A Review of Expert Systems in Agriculture
Role of expert systems in agriculture and its applications in efficient crop production and protection technologies has been reviewed and discussed in this paper. Different domains of agriculture are highlighted where expert systems can play an important role for an expert in transferring expert-driven knowledge instantly at the level of farmer's field. This paper explores structure of an expert system, role of expert system in agriculture along with details of expert system developed in the different field of agriculture and also possibilities of designing, developing and implementation of an expert system for agriculture would motivate scientists and extension workers to investigate possible applications for the benefit of entire agricultural community. INTRODUCTION This paper explores the possibilities of designing, developing and implementation of an Expert System for different activities of agriculture in integrated approach. The overall crop production management problems involve, among many others, management of diseases and insect-pests, integrated water and fertilizer managements, crop economics etc. The management problems also include the lack of enough experts and availability of experts at the farmer's field to support the crop growers. Each crop requires entirely different management practices and cropping pattern. Farmers may not know about all the information on production technology, so they need rapid access to all the possible information and need to take fast decisions to manage their crops efficiently and effectively. In order to raise a successful pulse crop and remain competitive, the modern farmers often rely on crop production specialists to assist them in arriving at the timely decision. Unfortunately, crop specialists are not always available for consultation at the nick of the time. To solve this problem, an Expert System (ES) may become a powerful tool which is a dire need of the day for
Expert Systems for Decision Making in Agriculture Sector
2005
Knowledge based expert systems have been using in different fields of life like medicine, process controlling etc. Similarly, these systems are also being used in agriculture field in which different tasks from irrigation to harvesting are included. Expert system assists people in the making of environmentally sound and economically viable farm management decisions. Expert system can also be used as a training tool in agriculture sector because of its structured way of deriving knowledge and its explanation facility. There are some core areas of agriculture for which such type of systems have been developed and these areas include Pest management, Weed controlling, Fertilization, Farm planning, Agricultural engineering, Crop production, Natural resources conservation, Disorder management, Site evaluation, Variety selection, Marketing and finance management.

Applications of Expert System in Agro-Informatics
This paper emphasizes the applications of the Expert System in Agro-informatics and reveals their importance as one of the very useful tools for the transfer of domain specific knowledge to the end users. Agroinformatics is the interdisciplinary branch of study which deals with the application and development of electronics, computer and ICT based tools for agricultural applications. The profession of agriculture aided by the various ICT based tools opens new avenue for applied research. Expert system (ES) is one of the advanced developments in software technology and can play key role in the agro-informatics. An Expert System is a program that employs expert knowledge coded in a AI language in a computer to solve problems that require human expertise. It came as the first commercial product of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the software market place and proved it efficacy by solving many problems at par with the human expert. The Expert System in agriculture is based on agriculture related problem solving models; including Diagnostics model, Hypothesis proving model, Prediction model and Farm Management model. It uses the domain specific knowledge of the experts in different representational forms such as production rules, list, frames etc. An integrated approach of Expert System with other ICT tools and electronics systems has tremendous potential to supports many problem solving activities i.e. decision making, forecasting, regulating, controlling, monitoring, prescribing, interpreting, knowledge sharing and reuse, intelligent retrieval of agricultural data. The aim of the paper is to produce detail account of applications of expert system in agriculture in Indian perspective. I.

Agricultural applications of expert systems concepts
Agricultural Systems, 1989
In the last four years there has been considerable interest among agriculture researchers in the concept of expert systems. Although initial enthusiasm was high and many projects were initiated the number of fielded agricultural expert systems remains low. This paper reviews some of the systems that have demonstrated their viability and considers their shared characteristics. The pattern among these viable expert systems involves careful attention to well defined objectives, especially in regard to each project's requirement for knowledge acquisition. The primarily heuristic expert systems focus on very narrow domains, as do the real-time expert controls projects. Other systems leverage the value of their heuristic knowledge by providing increased access to existing models and/or databases. In general the projects reviewed leave little doubt that expert systems concepts can be successfully used to expand the capabilities of specific agricultural software applications.
Egyptian research program for developing expert system in agriculture
This paper presents briefly the achievements and results of the five years research program (92 to 97) on expert systems in agriculture in Egypt as expert system technology was identified as a useful tool for technology transfer in the extension services. The research program has three objectives: developing tools and methodologies to facilitate building expert systems for different Crops, building expert systems for production management of five crops, and studying the effect of expert systems usage on social and economic aspects. A complete methodology that covers knowledge engineering and software engineering has been developed. A tool based on logic programming and object oriented programming paradigms (KROL) was built. Five expert systems for cucumber, tomato, orange, lime, and wheat were developed. The evaluation of the five expert systems showed their performances are comparable to human experts. The economic, environment and human resources impacts of using expert systems were studied. The economic impact was estimated to be 23% and 26% approximately for production of cucumber and wheat respectively. The conservation of environment was also observed when the recommended amounts of chemicals are compared with the traditional practices. The positive impact on enhancing the performance of extension workers was noticed in their decision-making capabilities.

Effectiveness index of expert system applications in agriculture
New Delhi Publishers, 2016
This research paper focuses on the assessment of the effectiveness index of expert system applications in agriculture with special reference to 'KAU-Fertulator ' and 'e-Crop doctor ', developed by Kerala Agricultural University. A survey was conducted among three targeted segments of Kerala extension professionals with a total of 100 respondents who were actively involved in the field of agriculture. Based on the relevant review of literature and discussion with experts effectiveness index of agri-expert system was developed and standardized using the applications such as quick availability and opportunity of the expert system to programme itself, expert systems ability to exploit a considerable amount of knowledge, reliability, scalability, pedagogy, expert systems ability on preservation and improvement of knowledge and expert systems ability to address the new areas neglected by conventional computing. These applications were ranked based on their mean scores in decreasing order of importance and effectiveness index was calculated to distribute the respondents in different categories. Results showed that the effectiveness index of expert system application in agriculture was generally medium. In order to improve the effectiveness index of agri-expert system applications in agriculture, it is necessary to augment the attributes of expert systems such as accuracy, timeliness, format clarity and relevancy of the information from agri-expert systems. Highlights • Effectiveness index of expert system applications in agriculture is the pioneer study which revealed that effectiveness index of expert system application in agriculture was generally medium.
