Laboratory Device Detecting the Magnitude of the Static Friction Coefficient of Brake Lining
Advances in Science and Technology Research Journal, 2021
The paper describes the design of laboratory equipment, which was created for verification and determination of the value of the static coefficient of friction in the contact surfaces of the brake lining and the brake drum of the drum brake with external shoes by experimental procedure. Suppliers of brake linings state the values of the friction coefficients which correspond to different operating temperatures, but do not state the values of the friction coefficient of the respective brake lining with regard to the state of contamination of the contact surfaces. In practice, the brake contact surfaces are exposed to moisture, dust, lubricants and oils; these weather and operational influences significantly affect the value of the coefficient of friction. The results of the laboratory tests performed with two types of brake linings (commonly used in practice) (fabric, hardened rubber) show that the coefficient of friction of a given brake lining is strongly influenced by the state of...
Design, construction and performance of a novel brake pad friction tester
Measurement, 2018
Determination of the tribological behavior of brake pads under real environmental conditions is an important and critical task which can significantly impact the automotive industry. Most studies simulate or measure the variants by indirect methods and accept them as true results. The new computer-controlled, interactive brake pad friction tester presented in this study was developed for this purpose. The major components of the machine, which are operated simultaneously, include: a proportional pressure-controlled hydraulics power pack, a mechanical transmission system with electromagnetic clutch, and a brake and automation control with SCADA computer analysis interface. Compared to other friction testing machines, a very important innovation of the newly developed friction tester allows for the testing of the brake pad samples and measuring of the noise level both to be performed with high precision under real conditions. Moreover, this friction tester is capable of determining the friction coefficients; wear behavior, temperature, and life intervals of brake pad samples. This novel brake pad system is relatively cheaper and measures effective friction coefficients more accurately. The uncertainty in measurements for friction coefficient and wear rate was approximately calculated as ± 0.0135 and ± 0.170 in all of experiments, respectively. In this study, the machine performance was carried out to evaluate the friction behavior of non-asbestos brake pad samples reinforced with hazelnut shell powder according to the standard brake lining quality control testing procedure (SAE J661).
Tribology and Materials
Contact between the automotive brake pad and the disc is mathematically modelled to estimate the coefficient of friction (COF). The mathematical model is proposed for the prognosis of the COF of brake pad material, by considering the contact mechanics between the interfacing surface and their material properties. The Greenwood-Williamson contact model is applied for rough contact surfaces for the estimation of the real contact radius. A MATLAB program has been formulated for generating the surface of brake pad material by considering its material properties which aid in the analytical evaluation of the COF. The proposed model is further validated with experimentation on pin-on-disc apparatus, as it is considered suitable for friction pad product testing according to previous research. The 25 pins were fabricated as per the ASTM G99 test for testing under varying loads and speeds. The obtained results showed that the range of COF has been between 0.2 and 0.4. The investigation presen...
Comparative Study of Friction Coefficient and Wear in Brake Pads for Disc Brakes
Volume 3: Design and Manufacturing, Parts A and B, 2010
The growing global production and competitiveness of automotive components; as well as, improvements and new developments in terms of designs, materials and standards have provided a wide range of qualities in spare parts products for dealers and their customers. However, sometimes there are not quantitative parameters to compare among manufacturers or dealers do not have the equipment, time and expertise to supply this information. This study presents a comparative test of performance for six different types of brake pads as function of friction coefficient and wear. A test bed composed by an instrumentation system, a braking system and a drive-train system was developed based on standards, then data obtained from measurements of thickness, mass loss, temperature and electric power consumption were used to make calculations and comparisons in order to determine the optimum values. Finally, it was observed that the optimum performance behavior of a brake pad is given as a combinatio...
The New Inertia Dynamometer for Friction and Wear Testing of Brake Pads and Brake Discs
2019
For the sake of driving safety, the right choice of the brake pad friction material and its manufacturing processes to obtain the appropriate tribological properties is a matter of priority for brake pad manufacturers. Determination of the tribological properties is best done in component tests, i.e. in the setup: brake pads – brake disc. At the request of one of the domestic brake pad manufacturers, as part of the POIR project, an inertia dynamometer for testing friction and wear of brake pads and brake discs was developed and manufactured, which was given the symbol T-33. A test methodology was developed based on the “Cold application section” procedure described in SAE J2522:2003. The T-33 inertia dynamometer is designed for testing brake pads and brake discs intended for five vehicles representing the passenger vehicle class and vans. The paper presents the new test stand, test methodology, and results of verification tests of the T-33 dynamometer (interlaboratory comparison tes...
New approach to brake pad wear modelling based on test stand friction-mechanical investigations
Eksploatacja i Niezawodność – Maintenance and Reliability
The paper presents the results of investigations of a railway disc brake system related to the mass wear of its brake pads. The tests were carried out on a certified brake stand designed to determine the friction-mechanical characteristics of the brakes. The test stand was additionally equipped with a thermographic camera to observe the contact points of the brake pads with the disc. Particular attention was drawn to investigating the impact on the mass wear of the brake pads of such parameters of the braking process as contact surface of the brake pad with the rotor, thickness of the brake pads as the indicator of their initial wear, clamping force of the pads against the rotor, rail vehicle mass to be decelerated, and speed, at which the deceleration begins. The scientific aim of the paper is to present the relations between the mass wear of the brake pads and the quantities that characterize the braking process. A regression model was determined to estimate the wear of the brake ...
Sensors
The article presents the results of friction and vibroacoustic tests of a railway disc brake carried out on a brake stand. The vibration signal generated by the friction linings provides information on their wear and offers evaluation of the braking process, i.e., changes in the average friction coefficient. The algorithm presents simple regression linear and non-linear models for the thickness of the friction linings and the average coefficient of friction based on the effective value of vibration acceleration. The vibration acceleration signals were analyzed in the amplitude and frequency domains. In both cases, satisfactory values of the dynamics of changes above 6 dB were obtained. In the case of spectral analysis using a mid-band filter, more accurate models of the friction lining thickness and the average coefficient of friction were obtained. However, the spectral analysis does not allow the estimation of the lining thickness and the friction coefficient at low braking speeds...
An Experimental Study of Automotive Disc Brake Vibrations
Friction-induced vibration of disc brakes is a topic of major interest and concern for the automotive industry. Customer complaints result in significant warranty costs yearly. In the present paper, a detailed experimental study of the disc brake vibration is performed on a simplified brake dynamometer. The preliminary brake dynamometer consists of three subsystems, namely driving unit, braking unit and measurement faciliti es. There are approximately twenty seven vibration tests are conducted at various operating conditions such as different brake-line pressure and disc speeds. It is observed that the peak value of the pad vibration amplitude emanates from all tests are dominant at frequency of 4.4 kHz. It is also found that the vibration level decreases with the increase of sliding speed. Moreover, it is observed that the vibration level decreases with the increases of applied pressure.
Inspecting a Bump Test in the Maintenance of a 1200-CC Daihatsu Sigra Disc Brake
SINERGI
A motorized vehicle needs a system that can not only reduce the speed and stop the vehicle but can also serve as a safety tool and ensure a safe distribution which is called a braking system. It is important to conduct maintenance of a disc brake that is part of the braking system. Therefore, this study developed a technique to inspect a 1200-cc Daihatsu Sigra disc brake through the vibration measurement using a bump test. A disc brake is comprised of three fields: A (located next to the center of the disc brake), B ( in the middle diameter), and C ( in the outer diameter of the disc brake). Each field has ten measurement points. This study showed that disc brake damages occurring in field A were at points 1-3, and they appeared after the 250-Hz frequency. Meanwhile, in fields B and C, at all measurement points, there were no changes taking place at any frequency.
