This research into the concept of support was undertaken because of the recurrent use of the concept in nursing research and especially because of the vital importance of support to family carers of older persons. To inductively develop a definition of support, specifically in the context of family care of frail aged persons. The study followed the evolutionary method of concept analysis. The study was based on data from scientific publications, encyclopaedias and dictionaries. In order to secure a representative sample, highly systematic means of sampling were used. Working with the data underpinning this study, it was possible to put forward a definition of support for family carers who care for a frail aged person at home. The two major dimensions, as described under attributes, were merged into the following definition: "Support entails the provision of general tangibles such as information, education, economic aid, goods and external services. They are prerequisites for fa...

Objective Thirst (Attash) is a diagnostic sign of diseases from the perspective of Iranian Traditional Medicine
(ITM).The purpose of this study is to provide a functional definition for the concept of thirst and its
causes in ITM.
Methods In this study, we used the concept analysis (hybrid model) which has three phases; in the theoretical
phase, the content related to the definition of thirst and its causes were searched in ITM books and
an efficient definition of thirst was presented. In the fieldwork phase, main themes were obtained after
semi-structured interviewing of 16 ITM specialists. In the final (analytical) phase, the results of the two
previous phases were compared to each other to present the final definition for thirst.
Results The thirst is defined as the need for water and any food that is cold and wet, and the increase and
decrease in thirst is a sign of disease. For its examination, it is necessary to pay attention to the change in
the degree of thirst and the amount of consumed water or cold/wet foods. It is important to differentiate
between drinking water as recommended, drinking water as habit, or drinking water because of dry
mouth with thirst. Different characteristics of thirst can be used to diagnose the affected organs.
Conclusion In this study, using the concept analysis method, a functional definition of the thirst as a
symptom was presented and its causes were investigated. The low number of studies on thirst and lack
of access to some ITM specialists were some of the limitations of our study. It is recommended to investigate
the prevalence of thirst in patients and its relationship with dystemperament in future studies.

We researchers say that we study early childhood education. What do we actually study? Hereby I now focus on the concept of early childhood education. Concept analysis produces new information on the phenomenon that we the researchers of early childhood education and lecturers love so much. But what do we actually love? In this article I will analyze the concept of early childhood education and propose a new systems theory based definition of early childhood education. For reference I will use a few Finnish early childhood education textbooks and articles with different definitions of the concept of early childhood education. The authors are Finnish early childhood education experts. Their views are based on the international theoretical cornerstones. This article is based on my scientific research (Härkönen, 2002a). Methodologically I have advanced by presenting exact quotations from their texts and have processed their early childhood education concepts into models (Checkland, 198...

The aim of this concept analysis paper was to critically analyze the practice inquiry competency of nurse practitioners as a concept using the Wilsonian approach. The novelty of practice inquiry competency, one of the entry level nurse practitioner’s core competencies, is nascent. The Wilsonian approach of concept analysis provided the framework. Web searches using Google Scholar and databases from PubMed, CINAHL ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Medline provided related literature from 1963−2013 to capture the evolution of the Wilsonian approach to concept analysis. The sample cases of the Wilsonian concept analysis process validated that the impetus of practice inquiry competency is greater when used in collaboration with healthcare professionals. The paucity of scholarly works on practice inquiry as a novel competency of nurse practitioners makes this an opportune time for both nurse researchers and doctoral students in nursing to develop and analyze concepts toward building a stro...

The present study was conducted with the aim of clarifying and reducing the semantic ambiguities around the concept of professionalism. The concept analysis method of Walker and Avant was used. The analysis demonstrated that professionalism in nursing consists of three main pillars: principles of care, communication, and ethics. Given that the process of professionalism in nursing may have positive outcomes for the nurse, the nursing profession, and the health system of the community, these items have been attended to. The present concept analysis can open the way to conducting more extensive research and devising tools to identify the barriers, facilitators, and administrative arrangements by clarifying the concept.

The aim of this article was to analyze the concept of caregiver stress in the context of caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Currently, there are more than 15 million unpaid caregivers for persons suffering from Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This unpaid care can be stressful for caregivers due to the chronic nature of the disease process, as well as other factors. The paper incorporates the modified method of Wilson's concept analysis procedure to analyze the concept of caregiver stress. A review of the literature was undertaken using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Google Scholar, and PubMed. A theoretical definition of caregiver stress is provided, and the defining attributes, related concepts, antecedents, and consequences of caregiver stress are proposed, and case studies are presented. The analysis demonstrates that caregiver stress is the unequal exchange of assistance among people who stand in close relationship to one another, which results in emotional and physical stress on the caregiver. Implications for future nursing research and practice conclude the paper.
