This research article discusses the problems having flexible demand, supply and cost in range referred as interval data based transportation problems and these cannot be solved directly using available methods. The uncertainty associated with these types of problems motivates authors to tackle it by converting interval to fuzzy numbers. This confront of conversion has been achieved by proposing a dichotomic fuzzification approach followed by a unique triangular incenter ranking approach to optimize interval data based transportation problems. A comparison with existing methods is made with the help of numerical illustrations. The algorithm proposed is found prompt in terms of the number of iteration involved and problem formation. This method is practical to handle the transportation problems not having a single valued data, but data in form of a range.
A New Method to Solve Interval Transportation Problems
Pakistan Journal of Statistics and Operation Research, 2020
transportation problem (ITP) in which the cost-coefficients of the objective function, source and destination parameters are all in the form of interval. In this paper, the single objective interval transportation problem is transformed into an equivalent crisp bi-objective transportation problem where the left-limit and width of the interval are to be minimized. The solution to this bi-objective model is then obtained with the help of fuzzy programming technique. The proposed solution procedure has been demonstrated with the help of a numerical example. A comparative study has also been made between the proposed solution method and the method proposed by Das et al.(1999) .

In a recent paper, proposed a new method based on ranking function for solving fuzzy transportation problem (FTP) by assuming that the values of transportation costs are represented by generalized trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Here it is shown that once the ranking function is chosen, the FTP is converted into crisp one, which is easily solved by the standard transportation algorithms. The main contribution here is the reduction of the computational complexity of the existing method. By solving two application examples, it is shown that it is possible to find a same optimal solution without solving any FTP. Since the proposed approach is based on classical approach it is very easy to understand and to apply on real life transportation problems for the decision makers.

Due to globalization in this modern age of technology and other uncontrollable influences, transportation parameters can differ within a certain range of a given period. In this situation, a managerial position’s objective is to make appropriate decisions for the decision-makers. However, in general, the determination of an exact solution to the interval data-based transportation problem (IDTP) becomes an NP-hard problem as the number of choices within their respective ranges increases enormously when the number of suppliers and buyers increases. So, in practice, it is difficult for an exact method to find the exact solution to the IDTP in a reasonable time, specifically the large-sized problems with large interval sizes. This paper introduces solutions to the IDTP where supply, demand, and cost are all in interval numbers. One of the best interval approximations, namely the closed interval approximation of pentagonal fuzzy number, is proposed for solving the IDTP. First, in the pro...
Profit Maximization Solid Transportation Problem with Trapezoidal Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Numbers
International Journal of Applied and Computational Mathematics, 2015
This paper proposes a new concept on transportation problem in which, we maximize the profit and minimize the transportation time while transporting an amount of quantity from a source to the destination. Here, we design two transportation models, in both the models; we maximize the profit and minimize the time of transportation. Here model-I having the unit purchase cost, unit selling price, unit transportation cost and transportation time as trapezoidal interval type-2 fuzzy number, while in model-II all the parameters are trapezoidal interval type-2 fuzzy number. To reduce these model-I and model-II into crisp equivalent, we use the expected value of a trapezoidal interval type-2 fuzzy number. Then the crisp equivalent problems are solved by employing the Interactive fuzzy satisficing method and LINGO 13.0 software to get the optimal solution. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the models.
An Approach for Solving Fuzzy Transportation Problem Using Octagonal Fuzzy Numbers
In this paper, a general fuzzy transportation problem model is discussed. There are several approaches by different authors to solve such a problem viz., [1,2,3,6,7,8]. We introduce octagonal fuzzy numbers using which we develop a new model to solve the problem. By defining a ranking to the octagonal fuzzy numbers, it is possible to compare them and using this we convert the fuzzy valued transportation problem (cost, supply and demand appearing as octagonal fuzzy numbers) to a crisp valued transportation problem, which then can be solved using the MODI Method. We have proved that the optimal value for a fuzzy transportation problem, when solved using octagonal fuzzy number gives a much more optimal value than when it is solved using trapezoidal fuzzy number as done by Basirzadeh [3] which is illustrated through a numerical example.
Fuzzy Transportation Problem of Symmetric Trapezoidal with Cut and Ranking Technique
A new method is proposed for solving fuzzy transportation problem, using symmetric trapezoidal number fuzzy with cut and ranking technique by assuming that a decision maker is uncertain about the precise values of the transportation cost, availability and demand of the product. In the proposed method, transportation cost, availability and demand of the product are represented by generalized trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. To illustrate the proposed method, a numerical example is solved and the obtained results are compared with the results of existing methods. Since the proposed method is a direct extension of classical method, the proposed method is very easy to understand and to apply on real life transportation problems for the decision makers.
A New Algorithm for Solving Fuzzy Transportation Problems with TrapezoidalFuzzy Numbers
In real world problems, optimization techniques are useful for solving problems like, project schedules, assignment problems and network flow analysis. The main aspect of this paper is to find the least transportation cost of some commodities through a capacitated network when the supply and demand of nodes and the capacity and cost of edges are represented as fuzzy numbers. Here, we are proposing a new algorithm for solving fuzzy transportation problem, where fuzzy demand and supply all are in the form of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. where fuzzy demand and supply all are in the form of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. So the proposed approach is very easy to understand and to apply on real life transportation problems for the decision makers.
