Through evidence based practice implementation, autonomous practice and innovation strategies can stimulate workplace empowerment, providing a framework for retention and recruitment within rural healthcare organizations. This pilot study determined the relationships that exist between evidence based practice use and workplace empowerment among rural Registered Nurses. Forty-two rural Registered Nurses completed an online survey examining their level of evidence based practice use and workplace empowerment. A Spearman's rho found a strong, positive correlation between overall evidence based practice use and workplace empowerment (r = 0.648, p< .001). Through regression analysis, educational background was determined to be a confounding variable for overall evidence based practice utilization and perceived level of workplace empowerment. While the resultant small sample size negates generalization of this pilot study to a larger population, the results uphold the premise that organizational support of innovation, as evident within the tenets of evidence based practice, can potentially impact nurses' sense of empowerment in the workplace. The results are valuable to healthcare administrators, quality and risk professionals, professional development educators, and direct care nurses when determining the needs of RNs for evidence based practice education, mentorship, and advancement of organizational empowerment structures. Future studies should examine rural Registered Nurses' workplace empowerment levels as a source of innovation, which can be a direct result of evidence based practice utilization. Evidence based practice, in conjunction with similar empowering work structures, can enhance rural nurses' ability to implement highly reliable, quality healthcare services in an environment conducive to learning, autonomy, productivity, and innovation.

AimsTo conduct a concept analysis of clinical practice contexts (work environments) in health care.BackgroundContext is increasingly recognized as important to the development, delivery, and understanding of implementation strategies; however, conceptual clarity about what comprises context is lacking.DesignModified Walker and Avant concept analysis comprised of five steps: (1) concept selection; (2) determination of aims; (3) identification of uses of context; (4) determination of its defining attributes; and (5) definition of its empirical referents.MethodsA wide range of databases were systematically searched from inception to August 2014. Empirical articles were included if a definition and/or attributes of context were reported. Theoretical articles were included if they reported a model, theory, or framework of context or where context was a component. Double independent screening and data extraction were conducted. Analysis was iterative, involving organizing and reorganizing...

AimTo conduct a concept analysis of clinical practice contexts (work environments) that facilitate or militate against the uptake of research evidence by healthcare professionals in clinical practice. This will involve developing a clear definition of context by describing its features, domains and defining characteristics.BackgroundThe context where clinical care is delivered influences that care. While research shows that context is important to knowledge translation (implementation), we lack conceptual clarity on what is context, which contextual factors probably modify the effect of knowledge translation interventions (and hence should be considered when designing interventions) and which contextual factors themselves could be targeted as part of a knowledge translation intervention (context modification).DesignConcept analysis.MethodsThe Walker and Avant concept analysis method, comprised of eight systematic steps, will be used: (1) concept selection; (2) determination of aims;...

There are longstanding and growing concerns about the demanding nature of work environments that affect nurses' health, job satisfaction and provision of quality care. Specifically in healthcare settings, there is the need for leaders to create supportive work environments to avert these negative trends and increase nurse job satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of managers' resonant leadership and nurses' structural empowerment on their job satisfaction. A secondary analysis of data collected from a non-experimental survey design using a sample of 1216 registered nurses from nine provinces in Canada was conducted. Structural empowerment partially mediated the relationship between resonant leadership and job satisfaction. In addition, resonant leadership and structural empowerment explained a total of 32% whilst controlling for age, education and work setting of the variance in job satisfaction (F (5, 1169) =131.78, p<.001, R 2 =0.36). The findings of this study suggested that resonant leaders are instrumental in creating structurally empowering environments that contribute to nurse job satisfaction. Therefore, a focus on developing resonant leadership skills among nurse leaders in healthcare organizations will advance the creation of healthy work environments that promote job satisfaction and retention of nurses.

Background: Academic bullying is a global and growing phenomenon in educational settings. Yet, there is a lack of consensus concerning the definitions of academic bullying which challenges researchers. The purpose of this analysis, therefore, was to conceptualize the concept of academic bullying, including its definitions, defining characteristics, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents. Objectives: The purpose of this analysis, therefore, was to conceptualize the concept of academic bullying, including its definitions, defining characteristics, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents. Methods: Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis was employed to identify the antecedents, attributes, and consequences of academic bullying. A review of existing literature on academic bullying was conducted using the electronic databases of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and ProQuest, searched with the phrase of "academic bullying" in the titles of documents without a time limit. The search included all document types (article, review, editorial, letter, note, book, book chapter and dissertation) related to academic bullying published in English. Results: In reviewing the studies, 37 documents were identified to provide information for this concept analysis. Based on the analysis undertaken, a working definition and defining attributes were formulated, along with a discussion of various model cases, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents regarding academic bullying. Conclusion: Educational leaders can prevent or reduce faculty bullying by raising awareness, offering training, and establishing guidelines. The identification of academic bullying attributes contributes to the body of knowledge of academic bullying, reduces the ambiguity of this concept, and provides a working definition of academic bullying. Defining attributes, antecedents, and consequences can be further tested and used to develop potential interventions. Future research is needed to advance our understanding of this concept and explore interventions that could diminish its negative consequences.

Ours is a precious human life. It is so because we are gifted with capacities and possibilities unknown to any other species. Through our own efforts we can gain freedom from suffering and achieve a sustained wholeness, peace, love and joy that surpasses the understanding of an ordinary consciousness. With this achievement all effortS at healing come to an end as we have reached the quintessence of human life-a health and life divine of body, mind and spirit. Bur for this level of healing we must look beyond our remedies and therapies ro the second grear force of healing, the inner force, that can only be activated and mastered through a progressive expansion of consciousness. This is what the ancient healing traditions have always whispered to us if we would but listen. Their healing elixir is simple: larger consciousness, larger health, larger life. As individuals and practitioners, our personal healing, as well as our capacity ro assist others in thei[ own healing, is especially dependent upon our abiliry to access higher levels of consciousness and their naturally emergent qualities of wisdom, wholeness, peace, love and compassion. A vertical leap in consciousness, we discover, is both the ground of our being and the ground of our healing. To arrain such an uncommon health and life requires that we invest in the development of our inner life, our consciousness. Utilizing rhe many traditional contem• plative, meditative and other paths that have been left to us by the great sages we can each tap into this singular essence of all healing practices. It is an essence that transcends yet simulta neously infuses all of our manifold metbods with an expansive consciousness that is the great elixir and essence of all healing and simultaneously the source of a remarkable human f1ourishing-a completion and perfection of our humanity that is unknown ro ordinary awareness.

This study analyzes 101 master's and doctoral theses published between 2016 and 2024 in the ProQuest database, examining how Putnam's concept of bonding social capital is conceptualized and linked to criminal behavior within criminology literature. Using a Python-supported automated qualitative method, the research integrates thematic content analysis, frequency analysis, and contextual coding. Findings reveal a nuanced, dual impact of bonding social capital: while strong in-group ties can promote pro-social norms and reduce delinquency at the micro level, they may also foster deviant subcultures and facilitate organized crime. The study highlights how the effects of social capital vary across settings and scales, offering key insights into its ambivalent role in the context of crime.

The insurance industry is increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainability and green marketing practices, particularly in the context of digital branding. This literature review examines sustainability and green marketing strategies in the general insurance industry, with a focus on the importance of green digital branding. Sustainability in insurance encompasses business practices that consider financial factors and environmental, social, and governance impacts. We analyzed relevant papers published between 2018 and 2025 from major academic databases. Through a literature review employing a Narrative Literature Review approach, this article identifies key trends in green marketing practices and the challenges they present, including issues related to greenwashing and regulatory limitations. The findings suggest that digitalization and adopting paperless policies offer significant opportunities for efficiency and transparency. Additionally, transparent communication strategies and collaboration with environmental influencers are crucial for building consumer trust and supporting sustainability initiatives within the insurance industry. This literature review offers valuable insights for stakeholders to develop more sustainable marketing strategies. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how insurance companies can implement sustainability practices. It helps companies understand the relevance of sustainability in an industry that is increasingly under pressure to be socially and environmentally responsible. Although the literature reports trends and challenges in implementing green marketing, there remains a lack of empirical research exploring the impact of such strategies on consumer behavior and the performance of insurance companies

(DIPF/Orig.)

Content-Based Image Retrieval Systems are now commonly used as a ltering mechanism against the piracy of multimedia contents. Many publications in the last few years have proposed very robust schemes where pirated contents are detected despite severe modications. But none of these systems have addressed the piracy problem from a security perspective. It is now time to check whether they are secure: Can pirates mount violent attacks against CBIRS by carefully studying the technology they use? This paper analyzes the security aws of the typical technology blocks used in state-of-the-art CBIRS and shows it is possible to delude systems, making them useless in practice.

Aim: To examine the current state of empowerment of nurses in Italy. Background: Empowerment is a broad concept that is also relevant to the field of nursing practice. Its comprehension and use are important because empowerment allows nurses to take control of their own practice. A clear understanding of empowerment is necessary for nurses to take advantage of this important tool. Design: Focus groups were conducted. Methods: A literature review was performed, and two focus groups were selected between January and February 2014. Results: Sixteen nurses participated in the research. Empowerment is seen as being strongly connected to autonomy and is not associated with power, as the word itself suggests. Italian nurses define empowerment as the creation of conditions that help to establish the possibility for people to develop and express their value and potential. Empowerment is defined as a condition in which the individual nurse takes control of his/her own practice and thereby provides awareness and confidence to a group.

Background Quality of life (QoL) is a common indicator of outcomes in people living with diabetes, but the concept of diabetes-related QoL (DRQoL) remains unclear. Clarifying core knowledge of DRQoL was the goal of this paper. Methods A concept analysis was conducted according to Walker and Avant's framework. A systematic search of the published literature was conducted between 2002 and 2022 based on resource availability, current relevancy, and the quality of recent studies. Three major databases were used to identify the attributes, antecedents, consequences, and measures for DRQoL. Only articles investigating DRQoL among adult or elderly people living with diabetes that were published in English in peer-reviewed journals were analyzed. Results In total, 4342 articles were screened, and only 401 articles underwent eligibility assessment. A total of 183 articles were included in the analysis. Most (59.78%) of them were observational studies and DRQoL as a primary outcome. We identified four critical components of DRQoL: (a) general health, (b) diabetes-related satisfaction, (c) diabetes impact, and (d) diabetes self-management. The antecedents were classified according to their contributions to DRQoL as follows: 25 positive-induced, 4 neutral-based, and 19 negative-induced antecedents. The consequences of DRQoL were mortality risk, personal health, satisfaction with health care, hospitalization risk, and failure to return to work. The referents varied widely, and 32 tools were found for DRQoL measurement. Furthermore, 12 scales for disease-specific DRQoL and 17 tools for general QoL were identified. Conclusion This paper provides a definition of DRQoL as well as its attributes, antecedents, consequences, and measures in adults with diabetes. The attributes of DRQoL included general health, diabetes-related satisfaction, diabetes impact, and diabetes self-management. A comprehensive understanding of DRQoL can improve the quality of care and can aid in the recognition of the needs of care among people living with diabetes.

This study explored the process of how power is exercised in nurse-manager relationships in the hospital setting, to better understand what fosters and constrains staff nurse empowerment. Semi-structured interviews and participant observations were conducted with 26 participants in a hospital in Western Canada. Seeking connectivity was the basic social process in which nurses strive to connect with their manager to create a workable partnership in the provision of high-quality patient care while responding to the demands of the organizational context. The overarching finding was that the manager plays a critical role in modifying the work environment for nurses and, as such, nurses seek connection with their manager. Findings revealed two patterns within the process of seeking connectivity: (a) in the absence of a meaningful engagement with the manager, power was held over nurses through institutional patterns of behaviour and practices, and nurses employed a variety of resistance strategies; (b) when managers provided guidance and engaged nurses as co-collaborators, power was shared and nurses were able to influence patient outcomes positively. The results of this study support Laschinger's program of research on nurse empowerment from an organizational perspective, and advance nurse empowerment from a critical perspective.

Aims and objectives: This article aims to clarify the concept of ''holism'' in nursing through the use of Rodgers . Concept analysis and the development of nursing knowledge; the evolutionary cycle. Journal of Advanced Nursing 14, 330-335] concept analysis framework. Background: The primary author is employed in a urology department which cares for many clients with end stage cancer. Holistic nursing practice is the philosophy of the unit, however many nurses struggle to articulate what holistic practice actually means to them, hence this analysis was deemed very pertinent to practicing nurses to enable the realization of nurses therapeutic potential when caring for patients in practice. Method: Rodgers (1989) well-established method of concept analysis was employed to facilitate the clarification of the concept of holistic nursing practice. Relevance to clinical practice: The clarification of the concept offered a working definition of holistic nursing practice which practicing nurses can clearly comprehend and avail of when caring for patients of all race, religion and creed in the clinical practice area. Conclusion: By undertaking this methodology of concept analysis the integrity of the concept was kept intact. The factors that influence holistic nursing practice were identified and a model case demonstrated the reality of holistic nursing care for practicing nurses.

This paper presents the development of a speech interface for controlling a high fidelity system from natural language sentences. A Bayesian Belief Network approach is proposed for dialog modeling. This solution is applied to infer the user's goals corresponding to the processed utterances. Subsequently, from the inferred goals, missing or spurious concepts are automatically detected. This is used to drive the dialog prompting for missing concepts and clarifying for spurious concepts allowing more flexible and natural dialogs. A dialog strategy which makes use of the dialog history and the system's state is also presented.

Bayesian Networks, BNs, are suitable for mixed-initiative dialog modeling allowing a more flexible and natural spoken interaction. This solution can be applied to identify the intention of the user considering the concepts extracted from the last utterance and the dialog context. Subsequently, in order to make a correct decision regarding how the dialog should continue, unnecessary, missing, wrong, optional and required concepts have to be detected according to the inferred goals. This information is useful to properly drive the dialog prompting for missing concepts, clarifying for wrong concepts, ignoring unnecessary concepts and retrieving those required and optional. This paper presents a novel BNs approach where a single BN is obtained from N goal-specific BNs through a fusion process. The new fusion BN enables a single concept analysis which is more consistent with the whole dialog context.

An adult continuing education course in introductory Spanish is described. In planning the course, special attention was given to making course objectives realistic for the target population; rather than undertake a traditional college-level syllabus, academic and grammar-oriented in nature, the course was designed to provide students with basic communicative skills in Spanish. Grammar instruction is de-emphasized; for example, only the present tense is employed in the textbook used, and no grammar terminology is taught overtly in class. The functional-notional approach was selected as the most appropriate for adult learners. Some students initially resisted this approach, preferring a traditional grammar-oriented one. The once-l-week, 2-hour class and irregular attendance made classroom continuity difficult, and pronunciation was not easy for the adult students to grasp. However, the older learners' creative abilities and thoughtful approach to language learning were found to be instrumental in their acquisition of language skills and confidence. Suggested adjustments for such a course in future would be incorporation of some traditional grammar exercises in the textbook. (MSE)

This document reports on the study and research on the final year project entitled: Simulation of sorption-enhanced steam reforming of methanol for hydrogen production. The purpose of this simulation project is to study on the effects of different isothermal temperature and different S/M molar feed ratio towards maximizing hydrogen, H 2 and minimizing Carbon monoxide, CO concentration in presence of Carbon dioxide, CO 2 removal reaction. Currently, the steam reforming of methanol produced CO as byproduct. While, presence of CO in reformate gas can be poisonous towards cell electrode of Proton exchange membrane (PEM). Furthermore, high purity of H 2 produced will increase the fuel cell's durability and efficiency. In this study, the adsorption rate of CO 2 has been taken into consideration. Three main reactions is being study under this project together with CO 2 removal reaction mechanism. The Peppley kinetic reaction model has been choose to running this simulation and getting the final results. This project heavily involved in using mathematical software which is MATLAB TM. The results shows that at high temperature and high molar feed rate ratio (S/M) more hydrogen, H 2 is produced and reduction in CO concentration. The presence of CO 2 removal reaction significantly increases the purity of H 2 and reduced the amount of CO the zero level. Therefore, more study is required for better understanding in order to achieve an optimum production of H 2 for PEM reactor.

This study assesses the extent of public goods provision by Brazilian firms and how this behavior has changed over time. We use text data of publicly traded companies’ annual standardized financial declarations from 2010 and 2022 and apply natural language processing techniques to extract ESG (environmental, social, and governance) keywords related to the provision of public goods. Context and sentiment analyses were used to supplement the information extracted from the raw keyword counts; these analyses were conducted using diverse regression techniques. We found a pronounced increase in keyword mentions over time; in particular, “responsibility” and “sustainability” appeared more frequently. Virtually all firms became more dedicated to ESG practices, particularly those that had a low frequency of ESG mentions in a positive context. Overall, it seems
that large Brazilian corporations have embedded comprehensive ESG policies into their business practices, thus aligning their strategies with those of pioneering multinationals.

Kaiser & Nolte 1989, S.16ff.

In this paper, we present an approach to the automatic extraction of conceptual structures from unorganized collections of documents using large scale lexical regularities in text. The technique maps a term to a constellation of other terms that captures the essential meaning of the term in question. The methodology is language independent, it involves an exploration of a document collection in which the initial term occurs (e.g., the collection returned by a search engine when being queried with this term) and the building of a network in which each node is assigned to a term. The weights of the connections between nodes are strengthened each time the terms that these nodes represent appear together in a context of a predefined length. Possible applications are automatic concept map generation, terminology extraction, term retrieval, term translation, term localization, etc. The system is currently under development although preliminary experiments show promising results.

Purpose: This article introduces the importance and nature of the role of the nurse scientist as a knowledge broker. Design: A systematic literature review was completed using a modified version of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) appraisal tool[JC1] to trace the emergence and characteristics of the knowledge broker role across disciplines internationally and in the United States. Methods: Salient publications were identified using PubMed, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Sociological Abstracts, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, as well as hand searches and searches of the grey literature. Authors used these resources to define the knowledge broker role and with their role-related experiences developed the Thompson Knowledge Brokering Model. Findings: A knowledge broker is one who connects science and society by building networks and facilitating opportunities among knowledge producers and knowledge users. The knowledge broker role includes three components: forming and sustaining partnerships; facilitating knowledge application; and creating new knowledge. There are five major strategies central to each role component: establish, engage, educate, empower, and evaluate. Conclusions: The knowledge broker role has been increasingly recognized worldwide as key to translating science into practice and policy. The nurse scientist is ideally suited for this role and should be promoted worldwide. The Thompson Knowledge Brokering Model can be used as a guide for nurse scientists.

The concepts of patient-centeredness and patient empowerment offer opportunities for patients to increase their autonomy and involvement in their care and treatment. However, these concepts appear to be understood in different ways by professional groups involved in healthcare and research. To optimize understanding there is a need to create a common language. To explore and compare the concepts of patient-centeredness and patient empowerment, and clarify a possible relationship between the two from the perspective of the encounter between patients and their healthcare providers. Methods: Concept analysis approach in which the concepts are compared based on literature review. Results: Patient-centeredness can be the goal of an encounter between patient and caregiver. As a process, it is of great value in the process of patient empowerment. Patient empowerment appears to be broader than patient-centeredness, and may place greater demands on caregivers and the organisation of healthcare. Conclusion: Patient-centeredness and patient empowerment are complementary concepts which do not oppose one-another. Patient empowerment can be achieved by patient-centeredness, but patients can also empower themselves. Practice implications: Clarification of patient-centeredness and patient empowerment can facilitate their use by those involved in healthcare, improve the quality of healthcare, and aid future research.

Multiculturalism and changing diversities have become a major norm in the current health sectors hence the need for health care workers to learn and understand how to act when faced with this dynamic. Thus the literature review was conducted to gather and provide information on the impact of nurses' knowledge and skills of multiculturalism in working environment. The aim of the thesis was to gather and provide information on nurses' knowledge and skills on multiculturalism in working environment. It was also aimed at gathering information on whether multicultural collaboration at work places can be used to improve healthcare service delivery. The purpose of the thesis was to provide information on the importance of nurses' knowledge and skills on multiculturalism which can be used to improve health care service delivery and enhance patient satisfaction. A descriptive literature review was used as the research method and content analysis was used for the analysis of the various data collected. Whereby gathered data was categorized in to themes. With thorough reading through the data key information was singled out to answer the research questions. The findings of the thesis indicated that provide safety, integrated health care to patients, culturally competent nursing care is the fundamental skill for all nurses. All nurse should have knowledge on cultural backgrounds of working environment for effective service delivery. Language as part of culture also emerged to be a key requirement for nurses to work effectively in Health care systems and organizations. Nurses should have cross-cultural leadership ability to make policies more especially in a multicultural working environment. The findings of this thesis can be used to improved multicultural collaboration of nurses in their working places.

The lack of a shared, operant definition for greenwashing has led to fragmented scholarly research, unclear guidelines for practice, inconsistent enforcement, and reactive policy frameworks; resulting in ineffective efforts to combat its growth. Using concept analysis, this research establishes a composite definition for greenwashing by identifying the constitutive attributes sourced across 79 scholarly definitions. The analysis finds six requirements necessary for identifying greenwashing: a claim on environmental performance by a private sector organization marketing a product or a service, which cannot be substantiated, made with deceptive intent, and done to establish a
competitive advantage. Fulfilling these criteria warrants an accusation of greenwashing. With the aim to prevent its further spread and misuse, the article provides a diagnostic tool for separating similar but often conflated concepts from greenwashing to organize scholarly research, provide guidelines for practitioners, and support regulators’ case analysis.

Title. A concept analysis of renal supportive care: the changing world of nephrology Aim. This paper is a report of a concept analysis of renal supportive care. Background. Approximately 1AE5 million people worldwide are kept alive by renal dialysis. As services are required to support patients who decide not to start or to withdraw from dialysis, the term renal supportive care is emerging. Being similar to the terms palliative care, end-of-life care, terminal care and conservative management, there is a need for conceptual clarity. Method. Rodgers' evolutionary method was used as the organizing framework for this concept analysis. Data were collected from a review of CINAHL, Medline, PsycINFO, British Nursing Index, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences and ASSIA (1806-2006) using, 'renal' and 'supportive care' as keywords. All articles with an abstract were considered. The World Wide Web was also searched in English utilizing the phrase 'renal supportive care'. Results. Five attributes of renal supportive care were identified: available from diagnosis to death with an emphasis on honesty regarding prognosis and impact of disease; interdisciplinary approach to care; restorative care; family and carer support and effective, lucid communication to ensure informed choice and clear lines of decision-making. Conclusion. Renal supportive care is a dynamic and emerging concept relevant, but not limited to, the end phase of life. It suggests a central philosophy underpinning renal service development that allows patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team time to work together to realize complex goals. It has relevance for the renal community and is likely to be integrated increasingly into everyday nephrology practice.

Exploring old pharmacopoeias is a promising way to find active ingredients that can be useful to design new drugs. Nevertheless, studying these texts is a laborious task for biologists. Therefore, an interdisciplinary project was undertaken: texts have been annotated to extract relevant information and represent it within a graph database. Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) and Relational Concept Analysis (RCA) have then been used to explore this database, in order to answer questions regarding remedies and their ingredients. This paper presents the data and some results obtained with FCA and RCA. It highlights the suitability of these approaches to explore these data and answer the needs of biologists.

Objective: The introduction of the vicarious resilience concept in psychology and mental health nursing literature is a highly promising advancement. By utilizing this novel concept, experts in various domains can enhance their comprehension of how to foster resilience in individuals by observing and learning from the resilience of others. This concept analysis aims to elucidate the concept of vicarious resilience in mental health nursing by defining its related attributes, antecedents, and consequences. Methods: Walker and Avant's strategy for concept analysis method was used. This review specifically examined mental health nurse providers. A comprehensive literature search was performed in the PubMed, Medline, the Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases. The inclusion criterion was Englishlanguage documents on vicarious resilience within mental health nursing. Results: A total of 24 articles were included. The concept's attributes were empathy, hope, resourcefulness, awareness, and spirituality. Antecedents were associated with listening to patients' trauma narratives, self-care, self-awareness, and support from colleagues. Consequences were enhanced well-being, changes in life goals, adaptation, personal growth, and increased personal resilience. Currently, there is only one tool in the empirical reference. Conclusion: Interpreting the concept of vicarious resilience in mental health nursing and determining its characteristics can be utilized to design nursing interventions to develop vicarious resilience and enhance the quality of care in mental health facilities.

This paper proposes to use the formal technique of Concept Analysis to analyse how methods and classes in an object-oriented inheritance hierarchy are coupled by means of the inheritance and interfaces relationships. Especially for large and complex inheritance hierarchies, we believe that a formal analysis of how behaviour is reused can provide insight in how the hierarchy was built and the different relationships among the classes. To perform this analysis, we use behavioural information provided by the self sends and super sends made in each class of the hierarchy. The proposed technique allows us to identify weak spots in the inheritance hierarchy that may be improved, and to serve as guidelines for extending or customising an object-oriented application framework. As a first step, this paper reports on an initial experiment with the Magnitude hierarchy in the Smalltalk programming language.

Within object oriented software, the minimal unit of development and testing is a class. So understanding how a class is defined and behaves is important. Considering that a class is composed of instance variables and methods, the process is not so easy to achieve because we must decide which different viewpoints can help us to detect features of a class. These viewpoints can include identifying groups of methods accessing a (set of) instance variable(s), groups of methods that interact among themselves to provide a functionality or groups of methods that behave as interface. Thus, with these different groups, we are able to know the different hidden characteristics of a class. In this position paper, we propose to apply Concept Analysis to generate the different groups of (collaborating) entities and use these groups to define different views. These views will help us to get the main features of a class.

The functionalities of software artifacts are defined by structural and behavioral dependencies. During evolution and maintenance phases of a system, the developer has to be able to understand how these dependencies were defined and how they influence the interaction of the artifacts. The developer must be sure that modifications done in the system will not break its behavior. In the most of the cases, this happens because the dependencies are not documented. We propose to tackle this problem in the context of object oriented classes hierarchies using Concept Analysis. We use different properties about invocations in methods to analyze the dependencies among the hierarchy classes in terms of class behaviour. Based on these results, we show a set of patterns that describe repeated kinds of behavior in class hierarchies. We show the application of these patterns in the specific case of Magnitude hierarchy in Smalltalk RÉSUMÉ.

Within maintenance software methodologies that analyze existing applications, Relational Concept Analysis (RCA) is an efficient approach to build abstractions in any language, using the existing relations between different software artifacts. Nowadays, there are several RCA-based tools, where a critical aspect is the lack of genericity in the FCA mapping to translate input (and output) data to (and from) formal/relational contexts. Most of the tools provide specific translators that can be used only with the analyzed application domain and their code needs to be changed when the framework of analysis evolves. Using Model-Driven Engineering, we propose a generic encoding/decoding process, which performs this translation with only the configuration of an encoder/decoder tool. This approach eases the integration of a FCA/RCA process in a tool and facilitates its usage on a wide range of input data formats.
