The current study sought to investigate the factors which influence the quality of decision-making using
business intelligence (BI) in a metal rolling plant in KwaZulu-Natal. Specifically, the study was focused on information
quality, system quality and BI service quality. The study used a self-administered survey sent out to participants having
sufficient report runs which made up the population of the study. The collected data came from different levels of
employees, namely; managers (47%) and non-managers (53%) with varying levels of BI experience, and the data was
imported into SPSS for analysis. The results showed that information quality had a positive significant impact on the
quality of decision-making; system quality had a positive significant impact on the quality of decision-making; and BI
service quality had a positive significant impact on the quality of decision-making. Multiple linear regression analysis was
conducted to determine the strength of these variances in influencing decision-making. It was found that the three
variables explained 65.7% of the variance in the quality of decision-making. Overall, the study found that high quality
information, coupled with a high-quality system and good BI service, leads to a higher quality of decision-making, and
that the impact of BI on decision-making is positive. The study recommends that the company implement data quality

Currency counterfeiting is a serious matter of concern for government and national finance organizations. The policy makers have formed a zero tolerance policy for counterfeiting, but still the incidence of counterfeit notes is becoming an alarming situation. The counterfeited banknotes reduce the value of real money and an increase in the money supply is not just a solution, because it leads to inflation. Counterfeiting poses tangible as well as intangible impacts and affects business organizations and thereby a nation's economy. Therefore, the research study aims to identify the factors that affects the counterfeiting in Indian banknotes. Questionnaire as a data collection instrument was used to collect data from the north-west region of Delhi. The factors were then identified through exploratory factor analysis and standardized using a confirmatory factor analysis. At last, the relative effect of each factor was measured using multiple regression analysis as a part of confirm...

This study investigates how managerial decision-making is influenced by Big Data analytics, analysts’ interaction skills and quantitative skills of senior and middle managers. The results of a cross-sectional survey of senior IT managers reveal that Big Data analytics (BDA) creates an incentive for managers to base more of their decisions on analytic insights. However, we also find that interaction skills of analysts and – even more so – managers’ quantitative skills are stronger drivers of analytics-based decision-making. Finally, our analysis reveals that, contrary to mainstream perceptions, managers in smaller organizations are more capable in terms of quantitative skills, and they are significantly more likely to base their decisions on analytics than managers in large organizations. Considering the important role of managers’ quantitative skills in leveraging analytic decision support, our findings suggest that smaller firms may owe some of their analytic advantages to the fact...

Many Organizations struggle in collecting data, retrieving information and making sound decisions within good time. With a
very high increase in data collection due to the growing global market and customization, the decision making process needs
to be fast and more accurate. The research was conducted at the National Identification Authority which is a Government
Identity Management Institution. A survey method and a Stratified Random Sampling method of data collection were used.
In looking at the possibility to optimize Business performance through Business Intelligence, it was expedient to investigate
the current BI tools used by the organisation under study. Find out the awareness of Business Intelligence to some critical
staff and their perception on the adaptation of a full scale Business Intelligence system by the organisation. It was found out
that the institution does not have a BI system in operation and about half of the respondents interviewed acknowledged the
need of using a Business Intelligence system. They were however concerned about Business Intelligence capital
intensiveness, the need for intelligent planning, highly skilled technocrats to man such a system as the main challenges. In
addressing these concerns some recommendations are outlined which would go a long way in helping the National
Identification Authority.

Business intelligence suppose retrieving value from data floating in the organization environment. It provides methods and tools for collecting, storing, formatting and analyzing data for the purpose of helping managers in decision-making. At the start, only data from enterprise internal activities were examined. Now and in this turbulent business environment, organizations should incorporate analysis of the huge amount of external data gathered from multifarious sources. It is argued that BI systems accuracy depends on quantity of data at their disposal, yet some storage and analysis methods are phased out and should be reviewed by academics and practitioners. This paper presents an overview of BI challenges in the context of Big Data (BD) and some available solutions provided, either by using Cloud Computing (CC) or improving Data Warehouse (DW) efficiency.

We introduce a novel framework for goals-based wealth management (GBWM), where risk is understood as the probability of investors not attaining their goals, not just the standard deviation of investors' portfolios. Our framework is based on a foundation of developments in behavioral economics and finance and is consistent with modern portfolio theory. Using a simple geometric analysis, we determine a specifi c portfolio that matches each individual investor's stated goals. Our approach requires information from the investor about their goals, elicited in a clear manner that market research shows is superior to common current practices. This new approach can improve the communication between advisors and clients and produce better advice for enabling clients to attain their goals with high probability through the use of efficient portfolios.

Knowledge-based decision support systems (KB-DSS) recommend decision actions based on stored knowledge. One of the challenges in time-critical clinical KB-DSS is the ability to maintain and continually improve the underlying knowledge-base. This challenge stems from the dynamic nature of the knowledge, and from the time constraints associated with the time critical interventions which do not afford for a traditional knowledge engineering approaches to feasibly occur during actual system usage. This paper explores the proposition that a usage-driven design approach could act as an enabler for the continual improvement of time critical, real-time KB DSS. We will describe a case study of an existing trauma reception and resuscitation time-critical real-time decision support system to express the challenges found in the current implementation and define the information requirements for supporting the proposed approach using a design-science-research methodology.

The system will detect faults in the street lights to intimate the control room to take immediate action. This application will have the following features viz. automatic circuit fault detection, pole inclination detection, and light sensing. This project aims for designing and executing the advanced development in embedded systems for energy saving of street lights. Currently, we have a manual system where the street lights will be switched ON in the evening before the sunsets and they are switched OFF in the next day morning after there is sufficient light on the outside[1]. But the actual timing for these lights to be switched ON is when there is absolute darkness. With this, the power will be wasted up to some extent. This project gives a solution for electrical power wastage.[2]

This paper extends research on the relationship between quality management and sustainable operations initiatives. A functional quality system is widely regarded as a prerequisite for effective environmental management, but research on the interplay of specific quality management and sustainability techniques is scarce. This paper examines the relationships of design for environment (DFE) and quality management innovation (QMI) to environmental and economic performance. Quality management innovation is defined as those elements of TQM that specifically support or enhance innovation in products and processes. We examine these relationships with survey data from 492 manufacturing practitioners across a variety of industries. The results suggest a significant positive relationship between DFE and environmental performance, and find that this effect is significantly and positively mediated by quality management innovation. This study contributes to quality and sustainability literature while offering useful insight to practitioners.

Business Analytics (BA) has become an important source of competitive advantage for small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the modern era of electronic commerce and commercial globalization. The application of BA is particularly widespread in the developed countries. However, in the developing world, such as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the uptake of BA is less impressive due to many factors including lack of finances. This study sought to establish the status of BA adoption among SMEs in the MENA region, the factors influencing their adoption, the role of business size in adoption decision, and the future of BA for SMEs in the MENA region. The study established that the size of a business plays a major role in BA adoption decisions due to size-related factors, such as ability to access finances and management structure. The study also established that while most of medium-sized enterprises in the MENA region have adopted BA tools, most of small-sized enterprises are yet to do so. Consequently, the future of BA for SMEs in this region is dependent on whether SMEs, particularly small-sized enterprises can obtain better access to credit. Government policies to enhance this access as well as to enhance awareness among the SMEs about the importance of BA will also play an essential role in determining the future of BA among SMEs in this region.

In almost every type of business a retention stage is very important in the customer life cycle because according to market theory, it is always expensive to attract new customers than retaining existing ones. Thus, a churn prediction system that can predict accurately ahead of time, whether a customer will churn in the foreseeable future and also help the enterprises with the possible reasons which may cause a customer to churn is an extremely powerful tool for any marketing team. In this paper, we propose an approach to predict customer churn for non-subscription based business settings. We suggest a set of generic features that can be extracted from sales and payment data of almost all non-subscription based businesses and can be used in predicting customer churn. We have used the neural network-based Multilayer perceptron for prediction purposes. The proposed method achieves an F1-Score of 80% and a recall of 85%, comparable to the accuracy of churn prediction for subscription-based business settings. We also propose a system for causality analysis of churn, which will predict a set of causes which may have led to the customer churn and helps to derive customer retention strategies.
