The effect of caring work environment model on nurses' burnout in general hospitals

Nurses belong to a profession that carries a high risk of burnout. This condition will have an impact on the performance and quality of nursing services. Efforts should be made to minimize burnout for nurses. Management of the nurses' work environment is one that should be done by the nurse manager. This study aimed to identify the effect of the implementation of a caring work environment by the head of the care unit on nurse burnout. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-and post-test with control group approach. Respondent of this study was 170 nurses who were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group consisted of nurses within the Caring Work Environment Model as applied by the head of the units. The control group included nurses working in the environment commonly applied in accordance with hospital policies in the inpatient unit. Burnout measurements on nurses applied preand post-intervention. Data analysis was performed using the Mann Whitney test. This research showed a decrease in emotional fatigue and depersonalization scores, and an increase in nurse personal accomplishment, (p<0.001) after the implementation of the nurse's caring work environment model by the head of care unit in the intervention group. Within the control group, only personal accomplishment showed increased scores, (p=0.034). Reduction in burnout symptoms in nurses can be facilitated through the implementation of a caring work environment by the head of the care unit.
Nurse Perceived of Caring Leadership: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

BACKGROUND: The leader’s attitude or behavior to staff or subordinates greatly determined a conducive working atmosphere in a hospital. Decrease in performance and job dissatisfaction will impact work productivity, attendance (absenteeism), the quality of services provided, and the exit of the workforce itself (turn-over). This is why the importance of a harmonious relationship between a leader and his staff or subordinates. AIM: This study aims to determine nurses’ views regarding caring leadership of the head of the room. Nurses have complex levels of work stress. The level of boredom, job recovery and feeling depressed are factors that trigger work stress. Job stress occurs because of the imbalance between personality characteristics with the characteristics of the aspects of work and can occur in all jobs Leadership style can be interpreted as a special feature of the form of leadership consisting of 3 leadership styles, namely autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. This study discusses the relationship of leadership style with work stress levels. This research was conducted by descriptive analytic method with cross sectional research design. The study was conducted from June to August 2018. The sampling technique used was total sampling as many as 76 people. Data analysis techniques used the chi-square test. The results showed the leadership style used by the head of the room (80.3%) coordination, (15.8%) authoritarian, and (3.9%) Laissez-faire (free relations). The work stress of implementing nurses (68.4%) is high and (31.6%) low. There is an interesting relationship between leadership style with the work stress of implementing nurses, with a value of p = 0.016. The conclusion of this study is that most of the head of rooms use a supportive leadership style with high stress levels. Suggestions from this study, leadership that can support the leadership style that is applied to the policies and requirements in the room and nurses can get special training to overcome the stress problems experienced by nurses at work.
Leadership Style Influence on Nurses’ Burnout: A Systematic Review

Introduction: We intend to evaluate the current literature, published from 2019 to 2022 and study the types of leadership styles and how they affected nurse burnout. Aims: the research was to systematically review the influence of leadership style on nurse burnout. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted through an electronic search in three databases and was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) with some inclusion criteria compiled by the research objective. Results A total of 15 selected articles show that leadership styles affected nurse burnout both directly and indirectly. This systematic review shows that some leadership styles had an influence on increasing nurse burnout, as well as affecting their job satisfaction, psychological distress and their intention to leave. Some other leadership styles also influenced reducing nurse burnout and increasing their work engagement. Conclusions Due to the variety of leadership styles studied in the articles, it's hard to draw specific conclusions. However, this systematic review shows most of the articles stated that some specific leadership styles took part in increasing nurse burnout, and some other leadership styles were able to reduce nurse burnout in particular.
Relationship of Burnout Level with Nurse Caring Perception in Emergency Departments

Emergency departments nurses are prone to burnout because they are dealing with emotional patients and families, and the number of visits is more than the number of nurses on duty. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between burnout levels and perceptions of caring for nurses in the emergency departments. The research design used a descriptive correlational. The research instrument used 2 questionnaires, namely the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Service Survey, to measure the level of burnout (low, medium, and high) and the Caring Behavior Inventory-24 to measure perceptions of caring (good and poor). The study population consisted of nurses in the Emergency Departments in Dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung Hospital with a sample size using a total sampling technique of 50 nurses. Univariate analysis for each variable is presented with a frequency distribution table and bivariate analysis using the Rank Spearman test. The results showed that nurses' burnout level was in a low category (60%), and the perception of nurses caring was in a good category (64%). The relationship test results obtained a negative correlation (p-value = 0.000; r =-0.607), which means that the higher the burnout level, the lower the caring perception that is owned. The study concludes that most nurses have a low level of burnout and a good perception of caring. Hospitals are advised to maintain or eliminate low burnout by carrying out a sharing program between nurses or counseling and maintaining good caring by conducting caring simulation training.
Caring and Burnout in Registered Nurses: What’s the Connection?

This study examined the relationship between caring and burnout in a sample of 888 registered nurses. The revised Caring Behaviors Inventory (Wolf, Giardino, Osborne, & Ambrose, 1994) was used to measure the dimensions of caring. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1986) was used to measure the dimensions of burnout. Multiple regression analysis was conducted between each dimension of burnout and carative factors. Four carative factors were identified that affected a nurse’s level of burnout. These factors had the greatest impact on the burnout dimension of reduced personal accomplishment. Overall, increases in caring led to decreased burnout for this sample.
Job Demands, Leaders' Support and Burnout of Nurses in Indonesia

One of the social service workers is a nurse, who has a very demanding job. Job demands refer to the physical, psychological, social aspects of a job that require physical and psychological abilities on an ongoing basis which can lead to job stress, depression, and fatigue This study aimed to determine the relationship between job demands and leaders' support with burnout of nurses in the inpatient room of Muntilan Regional Hospital, Magelang Regency. The research design used was quantitative with crosssectional survey data collection methods using a closed questionnaire. The three instruments used have validity and reliability values of more than 0.80. The sample in this study was 49 nurses in the inpatient room who were selected by random sampling. Data were analyzed statistically using the Spearmen Rank Test. There was a significant relationship with a strong positive pattern between work demands and burnout (p = 0.001; α = 0.05 with r = 0.490), meaning that the higher the work demands, the greater the burnout. Meanwhile, for leaders' support for burnout, it is known that there is a significant relationship with a strong negative pattern between leaders' support and burnout (p = 0.001; α = 0.05 with r =-0.526) meaning that the more leaders' support, the smaller the incidence of burnout.
Examination of burnout levels of nurses in terms of some variables: a case of foundation university

Background: Health care is a field that every individual frequently needs or refers to. Both the long working and the hierarchy between collegues create a pressure on subordinates. Nurses, who are one of the most important performers of the health care system nourish a feeling of exasperation and feel no longer commited to their job. This state, which is defined as a burnout syndrome does not only affect the individual but also the whole organization. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in this research aimed burnout levels of nurses working in different cliniques to come to know if there are differences of levels among the nurses. The data of this study were collected from the nurses working in a charity hospital in Ankara, Turkey by a 2-part measurement tool developed by the researcher. Results: The burnout levels of the nurses differ significantly in the total score of MBI as a whole, according to get permission from the workplace, frequency of get into trouble with the fellow workers, unauthorized tasks, presence of motivational elements at their institution variables. The burnout syndrome has no relation with the nurses' marital statues or having children or their income state, their working time nor the division they are working at. The burnout level of the nurses researched are at a midlevel. Conclusions: Situations such as staying at weekend breaks, problems with other workers, conflicts with colleagues cause high level of burnout in nurses.
