Metaphor in Business English

Silpakorn University Journal of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts, 2015

Metaphor is an important tool for developing business theories and communicating ideas in a business context. Linguistic research investigates the metaphors used in business English from various perspectives. This paper problematizes previous studies in terms of their applications of metaphor theories, the data and the methodological issues associated with metaphor identification and retrieval. These issues have profound influence on the findings and our knowledge of metaphors. It is argued that some of the studies employ a superficial view of metaphor and a more critical analysis and dynamic theories of metaphor is required. Furthermore, metaphor in multimodal communication needs more investigation. In addition, data are mainly written texts and thus spoken data require more attention in metaphor in business English research. What is more, clear criteria essential for identifying metaphorical expressions and methods for retrieving metaphors from large data sets are discussed. Only ...

Features of Functioning Economic Metaphorical Terminology in Modern Advertising Discourse

2021

Introduction. Economics and linguistics are United by the dualism of human nature: word and action. Modern society clearly demonstrates the convergence of the spheres of Economics and linguistics, as civilization develops in a digital format. Object of research: terms-metaphors in the language of Economics. The concepts of Economics play an important role in the complex process of cognition of changes in the life of society, they are implemented as new meanings of familiar words, forming a new holistic system. Close attention is paid to the functioning of economic terminology in modern advertising discourse. The subject of the study: language / speech implementation of the mechanism of influence of economic advertising forms in the mass-media economic advertising discourse. Our hypothesis. Interest in the relationship between Economics and linguistics is since Homo sapiens was replaced by Homo Economicus, a rational subject making rational decisions. In this regard, the verbalization of economic concepts is changing. We analyze only the used algorithms of metaphorization of economic concepts that influence the verbal behavior of modern man. "Dry" is an economic term, through the metaphor becomes more understandable for the ordinary native speaker. Methodology. Methods of applied linguistics for the analysis of language metaphors used in economic terminology in the mass-media economic advertising discourse. Applications of this study: applied linguistics, economic terminology, language theory, psycholinguistics, social Economics. Novelty/Originality of this study: We propose to consider the semantic field of the economic term as the sphere of existence of the latter in the subjective lexicon, and through it in the unified information base of a person as a carrier of language consciousness, which is an integral part of the individual's worldview and is formed from the complex interaction of his knowledge.

The economic discourse is essentially metaphorical, as it is observed in the analysis of its terminology, where economy is generally represented in terms of other domains. The aim of this study is to establish a relation between the metaphors found in economic discourse and the systemic economy of figurative language. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the most frequent source domains of these constructions has been carried out. The most productive type of metaphor in the discourse on economy is the socalled medical metaphor, where economy is understood as a living organism. We have analyzed a corpus of economic texts from the Spanish press, in order to identify and quantify all the "diseases of the economy " , be they terminological, phraseo-logical or purely discursive. We find relevant regularities between the lexical-ized metaphors of economic terminology and the internal economy of figurative semantics.

A Comparative Study of Ideational Grammatical Metaphor in Business and Political Texts

Grammatical Metaphor constitutes a key building block of Systemic Linguistics and has a great contribution to the theory of metaphor. This paper addresses itself to the first type of grammatical metaphor, i.e. the ideational one. In ideational metaphors, lexico-grammatical features constitute alternative ways of constructing a picture of reality. The main objective of the current work is to analyze a corpus comprising three business and three political texts.. The texts were analyzed to see how many instances of ideational metaphor are used and what the respective frequencies are, as well as the role and function of ideational metaphor in business and political texts. The analysis brought out the finding that ideational metaphor has indeed pervaded political and business texts. Nominalization has been used in both of the genres, turning the process (verb) to a concept (noun). As a consequence, the tone of the writing sounds more abstract and more formal. In business, the instances of grammatical metaphor aren't coloured and fuelled by relations of power and ideology. In politics, however, they evidence indicators of uneven power by discursive agents of dominance. Some implications accrue to these findings, as well as some qualitative conclusions, in reference to discourse and translation studies, or teachers involved in writing instruction, to name only a few.
