July 2003. One of these forms is creation of the cultural park in the centre of Krakow, what evoked great interest of other Polish historical cities. Establishing the Cultural Park has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the Old Town's landscape, the historical part of Krakow inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Krakow gave an example to other historical cities on how to effectively manage the historical space that is still, above all, the heart of the city today, not only its historical centre. The concept of sustainable development of the city with the consideration for the quality of life of citizens, dominates today in thinking about the city. The sustainable development is not realised at the expense of what is authentic, old and antique, but to emphasize and highlight the beauty of what is old, historical, and unique, to see and know more about the history and the past.

Intangible Heritage of the City musealisation, preservation, education

The Historical Museum of the City of Kraków in 2016 held an international conference called “The Intangible Heritage of the City. Musealisation, Preservation, Education”. The papers collected in the book are created through debate among museum curators, museum researchers, and heritage researches from Poland, Belarus, Croatia, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Ukraine. The authors make an attempt at tackling the questions addressed during the conference: What is the intangible urban heritage? What effect does it have on local identity? How to record and include the intangible heritage to museum collections? What is the dynamic between the tangible and the intangible heritage? What role does the museum play in the preservation and safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage? What role does the intangible cultural heritage play in promotion and development of cities?

Educating Cities and Cultural Heritage: theoretical approach

Revista Nacional de Gerenciamento de Cidades, 2022

The proposal is to review the concept of Educating City, in order to better understand the cities that have this seal of approval and relate it to the actions inherent to the process of defining and safeguarding the Cultural Heritage, establishing a theoretical approach between both concepts. The aim is to discuss the approaches that enhance the dialogue between the different social agents in the solution of problems characteristic of living in cities. To do so, a bibliographical review will be made, approaching both the recent discussions on Cultural Heritage and the beginning of the discussions that raised the idea of " educative city" to become the Educating City concept. In this sense, the Charter of Educating Cities defines points that consider important documents such as the Declaration of Human Rights, among others. Finally, it is verified how the experiences in the Educating City can contribute to the preservation of the Cultural Heritage defined by social groups and communities that identify themselves with this heritage and how the conceptual meeting between Educating City and Cultural Heritage can be contemplated in the practices of Heritage Education.

Museum as service organization in Report of museum education condition. Supplement. Part 1, Chapter: Museum as service organization, Publisher: Universitas, 2014, Editor: Marcin Szeląg

In this paper I will explore a concept of museum as the service organization. Conducting service activity is often badly associated, seen as something mediocre (in Polish perspective). However, service perspective won't rob the museum from traditionally meanings, but it will enrich them giving new explanation fields and broaden the museum meaning. Museum offer is enough unique, that only it, as the service provider is able to enrich the viewer in a unique aesthetic and spiritual values. The way to perform an ancillary role towards the society is undoubtedly providing by museums the public services. The role of public service provider is harmonized with the educational function. There is a need to change the paradigm, in order to notice not only human, but also service dimension of these cultural institutions function.
