Effect of Moringa oliefera leaves on blood pressure in hypertensive patients

Introduction: Moringa oleifera is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Moringa, which is the only genus in the family Moringaceae. Most nutritious part of the plant is its leaves, and is a good source of vitamin B vitamins and C. It has been reported Moringa oleifera shows antidiabetic effect. The leaf extract contains flavonoids, polyphenols, lycopene, and ß-carotene, and possessed 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities. Objective: The present study is designed to conduct effect of Moringa oleifera leaves on blood pressure among human subjects. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 males who are diagnosed with stage -1 hypertension patients with in the age group of 35-50 years were selected in the study as cases. The participants served as self-controls. Moringa oleifera leaves juices were prepared and provided to the subjects two times in a day (15 leaves extract one time) for the period of 30 days. Diamond digital sphygmomanometer is used to take the blood pressure. Results: There was a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure followed by the intervention (P<0> Conclusion: Thus the Moringa leaf can provide desired effect as a natural control measure for high blood pressure and can be regarded as an alternative medicine. In recent years, Moringa oleifera has received commercial interest for its blood pressure (BP)-lowering effect. The objectives of this study were to investigate the hypotensive, diuretic, and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activities of M. oleifera ethanolic and aqueous extracts. Spontaneously hypertensive (SH) and normotensive (NT)rats were fed the ethanolic and aqueous extracts at a dose of 1000 mg/kg each for 14 days. The rats were allocated to 12 groups of five rats each. Systolic and diastolic BP were measured, and urine was collected. All extracts, except the aqueous stem extract, significantly reduced systolic and diastolic BP in SH rats, but none of the extracts showed significant hypotensive effects on NT rats. The ethanolic leaf extract (ELE) caused significant diuresis. Moreover, most of the extracts inhibited ACE activity significantly at 40 and 80 μg/mL. THE EFFECTS OF MORINGA OLEIFERA LAM INFUSION ON BIOMEDICAL MARKERS OF HEALTH

In view of the increasing burden of NCDs globally and the complexity associated with their control and management, the potential efficacy of Moringa oleifera in lipid-lowering, blood glucose optimisation, and other metabolic markers of NCDs management, has been supported by empirical findings conducted on both animals and human subjects. The current study was conducted to assess the effect of consumption of Moringa infusion on metabolic markers directly related to the aetiology and development of non- communicable diseases in humans, focusing on its plasma lipid-lowering effect. Methodology: A randomised clinical trial design was conducted with 167 human subjects randomly divided into 2 groups. Only 125 participants completed the study (73 in the experimental group and 52 in the control group). The experimental group were given Moringa oleifera tea bags and requested to consume two tea bags twice daily (8g) while the control group consumed 200ml of warm water twice daily. The two groups were monitored for a period of 29 days. Blood samples for blood lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol), fasting blood glucose, serum uric acid, liver enzymes (Gamma Glutamyl transferase (GGT), Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT)), blood pressure, anthropometric measurements (weight, height, waist circumference) were taken at baseline and then on day 15 and day 29. Socio-demographic details, medical history, food frequency questionnaire, and physical activity questionnaire were also recorded. Results: No statistically significant effect of Moringa oleifera on lipid profile (LDLcholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides), serum uric acid and liver enzymes and anthropometric measurements was recorded in this study (p>0.05) at 95% confidence interval. . However, a decrease of 0.12mmol/l in triglyceride, 0.03mmol/l in LDL-cholesterol and an increase of 0.06 mmol/l in HDL were observed among female participants who were taking Moringa. A decreasing trend in BP (mean of 2.15mmHg in systolic blood pressure and 1.43mmHg in diastolic blood pressure) was noted in the experimental group and a higher decrease in diastolic blood pressure as compared to systolic blood pressure was noted among hypertensive participants of the experimental group. A mean decrease of 1.03cm in the waist circumference was noted in case group, with a 1% decrease observed among participants with large waist circumference at baseline. Original Research Article Background and Aim: Hyperlipidemia is implicated in metabolic diseases like Diabetes mellitus, arteriosclerosis, Hypertension, Obesity, Stroke, Cancer etc. In recent past Methanolic Extract of Moringa oleifera leaves (MEMOL) has gained enormous attention owing to its ameliorative effect in various metabolic diseases. MEMOL has profound hypolipidemic activity due to the presence of Chlorogenic acids (CGA) that causes elimination of lipids [1]. Effect of Moringa Oleifera on Lipid Profile in Rats
Background: Coronary heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia are primary causes of death worldwide. Moringa Oleifera tree was used as a health supplement introduced to Africa from India. Its leaves have various biological activities, including hypolipidemic effect. Objective(s): The aim of present study was to assess the effect of Moringa Oleifera consumption on lipid profile and histopathology of the liver in hyperlipidemic rats. Methods: A total of 50 male albino rats were divided into five equal groups. Group I was left as control and fed on standard diet only. Group II was fed on standard diet and orally injected with 400 mg/kg of rat body weight extract of Moringa Oleifera. Hyperlipidemia was induced in the remaining 30 rats by feeding an atherogenic diet for four weeks. Group III was fed on atherogenic diet only. Group IV was fed on atherogenic diet and orally injected with 400 mg/kg of rat body weight extract of Moringa Oleifera. Group V was fed on atherogenic diet with 2mg/kg of rat body weight Atorvastatin drug. Lipid profile of rat blood was measured including total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). Liver tissue was evaluated by carrying out histopathological examination. Results: The rats fed on Moringa Oleifera showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL by 26.8% and 40.6% respectively compared to baseline values after 4 weeks. Although VLDL and TG showed slight increase by 5.6% and 5.1% respectively, they were still within the normal range. Otherwise, there was a significant increase in LDL, VLDL, TC, and total TG levels in rats fed on atherogenic diet only by 17.13%, 195.4%, 29.2%, and 193% respectively compared to baseline values after 4 weeks. Atorvastatin drug affected the HDL level, as it increased by 16.4% % 28% from baseline after two and four weeks respectively. Atorvastatin and Moringa Oleifera decreased VLDL level by 53.9% & 36.5% respectively when compared to rats fed on atherogenic diet. Conclusion: Moringa Oleifera was comparable to hypolipidemic medication (Atorvastatin) in improving the lipid profile of rats fed on atherogenic diet. Moringa Oleifera intake is more effective in prevention than in treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Background/Aim: Moringa oleifera is one of the many plants that are being used today in treating various pathological conditions. The current study investigates the effects Moringa oleifera leaf powder has on the levels of serum Sodium, Chloride and Potassium ions in the bodies of healthy human subjects. Method: Thirty (30) participants took part in the oral administration of 5.0g of Moringa oleifera for duration of 7 days. Readings for the serum electrolytes were taken before onset and after the 7 days administration of the Moringa oleifera extract, with the previous readings serving as a control. Results: There was a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in Sodium and Chloride ions, and a non-significant decrease in potassium ions. Conclusion: The decrease in electrolytes levels has been associated with the active phytochemical constituents present in the M. oleifera leaves.
