The study of Gemara has connected Jewish people across time and space for centuries. Through our learning, we encounter and learn from rabbis living in a time and place that is very different from our own. Properly understood, the Gemara raises important questions that affect our interpretation of the social and cultural worlds in which we live. It does so against the background of generations of texts that serve as the basis for Jewish values and practice, broadening our understanding of Torah and the world. Sometimes, the fusing of these horizons is readily accessible. In some sugyot, the cultural differences described in the Gemara raise significant questions for the yeshiva high school student and the teacher as well. Too often, when this occurs, we are all too ready to attribute this dissonance to an unbridgeable distance between ourselves and the sacred world of the Gemara. We quickly read through those lines until we reach the more readily accessible text. In the Faculty Beit Midrash at Machon Siach, we become purposeful and deliberate when we experience such challenges. The tension embodied in a few difficult lines of Gemara often provides an opportunity to broaden our understanding of the human experience through our learning. To achieve this in our classrooms, teachers must anticipate the questions that our students will ask upon encountering the sugya. Anticipating these questions can shape the way that we, as teachers, learn the Gemara; it shines a light on what we must understand in order to explain the sugya to ourselves and our students. Learning Masekhet Kiddushin in the high school classroom, we encounter Chazal's perspective on many aspects of Jewish marriage. Sometimes, this opens us to aspects of the marital relationship that are less prominent in contemporary culture. For example, our students are raised in an environment where love between two people is the most prominent, and perhaps the most valid, reason for marriage. Chazal's view pushes us to appreciate, for example, that marriage also contains an economic component, the long

This paper reinterprets Molière’s L'École des femmes (1662) as a theatrical negotiation with Catholic norms on female obedience and morality. Focusing on the contrast between Arnolphe’s authoritarian model of education and Horace’s affective pedagogy through love, the analysis shows how the play satirizes religious ideology without directly attacking faith. Molière exposes the oppressive use of religious instruction in shaping women’s roles, while ultimately affirming a Christian ethic grounded in love and mutual respect.

This study examines, within the broader context of historical and cultural influences from Byzantine and Western canonical traditions, the canonical and theological treatment of physical disabilities as impediments to the priesthood within modern Orthodox Canon Law. It shows how traditional Orthodox Canon Law, particularly influenced by medieval Roman Catholic canonical understanding, has historically emphasised physical integrity as a requirement for ordination. The study critically examines historical and contemporary canonical attitudes towards candidates with hearing, speech, or visual impairments or with locomotor disability through the analysis of Apostolic canons, Canons of Ecumenical Councils, and later canonical sources. The methods include a critical canonical and historical analysis of primary sources such as the Canons, patristic writings, and synodal legislation, with particular reference to the initiatives of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the modern cultural and pastoral context. The study observes that, although such impairments continue to be recognised as canonical impediments according to traditional Orthodox law, contemporary ecclesial practice increasingly reflects a pastoral sensitivity that allows, in certain contexts, for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in ordained ministry. This is typically achieved through adaptations that preserve the integrity of liturgical function, such as assistance from co-ministers or specialised training. These developments, while not amounting to a formal canonical revision, signal a broader pastoral and ecclesiological openness toward the integration of persons with disabilities within the life of the Church.

Up to only a few years ago, the royal household was of no interest to historians, and the few that researched the topic (always from an institutionalist approach), viewed it simply as a group of offices
and people, extrapolating the reality of the 1800s and 1900s to previous centuries. However, the royal household was much more than that and, fortunately, over the past three decades it has begun to be examined in the context of late medieval and early modern discourses that gave shape
to and justified royal power. Rulers each established their own households and forms of service.
Although they all sought originality to give their monarchy a distinctive identity, most were similarly structured into sections or departments, and we therefore find six recurring elements. Although the hierarchy varied from monarchy to monarchy, the order of precedence was generally as
follows: Chapel, Chamber, Household or Offices, Stables, Guard, and the Hunt. Each section in turn encompassed three different and complementary aspects: the section’s servants, the ruler and
his family’s physical or spiritual need, and a physical space in the royal geographies. This article analyses the links between the various sections of the Spanish monarchy’s royal household and the physical spaces of its royal geographies, as well as their evolution during the Habsburg period (the 16th-17th centuries).

When two people decide to part ways after a marriage, the legal and emotional aftermath can be overwhelming. One of the most deeply debated and significant components of family law is alimony-a structured financial agreement that ensures economic fairness for the spouse who may not have equal income or opportunity post-divorce. Often misunderstood and emotionally charged, the concept of alimony has seen significant evolution to accommodate changing family dynamics and societal values.

For Okiek in Kenya, marriage arrangement is a nexus where transformations of personhood and social relations, changes in land tenure, and shifting state engagements come together in ways that shape individual and family lives as well as communities. This article sketches transformations in Okiek life and marriage arrangement and considers how Okiek have managed interlineage discussions central to marriage arrangement. It explores the social dynamics, evocative rhetorics, uncertainties, and moral imaginations through which people constitute lineages and affinal relations in changing circumstances, and situates these processes within a longer historical trajectory of socioeconomic and demographic change. The author points to some crucial chracteristics of the Zeeland countryside’s social history during the 20th century when society changed profoundly. He considers the 1940-s as a turning point, contrary to other historians who hold that the sixties constituted the main rupture in Dutch society. In Zeeland the power of the local farmers was broken in the forties: collective agreements were reached on a national scale (instead as a result of local bargaining) and the huge farmworker population had the opportunity to leave the farms for working in the rebuilding process after the wartime devastations. He points to some of the mistakes made by others who have written about the emancipation of the agricultural labourers in the Zeeland region. The socialist view, held by K. Slager, that the protestant and roman-catholic farmworkers’ organisations retarded the emancipation, is wrong and echoes mainly contemporaneous socialist literature (magazines), not the practice-in-the-field. The author takes sides with Paul Luykx (Nijmegen University) who has pointed to the discord in the roman-catholic population between workers and conservative élite in the greater part of the 20th century.

This paper examines one political marriage in the 17th century, using Elene Atabaghi (Jakeli) as a case study. In the Middle Ages, dynastic marriages were a very important factor in solving many political or social problems, as well as strengthening relations in a monarchical or, in general, high social society. In the late Middle Ages, in particular, in the 17th century, Georgia was in a difficult socio-economic and political situation. This factor influenced the moral and ethical image of the Georgian society.
Levan II Dadian (1611-1657), the head of Samegrelo, was an important political figure in the 30s and 40s of the 17th century.. The prince's political ambitions first led to the political marriage of his half-sister, Mariam Dadiani, with the King of Kartli, Rostom Khan, in the 30s of the 17th century, thus forming the coalition of Kartli and Samegrelo against Kakheti and Imereti, and then in the 40s of the 17th century, this was followed by the marriage of Elene with Shah Sefi of Persia.
The marriage of Elene and Shah Sef had a special diplomatic significance not only in strengthening political and diplomatic relations between the Principality of Samegrelo and the Kingdom of Kartli, but this marriage had also to play an important role in diplomacy between Iran and Samegrelo. At this time Safavid Persia is involved in the war against the Ottomans, so the vassal of the Ottoman Empire - the Principality of Samegrelo - is actively trying to change the political vector, and Persia is presented as the main supporting force. Thus, this article describes how one young woman's personal life was sacrificed to political and diplomatic interests.

The Parsees are the descended from native Persians who immigrated to India to avoid religious persecution by the Arabs. The Parsees, despite being one of the world's smallest ethnic groups in India, have left an indelible mark on the country's entrepreneurial landscape that far exceeds their numerical size. This exploration traces the historical trajectory of Parsee entrepreneurship, unfolding from the 16th century in Surat to their continued prominence in present-day Mumbai. Beyond their pivotal contributions to the nation's economic fabric, the Parsees have become synonymous with excellence in various industries. Their legacy endures through iconic business houses, with names like the Tata's, Wadia's, Godrej, and Poonawala, exemplifying the enduring impact of the Parsee community on India's economic tapestry.

forvaltningssystem i Danmark-Norge.
slottsloven i lensherrens fravær.
Rekruttering gikk gjennom to

Today, two entities lay claim to the name of the Order of Saint Stephen.
The first, authentic and historical, is the Order of Saint Stephen Pope and Martyr, founded in 1561 by Cosimo I de’ Medici. It is a national state order (“of the Crown”), whose current Grand Master is the Titular Grand Duke Ottaviano de’ Medici of Tuscany.
The second, by contrast, is an order created in 1972 by Goffredo von Habsburg-Lorraine. It is a foreign dynastic-family order, lacking historical continuity with the original and recognized by the Italian State under Law 178/51 as “non-national,” given its foreign nature.
A fundamental distinction, necessary to honour historical truth and respect Italy’s legitimate traditions.

Let no man miss his glas by stealth but all with one consent agree to drink a brimmer to the health of James the duke of Albany This optimistic song was sung in 1680 by Scotland's bishops as they toasted the health of James, duke of Albany and York, before he became King James VII of Scotland and II of England. This is the king removed at the Revolution of 1689, exiled to France and, through the Latin of his name, the founding father of Jacobitism. Jacobitism, like all political labels, is an idea at the behest of the user. It has been subjected to mythmaking planted in the fertile soil of Scotland's history: the bravery of highlanders, anti-Englishness and resentment at the death of clan society, for example. Essentially, Jacobitism was a minority sport with most Scots in the eighteenth century favouring the Hanoverian regime. The romanticism of the Jacobite Highlander, however compelling, has created exaggerated ideas of patriotism when both sides thought they were patriots who sat nearest to God. Oddly, James has been almost forgotten in the pantheon of Jacobite leaders, an unfortunate embarrassment to the cause. He became a Catholic when kings of England and Scotland had to be Protestant and his inadequacies initiated the monarchical crisis. On the other hand, in more ways than label making, initially Jacobitism needed its James.

This volume presents a curated collection of quotations, commentaries, and theological reflections on Emanuel Swedenborg’s Conjugial Love (1768), the most comprehensive work in the Western canon on the spiritual and eternal nature of marriage. Drawing upon Swedenborg’s claim that true marriage originates in the union of Divine Love and Divine Wisdom, the book explores the essential distinctions between male and female, the origin of marriage in the prelapsarian human, and the possibility of an eternal conjugial union between one man and one woman in this world and the next. Framed in dialogue with historical, psychological, and doctrinal developments across time, this work addresses contemporary confusions around sexuality, gender, and the meaning of intimacy. The author provides contextual insights rooted in both traditional Swedenborgian theology and modern scholarship, offering readers a systematic and accessible entry into one of Swedenborg’s most profound and often misunderstood works. This book serves not only as a reference for scholars but also as a devotional and philosophical guide for those seeking to understand the sacred purpose of love, marriage, and human union with the Divine.

This study explores the covenantal and redemptive role of the word 'visit' (pāqaḏ-)פקד in Hebrew Scripture, specifically within the context of the Greek (episkeptomaiἐπισκέπτομαι) in James 1:27. Contrary to common interpretations that frame the verse as a call to charity, this work posits that it serves as a prophetic command, illustrating YHWH's redemptive acts through the redemption of widows and orphans by covering them as wives and children. By examining patriarchal, national, and messianic patterns of redemption, we demonstrate that visiting widows and orphans is a practical application of exercising covenant headship, reflecting YHWH's unchanging nature and the righteous purpose of redemption through polygyny. Through scriptural analysis and contextual exploration, the study aims to establish how James 1:27 aligns with the Levirate marriage principle and reveals the prophetic imaging of YHWH's redemptive actions.

Ptolemaic and Roman Oxyrhynchus is relatively well-documented through the Greek papyri from the site, while there are far fewer texts written in Egyptian from the same locality, which can offer additional perspectives. This paper takes a small step towards addressing this issue by presenting an edition and study of three Oxyrhynchite Demotic documents related to two marriages from the late 1st century BC. Two papyri detail the first marriage, and the third text records the second one. Unique among Demotic materials published so far is the fact that one of the deeds is a ‘dowry document’ (sẖ-n-grg.t), providing new insights into the economic arrangements of Egyptian matrimony. The documents also contribute to our understanding of the relationship between military ranks, ethnicity, and onomas-tics at the time. The men bear Greek names and are, at least in one case, part of the catoecic cavalry at Oxyrhynchus, but still chose to enter the agreement through an Egyptian document. It is argued that while it is possible that the contract-ing parties may have been Hellenised Egyptians, it cannot be excluded that they were descendants of earlier Greek settlers who both spoke Egyptian and conducted their business in the native language.

In the beginning of de ciuitate dei (ciu.), Augustine announces the subject of his work, namely, "to defend (defendere) the most glorious City of God, both as it is living by faith in the course of time, a pilgrim among the impious, and in the stable security of its eternal seat, which it now awaits through patient endurance." Augustine goes on to remark that, in order to accomplish this task, he will not be able to "pass over in silence whatever the plan and logic of the task," that is, the defense of the city of God, "stipulates to be said about the earthly city." This city is one that, "in its desire for domination is itself dominated, even when peoples are enslaved to it, by the lust of domination itself." 1 In the whole of ciu. there are few passages that are more familiar than this one, yet it is probable that we only rarely if ever hear it fully. It is interesting to note that discussion of the earthly city is not the primary aim of ciu., but, because it is something which is required by the primary subject matter, it "must not be passed over in silence." From the very outset of the treatise, discussion of the earthly city is secondary and derivative to discussion of the "most glorious City of God.

The primary purpose of this paper is to establish some biblical boundaries for dealing pastorally with divorce and remarriage. A secondary purpose is to argue against two positions on the subject of divorce and remarriage that appear to have become common primarily within certain conservative circles: 1) that remarriage after a divorce is actually living in a state of continual adultery, and 2) that it is God's will for people who get saved, after having been divorced and remarried, to divorce their second spouse and return to their first spouse.

In some countries, legal systems are deeply shaped by religious doctrines, especially in areas concerning personal status, such as marriage, divorce, child custody, and inheritance. Under these frameworks, individuals belonging to different religious communities are often governed by distinct sets of laws. Although they may possess equal citizenship in theory, the legal rights, responsibilities, and protections afforded them in personal and familial matters can differ significantly depending on their religious affiliation.
When the state fails to address legal disparities—or worse, reinforces them—individuals are often left to navigate these inequalities on their own. In some cases, this leads people to strategically convert to another religion or denomination, not out of sincere theological conviction but as a means to access certain legal rights or to bypass restrictive rules imposed by their original religious framework. Such conversions can be motivated by practical concerns, such as gaining more favorable terms in divorce, custody disputes, inheritance claims, or marriage arrangements.
I explore three legal domains where strategic conversion is used to access a certain legal status or gain a stronger legal position in a potential legal dispute (i.e., involving marriage, divorce, or inheritance) and explain how states, and especially courts, respond to such legal strategies.

The article examines the status and functions of peace mediators in conflicts of the pre‑Mongol Rus’ based on materials of three chronicles: the Primary Chronicle, the Kyivan Chronicle (according to the Hypatian and similar manuscripts) and the First Novgorodian Chronicle. Among mediators of this period, two main groups can be distinguished: (1) the closest younger relatives of one of the competitors; these juniors could be both the initiators of a truce agreement and intermediate persons whom a defeated enemy applied to; and (2) peacemakers, who, on the contrary, were maximally distanced from the conflict and who had no personal interest in it, but had a very high status of a ruler or similar. Often, such a mediator could be a foreign ruler, usually of a neighboring land. The political practices used to end conflicts in the medieval Rus’ demonstrate a wide range of people involved, including young princes, widowed princesses, clergy: metropolitans, bishops and abbots of famous monasteries. The negotiation process itself could take place in several stages with more than one element in the peacekeeping chain.
