COVID-19 negatively affected surgical activity, but the potential benefits resulting from adopted measures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in surgical activity and potential benefit from COVID-19 measures in perspective of Italian surgeons on behalf of SPIGC. A nationwide online survey on surgical practice before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic was conducted in March–April 2022 (NCT:05323851). Effects of COVID-19 hospital-related measures on surgical patients’ management and personal professional development across surgical specialties were explored. Data on demographics, pre-operative/peri-operative/post-operative management, and professional development were collected. Outcomes were matched with the corresponding volume. Four hundred and seventy-three respondents were included in final analysis across 14 surgical specialties. Since SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, application of telematic consultations (4.1% vs. 21.6%; p < 0.0001) and diagnostic evalua...

Saint Gregory of Nazianzus. Autobiographical Verses — The period of Late Antiquity is an important milestone in the development of what we now call autobiographical writing. For the first time, a genealogical lineage can be reconstructed between forms of self-expression whose authors became increasingly aware of the distinction between the act of remembering and the act of writing. The book focuses on the literary works of Gregory of Nazianzus (329/330 - 389/390), the Cappadocian theologian and poet who is believed to have produced the first large-scale corpus of autobiographical poetry (nearly 7,000 verses) in Europe. The individual chapters address a range of issues related to self-representation in Late Antiquity: the methods of reflecting reality in art, the theological and philosophical frameworks of self-perception, poetic imagery and topoi. They also discuss Gregory’s oscillation between sincerity and didacticism, in line with the ancient conception of the individual as inseparable from society. The heart of the book, however, is the complete translation of Gregory’s autobiographical poetry as it appears in the 37th volume of Jacques-Paul Migne’s Patrologia Graeca (1857) and in more recent critical editions. The poems, rendered in a syllabotonic imitation of classical metres, are accompanied by indexes and extensive footnotes. The reader can thus enjoy an unconventional portrait of a saint who dared to combine lyrical lamentation with irony and even sarcasm.

In this bachelor's thesis I will focus on Kendall Walton's interpretation of the theory of emotions evoked by fiction, presented primarily in his book Mimesis as Make - Believe: On the Foundations of the Representational Arts and a number of articles. First, I will analyse how in general Kendall Walton views the nature of emotions experienced in perceiving fiction. I will deal with the term "game of make - believe", which Walton introduces to describe the reader's or the viewer's experience with fiction. Using the concept of game of make - believe Walton points out the character of the emotions evoked by fiction. I will perform a comprehensive analysis of Walton's term "quasi - emotions". The bachelor's thesis will be divided into two main parts. In the first part, I will interpret Walton's studies. In the second part, I will approach the topic critically and confront his thesis with the arguments by Noël Carroll and Richard Moran, who...

Laments of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus — This article examines sixteen autobiographical poems by Gregory of Nazianzus, devoted to the sorrowful complaints of an ageing clergyman. The main aim is to determine whether, on the basis of their formal and thematic characteristics, they can be regarded as examples of a particular genre. The answer seems to be yes, although it is clearly not a genre that fits into the system established in the Archaic and Classical periods of Greek literature. There is no doubt that Gregory uses certain elements of the ancient Greek θρῆνος and ἐλεγεία, but he relies much more heavily on genre patterns derived from Old Testament poetry. It seems more appropriate, then, to speak of a distinct variant of the lament genre, dominated by the motifs of sickness, rebellious and lustful flesh, and death, understood as the gateway to freedom. In general, Gregory’s laments combine life experience with fiction, and didactic intention with private expression of grief. However, their tone is not bleak and hopeless, for they follow the lament-to-praise structure found, for example, in Psalm 22 (21).

This contribution discusses the results from a working group on the topic "Autobiography and education" within the Symposium 'Dialogue in Autobiography' held in Anghiari on December 7, 2019. The educational practises concerning memory, reading, narration and autobiographical writing have found an important and growing place in formal and informal education, especially over the last twenty years. Autobiografie. Ricerche, pratiche, esperienze and gain a wider knowledge and skills regarding autobiographical pedagogy and teaching methods. This contribution is authored by three professors from different pedagogical areas (historical-educative, teaching and pedagogicalsocial) and discusses theories and formative strategies for promoting learning and self-training processes, i.e., making history, reading, life-writing and community sharing. This poses a challenge for a new humanisation, moving from education to the stories. Greene’s position at the Foreign Office, as well as his travels around the world’s most chaotic regions during the most chaotic period of human
history, makes him an ideal specimen for analyzing the personal histories and encounters of a colonizer and a colonized figure in such times. At this time, Zadie Smith claims that Greene has witnessed some of the world’s most tumultuous battles and that people are still battling over old grievances (2004, p. viii). One of Greene’s most astute insights is the complication with which a definitive intervention is necessary for the characters’ acts. This challenge throughout Greene’s world stems mainly from humanity’s mutual influences and partly from his ethical principles. The combination of powers inside and out of the human soul generates the feeling of an unseen requirement that seems to regulate the main
character’s decisions at critical points. It is driven by his early childhood
memories, a Christian and perhaps spiritual code, or irrational anxieties and wishes. The powers of systemic racism, cruelty, crime, and corruption, which embody the fading authority of wickedness, are challenging to reverse.

This thesis focuses on the process of phenomenologically dwelling in selected works of children’s fiction. It was undertaken against a backdrop of disconnect from the teaching profession and a need to reconnect with private and professional self. The thesis opens by acknowledging the conditions that sometimes pull teachers out of their zone of flow, or their in-teacher-ness. It recognises that revisiting lived experiences, and understanding their essence, may shed light on the nature of these conditions. A theoretical framework is established, upholding the value of perception in phenomenology, the way intentionality affects our interactions with the world, and the meaning of being. A secondary framework of autobiographical writing is also applied, encouraging authentic writing of self. The value of fiction as truth-seeking material is debated, concluding that its readers can employ imagination, study emotions and gain self-understanding. The thesis is then structured like a journey, set out in methodological steps underpinned with theoretical literature and evidenced by autobiographical writing outcomes about remembered lived experiences. Using childhood fiction, and stories used professionally in the classroom, each incremental step involved in text-dwelling is documented and theoretically scrutinised. The final stage explores writing authentically with intentionality. It is suggested that dwelling in fiction, and understanding the impact of in-conscientious-ness on work ethic and mindset, can explain some of the conditions affecting in-teacher-ness. There is an emphasis on employing these dwelling steps for teachers and pupils, concluding that the process sits comfortably alongside current reflection tools taught in initial teacher training and professional settings.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, socioeconomic inequalities have become exacerbated and COVID-19 related hate crimes have increased. This paper explores how citizenship education might be reimagined in response to this context, with the vision of rebuilding a more equitable and compassionate society. By using a collective autobiographical writing approach, this study documented six different autobiographical reflexivities of citizenship education scholars who were from different parts of the world: China, South Korea, the Philippines, the United States, Nepal and the United Kingdom. It also observed the way the pandemic played out in the location where they were situated during the research as well as how it played out in their countries of origin, and further, how it affected the civic development in each context. The scholars' range of autobiographical expressions resulted in insights for developing a type of citizenship education, namely, education for active and compassionate citizenship.

Bodily disintegration and successful ageing in Body Bereft by Antjie Krog Antjie Krog's Body Bereft (2006) details both the bodily changes brought about by older age and the ways in which these changes fracture a person's previously-stable sense of self. This article reads Krog's depiction of the ageing body in a small selection of poems from this collection in relation to the unavoidable reality of bodily decay and what is referred to in gerontological theory as 'successful ageing'. This tension dominates large parts of the gerontological field, and can be seen in Krog's ambivalent representation of older age in Body Bereft. Through close readings of a number of poems, I will investigate the ways in which Krog problematises the relationship between the lived experience of older age with its concomitant sense of deterioration, and the societal impetus to age well and accept ageing with magnanimity. I will demonstrate that this collection foregrounds the poet's refusal to accept pre-existing discourses that delimit ageing as something either to bemoan or celebrate. I will conclude that this refusal finds particular expression in her poems "dommelfei / crone in the woods" and "how do you say this".

) is a writer that has been completely ignored by literary histories. Her profile is presented only in recent dictionaries and the bibliographical references regarding her activity are limited only to a few dozen titles. In the writer's biography there are still unexplored aspects and sometimes even flaws. Nevertheless, her life was dedicated to cultural values and her literary activity was rewarded with the Alina Ştirbey Prize and with the Academy's Award, which she received three times. The novel "Blandina", written in French and having the subtitle "Une âme s'ouvre à la vie" ("A Soul Opens to Life"), came out in 1980, thirty years after the writer's death, translated by Emilia Şt. Milicescu. An autobiographical novel, a Bildungsroman that restores the life line, the experiences connected to her intellectual and spiritual formation and her burning passion for work, "Blandina" remained, just like the author's other novels, unknown to the public, as well as to the chroniclers of those times. The protagonist crosses a path of self-knowledge, doubled by the achievement of virtues. The path to wisdom is sprinkled, just like in fairytales or in initiatory stories, with tasks that she must accomplish by fighting instincts or vices. Thus, writing becomes a place of searching for one's identity and the ethical dimension is one of the main keys of reading.

All writing worth reading comes, like suicide from outrage or revenge', writes William Gaddis in his novella, Agape Agape (Gaddis 2002, p. 63). These are the words of Gaddis's fictional character, an elderly man with a terminal illness, rambling on about his dissatisfactions at the decline of civilization and grumbling about the book he never managed to write. I take these words, although controversial, as a starting point to my argument that traumatic experience can give rise to feelings of shame, rage and the desire for revenge. If such emotions are harnessed they can lead to creativity, particularly in the autobiographical act of life writing. In arguing for a psychoanalytic object relations approach to trauma, psychoanalyst Caroline Garland, writes that 'trauma touches and disrupts the core of … identity … Trauma is like a wound', she writes (1998, p. 9-11). It pierces the psychic

Background: Abiraterone acetate (AA) is approved by FDA as second line treatment for patients (pts) with CRPC that experience disease progression after first line docetaxel chemotherapy. AA is a potent inhibitor of both 17ahydroxylase and 17,20-lyase (CYP17) activity. This inhibition may produce an increase in the concentrations of steroids synthesized upstream of the CPY17, with consequent adverse effects as hypokalemia, fluid retention and hypertension. Patients and Methods: Since November 2011, 28 pts with CRPC treated at IRCCS of Candiolo received AA plus prednisone (5 mg twice daily). Pts had undergone previous treatment with one or more lines of chemotherapy, in particular 89.3% of pts (25/28) had been treated with docetaxel (schedule 75 mg/m 2 1/21), 35,7% of pts (10/28) received two lines of chemotherapy (docetaxel followed by mitoxantrone), 10.7% of pts (3/28) underwent chemotherapy with docetaxel with weekly schedule, one patient was treated with two lines of docetaxel, and one patient with a rechallenge of docetaxel after previous docetaxel and mitoxantrone chemotherapies. Twelve patients are still undergoing treatment with AA. We recorded all grades toxicity (according to NCI-CTACE v 4.0), with special regard to those related to the mineralcorticoid excess that may be induced by AA. Results: All pts included in the study had a good performance status (ECOG 0-1). Median age was 72.5 years (range 54-79) and 10 pts (35.7%) were older than 75 years. Hypertension was the most frequent adverse event and occurred in the totality of pts, though it was not worsened by therapy with AA and only 7 cases (25%) presented grade 3 toxicity. Hypokalemia occurred in 7.1% of pts (2/28), all cases were grade 1, without any indication for prompt correction. The incidence of fluid retention was 14.3% (4/28) and grade 1 or 2 peripheral oedema accounted for most of these events. There was no onset of cardiac arrhythmias. Other common toxicities included back pain (32.1%), fatigue (39.3%), arthralgia (21.4%) diarrhea (18%), vomiting (7.1%) and nausea (7.1%). Anemia occurred in 21% of patients and was of grade 3 in one case. Conclusion: Abiraterone acetate has a very favorable toxicity profile, with low incidence of grade 3 toxicities and is a feasible treatment even for patients with hypertension.

Purpose The aims of our retrospective study investigated the role of immune system in glioblastoma (GBM), which is the most aggressive primary brain tumor in adults characterized by a poor prognosis. The recurrence rate remains high, probably due to "immune-desert" tumor microenvironment (TME) making GBM hidden from the anti-tumoral immune clearance. Considering this, we aimed to create a panel of prognostic markers from blood and tumor tissue correlating with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Methods Firstly, we analyzed the inflammatory markers NLR and PLR as the ratio of the absolute neutrophil count and absolute platelet count by the absolute lymphocyte count respectively, collected at different time points in the peripheral blood of 95 patients. Furthermore, in 31 patients of the same cohort, we analyzed the formalin-fixed paraffin embedded samples to further compare the impact of circulating and inflammatory markers within the TME. Results Patients aged < 60 years and with methylated MGMT showed better OS. While, pre-chemotherapy Systemic Inflammatory Index (SII) < 480 was related to a better OS and PFS, we observed that only CD68+macrophage and CD66b+neutrophils expressed in vascular/perivascular area (V) showed a statistically significant prognostic role in median OS and PFS. Conclusions Thus, we underscored a role of SII as predictive value of response to STUPP protocol. Regarding the TMErelated markers, we suggested to take into consideration for future studies with new immunotherapy combinations, each component relating to expression of immune infiltrating subsets.

Methods: Four ESMO Designated Centres of Integrated Oncology & Palliative Care (ESMO-DC) randomized pts to receive Standard Oncologic Care (SOC) alone (control arm-C) or integrated with EPC (sperimental armS). Eligible pts had diagnosis, within the previous eight weeks, of advanced NSCLC, gastric, pancreatic and biliary cancers; first line chemotherapy; ECOG PS 0-2. QoL was assessed at baseline (T0) and at 12 weeks (T1) with the FACT-G scale. Primary endpoint was the change in the QoL scores from T0 and T1.

e15571 Background: Currently, no validated biomarkers are available for second-line anti-angiogenic treatment in RAS wild type (wt) metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients (pts) progressing after first-line anti-EGFR. Here, we present the results of a pre-planned interim analysis of the DISTINCTIVE trial (NCT04252456) on prognostic groups identified with the combination of hematologic parameters and based on the association of clinical and translational biomarkers. Methods: RAS wt mCRC pts progressing after first line oxaliplatin-based + anti-EGFR therapy receive FOLFIRI-aflibercept and are prospectively stratified in 2 groups according to Elisa-assessed baseline VEGFR2 plasma levels. Other circulating angiogenic factors are evaluated at specific timepoints. Clinical and laboratory data are collected to assess their correlation with outcome. Primary endpoint is overall survival (OS) according to VEGFR2 levels. Secondary endpoints are OS, progression free survival (PFS), respons...

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had a huge impact on healthcare systems, resulting in many routine diagnostic procedures either being halted or postponed. Aims: To evaluate whether the diagnoses of colorectal, gastric and pancreatic cancers have been impacted by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Italy. Methods: A survey designed to collect the number of histologically-proven diagnoses of the three cancers in gastroenterology services across Italy from January 1 to October 31 in 2017-2020. Non-parametric ANOVA for repeated measurements was applied to compare distributions by years and macro-areas. Results: Compared to 2019, in 2020 gastric cancer diagnoses decreased by 15.9%, CRC by 11.9% and pancreatic by 9.9%. CRC distributions showed significant differences between all years, stomach cancer be
