This review discusses the research evidence for psychological treatment of gambling disorder. Several treatment options for gamblers have been explored, ranging from self-help and peer support, to brief and motivational interventions, to more intensive therapy approaches. Involvement in peer support programs seems to be optimal when combined with professional treatment; however, engagement and retention in peer support is limited. Self-directed interventions appear to benefit some gamblers; however, the involvement of therapist support, either in person or by telephone, may bolster these effects and such support need not be extensive. These self-directed options reduce the barriers associated with treatment-seeking, and may reach a wider range of gamblers than professionally delivered treatments alone. Brief and motivational approaches similarly may extend treatment options to more gamblers, namely at-risk and problem gamblers and those not seeking treatment. Of more extensive thera...

When the COVID-19 pandemic started spreading globally, there was a fear that addictive behaviors would increase due to changes in everyday life caused by restrictions due to COVID-19. Studies were carried out to explore if this was true for gambling, typically revealing no overall increase in gambling behavior, although individuals who had previous experience with gambling problems were more likely to increase gambling during the pandemic. However, these studies only included individuals with previous gambling problems. It remains unknown whether other vulnerable groups, such as individuals with common mental disorders increased their gambling. This study aimed to explore the level of gambling problems among individuals with a history of mental disorders, namely, (i) pre-pandemic gamblers and (ii) pandemic-onset gamblers. Furthermore, we explored if worry and isolation mediate gambling and problem gambling. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a structural equatio...

The growth of the gambling market in Italy represents a unique case in Europe,
and has also led to the emergence of forms of addiction. The progressive legalization of
a long list of gambling products, recently introduced or previously allowed only in four
Italian casinos, has generated an “invasion” of gambling in Italian cities. Moreover, in
the context of a globalized economy increasingly influenced by neoliberal doctrines and
hegemonized by financial processes, targeted marketing strategies have contributed to
the normalization of a practice that has historically been the object of social stigmatization.
Through an anthropological-semiotic interdisciplinary approach, we have analyzed
the erosion of the physical, temporal and moral boundaries within which gambling was
relegated, focusing on the role of the spatial configurations of the slot machine venues in
inducing intensive gambling. The organization of space impacts the gaming experience
and is, in turn, shaped by the expectations of gamblers. The latter, after an initial encounter
with easily accessible machines that were once constrained by boundaries, seek to
create new barriers that allow them to immerse themselves in the game and shield themselves
from the gaze of others. Because if gambling is becoming more socially accepted,
the same does not count for the gambler who plays “too” eagerly.

Problem gambling represents a significant public health problem, however, research on effective gambling harm-minimisation measures lags behind other fields, including other addictive disorders. In recognition of the need for consistency between international jurisdictions and the importance of basing policy on empirical evidence, international conventions exist for policy on alcohol, tobacco, and illegal substances. This paper examines the evidence of best practice policies to provide recommendations for international guidelines for harm-minimisation policy for gambling, including specific consideration of the specific requirements for policies on Internet gambling. Evidence Matthijs Blankers, Claire Wilkinson, Karen Schelleman-Offermans, Janna Cousijn contributed equally to the manuscript. Conceptualization and writing of this manuscript was initiated during the IVO Master Class Addiction 2012 in The Hague/Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Several decades ago, the National Park Service's Chaco Project revealed evidence for widespread ornament manufacture at small sites (small houses) in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, as well as possible workshopscale production at two of these locations. Given that consumption of finished jewelry items is clearly concentrated at large sites (great houses), it was suggested that lapidary production was part of a larger corporate political strategy, in which goods produced in surrounding small houses were used to sustain communal events related to construction activities and ritual performances at great houses. This article addresses a critical gap in this narrative-ornament production at great houses. Using Pueblo Bonito as a case study, I present the results of a systematic analysis of lapidary tools from the site and characterize the nature of on-site ornament manufacture. I find evidence that significant jewelry-making was occurring at Pueblo Bonito, at least on par with previously documented small-house jewelry workshops, and that a portion of this was embedded within elite households. These results require us to reconsider the role of ornament production in Chacoan political economy.

Disordered gambling has been linked to increased negative affect, and some promising treatments have been shown to be effective at reducing gambling behaviors and related problems . The current study seeks to expand upon the findings of Larimer and colleagues (2012) by examining the relationship between gambling-related problems and mental health symptoms in college students. Specifically, the three-group design tested the effects of two brief interventions for gambling-an individual, in-person personalized feedback intervention (PFI) delivered using motivational interviewing and group-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), versus assessment only on mood outcomes. The mediating effect of gambling-related problems on mood was also explored. Participants (N=141; 65% men; 60% Caucasian, 28% Asian) were at-risk college student gamblers (South Oaks Gambling Screen [SOGS; ≥ 3), assessed at baseline and 6-month follow-up. Gambling problems were assessed using the Gambling Problems Index (GPI; . Mental health symptoms were assessed using the depression, anxiety, and hostility subscales of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI, Derogatis, 1993). Results revealed that the PFI condition differentially reduced negative mood, and that reductions in gambling-related problems partially mediated this effect. Implications for intervention for comorbid mood and gambling disorders are discussed.

We investigate the casino game of craps and derive the long-run expected number of unresolved pass-line and come points immediately after the n-th roll. Modeling the game as a discrete stochastic process with births and deaths of points, we show that the expectation converges to a constant as n→∞, and we calculate its value explicitly. Our method uses renewal theory for the pass-line cycle and an M/G/∞ queue interpretation for come bets.

the thrill of casino gaming has now moved into the digital sphere. The transition has opened doors for millions of players across the globe to experience slot machines, poker, blackjack, and roulette from the comfort of their homes. This digital evolution has made gambling more accessible, convenient, and interactive than ever before. Advanced Technology Behind the Scenes Online casinos owe much of evostoto their success to cutting-edge technology. Sophisticated software developers create immersive, high-definition gaming environments that mimic real-life casinos. Live dealer games use high-quality video streaming to give players the experience of sitting at a table in a real casino, complete with professional dealers and real-time interactions. Additionally, mobile optimization allows users to play on their smartphones and tablets, making the games portable and always within reach. Variety of Games and Features One of the key attractions of online casinos is the massive variety of games offered. Unlike traditional casinos with limited floor space, online platforms can host hundreds-even thousands-of games at once. From classic card games to modern themed slots and progressive jackpots, there is something for every type of player. Many platforms also offer customizable features, such as adjustable stakes, multiplayer rooms, and interactive bonuses, creating a personalized gaming experience. Bonuses, Rewards, and Promotions Online casinos heavily rely on promotional incentives to attract and retain players. Welcome bonuses, free spins, cashback offers, and loyalty rewards are just a few examples of the perks that new and regular users can enjoy. These promotions not only enhance the overall value of gameplay but also provide more opportunities to win without significant risk. VIP programs and tiered rewards systems further incentivize continued engagement, offering exclusive deals and prizes to high-level players. Safety, Regulation, and Responsible Gaming As online gambling continues to grow, so does the emphasis on safety and responsibility. Reputable online casinos operate under strict licenses and adhere to regulations set by global gaming authorities. These measures ensure fair play, data encryption, and financial security for users. Moreover, responsible gaming toolssuch as deposit limits, self-exclusion options, and support for gambling addictionare increasingly integrated to protect players from potential harm. Trustworthy platforms prioritize ethical standards and user well-being just as much as entertainment.

This study investigates the phenomenon of online gambling among university students, focusing on its underlying factors and the negative consequences it entails. At a Turkish government university, a total
of 40 students have confessed to engaging in online gambling. The inquiry utilized the methodology of phenomenology. The results were derived from a process of content analysis. The analysis involved tabulating the codes, sub-themes, and themes according to the research sub-problems. The interpretation was based on direct quotes. The participants devoted an average of 1–2 hours each day to participating in online gambling platforms at least once a week, ranked by frequency. Typically, participants utilize smartphones to access appropriate platforms and show a preference for slot machines and iddaa/match betting. Research indicates that individuals who engage in both legal and criminal online gambling sites are driven by social motivations, the thrill of the activity, and the aspiration to generate income. Ultimately, the research concluded that engaging in online gambling leads to bodily ailments, the compulsion to conceal it from loved ones, feelings of sorrow or discontentment due to financial losses, and detrimental impacts on social relationships.

This study examines the effects of governmental transitions on media freedom in North Macedonia, focusing on public sector marketing practices. A quantitative methodology was employed using a structured questionnaire, with a sample of 208 respondents working in laboratories at health centers and hospitals. Statistical analysis revealed strong positive correlations among key variables, notably that both “Personal Sales” and “After-Sales Activities” are equally significant in the context of public procurement for medical devices. A newly developed structural model highlights the importance of comprehensive marketing strategies—including product design, distribution channels, promotional communication, and pricing—alongside after-sales services. The findings contribute novel insights to marketing theory and practice, emphasizing that after-sales efforts deserve equal attention as product development in public-sector procurement frameworks.

Following Macau’s handover to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, the city became a Special Administrative Region (SAR), being “released” from nearly a century and a half of Portuguese colonial rule. With Macau under autonomous government for a period of 50 years, the liberalization of gambling in 2002 has marked the continuity of the city’s main economic activity, aiding in shaping the place of Macau within national China through the logic of a neoliberal exception. Whereas entailing a rupture in political dominance, Macau’s transition has been normalized within an agenda of national reunion, eventually captured by the Chinese central authorities in the slogan “Macau people ruling Macau,” in particular, as an appeal to the Chineseness of Macau residents.

This paper examines the dual nature of Pokémon GO, one of the most successful mobile games in history. On one hand, it praises Niantic's innovative use of augmented reality (AR) and location-based technology, which has successfully encouraged real-world social aggregation and sustained player engagement for nearly a decade. The game's integration with the broader Pokémon ecosystem and its ability to foster vibrant, global communities through live events are testaments to its positive impact. On the other hand, this paper argues that the game's monetization model, centered around microtransactions and loot box-like mechanics, operates within a significant legal and regulatory vacuum. This lack of oversight poses considerable risks, particularly for younger players, by promoting spending habits analogous to gambling and leveraging social dynamics, such as the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), to drive in-game purchases. The paper concludes that while Pokémon GO is a pioneer in mobile gaming, its economic structure necessitates urgent discussion regarding consumer protection and the regulation of virtual economies, especially where minors are concerned.

Social, political, economic, geographic and cultural processes related to the significant growth of the gambling industries have, in recent years, been the subject of a growing body of research. This body of research has highlighted relationships between social class and gambling expenditure, as well as the design, marketing and location of gambling products and businesses. It has also demonstrated the regressive nature of much gambling revenue, illuminating the influence that large gambling businesses have had on government policy and on researchers, including research priorities, agendas, and outcomes. Recently, critics have contended that although such scholarship has produced important insights about the operations and effects of gambling businesses, it is ideologically motivated and lacks scientific rigour. This response explains some basic theoretical and disciplinary concepts that such critique misunderstands, and argues for the value of social, political economic, geographic and cultural perspectives to the broader, interdisciplinary field of gambling research.

This paper reports the results of a study on the effect playing the guitar has on physical and mental wellness. Past studies have shown that musical instruments have proven to be an effective tool contributing to overall wellness. The guitar as an instrument has not yet been widely studied. To learn more about this topic I created a survey sent to guitar forums on the internet and the survey was posted for a period of three weeks. From my data collection, I found the guitar had a positive effect on a person's wellness. Clearly demonstrating the correlation between the guitar's role in emotional support, the development of physical skills, cognitive function, and overall wellness. Participants that practiced on a regular basis had physical improvements and the guitar was used as emotional support in my findings. I would be interested to see more research in this area with a particular age demographic of college students to see if playing the guitar helps alleviate some of the stressors that come with daily matriculation for a full-time student and enhance cognitive function.

Few places on Earth have experienced recent economic growth at the same level as Macau during the years of its gambling boom, which lasted for about a decade from when the first casinos after the liberalisation started to emerge in 2004. It may come as no surprise that, through gambling, the city was transformed under a broader strategy of human and urban ‘management’ in which neoliberal rationalities mediated investment, social welfare, and city development. A lot of ink has been devoted to analysing the economic, political, and social impact of Macau’s gambling governance throughout the golden years of the liberalisation and beyond, but few works have offered a platform to ‘voice’ lived experience. Drawing on ethnographic work, this article documents the reactions of Macau locals (gentes de Macau, 本地人, bun dei jan) to the potent wave of gambling-led economic growth and urbanisation, adding a layer of novelty and complexity to this debate. It re-evaluates this incredible moment in Macau’s contemporary history under the notion of the right to the city, as argued by Lefebvre and other urban theorists (Jacobs, Harvey, Massey), who see this as the right to claim a shaping power over the processes of urbanisation that affect the ways in which cities are made and remade. Ultimately, the paper argues that, despite material accumulation, the people of Macau felt somewhat dispossessed of ways to influence the course of development and robbed of their sense of belonging and city ‘ownership’.

Due to empirical and clinical reports on the Internet gaming addiction among youth and adults, as well as the latest changes in DSM 5 concerning behavioral addictions, the authors of this article bring up the rarely undertaken fenomenom of children's video gaming addiction. In particular, the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria of behavioral addictions and following controversions, prevalence of the video gaming addiction, risk and protective factors and their dynamics within the development of the maladaptive patterns of video gaming among children, are discussed. The results of the latest world studies of children's gaming misuse are analized and compared to the results of adults and youth research -among them a few longitudinal ones. Although the authors promote the developmental psychopathology attitude toward the children's video gaming overuse, they do not forget to present the newest neurobiological conceptions of IGD. Finally, the future directions of the research are outlined.

Amid the impending pandemic, electronic cockfighting (e-sabong or online sabong) has emerged as a field. It is a cultural phenomenon “of cockfighting matches, events, or activities streamed or broadcasted live from licensed or authorized cockpit arenas” (PAGCOR’s Regulatory Framework for E-Sabong). Using the philosophy of the French post-Marxist theory of Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002), who argued that it is inadequate to examine specific fields solely through financial capital, this study investigated e-sabong using his proposed capitals such as economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital. This study examines the prevailing symbolic violence perpetuating in the system and structure of online cockfighting with existing models of control of those who handle it. Though the suspension of online cockfighting is finally approved, the findings of this preliminary project are significant in the sense that it was written during the pandemic when online cockfighting flourished—a game of gambling that used to be experienced only in the actual cockfighting area, but now became possible in the comfort of one’s home.

This chapter aims to identify the variables that can predict a win in an esports game, using the Overwatch League as an exploratory example for international market entry. The goal of using predictive analytics is to pinpoint where marketing efforts should be concentrated to maximize impact. The Overwatch League was the first franchised esport with 20 city-based teams competing in 6v6 games and serves as the basis for this analysis. Utilizing logistic regressions with a binary win/ loss variable for three years of Overwatch League games, the data revealed that previous overall wins did not predict future wins. However, certain tactics and hero selections were significant predictors of success. This study highlights future areas for predictive analytics research across various esports, aiming to uncover market opportunities on a global scale. As esports leagues accumulate longer-term data, season-to-season analytics should be evaluated to discern patterns for effective market entry and growth strategies.

This research investigates how families negotiate the intensification of competitive gaming, focusing on both focal consumers
(gamers) and peripheral consumers (parents, siblings, or partners). Drawing on ethnographic, netnographic, and interview data, the
study addresses how a virtual practice evolves as gamers become more committed and how its virtual and physical elements affect not
only gamers’ experiences but also those of non-gamers. The authors have found that the negotiation of the practice follows an iterative
process of evaluation, circumscription, and reconfiguration, leading to shifts in household norms, noise management, and spatial
arrangements. As gaming transitions into a more immersive, virtual phase, its partial visibility can alienate non-gamers or heighten
tensions regarding autonomy and shared routines. This study also shows that misalignments between material arrangements, doings,
and meanings underpin many of the conflicts—yet they can be mitigated through supportive design choices, offline–online
integration, and third-party mediation. This research highlights the pivotal role that peripheral consumers play in shaping emerging
digital consumption practices. It concludes with practical and policy-level implications, offering strategies that product developers,
community organizers, and educators can implement to foster household harmony and preserve gaming’s communal potential.

The former Portuguese colony of Macau observed the twenty-fifth anniversary of its Handover to the People's Republic of China in 2024. Since the Handover, the gambling enclave has seen an acceleration in urban and infrastructural development, including the reclamation of a landmass known as the Cotai Strip and its integration into the Greater Bay Area. This article presents Macau as a unique case in the postcolonial study of film and space. Blending film interpretation, postcolonial history, and fieldwork spanning over a decade, this article introduces what the author calls the ethnographic drift as a method of cinematic and sociospatial analysis. Gambling is a widespread and popular phenomenon among adolescents. However, little is known specifically about adolescent gambling behaviors in Italy. The aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence and frequency of gambling behaviors, the types of bets most frequently chosen, the amount of money spent on gambling, and the more frequent problem gambling behaviors, taking into account the type of gambler (regular and non-regular), gender, and age. For this propose, 1255 adolescents (59.1% males) aged 13 to 19 years (M = 16.06; SD = 1.47), were recruited for the study. Results of a series of chisquared tests show that 70.8% of adolescents had gambled at least once in the previous year, with more than 68% of minors declaring that they had gambled. Among those who claimed to have gambled, 24% were regular gamblers who spent more money, had more gambling-related problems, and chose games more at risk for developing gambling addiction, compared to non-regular gamblers. Regarding gender, results show that males gambled more, more frequently, spent more, and presented more gambling-related problems than females. About age, adolescents of age gambled more on some games that involved going to places to bet than minors but no differences between minors and of-age adolescents emerged on the amount of money spent and in being a regular gambler or not. However, gender and age differences emerged only in the non-regular group, whereas in the regular-gambling group, males and females and minor and of-age adolescents did not differ on any aspect analyzed.

The Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people • who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made a living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets.

Chinese people may have a higher rate of gambling problems than other cultural groups. However, there are very few clinical outcome studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of clinical interventions for helping Chinese gamblers. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been found to be effective for helping problem gamblers to significantly reduce their gambling problems in western countries. Very few CBT clinical trials have been conducted with the Chinese populations, and the results were masked by methodological limitations. This preliminary study attempted to test the effectiveness of an integrated and culturally attuned CBT group treatment for Chinese problem gamblers in Hong Kong. This study adopted a randomized control design and 38 participants were allocated randomly to the experimental condition (n = 18) and control condition (n = 20). The experimental group received 10 weekly CBT group sessions and individual counseling services while control group only received the individual counseling services. Significant decreases in gambling severity and frequencies of gambling were found in the experimental group. The findings also showed that a change in gambling cognitions predicted the

The 2018 Supreme Court decision on Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association brought not only a change in the United States commercial gambling landscape, but also considerable speculation across public forums about whether expanded sports gambling causes new, distinct, and greater harm than existing legal forms of gambling. This commentary brings into the focus that the definition of this form of gambling has recently begun to shift without a theoretical basis or empirical evidence. To bring evidence to bear, there is a need for a precise operational definition of sport gambling and greatly clarity to the questions that can drive knowledge generation.

Impulsivity has been implicated as a contributing factor in the development of gambling problems among college students, but attempts to confirm this relation have been inconsistent. One explanation for these incongruent findings is that impulsivity may be multidimensional and that distinct dimensions differentially predict separate behaviors. Using a large, diverse sample of college students, a factor analysis of self-report measures related to impulsivity revealed a threefactor structure of Behavioral Activation, Preference for Stimulation, and Inhibition Control that was similar to the structure found by Meda and colleagues (2009) in a different adult sample. Low risk gamblers and symptomatic gamblers scored significantly lower on Behavioral Activation and Inhibition Control than non-gamblers. Conversely, low risk gamblers and symptomatic gamblers scored significantly higher on Preference for Stimulation. Prevalence of gambling and gambling activity preference for this sample was also assessed. Late adolescents and young adults are primed to behave impulsively and readily exposed to a multitude of opportunities to gamble . Cortical immaturity in this age group appears to contribute to greater sensation and novelty seeking that translates to increased impulsivity . Some suggest that adolescent and young adult impulsivity may be linked to this cohort's higher than expected rate of gambling and problem gambling (e.g., . The published research on this question, however, has yielded mixed results. Some have found that adolescent and adult gamblers are more impulsive than controls (e.g., Ledgerwood,

The acquired preparedness model posits that impulsivity influences the development of outcome expectancies that then influence the engagement in a specific risk taking behavior. The purpose of this study was to test the acquired preparedness model for gambling behavior of college students using a multidimensional approach to impulsivity. Employing a structural equation approach, it was predicted that a full mediational model that includes multiple dimensions of impulsivity and multiple outcome expectancies would predict gambling frequency and gambling symptomatology. Support was found for the acquired preparedness model in understanding why some college students gamble more frequently or problematically. Specifically, better model fit was found for the full mediational model that included outcome expectancies to predict both frequency and gambling symptomatology than the model that included the direct relation between impulsivity and gambling. The acquired preparedness model of substance abuse risk posits that impulsivity leads to selective attention to reward-related information. This bias, in turn, influences a person's outcome expectancies and ultimately the engagement in the risk taking behavior. Studies on various risk behaviors by college students have provided support for this model (e.g., Vangsness, Bry, Erich & Labouvie, 2005), but have not tested the model with gambling. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the acquired preparedness model can be used to evaluate the relation between three impulsivity dimensions and more proximal risk factors of outcome expectancies on gambling involvement and problematic gambling risk. The acquired preparedness model is based on Patterson and Newman's (1993) operationalization of disinhibition as the tendency for individuals to impulsively seek reward

Expectancy theory posits that decisions to engage in a given behavior are closely tied to expectations of the outcome of that behavior. Gambling outcome expectancies have predicted adolescent gambling and gambling problems. When high school students' outcome expectancies were measured by Wickwire, Whelan and Meyers (2010), the Adolescent Gambling Expectancy Survey (AGES) revealed five categories of expectancies that were each predictive of gambling frequency and pathology. The present study aimed to explore if the AGES could be successfully replicated with college students. When administered to a diverse college student population, factor analyses identified five factors similar to those found in the high school sample. Several factors of the AGES were also found to predict gambling frequency and gambling problems for college students. Gambling frequency and gambling activity preference were also addressed. Expectancy theory proposes that the decision to behave is related to the expected result or outcome of that behavior (e.g., . Consistent with this theory, high school students' gambling and problematic gambling have been predicted by the gambling outcome expectancies held by these students (Gillespie, Derevensky, & Gupta, 2007a, 2007b;. This same finding has received preliminary support in college students (Fischer & Smith, 2012). To better understand this relation in college students, a comprehensive measure of outcome expectancies is needed. Wickwire, Whelan, and Meyers (2010) developed a measure of gambling outcome

Compared to college females, college males are more likely to report frequent gambling. Research on gambling outcome expectancies has shown that expectations about gambling influence gambling behavior and that endorsement of particular expectancies differs by gender. Knowledge regarding the differential predictive utility of specific gambling expectancies based on gender would help to determine how beliefs about gambling may be fundamentally different for men and women. The present study explored whether gender moderates the relation between gambling expectancy and gambling frequency in a college sample. 421 college students completed an online survey that included questions about their demographics, gambling frequency, and gambling expectancies. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that gender moderated the relations between the expectancies of social consequences, material gain, and gambling frequency. For females, greater endorsement of social consequences predicted less frequent gambling. For both males and females, greater endorsement of material gain predicted more frequent gambling. The current findings can help inform prevention and intervention efforts by identifying gambling expectations that are differentially related to college student gambling behavior choices. Gambling has become a popular activity among college students, with an estimated 75% of college students reporting gambling in the past year . Recent prevalence studies indicate that 8% of college students met diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling, and approximately 11% reported subclinical gambling-related problems . The disparate impact of gambling problems among this cohort is noteworthy due to the academic, financial, and health consequences associated with problematic gambling . Among college students, men were more likely to report frequent gambling than college females (31% and 6%, respectively; , and disordered gambling has been traditionally higher among men although this gender gap appears to be diminishing Welte

This paper explores the growing phenomenon of sports betting among Nigerian youth as a reflection of deeper socio-economic and cultural issues. While the practice is often attributed to economic hardship—such as unemployment and a rising cost of living—this study moves beyond surface-level explanations. It interrogates the role of globalization, shifting value systems, internet access, and media influence in normalizing gambling as a cultural norm. Drawing on psychological and sociological perspectives, including emerging data from Nigeria and other African contexts, the paper argues that sports betting represents a cultural crisis in disguise—one with serious implications for youth development, education, and national identity.

Gaining a coherent overview of research trends promotes our understanding on the scope and breadth of select fields of study. The investigation of the psychological and social factors, in both recreational and pathological gambling, has attracted extensive scholarly attention for decades. Yet few studies have examined the intellectual structure of this evolving field, particularly the scope of topical areas of investigatory interest. The current study utilized a bibliometric approach to examine subject matter coverage in 2 prominent journals in the field (Journal of Gambling Studies, Journal of Gambling Issues) over the past 10 years. The content analysis, comprising 824 studies, indicated that the most prominent areas of research focus were, in rank order: treatment approaches, theory/models, sporting events, subtypes/profile, cognitive distortions, measurement/assessment, etiology/risk factors, substance abuse, and prevention. There is extensive research attention on the detrimental impact of problem gambling on adolescents, particularly in the context of video-gaming. As copious avenues for sports-betting have proliferated in recent years, researchers have shifted their investigatory focus to this emergent area. In addition, under-studied areas of research attention (e.g., anxiety, sleep issues, loneliness) were also identified. Overall, this content analysis indicated that there is a wide breadth of topical coverage in these top-tier gambling journals. The findings a) should be considered exploratory in nature, b) highlight popular research areas of scientific interest, and c) provide a scaffold and catalyst for future research efforts in the area of gambling-related disorders.

Young adulthood is a period renowned for engagement in impulsive and risky behaviors, including gambling. There are some indications that young adults exhibit higher gambling rates in comparison to older adults. Problem gambling has also been linked to ADHD. This longitudinal study examines the relationship between gambling and ADHD among an epidemiological sample of young adults (n = 235; males = 179, females = 56) aged 18-24. Results indicate that individuals who report childhood ADHD symptoms which persist into young adulthood experience greater gambling problem severity than participants with no ADHD or those with non-persistent ADHD.
