Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder and has become a great health problem particularly among the elderly people, generally occurs after the age of 55 years and increase in incidence with advancing age, affecting nearly 25 million people worldwide. Alzheimer's disease (AD) was first identified by the German psychiatrist, Alois Alzheimer, in 1907. People with this disease may exhibit symptoms of short-term memory loss, diminished motor skills, inefficient coordination and impaired intellectual capabilities. The cause of AD is not exactly known, but is thought to include both genetic and environmental factors (multifactorial). There is no known cure for Alzheimer's disease, since it is not possible to reverse the death of brain cells but the symptoms can be managed by some pharmacological agents and herbal remedies. The herbal remedies are becoming more popular in the recent years and providing very promising benefits to the patients suffering from AD. Several clinical trials using herbal mixtures are also going on and will hopefully show positive results for treating AD in the future. This paper reviews the Pathophysiology of AD along with the synthetic drugs and herbal medicines which are used for the Management of AD.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common type of dementia, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease severely affecting memory and cognitive function. It causes linguistic and visuo-spatial deficiencies, and behavioral problems like indifference, aggressiveness and depression as disease progresses advanced stages. No cure is available for Alzheimer's, though symptomatic treatment improves memory and other symptoms. Natural products ease the symptoms of many kinds of diseases and offer a treatment option for many diseases at least successfully slowing the progress. Medicinal plants and plant products have been historically employed to improve brain function and treat memory disorders like amnesia, dementia. Though, various studies have described the utility of plants for treatment of Alzheimer's, but with limited scientific evidence. Though, it has been reported that early start of utilization memory enhancing agents and brain tonics can be beneficial in AD. The present review is to summaries the herbal medicines which have reported to have some kind of CNS activity and may be utilized for slowing progression, symptomatic treatment and research in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its related symptoms.

"Plague of the Twenty-First Century," or "Alzheimer disease" is anneuro-degenerative disease that influenced the world's elderly population. The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is expected to increase to one hundred thirty-five million by 2050, with no treatment(s) currently available to cure or monitor the disease's progression. The current treatment(s) have lesscapability to manage symptoms or delay disease development, and they can cause serious side effects. The cost of overall treatment is high for both the patients and their caregivers or family members. As an example, there is an serious requirement to find safer alternative treatments for better management of Alzheimer's disease. The various Indian herbal medicines such as Centella asiatica,Celastruspaniculatus Curcuma longa, Clitoriaternatea,Bacopa monnieri, Withania somnifera, has been reviewed in this article. Eclipta alba, Desmodiumgangeticum, Evolvulusalsinoides, Moringa oleifera, and Convolvulus pluricaulis are among the plants that have shown promising effect in the treatment related to cognitive disability.

This review paper highlights the use of medicinal plants in the management of Alzheimer's disease and memory deficit. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, a serious brain disorder that impacts daily living through memory loss and cognitive changes. Alzheimer's disease is also agerelated neurodegenerative disorders caused by progressive loss of structure or function of neurons, resulting in neuronal cell death. Alzheimer's patients have an acetylcholine deficiency. Stressful conditions, free radicle scavanging and oxidation are often associated with loss of memory and cognitive functions, which may lead to threats of schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. However, the use of allopathic drugs has resulted in the adverse side effects on the human body and thus limits the use of such drugs. Herbal cognitive enhancer drugs have shown their potent effect in Alzheimer's disease due to their antioxidant and neuropharmacological actions. The use of natural cognitive enhancers evidenced to improve mental functions such as cognition, memory, intelligence, motivation, attention and concentration. Traditional Ayurvedic herbal system of medicine is fundamentally preventive, protective, nutritive, curative and less expensive. Therefore, the use of herbal medicine for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease is a novel approach without any side effects.

Alzheimer's disease: Molecular aspects and treatment opportunities using herbal drugs

Alzheimer's disease (AD), also called senile dementia, is the most common neurological disorder. Around 50 million people, mostly of advanced age, are suffering from dementia worldwide and this is expected to reach 100-130 million between 2040 and 2050. AD is characterized by impaired glutamatergic and cholinergic neurotransmission, which is associated with clinical and pathological symptoms. AD is characterized clinically by loss of cognition and memory impairment and pathologically by senile plaques formed by Amyloid β deposits or neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) consisting of aggregated tau proteins. Amyloid β deposits are responsible for glutamatergic dysfunction that develops NMDA dependent Ca2+ influx into postsynaptic neurons generating slow excitotoxicity process leading to oxidative stress and finally impaired cognition and neuronal loss. Amyloid decreases acetylcholine release, synthesis and neuronal transport. The decreased levels of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, neuronal loss, tau aggregation, amyloid β plaques, increased oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, bio-metal dyshomeostasis, autophagy, cell cycle dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and endoplasmic reticulum dysfunction are the factors responsible for the pathogenesis of AD. Acetylcholinesterase, NMDA, Glutamate, BACE1, 5HT6, and RAGE (Receptors for Advanced Glycation End products) are receptors targeted in treatment of AD. The FDA approved acetylcholinesterase inhibitors Donepezil, Galantamine and Rivastigmine and N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist Memantine provide symptomatic relief. Different therapies such as amyloid β therapies, tau-based therapies, neurotransmitter-based therapies, autophagy-based therapies, multi-target therapeutic strategies, and gene therapy modify the natural course of the disease. Herbal and food intake is also important as preventive strategy and recently focus has also been placed on herbal drugs for treatment. This review focuses on the molecular aspects, pathogenesis and recent studies that signifies the potential of medicinal plants and their extracts or chemical constituents for the treatment of degenerative symptoms related to AD.

Alzheimer s disease (AD) is characterized by profound memory loss sufficient to interfere with social and occupationalfunctioning. It is the most common form of dementia, affecting more than 20 million people worldwide. AD is characterized by an insidious loss ofmemory, associated functional decline, and behavioral disturbances. Patients may livefor more than a decade after they are diagnosed with AD, making it the leading cause ofdisability in the elderly. The incidence ofAD rangesfrom I to 4 percent ofthepopulation per year, risingfrom its lowest level at ages 65 to 70 years to rates that may approach 6 percent for those over the age of85 years. The first neurotransmitter defect discovered in AD involved acetylcholine (A Ch). As cholinergicfunction is requiredfor short-term memory, the cholinergic deficit in AD was also believed to be responsiblefor much ofthe short-term memory deficit.
