Azimuthal seismic responses from shale formation based on anisotropic rock physics and reflectivity method: a case study from south-west China

Exploration Geophysics, 2017

Due to intrinsic anisotropy related to preferred alignment of clay particles and the existence of vertical or high angle fractures, shales usually present orthorhombic anisotropy. The objective of this study was to build anisotropic rock physics models for shales at the seismic scale. Based on the well-log and Formation Micro Imager (FMI) log data from a shale formation in the Sichuan Basin in south-west China, we derive an orthorhombic model at the seismic scale by using Schoenberg and Helbig’s method and generalised Backus averaging method in the rock physics workflow. In order to understand the relationship between physical properties of the rock physics model and seismic wave propagation, we apply the simplified reflectivity method to calculate seismic responses for amplitude variation with azimuth (AVAz) analysis. The method is based on the scheme of anisotropic reflectivity method which is commonly used to simulate the full-wave field in stratified anisotropic media, in analog...

Seismic wave effects on the dynamic response of bridge foundations

2016

The dynamic response of structures to earthquake loading depends mainly on: the characteristics of the incident seismic waves; local site conditions, such as topographic irregularities and heterogeneity of the soils; the presence of stiff and heavy embedded foundations; the deformability of the soil supporting the structures. These phenomena can be relevant for bridges that usually have deep foundations and extent over considerable distances. In this paper the dynamic response of a bridge pier subjected to polarized shear waves is investigated. Different wave patterns are considered and the corresponding free-field ground motion is calculated with reference to a linear elastic halfspace. The pier is founded on a rigid caisson and soil-structure interaction is solved using the Winkler type model developed by Gerolymos and Gazetas.

PhD Thesis: Hybrid Method for Estimation of Seismic Parameters for the Purposes of Seismic Engineering,

2012

Seismic microzonation is zonation in seismic regions according to geological and geophysical characteristics, with purpose for adequate defying of the seismic hazard. For the purposes of seismic microzonation and seismic engineering in the dissertation are generated synthetic accelerograms according to hybrid method. Hybrid method in this case is combination of the benefits of the methods – modal summation and finite difference method. With the help of modal summation, synthetic signals are generated in the bedrock model (1D). The obtained signals from 1D modeling are input data for the modeling in the local models (2D). Validation of the generated signal according to real record is done. Practical application of the synthesized data for the purposes of seismic microzonation and seismic engineering is done. The probability distribution of the duration of destructive phase of the synthesize signal for the example of Sofia urban area, is researched. An approach for validation of synth...

Seismic Anisotropy Parameters of Transverse Waves by Gajigabul Earthquake Which Occurred 10 February 2014 ML = 5,8

In the article presents an analysis of the parameters of split shear waves from deep (h = 56 km) the earthquake occurred within the Lower Ku...
