Dyslexia is a disorder that impacts a child negatively and, as such, should not be overlooked when it manifests in a child. As a reading and writing disorder, it always gives concern to parents whenever a child who has attained speaking and writing ages is not able to read or write as he/she ought to. Therefore, the main focus of this work is to evaluate the language disordered children with dyslexia with the view to ascertain the teachers" levels of awareness of this disorder in Port Harcourt city. This work adopted the descriptive survey protocol, and data was got from "THE CHILD" Special School, Kaduna street, D-line Port Harcourt. It is worthy of note from the data obtained in this investigation, that the teachers were obviously ignorant of what dyslexia means, and so it can be concluded that their levels of awareness of this disorder is very low. The low awareness of this condition makes it so difficult for both the teacher and the affected child to cope well with each other. This is more prominent when the child is enrolled in a mainstream school, because teachers in such schools lack competence in the various special ways to handle the children with the disorder.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate intervention strategies and their effects on performance communication disorder learners in mainstream primary schools in Kericho County, Kenya. A descriptive survey research design was adopted in a population which comprised of class three learners. Stratified sampling was conducted followed by simple random sampling were used to select the sample where 384 learners and 48 teachers and head teachers were selected. A face to face interview with class teachers and questionnaires for teachers and learners was used to collect the data for the study. Internal consistency was used to test for the reliability using the Cronbach reliability index. For this study the instruments achieved an alpha reliability coefficient of 0.733 and therefore acceptable as appropriate for use in further analysis. Classrooms are characterized by and identified with learners having peculiar eccentricities and idiosyncratic leanings towards learning. That is an indispensable feature and constituent component of almost every classroom from elementary through secondary to tertiary levels. The present study is aimed to explore and examine the prevalence of dyslexia among students at the primary level in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Reasons behind such learning obstructions are highlighted and, in effect, remedial measures are suggested to cope with such barriers to learning. The study has invoked a mixed-method design to propose sensible solutions to the impediment(s). The population of the study was English language teachers employed at and students enrolled in the primary classes of public sector schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Purposive sampling technique was used for the selection of the said sample. The screening test revealed that 8% of students scored high in it, and were identified to have dyslexia. The study concluded that elementary school teachers are not equipped to resolve multiple classroom issues because of dyslexics. Because the problems involved are classroom management, time control, to follow the code of conduct, completion of course(s) on time, and engaging the attention of the affected dyslexics. The study has recommended that teachers need to deal with the dyslectics with compassion and encouragement, and appreciate their classroom performance. Teachers and parents must also be trained for coping with such learners because they need special attention.
This regional research was carried out in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, with the aim of investigating and identifying dyslexia awareness in the area. The study focused particularly on selected primary schools in Doma Local Government Area. A structure questionnaire was prepared and distributed to fifty seven (57) primary school teachers who participated for the study. A pilot study was conducted to check the reliability of the instrument and it was analysed with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The result of HO1 show that P > 0.05, this result implies that there is a very weak positive relationship between dyslexia awareness and children learning disability in Doma local government area, while HO2 result show that P > 0.05, this result implies that regardless of the gender of students, there is no difference on learning disability in children. Based on these findings the study concludes that the lack of an extensive understanding of disability and disability rights, which are very much features of a social model construct of disability, has impacted negatively on inclusive practices and perceived understanding of who is deemed educable. Following this, a number of recommendations were made including the need for robust teacher training programmes which will raise the awareness and understanding of dyslexia and in so doing improve the learning experiences of children with dyslexia.

Learning disability is a cognitive problem that is not seen as a disability among students, unless the teachers or parents have awareness about it. In the case of Jaffna peninsula it is much worse that students are not given special care which affects their education and future and they are labelled as "lazy' students who don't like to study and are being punished as well. To overcome this situation and to bring a better future for the poor children who have this disability, this research is to give support as well as awareness about this disability in the Jaffna peninsula. This research is focused at the linguistic level of the disability of dyslexia, the data collected and analysed through questionnaires given to the parents and teachers who deal with children, interviews and reading activities for the children were given to identify the difficulties. This research examines the problems of learning disability in a linguistic view as the analysis mainly focuses on linguistic characteristics based on Tamil language, in which linguistic level the children are having difficulties so that it would be easy to explain to the teachers as well as parents, how they should be able to find out the problems so that it will be easy to correct the children and give repetitive exercises to drill them little by little to bring them up. This thesis will also help both parents and teachers to cope with children of learning disability. Background of the Study Linguistics is a scientific study of a language as a whole which has two aspects such as theoretical and applied. Theoretical linguistics is the branch of linguistics that is most concerned with developing models of linguistic knowledge. The fields that are generally considered the core of theoretical linguistics are syntax, phonology, morphology, and semantics. Theoretical linguistics also involves the search for an explanation of linguistic universals, that is, properties all languages have in common. Applied Linguistics is concerned with the systematic study of language structure, the acquisition of first and subsequent languages, the role of language in communication, and the status of language as the product of particular cultures and other social groups. A background in linguistics is essential for language teachers, translators, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and many other language professionals. Applied Linguistics examines the structure of language and its role in communication, explores how children acquire language, studies how the skills of second-language speakers develop, and investigates how the social or cultural environment interacts with language. Clinical Linguistics is a sub-discipline of linguistics which involves the application of linguistic theory to the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Clinical linguistics, a branch of applied linguistics, is the use of linguistics to describe, analyze, and treat language disabilities. The study of linguistic aspect of communication disorders is of relevance to a broader understanding of language and linguistic theory. Since Learning Disability (LD) is a challenge to learn a language which is a primary function of communication. Now more care and special education systems had been introduced worldwide to enhance the learning process of those who are suffering from LD.
Alfred BUREGEYA, University of Nairobi Veilon MNYORE, Vihindi Primary School This study sought to investigate whether there was correlation between reading impairment (dyslexia) and writing impairment (dysgraphia), and whether function words would pose a greater challenge than content words in both reading and writing in the English of a group of twenty-five upper-primary pupils (of the Sabatia Sub-county of Vihiga County, Kenya) who experienced serious reading and writing difficulties. It found that there was a high positive correlation between the subjects' reading and writing (r = 0.79 at p<0.01, with df =23). However, contrary to what had been hypothesized (based on the available literature on language disorders), it found that the subjects' performance on both reading and writing function words was significantly better than that on reading and writing content words (with calculated chi-square values of 45.62 for reading and of 30.46 for writing). Overall, the study's results show that when the target words were presented in a list (i.e. in isolation), there was no statistical difference in the subjects' performance on reading and that on writing, but when they were presented in sentences (i.e. in context), the subjects did significantly better on reading than on writing, both for content and function words. However, in absolute terms they did poorly on both reading and writing, well below a 50% correct-reading and correct-spelling rate.

This research sought to establish challenges faced by grade seven teachers when teaching pupils with dyslexia in the mainstream lessons in Mzilikazi District in Bulawayo Metropolitan province. The qualitative approach with a case study research design was used to enable an in-depth establishment of challenges faced by grade seven teachers when teaching pupils with dyslexia in the mainstream lessons. Convenience sampling and purposive sampling techniques were employed in the selection of a sample of 20 respondents out of a target population of 170 potential respondents. Questionnaires and interview schedules were employed for gathering data. Thematic analysis of data revealed that grade seven teachers in Mzilikazi district had minimal knowledge or understanding of dyslexia. The results also disclosed that grade seven teachers’ lack of knowledge and confidence with teaching dyslexic pupils also hindered their provision of support for dyslexic pupils. COMMUNICATION DISABILITIES AMONG PRIMARY STUDENTS: A CASE IN SOUTH EAST COAST

Communication disorder is a big challenge for school children. This study aims to identify the students with communication disabilities among primary children (Grades 3-5) at Km/Al-Mina Vidyalaya, Nintavur. Data was collected using, interviews and tests from 35 students and 3 teachers. Data were analyzed with MS Word, 2007, and MS Excel, 2007. This study was based on a mixed-method research design. A research design is considered to be the most appropriate approach for this study since it describes an existing situation. The total primary students participated in observations for communication disorders. All the children were observed using test tools. The results of the study identified that 22.5% of schoolchildren were affected by communication disorders. Among these, 27 students were affected by reading disorders, 35 students were affected by writing disabilities, 10 students were affected by speaking disorders and 8 students were affected by listening skills, and four students were affected by all these problems. Within the disorder group, 21 boys and 14 girls were identified.
