Resumo: A presente pesquisa consiste no estudo arquitetônico do Edifício Chagas Rodrigues, sede do DER em Teresina, no Piauí, como forma de reconhecimento desse espaço e, assim, discussão de perspectivas que abordem a sua preservação. O projeto do arquiteto carioca Maurício Sued, datado de 1955, é considerado o primeiro edifício modernista do estado. Exemplo característico da Escola Carioca de Arquitetura, ele apresenta os princípios corbusianos de fachada e planta livres da estrutura e uso de pilotis no térreo livre, além da volumetria prismática simples, rompida pela escada helicoidal, e o painel do artista Genes. A adaptação ao clima se faz presente nas fachadas, com cobogós a oeste e esquadrias recuadas e brises a leste. O edifício é testemunho de um período de modernização da cidade e ao longo de sua trajetória constituiu um importante marco na paisagem da Avenida Frei Serafim, tendo sido tombado a nível estadual em 1997. Porém, essa medida isolada se mostrou insuficiente para sua conservação adequada, como atesta a condição do imóvel hoje, fazendo-se necessária a adoção de outras ações que demandam estudos e análises da sua significação e atual estado. O trabalho contribui para a preservação do bem estudado ao promover sua identificação e apropriação, lançando mão de pesquisa e aprofundamento da reflexão acerca dele. Foram realizadas pesquisas histórica, arquitetônica, iconográfica e bibliográfica para conhecimento da trajetória do bem ao longo do tempo, além de levantamentos e registros fotográficos do atual estado do edifício, registrando todos os danos presentes e as iniciativas previstas para repará-los, de modo a fundamentar a análise e discussão sobre ele. Promove-se, assim, a difusão do conhecimento desse importante bem cultural teresinense, na perspectiva da sua preservação.

Abstract: This paper consists in the architectural study of Edifício Chagas Rodrigues, the headquarters of DER in Teresina, Piauí, as a means for the recognition of this space and, furthermore, the discussion of perspectives that regard its preservation. The architect from Rio Maurício Sued’s design, dated from 1955, is considered to be the first Modernist building in the state. A characteristic example of the Escola Carioca de Arquitetura, it presents the corbusian principles of façade and plan free from the structure, pilotis and free ground floor, in addition to the simple prismatic volume, broken by the helicoidal staircase, and the panel by artist Genes. Adaptation to the climate is present in the façades, with cobogós in the West and indented windows and brises in the East. The building bears witness to a period of modernization in the city and throughout its history has become an important landmark in Avenue Frei Serafim, having been inscribed in the state-level Livro do Tombo in 1997. However, this isolated measure has not been enough for its adequate preservation, as attested by the building’s present condition, which calls for the adoption of other measures that in turn demand studies and analyses of its significance and current condition. This research contributes to the preservation of the architectural asset by promoting its identification and appropriation, through research and analysis of it. For this, the authors did historical, architectural, iconographic and bibliographic research to achieve proper knowledge of the building’s trajectory through time, and also the inspection and photographing of its current state, registering all the damage present and the initiatives programmed to be taken to address them, so as to substantiate the analysis and discussion regarding it. It is promoted, thus, the diffusion of knowledge about this important cultural asset from Teresina, in the perspective of its preservation.
