In light of recent "bathroom bills" in several states, this essay addresses gender identity in the Bible, which proponents of the bills claim supports their legislation. However, this essay argues that the Bible challenges many aspects of gender, especially in Roman perspective, and actually supports a more tolerant and communal respect for gender identity and the transgender community as a whole.

In 1972, Syed Mustafa Siraj (1930-2012) published Māyā Mridanga, a novel which has attained an iconic status in recent years[1], with the advent of queer studies and a proliferation of queer texts in South Asia. Since its first appearance, the novel, set within an almost extinct itinerant folk theatre group, Alkaap, drew the attention of scholars working on aboriginal and folk cultures of Bengal; but, they have largely ignored Siraj’s declaration in the 1972 preface that the novel primarily deals with the cross-dressing male actors (p.5), the chhokras–jara purush tobu purush noy, nari – tobu nari o noy (Men, who are not men, but women – yet, not quite women either, p. 12). Siraj’s novel is a rare modern Bengali text to address deep philosophical questions of sexual subject formation, of essence and existence, of being and becoming.

Who was Catalina de Erauso, the Lieutenant Nun? Swashbuckler, brawler, hard-headed businessperson, soldier, gallant, celebrity, transvestite, nun? How can one fail to be fascinated by her? A woman, yet a man; a soldier, yet a nun; Spanish, yet Basque. Catalina de Erauso embodied the contradictions and conflicts of the Early Modern Period, but she also transcended them in her own way. She became a stage on which we see how tensions between different identities played out in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Spain, particularly the tensions between two sexual identities, male and female, and between the competing and multiple national "identities" already defined and being defined within that new thing that was "Spain." This book explores the different facets of Erauso's persona: her sexual identity and the factors that determined her choice of gender roles; and her Basque origin and its impact on her life and her self-image.

This article addresses the concern that decision-making in sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI) asylum claims in Europe is often unfair, and that one way to remedy this is by improving the guidance provided to decision-makers when interpreting the Refugee Convention in respect of these claims. We begin by interrogating a number of different decision-making guidelines and models to assess whether they contribute to a fairer asylum system. We show that, for claims based on SOGI, success invariably depends on the decision-maker's assessment as to whether a claimant is, or would be perceived in their home country to be, a member of a SOGI minority, and so belongs to a Particular Social Group. Such focus risks neglecting analysis of the actual risk of persecution. We set out our own recommendation for a fairer approach based on prioritising SOGI-specific Country of Origin Information (COI) and the risk of persecution, rather than focusing on whether applicants are 'genuinely' members of a SOGI minority. We argue that this will lead to fairer outcomes that are less likely to be overturned on appeal and more consistent with the Refugee Convention's spirit and letter.

We will explore the gendered viewpoints and voices of a variety of essayists, writers, filmmakers, storytellers, historians, and activists. In particular, we will investigate how personal & political identities (like gender, race, class, and sexuality) position individuals differently in society, which contributes to how individuals experience and make sense of their world. We will study how our own relationships within American cultural systems of privilege and oppression contribute to the theories, ideas, narratives, norms, and stories we see as the " norm. " We will examine how individuals resist inequalities, create new systems of change, and engage in transformational politics. Although some of the focus of the course is women's experiences, we will question what the term " woman " actually means by expanding the category to include a range of diverse perspectives. We will consider women, men, and non-binary individuals equally as agents of change, whose lives and projects impact the direction of feminism, culture, and " voice " on a wider scale.

Quote from the review:
"As well as giving complex accounts of embodied subjectivity through emphasis on intersectional analysis, the second Reader makes evident how transgender studies has moved beyond poststructuralist perspectives on gendered embodiment, which is a shift that is in line with emerging themes and conceptual developments in feminist, queer and gender studies more generally. However, as the articles do not follow a specific theoretical shift, this move is not made normative. Instead the anthology as a whole oscillates between different perspectives and concepts. It should, moreover, be mentioned that the articles overall are written by authors who do remarkable, thorough and sound theoretical and empirical work. While most of the texts are new, there are also some classical texts that have been published previously. On the whole, Transgender Studies Reader 2 demonstrates the maturation and expansion of the field, at the same time as it shows the importance of previous work."

Following the death of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen who committed suicide after forced “conversion therapy,” President Barack Obama called for a nationwide ban on psychotherapy aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity. The administration argued that because conversion therapy causes substantial psychological harm to minors, it is neither medically nor ethically appropriate. We fully agree with the President and believe that this is a step in the right direction. Of course, in addition to being unsafe as well as ethically unsound, current conversion therapy approaches aren’t actually effective at doing what they claim to do – changing sexual orientation. But we also worry that this may be a short-term legislative solution to what is really a conceptual problem. The question we ought to be asking is “what will happen if and when scientists do end up developing safe and effective technologies that can alter sexual orientation?”

In this chapter, I reclaim the “gay agenda” rhetoric favored by proponents of the North American religious right and redirect it towards the true “gay agenda” of anti-homophobia education researchers using my own research as an example. My research agenda is an overt attempt to ensure that the “gay agenda” of anti-homophobia education reaches Catholic schools and exposes the religiously-inspired oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (lgbtq) students and teachers in many of these schools. I outline the particular problem of homophobia in Catholic schools, what motivates me to study this problem, the theoretical orientation I espouse, and the significance of this research to the broader public.

This report provides the main analytical results of a survey distributed to gender minority students (i.e. transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming) in Irish higher education (Third-Level Programmes). The survey touched upon daily lived-experiences and issues of safety, the efficacy of administrative policies, obstacles (on- and off-campus), and sources of support. The aim of the report was to capture essential quantitative and qualitative information that could be used to better students' lives, increase the effectiveness of gender policies, and lobby for reform (regarding issues such as trans health care, third gender recognition, and hate crime laws).

The objective of the research was to explore the role of social-economic factors in the academic
achievement of first year students at a South African University. A survey was conducted with a sample size of 210
students. The influence of the following variables were examined with inferential statistics: having English as a
home language; being a first-generation student; quality of high school attended; size of physical living/study space
of a student and household structure. Chi-square tests showed that in this sample home language, type of high
school and living/study space impacted on students’ performance.

Bisexual asylum seekers constitute a very low percentage among LGBT asylum seekers (Rehaag, 2009). While there is not enough data about the percentage of bisexual individuals among the LGBT population of the countries where most of these asylum seekers come from, some studies claim that the number of individuals who are attracted to more than one sex or gender is much higher than the number of gay and lesbian individuals in countries like US and UK (YouGov, 2015a, 2015b). Although human rights treaties and conventions claim to support all LGBT asylum seekers (e.g. UNHCR, 2011: 5, 2012: 4; The Council of the European Union, 2004; U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, 2011); in practice, bisexual asylum seeker’s claims may be rejected more than lesbian, gay and trans asylum seekers (Rehaag, 2009, Jansen and Spijkerboer, 2011; La Violette, 2015). In this chapter, I will review previous studies as well as theoretical discussions on asylum and sexual orientation to explain the invisibility of bisexual asylum seekers and discuss how they have to perform “refugee-ness” and “gayness” to fit within a dominant mononormative narrative to increase their chance of being granted asylum. In the end, I will review a recent study which shows that the chance of bisexual asylum seekers to be granted asylum has increased in the Netherlands (Jansen, 2019). However, as Jansen and Spijkerboer (2011) showed there have been significant differences between asylum policies of different European countries. Consequently, I will conclude that more studies need to be done to explore if the asylum policies in Europe have become more bi-inclusive.

This paper draws on psychoanalytic theories of embodiment to theorize the child’s creative use of objects and signs to represent a gendered sense of self. Turning to Winnicott’s concept of “true self,” we extend this symbolic labour to the transgender child to illustrate the psychic processes of embodiment that contribute to a meaningful gendered existence otherwise obstructed by social hatred and transphobia. Through a reading of the film Tomboy, we discuss the conditions needed to support the child’s representation of transgender as creative, which, while unique, is also a human act of symbolization.

'This is an important publication as it is the first book to engage in depth with suicidality and self-harm in a diverse range of queer youth. The authors draw on a range of social science perspectives in order to better understand why, despite some evidence of increasing societal acceptance of sexual diversity, LGBTQ youth are still at greater risk of self-harm than their heterosexual peers'-Jonathan Scourfield, Cardiff University, UK 'Elizabeth McDermott and Katrina Roen extend the boundaries of current thinking about suicide and self-harm for queer identified youth who are commonly positioned as inherently "risky" subjects. They offer insights into the embodied, structural and discursive conditions that generate emotional distress and hence they open up critical questions about how self-harming practices could be prevented. Drawing upon contemporary social theory, this book contributes to a deeper understanding of how young LGBT young people negotiate their emerging subjectivities in relation to normative ideas about sexuality, success and emotional life. Written in an engaging style and drawing upon rich empirical material, McDermott and Roen develop a compelling interdisciplinary approach that brings together insights from critical psychology, feminism, sociology and queer theory. The book also had immense applied value for professionals and policy makers who desire more critically reflexive, sensitive and hopeful ways of responding to the complex emotional lives (and deaths) of queer youth.'-Simone Fullagar, University of Bath, UK

This chapter discusses recent scholarship on Catalina de Erauso-'the Lieutenant Nun'-one of the more controversial figures of the early seventeenth century. Erauso fled from a convent at age fifteen; from then on, she dressed as a man and lived a life of travel, violence, and adventure. Her autobiography replicates the fluidity of her gender assignment, showing elements from different religious and secular writings. Both the person and the text are characterized by their defying of categorization. In Erauso, binary oppositions such as male/female, saint/sinner, Basque/ Spaniard seem to be subsumed. Erauso's Basque origin emerges as a key element for the understanding of her life, and her story becomes a privileged documentation of the Basque experience in America in the early modern era. In the early modern period, political borders were often in flux, and people were 'strongly aware of the potentially shifting, unstable nature of borders, which are arbitrary and political'. 1 This fluctuation, however, was not confined merely to political boundaries. Humans have long understood that edges-whether they be of countries, between the spiritual and the secular, and indeed between categories of classification and study-are, in 1 Hopkins, Renaissance Drama on the Edge, 106.

Such a pedagogical practice centers questions of nonnormative embodiment and histories of inclusion/exclusion from academic spaces within " trans " instructional praxis.

There is a well-documented absence of inclusive school-based sex and relationships education (SRE) for Australian lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth. Moreover, relatively few studies specifically examine how bisexual and queeridentifying young Australian women experience SRE. This qualitative study addresses the gap and contributes new perspectives by examining bisexual and queer young women’s experiences of school-based SRE in the state of Tasmania through the lens of sexual citizenship. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 15 Tasmanian bisexual and queer young women, we argue that biomedical, risk-based and heteronormative approaches to SRE reduce young women’s sexual health literacy. By framing SRE around the concept of ‘sexual citizenship’, this article provides important guidance on how SRE can more effectively provide bisexual and queer young women with the skills they need to be effective, engaged sexual citizens.
