A Review on Palmprint Recognition

Biometrics is defined as the exceptional or individual physical properties or attributes of human body. These attributes are used to recognize each human. Any details of the person body which differs from another person to the other is used as unique biometrics data which serve to that’s person’s unique ID. Palmprint recognition being one of the important aspects of biometric technology. These palmprint recognition serves into four stages, palmprint image acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction and matching. The major approach for palmprint recognition is to extract feature vector from each individual palm and to perform matching based on some distance metrics. This paper present a detailed review on palmprint recognition approaches.

Researchers have proposed a variety of palmprint preprocessing, feature extraction and matching approaches. This paper presents a detailed review of palmprint recognition approaches.

The palmprint recognition system has active research works over 15 years, which are employed on different images resolution (High and Low). This paper shows the types of palmprint and problems facing the palmprint recognition system. Also, focus on the process of design palmprint biometrics system step-by-step, started from image acquisition, pre-processing, feature extraction and matching and give summary of palmprint databases with their characterizations and also we present some palmprint recognition techniques and some research works related to palmprint purposes.

The automatic use of physiological or behavioral characteristics to determine or verify identity of individual's is regarded as biometrics. Fingerprints, Iris, Voice, Face, and palmprints are considered as physiological biometrics whereas voice and signature are behavioral biometrics. Palmprint recognition is one of the popular methods which have been investigated over last fifteen years. Palmprint have very large internal surface and contain several unique stable characteristic features used to identify individuals. Several palmprint recognition methods have been extensively studied. This chapter is an attempt to review current palmprint research, describing image acquisition, preprocessing palmprint feature extraction and matching, palmprint related fusion and techniques used for real time palmprint identification in large databases. Various palmprint recognition methods are compared.

A biometric system is essentially a pattern recognition system which makes a personal identification by determining the authenticity of a specific physiological or behavioral characteristic possessed by the user. Biometric has gained much attention in the security world recently. Many types of personal identification systems have been developed and palmprint verification is one of the emerging technologies because of its stable, unique characteristics, low-price capture device, fast execution speed also it provides a large area for feature extraction. Palmprint recognizes a person based on the principal lines, wrinkles and ridges on the surface of the palm. The recognition process consists of image acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction, matching and result. The different techniques are used for the preprocessing, feature extraction, classifiers. The methods discussed are for the online palmprint recognition.

I. INTRODUCTION Biometric based recognition systems have been receiving much attention in the field of personal identification/verification over the past decade. Based on the traits used for identification, biometrics is broadly classified into two categories such as behavioral and physiological as shown in fig. 1. In biometric system, physiological characteristics are considered to be more reliable compared to the behavioral characteristics. Palmprint comes under the physiological category. Palmprint focuses on the inner surface of a hand, its pattern of lines and the shape of the surface. Physiological biometrics is one of the attractive fields for researchers due to its unique and stable features. One of these physical biometrics is "Palm Print". This new approach is used in personal recognition because of the powerful information that can be extracted from the palm print. The characteristics that are extracted keeping the rules of palmprint feature extraction are very important. In spite of the huge work done in this approach, the results recorded about the palm print are still uncompleted and the techniques that used in palm print feature extraction used in recognition are still continually modified. In this paper, we present a detailed background review for many techniques and methods that are used to extract features from palm print with many various methods and procedures. A comparison between these techniques is also presented.

A Novel Approach for Automatic Palmprint Recognition

In this paper, we propose an efficient palmprint recognition scheme which has two features: 1) representation of palm images by two dimensional (2-D) wavelet subband coefficients and 2) recognition by a modular, personalized classification method based on Kernel Principal Component Analysis (Kernel PCA). Wavelet subband coefficients can effectively capture substantial palm features while keeping computational complexity low. We then kernel transforms to each possible training palm samples and then mapped the high-dimensional feature space back to input space. Weighted Euclidean linear distance based nearest neighbor classifier is finally employed for recognition. We carried out extensive experiments on PolyU Palmprint database includes 7752 palms from 386 different palms. Detailed comparisons with earlier published results are provided and our proposed method offers better recognition accuracy (99.654%).

A Comparative Analysis of Different Feature Extraction Techniques for Palm-print Images

In this advanced decade, automatic identification of individuals is a significant achievement due to the high demand of security system. Hence, individual recognition using biometrics data is leading in the field of image processing. Although biometrics data analysis using thumb impression and finger-prints are very popular since many years, sometimes it leads to false acceptance and rejection if any physical change occurs in the finger ridges. There may be a high risk of hacking the biometrics data which is now a big challenge for cyber security employees.
