Non-participation in education, employment, and training among young people accessing youth mental health services: demographic and clinical correlates

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate participation in employment, education, or training among a national cohort of young people presenting to youth-specific mental health services across Australia, and identify the key demographic and clinical correlates of non-participation. Method: Clinician and self-reported demographic and clinical characteristics were ascertained for 57,644 young people aged 15–25 years presenting to a national youth-specific mental health service between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2015, including level of participation in education, employment, or training in four categories (not participating, not in the labour force, partial participation, and full participation). Results: The results showed that these young people are very vulnerable to non-participation in employment, education or training. Characteristics most strongly associated with non- participation were being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, male, homeless, diagnosed with a substance use disorder, or having a neurodevelopmental disorder in young adulthood. Discussion: The results extend understanding of the major risk factors associated with non-participation in employment, education, or training for help-seeking young people. Distinct patterns emerged across the three non-participation groups suggesting that support must be tailored to individual needs. Supporting those who experience mental illness to re-engage is essential to buffer against the long-term impacts. Holistic, integrated services that can incorporate mental health and vocational services are crucial for prevention, early intervention, and treatment.

Associations between Adolescent Psychosocial Factors and Disengagement from Education and Employment in Young Adulthood among Individuals with Common Mental Health Problems

Transition to adulthood can be a challenging developmental task for adolescents with common mental health problems and is linked to adverse outcomes such as 'not in education, employment or training' (NEET). This study investigated longitudinal associations between adolescent psychosocial factors (e.g., self-esteem, aspirations, bullying, physical activity) and later NEET status among individuals with common mental health problems (i.e., depression and anxiety). A secondary data analysis of the Next Steps cohort study was completed using waves 2 and 8. Psychosocial factors, mental health, and background characteristics were captured when participants were aged 15-16 years (wave 2) while still in compulsory education. The 12-item General Health Questionnaire was used to identify adolescents with common mental health problems. The study population consisted of 2224 participants (females 66.8%) of which 1473 (66.2%) were aged 15 years and 751 (33.8%) were aged 16 years in wave 2. The outcome was NEET status at ages 25-26 years (wave 8). The results showed that after adjusting for background characteristics, adolescent self-esteem, locus of control, bullying, physical activity, job aspirations, and attitudes to school predicted NEET status. Educational aspirations, substance use, and behavioural problems were not significantly associated with NEET status. These findings provide new insights into the role of adolescent psychosocial factors in the context of education and employment outcomes for youth at risk and highlight the necessity of targeted mental health support to improve life chances.

Adolescents leaving mental health or social care services: predictors of mental health and psychosocial outcomes one year later

UK service structure necessitates a transition out of youth services at a time of increased risk for the development and onset of mental disorders. Little is currently known about the mental health and psychosocial outcomes of leaving services at this time. The aim of this study was to determine predictors of mental health and social adjustment in adolescents leaving mental health or social care services. A cohort (n = 53) of 17 year olds were interviewed and assessed when preparing to leave adolescent services and again 12 months later. Their mental health and psychosocial characteristics were compared to a same-age community sample group (n = 1074). At discharge 34 (64%) met DSM IV criteria for a current psychiatric diagnosis and only 3 (6%) participants met operational criteria for successful outcomes at follow-up. Youth Mental Health Tracker: protocol to establish a longitudinal cohort and research database for young people attending Australian mental health services

IntroductionMental disorders are a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. Much of the burden of mental ill-health is mediated by early onset, comorbidities with physical health conditions and chronicity of the illnesses.
