Intertidal sediments of the inner and middle zone from the Bahı ´a Blanca estuary were sampled for geochemical and environmental assessment of metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cr and Fe). Results indicate that both the organic matter content and the sediment grain size plays an important role in controlling the differential concentrations of the metals found in sediments from both zones. For most of the elements (except Mn), sediment metal concentrations were greater in the middle zone, although the concentrations did not exceed the maximums for quality of marine sediments. In this sense, anthropogenic impact (i.e., sewage drain) appears to be a key factor in the distribution of metals within the estuarine system. Comparing the levels obtained with quality levels (LEL and SEL), except Cu that showed levels slightly above the LEL, the rest of the concentrations of metals were lower to those levels. The low metal concentrations obtained within this highly impacted estuarine system suggest that the great volume of water that flooding the extensive flats in each tidal cycle has much importance. Although the potential risks of metals to the estuarine environment were low, taking into account the toxicity of some of these metals, continuity of monitoring is highly recommended.

Concentrations of six trace metals were determined in the eggshells of American oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus) from the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina. All metals measured in selected samples presented concentrations above the detection limit. Means found for Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn and Ni were as follow: 2.02 ± 0.52, 7.23 ± 2.33, 0.78 ± 0.03, 2.22 ± 1.13 and 6.05 ± 0.89 mg/kg dw. The mean concentrations of Cd found were surprisingly high: 13.28 ± 3.38 mg/kg dw. Previous studies made on prey items of the American oystercatchers showed low to medium concentrations of the six trace metals. This may indicate a possible transfer of the metals that are available in the environment through food chains. Our study indicates that American oystercatchers sequester heavy metals in their eggshells. Therefore the eggshells may be useful as biomonitors for trace metal contamination in the Bahía Blanca estuary.

Se realizaron análisis sedimentológicos y estratigráficos con el objeto de establecer las condiciones que originaron un gran afloramiento de una roca de playa en la costa norte del estuario de Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Dicha roca aflora sobre una planicie intermareal fangosa a lo largo de 2,5 km y presenta una suave pendiente hacia el mar (SE). Su matriz (arena gruesa-muy gruesa, grava y escasos fragmentos de moluscos) se halla fuertemente cementada por carbonatode calcio. Los datos sismoacústicos revelan la continuidad submarina de los sedimentos arenosos que constituyen la roca de playa. Aquí, se observa una configuración sismoestratigráfica progradante apoyada sobre materiales de edad pleistocena. La grava de cuarcita en la beachrock señala el aporte de un antiguo curso del río Napostá Chico, el cual durante la transgresión holocena habría sufrido retracción de su nivel de base, disminución de volumen y pérdida de competencia. The Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) has a morphological configuration resulting from hydrological and sedimentary processes related to Late Quaternary sea level changes. This estuarine system occupies a large coastal plain with a dense net of tidal channels, low-altitude islands and large intertidal flats. Little is known about the sedimentary units of the marine subbottom. Therefore, a stratigraphical analysis of the northern coast of Bahía Blanca estuary was carried out using high resolution seismic (3.5 kHz) in order to: i) define Quaternary sequences, ii) describe sedimentary structures, and iii) determine the paleoenvironmental conditions of sedimentation. The seismic stratigraphic data collected and their correlation with drilling lithological data show five seismic sequences (S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5), of which S1-S2 were found to be associated with a continental paleoenvironment of Miocene-Pleistocene age. El estuario de Bahía Blanca constituye un espacio de conflictividad política en torno al uso y acceso al ambiente marítimo-costero. Desde que la zona se declarara reserva natural provincial y se conformara el Consorcio de Gestión de Puertos de Bahía Blanca; se ha generado paulatinamente una serie de acciones políticas que han llevado a la alienación de los espacios marítimo-costeros de la esfera pública y en favor de capitales privados. Dichos procesos no han integrado a la sociedad civil, por lo que varios sectores se han movilizado demandando participación en la toma de decisiones respecto de la gobernanza de este espacio. Esta presentación dará cuenta de tales procesos a fin de problematizar la noción de maritimidad en contexto de alteridad y disputa política. This study assessed the effect of tourism and other recreational activities on microplastics (MPs) levels and their characteristics in the sand and the surf zone of the seawater. Six sites belonging to 3 sandy beaches with similar geomorphologic and morphodynamic characteristics but with different tourism activities were chosen. On average, a concentration of 1133.3 ± 811.3 items/kg dry wet (d.w.) and 12.7 ± 14.9 items/m3 were found for sand and seawater samples, respectively. Fibers and films predominated and were less than 1 mm in length. In the sand, films matched mainly with the PE polymer spectra and the fibers with PET polymer, cotton, and indigo blue dye; in the seawater samples, PP films and PET fibers prevailed. In the Coastal Marine MPA Pehuén Co-Monte Hermoso where the flow of tourists is low, MPs levels were the lowest and particles were the largest found, mainly blue or black fibers, and with less polymer diversity, being cotton and PET the most prevalent suggesting a recent input of textile fibers to this site. Besides, in the southern site of a beach considered more pristine due to the negligible human activity, the highest concentration of MPs was found, including the smallest size pattern, mostly composed of white films or fibers with a greater diversity of polymers, prevailing PE > PET > PP. A great occurrence of PVC white films was also found in the surf zone of this site. Proximity to the mouth of a river, coastal drift, and other point sources were pointed as the main sources, indicating that apart from tourism and recreational activities, other sources might play a major role in the input of MPs to sandy beaches.

La posibilidad de iniciar actividades turísticas activa complejos procesos de patrimonialización como los que se observan en contextos microsociales como la localidad de Cabildo, Buenos Aires, Argentina. El trabajo se inició en el año 2012 con el objetivo de diagramar un circuito turístico cultural comunitario. Para esto se investigaron las representaciones sobre el patrimonio y el paisaje cultural mediante una investigación de acción participativa. Los resultados indicaron referencias identitarias disímiles entre los tres grupos de edad seleccionados (adultos mayores, adultos, adolescentes) y las perspectivas del patrimonio y del paisaje cultural particulares para cada sector, información que favoreció el diseño de un circuito turístico integrador. Esta experiencia participativa permitió orientar la intervención de instituciones estatales en la promoción y articulación de las propuestas comunitarias y reflexionar sobre estos ejes: ¿es posible construir un patrimonio intergeneracional a partir del turismo cultural? ¿de qué forma trabajan y qué papel cumplen los organismos públicos?

The aim of this report is to clarify the taxonomical identity of the species of Eurytemora (Copepoda, Calanoida) present in the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina. Observations of taxonomical details were performed and the results led us to conclude that this species is Eurytemora americana Williams, 1906 and not Eurytemora affinis (Poppe, 1880), as previously identified. E. americana is a recent invader in this estuary and could have been accidentally introduced with ballast water of ships.

The present work reports the finding of an exotic bivalve, Barnea (Anchomasa) truncata, in the intertidal zone of the Bahía Blanca Estuary Argentina (38º Lat S), more than 2000 km south from the edge of its native range in South America (21º Lat S, Brazil). Lines of evidence suggest that larval transport by shipping is the probable entry route of this species. The most apparent modification created by the introduction of this species is the generation of greater complexity and habitat heterogeneity in the mud tidal plain of the estuary; the consequent effects on the local biota should therefore be evaluated.

El presente trabajo analiza la influencia de un proyecto tentativo de dragado (“Proyecto para la Extension del Canal de Acceso hasta el Puerto Cuatreros”) y la instalacion de una nueva Planta Regasificadora en la zona industrial de Bahia Blanca sobre el surgimiento de accion colectiva y reglas de auto organizacion para la actividad pesquera artesanal. El analisis es de tipo cualitativo, llevado a cabo mediante metodologias de Investigacion de Accion Participativa y Grupos Focales. Se concluye que existe una incipiente auto organizacion social surgida a partir de la identificacion de objetivos comunes, la cual es una condicion necesaria para la preservacion y sustentabilidad del sistema socio-ecologico bajo estudio.

Se analizó la tendencia y comportamiento de la temperatura en una planicie de marea del estuario de Bahía Blanca (Argentina) para el período 2000-2007. Mediante termistores se registró la temperatura del aire, agua y sedimento cada 10 minutos. Se observó una tendencia de aumento en las temperaturas mínimas, con valores de 0,8ºC/año en la temperatura mínima (absoluta) invernal del agua y 0,7ºC/año en la temperatura mínima (media) de primavera del aire. Las máximas medias estivales del aire y del sedimento mostraron una tendencia negativa, con un descenso de 0,5ºC/año. El análisis espectral de las temperaturas en el estuario presentó evidencias de periodicidad interanual (2 – 6 años) en el aire, agua y sedimento, mostrando un patrón de variabilidad estrechamente relacionado con las periodicidades típicas del fenómeno ENOS (2 – 7 años). La creación de la Sociedad Argentina de Artistas Plásticos y la Asociación Artistas del Sur significó la puesta en marcha de prácticas individuales y colectivas de relación con el espacio que permitieron, desde fines de los años 30, que la representación centralista de Bahía Blanca como “capital de la Patagonia” se recuperara y ganara publicidad. Reconstruir esas iniciativas e interpretarlas como hechos simbólicos e instancias de sociabilidad permite reinsertarlas en un proceso histórico amplio en el que se debatía la configuración de la agenda pública -incluyendo la provincialización de los Territorios Nacionales y la articulación socioeconómica regional- tanto como la definición de un campo autónomo para la cultura. La producción de paisajes y el desarrollo de formas de circulación por el territorio se analizan en tanto operaron con eficacia en el esbozo de un sentido territorial que naturalizaba un vínculo construido sobre la base de intereses sectoriales concretos.

En este trabajo analizamos la forma en que se fue graficando la provincia de Río Negro en Argentina, desde su formación, en 1958, hasta el golpe de Estado de 1976. Contextualizaremos los esquemas territoriales y mapas de la provincia en los modos precedentes de graficar el territorio patagónico, indagando en las diversas tensiones y dinámicas que incidieron en su formación como provincia y las rupturas y continuidades presentes en el modo de caracterizar el espacio. Estos elementos nos permitirán evidenciar el carácter coyuntural de las representaciones gráficas del territorio. Resumen. El diseño de un modelo de desarrollo económico se realiza por múltiples agencias, que adoptan distintas herramientas de representación gráfica, como cartografías, fotografías o esquemas. Esta representación es una herramienta performativa, en tanto propone un hacer a partir de esa síntesis visual. En el presente trabajo cruzamos sentidos del poblamiento y representación de la producción rural de la provincia de Río Negro, Patagonia argentina, en una de las actividades históricamente subalternizada, la producción de pequeña escala de la Agricultura Familiar en las áreas de secano. Esta producción en los últimos años ha tenido un fuerte reconocimiento por parte del Estado Nacional. Revisaremos la representación cartográfica presente en planificaciones estatales de la última década (2006-2015) que buscó generar alternativas al proceso de despoblamiento patagónico y envejecimiento poblacional. Observaremos la forma en que la síntesis visual oculta los sesgos de la mirada desde la cual se elabora.

Chitin is one of the most abundant biopolymers in the planet. Chitin was quantified in seston fractions in order to obtain the first characterization of this polymer in the Bahía Blanca Estuary. Sampling was conducted at two sites: a non- impacted tidal channel -Bahía del Medio (BM)- and a sewage discharge sector -Canal Vieja (CV)-, during winter and summer. The highest values of chitin were observed in the seston fraction <20 µm (6.1 mg L-1 in BM in summer). The remaining larger fractions (20-60, 60-200, 200-500 and >500 µm) did not exceed ~1% of total chitin.. The higher concentration of chitin in seston <20 µm suggests that this fraction is a large reservoir of this biopolymer contributing to organic matter for microorganisms in the food web of the Bahía Blanca Estuary. This study is also the first report on the possible sources of chitin in Argentina marine ecosystems.

We examined the extent to which supply‐side, niche, and competition theories and concepts help explain a trematode community in which one species comprises 87% of the trematode individuals, and the remaining 15 species each have <3%. We collected and dissected the common and wide‐ranging snail host Heleobia australis over four seasons from three distinct habitats from the intertidal area of the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina. Inside a snail, trematodes interact with each other with outcomes that depend on facilitation, competition, and preemption, suggesting that dominant species should be common. The present work reports the finding of an exotic bivalve, Barnea (Anchomasa) truncata, in the intertidal zone of the Bahía Blanca Estuary Argentina (38º Lat S), more than 2000 km south from the edge of its native range in South America (21º Lat S, Brazil). Lines of evidence suggest that larval transport by shipping is the probable entry route of this species. The most apparent modification created by the introduction of this species is the generation of greater complexity and habitat heterogeneity in the mud tidal plain of the estuary; the consequent effects on the local biota should therefore be evaluated.

Los sedimentos estuarinos juegan un rol primordial en los procesos de remineralización de los nutrientes; entre ellos, el fósforo (P) que es un elemento esencial para la vida. En este trabajo, se evaluaron los niveles de P en sedimentos de la capa superficial (S: 0-5mm profundidad) y sub-superficial (SS: 5–10mm profundidad) de la planicie de marea supramareal baja de Puerto Rosales (zona media del estuario de Bahía Blanca, Argentina). A su vez, se presentan los primeros estudios de especiación de P. Se determinó la composición granulométrica, el porcentaje de humedad y de materia orgánica, pH, Eh y la temperatura en los sedimentos con el fin de evaluar su relación con las distintas fracciones de P analizadas. De los encuestados, 98% realizó alguna actividad cultural, sin embargo, la distribución geográfica y etaria de la demanda local de bienes culturales es desigual. Se recomienda orientar a la política económica-cultural a desarrollar mecanismos de acceso a la cultura generalizados y focalizados en los jóvenes.

Biomass dynamics, decomposition and nutrient cycling were studied in a Sarcocornia perennis salt marsh in the Bahia Blanca estuary (Argentina) to achieve a better understanding of these processes and provide information about a species and a region underrepresented in the literature. Above and belowground biomass stocks and carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentration in plant tissues were monitored every 2 months during a year. The decomposition rate and the concentration of C, N and P during the process were also estimated in above and belowground tissues. Biomass values were low (mean of 363 ± 43 and 242 ± 27 g m-2 for aboveground and belowground tissues, respectively), presumably associated with the high salinity of this estuary. The general trend of higher values for aboveground biomass is in agreement with other reports for this species and has an effect on nutrients pools, which are higher for aboveground tissues for C and N. Above and belowground decomposition rates were high (64 and 70% after a year, respectively), meaning this process plays a significant role in the cycling of organic matter. C/N and C/P ratios changed during decomposition, but final ratios were usually higher, suggesting a net release of nutrients. Our results indicate that significant amounts of C, N and P are recycled by S. perennis, highlighting the role of this species and suggesting important consequences of its lost in the study area.

The Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) has a morphological configuration resulting from hydrological and sedimentary processes related to Late Quaternary sea level changes. This estuarine system occupies a large coastal plain with a dense net of tidal channels, low-altitude islands and large intertidal flats. Little is known about the sedimentary units of the marine subbottom. Therefore, a stratigraphical analysis of the northern coast of Bahía Blanca estuary was carried out using high resolution seismic (3.5 kHz) in order to: i) define Quaternary sequences, ii) describe sedimentary structures, and iii) determine the paleoenvironmental conditions of sedimentation. The seismic stratigraphic data collected and their correlation with drilling lithological data show five seismic sequences (S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5), of which S1-S2 were found to be associated with a continental paleoenvironment of Miocene-Pleistocene age. Chitin is one of the most abundant biopolymers in the planet. Chitin was quantified in seston fractions in order to obtain the first characterization of this polymer in the Bahía Blanca Estuary. Sampling was conducted at two sites: a non- impacted tidal channel -Bahía del Medio (BM)- and a sewage discharge sector -Canal Vieja (CV)-, during winter and summer. The highest values of chitin were observed in the seston fraction <20 µm (6.1 mg L-1 in BM in summer). The remaining larger fractions (20-60, 60-200, 200-500 and >500 µm) did not exceed ~1% of total chitin.. The higher concentration of chitin in seston <20 µm suggests that this fraction is a large reservoir of this biopolymer contributing to organic matter for microorganisms in the food web of the Bahía Blanca Estuary. This study is also the first report on the possible sources of chitin in Argentina marine ecosystems.

Among the predators, fish are prevalent in intertidal soft-bottom zones, and many create substantial interruptions in the sediment surface through their feeding, thus affecting the movement of fluids in the sediment-water interface and therefore the rates of deposition and local erosion. This study was designed to determine whether or not Micropogonias furnieri-an ecologically significant benthophagic southwestern Atlantic Ocean predator-modified erosion and/or sedimentation processes in salt marshes. The results indicated that this species exhibited a preference for areas without vegetation cover at the time of feeding since a greater abundance of pits was found in those environments. Moreover, the volume analysis of the pits in the two areas indicated that the size of the fish that had foraged in the sediment was significantly larger in the nonvegetated areas. The results of the M. furnieri-exclusion experiment indicated that the presence of this sciaenid neither resulted in a decrease in benthic organisms in the nonvegetated areas nor affected the vertical distribution of the infauna. When M. furnieri was excluded, the sediment exhibited higher critical-shearing and frictional-velocity values than in areas where M. furnieri had access and therefore was less likely to be eroded. The data from these experiments enabled us to conclude that the foraging action of M. furnieri modified the stability of the sediment as a result of the predatory pressure that the fish exerted on the organisms inhabiting the salt marshes, thus resulting in the generation of elliptical depressions. That modification of the sediment stability was evidenced in two principal ways: (i) a negative effect on the microphytobenthic organisms that decreased the concentration of extracellular polymeric substances in the sediment and (ii) an increased roughness of the bottom and increased percentage of sand in the particle composition of the sediment, where the fish had foraged.

La Colonia de Santa Anita se encuentra ubicada en el Departamento de Uruguay, provincia de Entre Ríos, a 360 km. de la Capital Federal y 220 km. de Paraná (capital de la provincia). La historia territorial de esta localidad está íntimamente vinculada a la inmigración de alemanes del Volga que fundaron la colonia agrícola hacia 1901. En la actualidad, a las clásicas e históricas actividades agrícolas se está sumando el turismo como una actividad en crecimiento a partir de la puesta en valor de atractivos naturales y culturales. En este sentido, el artículo se propone indagar los vínculos entre turismo, patrimonio y lugar en torno a esta localidad rural de la provincia de Entre Ríos (Argentina) poniendo sobre la mesa la discusión geográfica al respecto de las prácticas turísticas del (y en el) lugar.

Microplastics-MPs-(plastic < 5 mm) have become one of the leading environmental problems due to the large amount released into aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and their possible impacts on organisms and human health. Estuaries are positioned as sinks of MPs, due to the presence of natural and industrial effluents. In Argentina, the Bahía Blanca estuary-BBe-is the second largest estuary in the country and is highly anthropized since it has one of the largest deep ports, the largest petrochemical complex, and urban settlements with untreated sewage waters. The oyster C. gigas is widely used as MPs biomonitoring and is commonly distributed in BBe. This study assesses the concentrations of MPs in surface water and in whole tissue of oysters C. gigas, from the BBe. Two sites of the estuary were sampled, one in the inner zone and the other in the middle area. MPs ranged from 6 to 50 items L-1 in water and from 0 to 2ítems g-1 ww in oyster tissue. There were no significant differences between the water samples and oysters (p > α = 0.25) according to the different sites. Fibers were the most abundant MPs in water and oyster samples, with 78% and 95%, respectively. The color was mainly transparent, followed by blue and black. Regarding the size in water, the MPs < 0.5 mm represented 50%, followed by particles between 1 and 5 mm with 36%. In oysters, MPs between 1 and 5 mm were 48%. Many fibers could originate from the mechanical degradation of clothing textiles and hygiene products that enter the aquatic environment through sewage. Due to the ubiquitous nature of MPs in the environment and their different effects on organisms, studies of this kind represent the basis for implementing sustained monitoring of MPs in water, sediments, and biota.
