Engineering design is being carried out by distributed design teams in an effort to use expert human resources more efficiently. The support needs of distributed design are reviewed from a cognitive viewpoint using five broad categories: design methodology, collaboration, teamwork, knowledge management and design representation. Web-based implementation of iterative, structured design methodologies allow greater accessibility to tools and methodologies and more consistent interfaces. Collaboration requires successful and efficient sharing of knowledge, negotiation, coordination and management of activities. In distributed environments, organizational factors and decisions that foster teamwork must be mediated by technology. Design intent, rationale and history are important basic types of knowledge that knowledge management systems are required to capture, organize and manipulate to help generate new design knowledge. Efficient methods of representing design artefacts in different forms are needed that allow designers to interact most efficiently as well as support knowledge capture, transformation and collaborative activities.
Tools and techniques for distributed collaborative design and knowledge management
Synopsis This paper reports on the progress of an investigation into, and development of, new methodologies and techniques for the management of knowledge in a distributed and collaborative design environment at the conceptual stage. The paper briefly covers existing tools and techniques for collaborative design and knowledge management and proposes methods for overcoming the shortcomings of present techniques. A brief description of an application in the process of implementation is presented, along with a proposition for future development.
Supporting dynamic management in a multi-agent collaborative design system

In this paper, we propose a multi-agent collaborative design system in which human designers and software agents interact with each other, exchange design information and keep track of state information to assist with collaborative design. The hierarchical multi-agent system architecture offers a promising framework with their novel approaches for dynamically creating and managing design tasks in widely distributed and ever-changing design environments while the knowledge based design approach provide a foundation for supporting reusable design abilities. Collaboration benefits the process of complex design. However, there are many communication problems among different stakeholders in the domain of industrial design. In addition, the sharing of real-time information and updating information can also pose difficulties. This paper proposes an agent-based collaborative system to support stakeholders to deal with the complex communication problems and information management. The system is composed of both a web-based collaborative system to communicate and share information immediately, and a multi-agent system (MAS) integrated with KW architecture to possess different levels of competence at performing a particular task. The objective is to provide different stakeholders with an effective communication platform to integrate a variety of representational methods of transferring knowledge and the multi-agents that represent different stakeholders to simulate the communication and collaboration in the real world. To demonstrate the proposed concepts, a system prototype has been implemented for notebook design for the company ASUS, a leading notebook manufacturer based in Taiwan.
An ontology-based multi-agent environment to improve collaborative design

The paper presents a knowledge-based approach for collaborative design using a task ontology and a multi-agent architecture. In an educational project, students from two different countries must collaborate to design an electro-mechanical device. Collaboration is a fragile question in pedagogical environments because students very often develop activities in an isolated way and there is no real exchange of knowledge. We offer a tool for improving the early stages of collaboration through a system that provides communication support for design or project management tasks. Agents use knowledge to guide users during the collaborative process. Our multi-agent system works in a passive way. Students are free to accept the suggestions/directions of the system or not. A personal assistant captures and shares personal knowledge (experiences) while cognitive autonomous agents use ontologies to guide the interactions among the students. Generating design activities through sketches in multi-agent systems

This study describes a multi-agent system that acts as a mediator between the designer and the information environment. The system enables designers to locate and retrieve information from distributed resources. There are three types of agents in the proposed model. The duser agentsT consist of designers, engineers, and technicians. The dinformation agentsT include various knowledge domains as legislation, codes, previous cases, expert domains. The dcommunication agentsT that identify and match agents are based on the goals and agentTs interest. The communication agents working over the Web use sketches as a collaboration medium in the conceptual phase of the design process. The results of the empirical study showed that the design domain and variables; and design strategies and activities are not independent of each other. The quality of a project increases as the communication increases among collaborators during the conceptual design phase and the Internet provides a suitable medium for communication through sketches. Real world engineering design projects require the cooperation of multidisciplinary design teams using sophisticated and powerful engineering tools. The individuals or the individual groups of the multidisciplinary design teams work in parallel and independently with the different engineering tools which are located on the different sites for often a long time. In order to ensure the coordination of the design activities of the different groups or the cooperation among the different engineering tools, it is necessary to develop an efficient distributed intelligent design environment. This paper discusses a distributed axchitecturc for integrating such engineering tools in an open design environment organized as a population of asynchronous cognitive agents. Before introducing the general architecture and the communicat.ion protocol, issues about the agent axchitecture azLd the inter-agent communication axe discussed. A prototype of such an environment with seven independent agents located in the different workstations and microcomputers is presented and an example of a sin',all mechanical design is used for demonstrating such an environment.
Knowledge level model of an individual designer as an agent in collaborative distributed design

In this paper a knowledge-level model of an individual designer as an agent is described, in which reflective reasoning about elements of situatedness, and reasoning from the point of view of other participants, are explicitly modelled. This model is based on existing models of single agent design. An individual designer in a specific distributed design process, namely website design, is used to illustrate the model.
