De Bayle à Hume. Tolérance, hypothèses, systèmes (Honoré Champion, Paris, 2023), p. 670 (original) (raw)
2023, Honoré Champion (Paris)
It is impossible to grasp the meaning of Pierre Bayle's philosophy without putting it into context in the great debates of the century. This is why a great deal of attention is devoted to the relationships with Descartes’, Malebranche’, Spinoza’ (including the TTP), Locke’, and Leibniz’ (with extensions until Rawls) about the metaphysical, epistemological, and theologico-political issues. The entire third part of the book is dedicated to the relationship between Hume's Dialogues and Bayle’s thought, with new discoveries in comparison to the classic studies of K. Smith. Also, the discussion on qualia in both thinkers (via Locke) is re-examined and enriched shedding light on another contribution of Baylean text on Hume, “Of The Immateriality of the soul”. Gianni Paganini, professor emeritus at the University of Piedmont (Vercelli) is the author of Analisi della fede e critica della ragione nella filosofia di Pierre Bayle (Florence 1980), Skepsis. The debate of the moderns on skepticism (Paris, Vrin, 2008, crowned by the French Academy), Clandestine philosophies in the classical age (Paris, PUF, 2005) and many other studies on the philosophy and sciences of the 17th and eighteenth centuries. He received the Prize for Philosophy from the Accademia dei Lincei (2011), of which he is now a member.
