Computer-based plagiarism detection techniques: A comparative study

Plagiarism is becoming more of a problem in academics. It's made worse by the ease with which a wide range of resources can be found on the internet, as well as the ease with which they can be copied and pasted. It is academic theft since the perpetrator has "taken" and presented the work of others as his or her own. Manual detection of plagiarism by a human being is difficult, imprecise, and time-consuming because it is difficult for anyone to compare their work to current data. Plagiarism is a big problem in higher education, and it can happen on any topic. Plagiarism detection has been studied in many scientific articles, and methods for recognition have been created utilizing the Plagiarism analysis, Authorship identification, and Near-duplicate detection (PAN) Dataset 2009-2011. Verbatim plagiarism, according to the researchers, plagiarism is simply copying and pasting. They then moved on to smart plagiarism, which is more challenging to spot since it might include text change, taking ideas from other academics, and translation into a more difficult-to-manage language. Other studies have found that plagiarism can obscure the scientific content of publications by swapping words, removing or adding material, or reordering or changing the original articles. This article discusses the comparative study of plagiarism detection techniques.
Our objective was to identify the understanding of theoretical aspects and the interpretation of practical situations that a sample of 3,623 graduate students (Population = 22,438) at the University of São Paulo (USP, Brazil) have regarding academic plagiarism. The survey, conducted in 2012 and 2013, used an electronic questionnaire containing 30 multiple choice questions developed from the literature concerning the concept and definition of plagiarism (U.. We identified that the fact of respondents agreeing or disagreeing with the theoretical-conceptual characteristics of plagiarism did not make a difference in their capacity of correctly assessing practical situations characterizing plagiarism. Moreover, the agreement or disagreement responses regarding the concepts of plagiarism were observed not to differ among the respondents who had been trained to use references and citations. However, the same respondents correctly interpret practical situations characterizing plagiarism. Therefore, this study highlights the idea that there is a gap between theoretical and practical knowledge regarding plagiarism. We conclude that although the technical training related to the correct use of research sources is an important prerequisite in the capacity-building process, it is not enough for academic plagiarism to be prevented.
Manifestations of Plagiarism and the Need for Plagiarism Check in Scholarly Writings

This paper describes the occurrence and manifestations of plagiarism in scholarly literature. It points out the reasons prompting to adopt plagiarism, the various types of it and the different unethical methods that the authors adopt while writing papers, theses etc. The authors list some nine software, with their place of origin, for automatically checking and estimating the exact similarity index for a given work. A few incidents involving plagiarism cases are also cited. check has been developed during the recent past. This paper outlines the various reasons for adopting plagiarism, the types and methods of occurrence and the commonly used software to check plagiarism.
Academic plagiarism from the perspective of students
Plagiarism is a matter of great interest and concern in academia. Sadly, there are few reports on plagiarism in Mexico. The educational model of our institution is called “Modular System” and is a model focused on problem solving-based learning. Therefore, since the first course, students must devote a lot of to development of research and reporting it. In this way, in some cases, plagiarism is a phenomenon that could occupy special significance. The objectives of this work were: (1) to assess the frequency of various activities or practices considered academically inadequate during the development of research papers in a sample of first year students of the degrees offered by the Division of Biological and Health Sciences of our University, (2) to compare the frequency of inadequate academic practices of students which were observed in other Spanishspeaking institutions, and (3) to propose strategies for promoting the implementation of good academic practices in the preparation of their reports and tasks.

Investigating Plagiarism: The Form and the Motivation in Performing Plagiarism in High Education
The rapid development of information technology, especially the Internet is pointed out to be factor driving the student to practice plagiarism. Prevention efforts continue to be made both from government policies and stakeholder by creating software anti-plagiarism. However, in the reality the practice of plagiarism remains common and relatively more widespread. This practice continues to be varied, so that we need to update the information and findings through investigations plagiarism practices in student assignments. The method used was a mixed-method approach or mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. A quantitative approach was done by using software turnitin.com to scan for plagiarism indication of the level of student assignment in common. To study the behavior of plagiarism, the interview process was also done informally to students who commit high plagiarism. The results showed that the pattern of students' plagiarism consists of five forms: sham paraphrasing, illicit paraphrasing, other plagiarism, copying verbatim and purloining. Illicit paraphrasing practices are a form of copy-paste literature review and did not pay attention to the bibliography. Besides, the practice of plagiarism is closely associated with low academic writing knowledge. Therefore, the practice of plagiarism should not only be viewed from the perspective of the academic violations, but also from the other perspectives.

The study of academic plagiarism among university students is at an embryonic stage in Spain and in the other Spanish-speaking countries. This article reports the results of a research, carried out in a medium-sized Spanish university, based on a double method approach-quantitative and qualitative-concerning the factors associated with academic plagiarism from the students' perspective. The main explanatory factors of the phenomenon, according to the results obtained, are: a) aspects and behaviour of students (bad time management, personal shortcomings when preparing assignments, the elevated number of assignments to be handed in, etc.); b) the opportunities conferred by information and communication technologies to locate, copy and paste information; and, finally, c) aspects related to professors-lecturers and/or the characteristics of the subject-course (lecturers who show no interest in their work, eminently theoretical subjects and assignments, etc.).
Relevancy of free online software and websites in detection of plagiarism

The majority of websites offering free plagiarism checking services failed to detect plagiarized content effectively. The level of detected plagiarism differs in the different websites for the same content. Hence, checking the manuscript on multiple websites would provide relatively better screening results for plagiarism.
