Prosthetic rehabilitation over implant for total edentulous patients : overdenture and protocol (original) (raw)
2014
Abstract
Due to the large alveolar bone resorption present in total edentulous patients, ideal conditions for retention and stability to rehabilitate these patients with conventional dentures are not often achieved. The rehabilitation treatment for total edentulous patients by means of implant-retained dentures provides better stability and retention, increasing chewing efficiency and reducing the bone resorption process of the ridge. Nowadays, two treatment modes on prosthesis on implants in total edentulous patients are used: the overdentures and the fixed dentures (Brånemark First Protocol). Thus, it is essential for the treatment that the limitations of each type of prosthesis are clearly presented to patients before its confection, in order to prevent unrealistic expectations and subsequent frustrations. It was concluded that overdentures prosthesis are indicated for a minimum of two implants in the mandible and four in the maxilla and the protocol prosthesis are indicated for an ideal ...
