Analysis on Students' Late-Coming Factors in Selected Secondary Schools in Zaria: Implications for Educational Managers

This study attempted to answer the following research questions among others: Has gender any relation with students' late-coming to school? Has age any relation with students' late-coming to school? Do senior students come to school late than junior? Four secondary schools were selected for the study. Sample of sixty students late comers were administered with the questionnaire within a period of two weeks. The instrument was partly adopted, while the other part was self constructed. The instrument was validated by expert in educational administration and language. Data collected was analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies for easy interpretation and understanding. The results indicate that late coming to school is higher among female students, those within the ages of 16-20 are frequent late comers and senior among others. It was recommended that parents (especially mothers) should reduce engaging female students with home activities especially in the morning; school administrators and teachers should increase effort on counseling strategies to adolescent students due to their change in perception and school rules.

Lateness: A major problem confronting school administrators in Delta State, Nigeria

This paper is a review on lateness in public schools, which has posed a major problem to school administrators in Delta State, Nigeria, especially at the primary and secondary school levels. The author delimited his focus on students, staff and supporting staff in the school system. The salient point is that lateness to schools plagues school administrators, bringing about inefficiencies at work by way of administration. Therefore, this paper highlights the meaning, causes and effects of lateness to schools as related to the school administrator in Delta State, Nigeria. The study also highlighted various remedies to the sordid situation. This review will therefore help school administrators alleviate lateness, a hydra-headed monster plaguing schools in Delta State, Nigeria, and as such bring about easy administration of schools in the region.

Factors Influencing Primary School Non-attendance among Children in North West Nigeria

This paper presents a study that investigate the effects of children, household and state factors on primary school non-attendance among children in North West Nigeria. The study uses a nationally representative dataset, the Nigerian Education Data Survey (NEDS 2010) to investigate how children, household and state factors affect primary school non-attendance among children. The data pertaining to the area under study was extracted from the NEDS 2010 dataset and prepared for analysis. The study then uses multilevel analysis to hierarchically examine the effects of children, household and state factors on primary school non-attendance in North West Nigeria. The results of the multilevel analysis showed that most of the strong determinants of primary school non-attendance was due to household factors, with parental education and wealth being the most important. The results further showed that parental education and wealth also influences other factors across children, household and state levels. The results also showed that distance to school has more influence on primary school non-attendance among state factors.

Causes and Levels of Truancy Among Secondary School Students: A Case Study of Rivers State, Nigeria

The study was a case study design aimed at determining the causes and levels of truancy among secondary school students, using Rivers State, Nigeria. The research sample consisted of 105 teachers and was purposefully sampled. Four research questions and one hypothesis were posed, formulated and tested respectively. A structured questionnaire was developed, validated and administered to the respondents selected for the study. T-test, standard deviation and mean were used to analyze the data collected. The results indicated that there is a significant difference between family background and student factor. The implication of this is that the student’s family background contributes greatly to the student’s level of truancy. Hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made towards the reducing the level of truancy among secondary school students. 'The Causes of Late Coming among High School Students in Soshanguve, Pretoria, South Africa' in Pedagogical Research Vol 2. Issue 2

Late coming to school has become a major problem in many schools, particularly township schools with serious consequences. Current research has demonstrated that many schools in South Africa are performing badly due to inefficient use of the teaching and learning time. In this article, we argue that while major administrative interventions are undertaken to improve the quality of learning and teaching, it seems that very little attention is paid to late-coming. Late-coming has become a cancer that saps away big interventions and strays the performance of selected township schools in a different direction. The purpose of this research is to investigate the causes of late-coming among high school students in selected secondary schools of Shoshanguve. A qualitative approach was used to draw data from high school students in selected secondary schools of Shoshanguve. The findings reveal that late-coming is common among learners in selected secondary schools of Shoshanguve. It happens every day for varying reasons. We recommended practical solutions ranging from administrative improvement to learner behavioural change.

A review of Factors Associated with Student's Lateness Bahavior and Dealing Strategies

This study aimed to systematically review studies that investigate factors associated with students lateness behavior and dealing strategies. There were at least 24 papers and reports reviewed regarding lateness behavior. The related journal papers and reports on factor associated with students lateness behavior and dealing strategies were downloaded with cut off limit from 1991 to 2013. The papers and reports were then analyzed and organized according to the definitions of lateness and various factors associated with students lateness behavior and dealing strategies. However, the finding of this study indicate that there were conclusive evidence from the reviewed literature regarding students lateness behavior, yet the number of articles supporting it was small. Finally, conclusion of the study indicate tha dealing with disruptive behavior in the classroom is one of the most challenging aspects of being a professor and the study recommended further investigations and analysis could be beneficial to obtain a complete vision of patterns of lateness behavior and coping strategies for the student.

STUDENTS' NON-SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN IBADAN: IMPLICATION FOR COUNSELLING

School attendance is of necessity and very important for academic success and moral development of learners. There is no doubt that issue of school attendance in Nigeria among secondary school students has contributed largely to the poor performance of students in examination conducted internally and externally, hence the need for this study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design using ex-post facto type. Purposive sampling technique was used to select two hundred (200) participants for the study. Three hypotheses were generated and tested for the study at 0.05 alpha levels. The main instrument for the study was Student Attendance Behaviour Scale (SABS; r = 0.83) was used to generate data for the study. Data were analyzed using Student t test statistic. There were significant differences in the level of truancy behaviour between: male and female participants (tobs = 11.08; df = 198; p > 0.05); participants from monogamous and polygamous families (tobs = 274.15; df = 198; p> 0.05). The result also indicated that there was a significant difference in the truancy behaviour between participants from literate and non-literate homes (t = 24.25; df = 198; p < 0.05). The study concluded that truancy is a bad habit. It was therefore recommended that school administrators, counselors, teachers and parents should endeavour to identify factors leading to truancy among learners with a view to develop appropriate intervention.

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AS CORRELATE OF STUDENTS TRUANCY IN OKPE LOCAL GOVERNMENT, AREA OF DELTA STATE NIGERIA

The study examined the psychological and environment factors as correlate of students' truancy in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State Nigeria. Five research questions and five hypotheses guided the study. Correlational research design was utilized. A sample of 450 students was drawn via proportional stratified sampling procedure and 5 Schools were drawn using simple random. Psychological factor scale (PFS), environmental factor scale (EFS) and truancy scale (TS) were utilized for collection of data. The reliability were established using cronbach alpha method of internal consistency which were obtained as motivation 0.768, self concept 0.808 peer-group 0.668, electronic media 0.821 truancy scale had 0.878 linear, multiple and ANOVA coupled with regression were utilized to answer research questions and test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that motivation, self concept, peer-group and electronic media jointly relate significantly to students' truancy in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. In the light of the discoveries, recommendations were made including that guardians and educators ought to manage their kids/students in their selection of companions.

Investigation into the Causes of Truancy among Public Senior Secondary School Students in Azare Metropolis of Bauchi State, Nigeria

Abstract: Truancy is one of the problems affecting teaching and learning in our secondary schools these days. This study investigated the causes of truancy among public senior secondary school students in Azare metropolis of Bauchi state, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was used and the sampled was 357 which were selected from the population of 5,219 by using disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. A questionnaire was used in the collection of data for this study and simple percentage and frequency were used in the analysis. The study found out that the causes of truancy emanating from the home of the students include helping parents in the household work, looking after young children in the house, lack of recognition by the parents etc. The study also found out that some causes of truancy which emanate from the children include low intelligence, weak physical health, social and emotional, maladjustment etc. It was also found out that some causes of truancy emanating from the school include fear of teachers, fear of school activities, difficulties of school subjects etc. Finally, the study recommended that well trained teachers are to be employed, guidance and counseling offices and counselors are to be available in schools, conducive atmosphere in schools should be provided, clubs and societies should be reactivated, sport and recreational activities should be provided and maintained by the schools.
