Reinterpreting Nietzsche: An Introduction to the Textualists' Approach (original) (raw)
The core of Nietzsche's philosophy is typically articulated comprehensively by contentists through key concepts such as the will to power, the eternal return, and the overman. Unfortunately, such goals are frequently arbitrary and lack rigorous textual support. Textists, on the other hand, tend to prioritize a historical-contextual approach in interpreting Nietzsche's texts in order to overcome this weakness. The textists' approach is distinguished by the genetic and literary analysis of the critical editions of Nietzsche's texts compiled by Colli/Montinari. As a result, this article begins with a brief topography of the critical editions, focusing on the role of KGW IX in genetic analysis. Furthermore, the style of genetic and literary analysis applied to aphorism 36 of BGE becomes a case study to demonstrate how the interpretation differs from that of the contentists. Textists show Nietzsche's creativity as the author of the aphorism that makes parody, irony, and satire of will-causality and moral demands in scientific explanations, whereas contentists interpret the will to power hypothesis as the essence of reality. For textists, the principle of the will to power in BGE 36 is framed in suppositional language, implying that the proposition of the will to power is also unreal.

Nietzsche, Rhetoric, Philology (final)
This essay seeks to show how a psychological interpretation of the 'will to power' would have been implausible if not impossible for Nietzsche given his other philosophical commitments and aims. These aims include 'tracing man back into nature' and revaluing values. The philosophical commitments include his Heraclichean metaphysics of fatalism, 'becoming' and a necessary 'flow' in nature and his dismissal of freewill. This study shows how these themes are ever-present in his middle to late periods and thus constrain the will to power to its broadest interpretation, that being an ontological principle in nature. This I regard as a far more charitable and compatible reading with his dismissal of 'freewill', 'causation' and 'atomism', a reading that also concurs with aspects of the science and philosophy of his day, as well as more recent findings from the sciences, than does a psychological or biological interpretation.
Nietzsche and the Universality of the Will to Power

Nietzsche, Philology, and Genealogy
The aim of this essay is to reintroduce the readers of the Journal of the Georgia Philological Association to Friedrich Nietzsche the philologist and, more substantively, to explain the nature of Nietzsche’s philologically-inspired analytic. To that end, I sketch several overlapping lines of influence on Nietzsche’s thinking. These influences include French aristocratic genealogists, the Scholastic academic tradition, Hegelian historicism, British progressive moral historians, and finally, Darwin. The discussion begins by examining the French genealogists who sought, amidst the groans of a social and intellectual transition from the feudal to the Enlightenment, to justify and protect their existing privilege by reclaiming the established tradition of drawing lines of descent. The story picks up a century and a half or so later, when genealogy was used once again: this time by progressive, utilitarian moral historians. What is especially noteworthy of these thinkers is that they although endeavored to put genealogy to a rather different use, they retained both the narrative structure and many of the metaphysical presuppositions of the old system, including universal forms and the existence of a predetermined moral order. It is explained that these thinkers were influenced by Hegel’s (1802) pre-Darwin speculation regarding historical evolution and that his ideas are a key representative of the then-ongoing shift from a worldview ordered by immutable forms and universal laws to one that embraced change and epiphenomenal novelty. To close, differences between Darwin’s and Hegel’s thoughts on evolution are discussed, as well as their relation to Nietzsche’s thoughts on historical analysis. As these influential views are examined, comparisons, contrasts, and other connections to Nietzsche’s philologically-inspired approach are woven in.
This paper argues that Clark's and Dudrick's study of Beyond Good and Evil, despite numerous qualities and the correct conclusion that Nietzsche pursued a normative project, remains dissatisfying for two main reasons: 1) The methodological distinction between esoteric and exoteric doctrines, problematic as it is from the outset, would require a detailed genetic reconstruction of Nietzsche's ways of obscuring his 'real views' and of translating them into a new language. Clark and Dudrick, however, seem to use that distinction mainly to accommodate Nietzsche to their understanding of philosophy. 2) Their reconstruction of empiricist and idealistic epistemologies, given in terms of exclusive opposites, fails to appreciate how Nietzsche tries to replace such false contradictions with gradational differences and how he dialectically distributes approval and criticism to both explicitly and through the composition of his aphorisms.
Nietzsche and the Universality of the Contradictory Will to Power

Anahtar Kelimeler: Nietzsche, güce ulaşma arzusu, tabîî kuvvetler, tabiat karşıtı kuvvetler Summary The point of departure of the paper is contradictory interpretations of Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy. One large section of such interpretations emphasize the naturalistic tendencies in his philosophy while the second stressing the antinaturalistic counterparts. In order to fully grasp this diversity of interpretations it is important to
