A review of BIM (Building Information Modeling) implementation in Indonesia construction industry

Construction projects in Indonesia have been growing rapidly in the last three years. Therefore, construction management is very important to ensure completion of construction projects are within schedule and budget. Utilization of building information modeling (BIM) can increase the efficiency of a construction project. However, the implementation of BIM in Indonesia is still not known. This paper is intended to review the implementation of BIM in Indonesia through literature analysis. To find BIM articles in Indonesia, Firstly, searching was limited to English articles published in reputed journals or conferences. However the results were limited, then the search was expanded to the article using Indonesian languages that published in journal and conference. Based on the number of articles, the results showed that BIM research in Indonesia is still in a dearth. Furthermore, BIM study cases were conducted in a limited location and within a small population. Nevertheless, the literature shared the conclusion that BIM can increase project efficiency, but the implementation was hindered by high initial investment cost, inadequate human resources, small demand, and technology resistant. The research contributes to providing a current reported level of BIM implementation in Indonesia. In the future research to study of BIM implementation comprehensively in Indonesia is eminent.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a new approach of construction design. It does not only facilitate the digital representation for designs but also provides all the necessary information for any project before it is constructed. Despite this advantage, the adoption of BIM in Malaysian construction is very low. Motivated by this, current study has focused on assessing current status of BIM implementation in Malaysian construction industry. It has also investigated advantages and disadvantages together with barriers to implementations of BIM and proposing effective strategies for enhancing the BIM implementation in construction industry. Investigation was done through survey where 150 questionnaire forms were distributed and 95 completed forms received back were analyzed with Average Index (AI) and Relative Importance Index (RII) method. Findings of the study revealed that the rate of BIM implementation in construction industry is very low. Major advantages of BIM are improved scheduling, improved drawing coordinated, controlling time and cost and singe detailed model. Enhanced collaboration, requires coordinated drawing, interoperability are the major disadvantages and limitations of BIM. Major barriers to low level of BIM implementation are lack of competent staff to operate the software, unawareness of the technology and non availability of parametric library. Provision of trial software, training of construction staff and introducing of BIM in university curriculum are very effective strategies in enhancing the implementation of BIM.
Investigating Building Information Modelling (BIM) Adoption in Indonesia Construction Industry

The development of information technology continues to evolve to respond the increasing demand and challenges in the construction industry. Building Information Modelling (BIM) emerges in recent years as the fresh solution to make the project lifecycle more efficient by encouraging collaborative working of all stakeholders involved in the construction project, i.e. owners, consultants, and contractors. This study aims to investigate BIM adoption and implementation in Indonesia construction industry and explore challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of BIM. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research method has been adopted for this exploratory research. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a paradigm shift that has many benefits, not only for those engaged in building construction but also for the wider community. The benefits of BIM include a more integrated design and construction process, resulting in better quality buildings, lower costs and lower duration. However, to master BIM in Indonesia, many factors have not been achieved. This study uses the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to get the constraint factors for the readiness of using BIM in Indonesia which consists of 3 criteria in which there are 19 sub-criteria. There are 5 (five) experts who have competence in the field of building Information Modeling with at least 10 years of experience carrying out the assessment. The results of expert research show that the most dominant factors on the readiness of using BIM are Maturity in Understanding BIM.

In Malaysia, Building Information Modelling (BIM) has recently gained attraction from construction players and some of them have applied it to several projects. By utilising the BIM process, the construction players have the opportunity to plan, coordinate and design in an integrated approach. This is one of the many benefits that they could gain and resulting in increased productivity. Despite these benefits, the implementation of BIM in the Malaysian construction industry is still lagging behind Singapore, for instance. Thus, it warrants a study such as the present to determine what are the actual barriers that hamper its implementation and what are the driving factors that could enhance its pace of implementation in the Malaysian construction industry. In this study, a questionnaire survey based on Convenience Sampling Method was carried out to gather the possible barriers and driving factors for BIM implementation among the Malaysian construction players. Additionally, Relative Importance Indices (RII) were used to analyse the data obtained and to identify those barriers and driving factors for the implementation of BIM in this country. Consequently, results of this study revealed that the main barriers for implementing the BIM are: 1) Lack of knowledge about BIM, 2) Reluctance and/or no insistence shown by the Malaysian construction industry players (Clients, Contractors and Consultants alike) on the use or implementation of BIM. The driving factors, on the other hand, that could lead to the speeding up of the implementation of BIM are: 1) Support and enforcing the implementation of BIM by the Government, 2) promote BIM training program and 3) Initiatives of senior management of the related industry players. In conclusion, for successful wide spread application of BIM in Malaysia, a good push from the government alone is far from enough. All other construction industry players mentioned must assume their roles well in promoting the use of BIM in their construction projects.
A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM) IMPLEMENTATION IN MALAYSIA
Malaysian construction industry has seen a tremendious growth since the increase in information technology investment toward knowledge economy. The Tenth Malaysian Econimic plan towards vision 2020 has given a further boost to the construction industry under the construction industry master plan (CIMP) 2006-2015. Part of the strategic thrust was leverage on information and communication technology in the construction industry. Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementation policies are in the formulation stages. Although efforts are geared towards sensitising the industry stakeholders about the intricasies of BIM, A research into ways of effective implementation guidelines has not been fully explored. This paper presents findings from a preliminary study done to evaluate the state of present BIM policies, technological know-how, level of usage, barriers and suggestions on the state-of-the-art of BIM in Malaysian contruction industry. A literature review of current trends in BIM was analysed and cross-match with the result from an open structured interview with contsruction industry stakeholders. The finding shows an increased awareness level of BIM, and favourable implementation policies, however, a low level of awareness exist in areas of interoperatability issues, effects on standard forms of contract, BIM education in tetiary institutions of learning including general complaints of the cost of training and purchase of software lincense. This paper is part of an ongoing research into formulating an implementation guideline for Malaysian constrcution industry, with the view that such guidleines will buttress the industries drive to attaining a BIM maturity level similar to those existent in devloped countries.

The Indonesian government through the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Regulation number 22/2018 has required the use of BIM in the construction of state buildings with criteria above 2000 square meters and over two floors. These regulations are binding on stakeholders such as owners, consultants, and contractors. This study aims to analyze how the influence of the application of Digital Building Information Modeling technology on the implementation of construction projects, which consists of the advantages of BIM adoption variables, factors related to BIM adoption, challenges, and obstacles, on the success factors of BIM-based projects. The research was conducted using quantitative methods, using data from questionnaires of 40 respondents from 14 construction companies in Indonesia. The data of the dependent variable and the independent variable were analyzed using multiple regression using statistical analysis SPSS 25.0 software. The conclusion from the results of data analysis, states that there are significant effects between the variables of the application of digital technology BIM (X) in the construction service industry on the critical success factors for BIM-based projects (Y) together. Partially, the variable excess of BIM adoption (X1) and the variables related to the adoption of BIM (X2) has positive and significant effects on the determinants of the success of BIM-based projects.
