Imagine a continent on the brink of environmental transformation where businesses claim to champion sustainability, yet behind the glossy reports and eco-friendly branding lies a disturbing truth. Greenwashing the deceptive act of exaggerating environmental commitments is silently eroding the foundations of Africa’s corporate sustainability movement, turning well-intentioned progress into performative gestures. In a region already facing climate risks, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity, the consequences of misleading environmental claims extend far beyond reputation. They undermine genuine sustainability efforts, stall climate action, and deceive stakeholders who rely on corporate accountability to shape a more resilient future. If greenwashing continues unchecked, will Africa’s sustainability drive be remembered as real progress or as a grand illusion?

The media does not only inform educate and enlighten but also act as a driver to the developmental steps to better the society. This study examined the coverage of open defecation in select Nigerian online newspapers. The study used the Agenda setting theory as the theoretical underpinning of the study. Content analysis was also adopted as methodology for caring out the quantitative study, with the coding sheet as the instrument of data collection. The composite sampling technique was adopted for the study of 104 editions of the select newspapers. The findings revealed that in the 12 months that were studied, only 79 stories of open defecation were altogether found in the sampled papers. The study found out that the selected Nigerian newspapers did not give prominence to the coverage of open defecation. Results also showed that the stories covered were mostly of the straight news format. Finding also discovered that the direction of coverage given to open defecation issues in the select newspapers were negative. The study concluded that during the period of study the select newspapers did not give prominence to the coverage of open defecation thereby failing in their agenda setting role to the society. Thus the study recommended that newspapers should give prominence to open defecation in the light of the 2025 open defecation free Nigeria goal and to emphasise in-depth and interpretative coverage of health issues and other related matter.

Public health advocacy plays a crucial role in promoting and protecting the health and well-being of communities. It involves the efforts of many stakeholders to influence public health policies, practices, and systems to improve health outcomes and create healthier environments. Advocacy strategies in public health include raising awareness about health issues, mobilising communities, engaging policy-and decision-makers, and media. These are particularly fruitful and needed strategies to strengthen alcohol prevention and control advocacy efforts in low-and middle-income countries. Public health advocacy has been successful in achieving significant improvements in health outcomes. However, challenges exist, such as lack of advocacy knowledge and skills among public health workforce, resistance from powerful interest groups (e.g., unhealthy industries), limited resources. As such, this Note from the Field highlights some key dimensions and strategies that are applicable for strengthening advocacy in general, but may also be particularly relevant for alcohol prevention.

Egypt is undergoing many reforms and advocates seek to get policy makers to adopt some policy changes that can resolve many of the social problems faced by the nation. Sexual Harassment (SH) is a serious problem that needs integrated efforts among advocates, media, policy makers and the public to fight it. Media advocacy incorporates them altogether; the media direct the light on the advocates’ policy goals and solutions to influence policy makers and generate favorable public debate. The objective of the study is to examine to what extent media advocacy on SH issue in Egypt is strategically employed. It reviews the planning, implementation, media and policy outcomes of the media advocacy campaign on SH issue as well as its influential factors. This study is an attempt to bridge the gap between media and policy studies. For the methodology, the study employed the qualitative method using case study approach on SH. It conducted eighteen in depth interviews using the triangulation app...

Bu araştırmada, bir üniversite hastanesi yerleşkesinde, erişkin hastanesi ve öğrenci kütüphanesi önünde belirlenmiş kriterler kullanılarak gözlem yapılarak sigarasız alan düzenlemesine uyumun değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipteki araştırma 13-17 Mart 2017 tarihleri arasında Hacettepe Üniversitesi Sıhhiye Yerleşkesi Erişkin Hastanesi ve Sağlık Bilimleri Kütüphanesi giriş kapısı önünde 4415 kişi üzerinde gözlem tekniği kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Araştırma için kurumdan yazılı resmi izin alınmıştır. Verilerin analizi SPSS 15.0 istatistiksel paket programı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırma süresi boyunca gözlenen kişilerin %31,9'u kadın, %68,1'i erkektir. Gözlenen kişilerin %13,7'si sağlık personelidir. Gözlenen kişilerin %35,5'inin sigarasız alan içinde, %64,5'inin ise sigarasız alan dışında tütün kullandığı saptanmıştır. Hastane önünde tütün kullananların %21,9'u sigarasız alan içinde, kütüphane önünde tütün kullananların %80,8'i sigarasız alan içinde gözlenmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Sigarasız açık alan, pasif etkilenim, hastane, kütüphane ABSTRACT Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate compliance with the regulation of tobacco free zones by observing people smoking outside of the library and the adult hospital both inside the campus of a university hospital.

Nigeria bears the highest burden of Lassa fever in Africa, accounting for about 60% of the 5,000 annual mortalities attributable to the haemorrhagic disease. In the absence of preventive vaccines, the mass media have been deployed as independent and complementary interventions against the spread of the infection. This study examines the influence of mass media exposure on Lassa fever risk perception and risk behaviours among residents of eight rural communities in South-south Nigeria. Anchored on the Health Belief Model and Social Influence Theory, the study used survey questionnaires to collect data from 384 respondents selected through multistage sampling. Findings show that media exposure is positively related to Lassa fever risk perception (β = .519, 95% CI: .432, .607), but negatively associated with risk behaviours towards the zoonotic disease (β =-.797, 95% CI:-.922,-.671). Nevertheless, media influence on respondents' risk perception and risk behaviours tends to vary significantly along sex, geographical region and employment status. Given the endemic nature of Lassa fever in Nigeria, the study recommends the sustenance of public sensitisation efforts aimed at preventing the spread of the disease, especially in rural areas. It also advocates the need for relevant health authorities to enforce healthier public environmental practices and initiate mastomys eradication programmes to reduce the presence of rats in residential areas.

The spate of youths’ political apathy in Nigeria remains a constant source of worry to stakeholders. Nevertheless, efforts to stem the tide have been largely unsuccessful. Studies indicate that many youths rely on newspapers and other mass media for political information, and such reliance may influence their general political behaviour. This study examines the influence of newspaper reports on the extent of political apathy among young people in Southeast Nigeria using a sample of 384 respondents selected through a multistage sampling technique. It also evaluates the roles played by political efficacy and news perception in youths’ extent of political involvement. Findings show that obtaining political news from newspaper is positively associated with an increased feeling of political efficacy (rs(379) = .567**, p =

The aim of this study is to investigate the presentation of 2010 and 2011 World Wrestling Championships, World Basketball Championships and European Basketball Championships in the media. It also investigates the effects of places in which the championship is organized and the other factors. For this reason, Hürriyet, Habertürk, Sabah, Fanatik and Fotomaç newspapers are analyzed based on the content analysis. This study is of great importance for the relationship between the press and sports, the role and function of press in the organization of domestic and abroad championships. It is also important for media and sports organizations, as well as players. In this study it has been determined that there is a quite difference between wrestling and basketball sports as quantitatively. This difference continued in 2011, but these differences are relatively low as compared to the previous year. As a result, the sport championships reflected in the news media are considered to be effective in increasing the popularity of the championships and their organizations in domestic and abroad.

DOI: 10.21276/sjahss.2018.6.4.2 Abstract: A key responsibility of the state that cannot be devolved to non-state actors is the protection of the lives and properties of the elements of the state such as population and territory. In fulfilling this tasking responsibility, the state explores all necessary tools especially when groups such as BHT challenge its monopoly to the use of force and threatens to erode national security. The FG in response to this set up a National Information Centre to communicate it efforts in the COIN operation in NE Nigeria, which includes using the media as tools to counter violent narratives, enhanced conflict sensitive reportage, denying access to, and effectively containing the deployment of media platform by BHT to weaken national security in the NE Nigeria. However, these efforts have been hampered by several challenges and have prolonged the COIN in the NE. The current practice that subsumes media for national security under the Office of the Nation...

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has brought about a significant impact on all aspects of life, including the media industry. This work focused on South-East Nigeria newspapers’ readers’ perception of the Covid-19 pandemic, based on the coverage by The Guardian, Vanguard, and The Sun newspapers. The period under study in the research was from January 2020 to September 2020, The main objective was to find out how readers of newspapers in South-East, Nigeria perceived the news and the effects of the virus. A wide range of conceptual and empirical literature was reviewed with the social cognitive theory and media framing theory used as anchorage to the study. The survey research design was used. The population of the study was 667, 500 while ths sample size was 384. The study revealed the high rate of respondents’ frequency of exposure to Covid-19 reports in the selected newspapers. The result also showed that the newspapers’ readers had a generally high level of understanding of the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, it was discovered that the extent newspapers reported the pandemic helped inform the readers about the
disease and how to prevent its spread. Amongst others, it was recommended that the Nigerian government and media organisations

The Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) who define waste as: "materials that are not prime products for which the generator has no further use in terms of his/her own purposes of production, transformation or consumption, and of which he/she wants to dispose". (OECD, 2003). There is a lack of organization and planning on waste management, due to insufficient information about regulations. One Of the greatest environmental challenges facing Nigeria is unhealthy disposal of waste which result from human activities of development and survival it is a problem recognized by all nations, in Nigeria the problem of waste management has been a concern which has existed for a long time, waste management is one of the important obligatory functions of local government area (LGA's) in the entire country (longe, long and ukeebor , 2009:210) ,and has emerged one of the greatest challenge facing state and local government enrollment protection agencies(ogwueleka 2009:173). Ajayan and saharsh (2003:1) observed that lack of financial resources, institutional weakness, improper selection of technology, transportation systems and disposal options, public's apathy towards environmental cleanliness and sanitation has made this service unsatisfactory. Fly breeding occurs as a result of uncovered piles of rotting refuse and the flies may play a role in faecal-oral diseases. The anopheles mosquitoes will survive these conditions and may transmit malaria, yellow fever, e.t.c.

Since the corona virus disease broke out in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China in 2019, the world has known no peace in terms of global health. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a new lifestyle of wearing facemask called the 'new normal'. The media particularly newspapers have been fighting this global pandemic through different reports such as straight news, features, opinions and cartoons among others. However, newspapers seem not to be doing enough in this war in their editorials. The above dictated this study which examined how Nigerian newspapers framed the second wave of COVID-19 in their editorials. Using qualitative research method, the study analysed contents of the published editorials of selected newspapers on the second wave of COVID-19 in Nigeria. Data analysed were presented in simple statistics while hypotheses raised were tested using Chi-square Statistical Technique. The study found that Vanguard and Punch newspapers (the selected newspapers) published very few editorials (poor frequency) on the second phase of the pandemic in Nigeria despite the deadly effects of the disease. The study also revealed 13 types of frames (content categories of frame) in the editorials published on the second upsurge of the pandemic in Nigeria by the selected newspapers. The study thereafter recommended among others that Nigerian newspapers should publish more editorials on COVID-19 because doing so would mean that they (Nigerian newspapers) consider corona virus real threat. Also, doing so will provide adequate information about managing and defeating the pandemic.

In the sphere of journalism, child right issues are perennial issues that have raised mixed feelings and reactions among media experts and scholars. The thrust of this paper examined the use of development journalism to promote media advocacy for child right issues in Nigeria. Against the backdrop of development media theory and the agenda setting theory, which moves that child right issues are developmental issues that demand adequate attention from the media, it become expedient that media reports on child right issues should be treated as issues of national interest in newspapers, magazines, radio station and television station. It was recommended that child right issues such as early child marriages, child labour and child trafficking should be reported and analyzed in the Nigerian mass media; individuals that perpetuate such crimes should be punished and deterred from further acts.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipteki araştırma 13-17 Mart 2017 tarihleri arasında Hacettepe Üniversitesi Sıhhiye Yerleşkesi Erişkin Hastanesi ve Sağlık Bilimleri Kütüphanesi giriş kapısı önünde 4415 kişi üzerinde gözlem tekniği kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Araştırma için kurumdan yazılı resmi izin alınmıştır. Verilerin analizi SPSS 15.0 istatistiksel paket programı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırma süresi boyunca gözlenen kişilerin %31,9'u kadın, %68,1'i erkektir. Gözlenen kişilerin %13,7'si sağlık personelidir. Gözlenen kişilerin %35,5'inin sigarasız alan içinde, %64,5'inin ise sigarasız alan dışında tütün kullandığı saptanmıştır. Hastane önünde tütün kullananların %21,9'u sigarasız alan içinde, kütüphane önünde tütün kullananların %80,8'i sigarasız alan içinde gözlenmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Sigarasız açık alan, pasif etkilenim, hastane, kütüphane ABSTRACT Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate compliance with the regulation of tobacco free zones by observing people smoking outside of the library and the adult hospital both inside the campus of a university hospital.

Lassa fever is a serious infectious disease that has eluded total eradication in Nigeria. The disease affects about 21% of the country’s over 200 million population and currently has no preventive vaccines; hence, health stakeholders have continuously used the mass media as independent and complementary intervention tools to educate the public and create appropriate awareness on the best preventive protocol for the disease. This study examined the influence of public exposure to mass media sensitisation messages on Lassa fever-related knowledge, attitudes and practices among residents of eight rural communities in South-South Nigeria. It used a survey questionnaire to collect data from 384 respondents selected through multistage sampling. After controlling for confounding variables, the results of the hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that increased exposure to mass media messages on Lassa fever prevention was significantly associated with higher knowledge ( = .609) ...

Lassa fever is a recurrent endemic disease in Nigeria with increasing seroprevalence in many parts of the country. In the absence of effective preventive vaccines, the mass media are being deployed as independent and complementary interventions to sensitise the public on appropriate measures for mitigating the spread of the disease. This study evaluates the different coverage patterns and frames that dominate newspaper narratives on Lassa fever epidemic in Nigeria. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 420 editions of six leading Nigerian newspapers published between January 2015 and December 2019. Findings showed that although the epidemic was frequently mentioned in newspaper articles, its coverage was mainly episodic with little media prominence, and its framing was too inadequate to compel the desired public health response. Hence, the study recommends that journalists and newspaper editors must dutifully engage in the publication of Lassa fever outbreak preparedness ...

This study investigates the opinions of Rhodes Must Fall from the perspective of various members of the UCT community. Violence has been a term used to describe the tactics used in protests during the Fallist movement. I argue against condemning the students based on this reasoning, citing Fanon, Robins, among others. Through six interviews and observations, I gathered different narratives and accounts of the Fallist events at UCT. This study includes perspectives from activists involved in the Fallist movement, other forms of activism, and some who oppose the movement as a whole.

This article takes its departure point from the fact that the VIADUCT 2015 platform overlapped chronologically with the "Rhodes Must Fall" campaign at the University of Cape Town (UCT). I ask whether bringing some of the archival theory that was discussed and applied at the platform to bear on an analysis of the campaign against the statue of Rhodes at UCT-in conjunction with the existing literature around monuments-is helpful in deepening understandings of the campaign. After singling out some of the most interesting literature on monuments and monumental iconoclasm, I explore the ways in which Derridean and Foucauldian inspired readings of the archive might be applied to the colonial memorial landscape. I propose that the campaign was sustained both by a substantial archive of iconoclasm, and that the protesters consciously tried to extend and elaborate on the archive/counter-archive.

Speeches made to cast aspersions on political affiliations and ideologies as well as on religious faiths, heavily affect the political beliefs, participation and reactions of the people concerned to the happenings within the sociopolitical arena. Comments made on religion, like those on politics, have a high propensity to either make or mar the entire political well-being or otherwise of the country. How religious groups react deliberately or spontaneously to speeches against their faiths, and how such reactions affect the political stability of a country like Nigeria, is what this paper seeks to explore. In this paper that uses the library research method to make an incursion into the subject of hate speech and political stability, works of other scholars in the area are examined and the researcher‟s position is situated within the raging discou...

Civil society organizations (CSOs) adopt and use digital media in various ways, which brings substantial changes in civic participation and social movement, particularly in terms of how these CSOs engage young people to involve in activism. This article explores some of the opportunities and challenges of digital media utilization for youth activism in Indonesia. The author argues that there are still a few CSOs which consistently produce and spread digital content on youth-based empowerment and activism. Also, although the number of Internet users in Indonesia continues to increase every year, the potential use of digital media for activism is still constrained by digital divide. Furthermore, it can be said that many young people in Indonesia become apolitical or easily lured by identity politics, intolerance and radicalism which spread through digital media. Therefore, a counter-narrative that promotes progressive ideas for young people in a more creative way is necessary. Studies on digitally-enabled social movement and activism in Indonesia have brought many scholarly attention, yet, there are still a few studies which specifically focused on youth activism. Hence, this study tries to fill the gap on the ongoing research related to digital activism in Indonesia.

My first day of fieldwork was spent driving around Khayelitsha in a minibus taxi, as local pop songs blasted from the speakers. The six high school students in the van danced and sang along. Out the window, street scenes flashed by us, as we made our way to the offices of the social movement Equal Education located in Kwezi Park2. Founded in 2008, E.E advocates for improved education standards in South Africa. It is a social movement comprised of learners, parents, teachers and community members working for quality and equality in education. For five weeks I worked with these six black3 students, referred to as Equalisers, who are aged between 16-20. They are part of E.E’s media advocacy project called Amawzi Wethu (A.W) - our voices4. There were five girls Amanda, Sisanda, Lorna, Kedibone, Phelokazi and one boy Siphonathi nicknamed ‘Chief’. They came from different schools and met through their involvement in A.W. The program focused on teaching them how to make media content for E.E’s campaigns. The aim was for the content to serve as a tool for advocacy, amplifying the voice of the youth led social movement.
Khayelitsha is an informal settlement, which means ‘new home’ in isiXhosa. Established by the Apartheid government in 1983, it is roughly 30km from the city of Cape Town. The 2011 Census figures reflected a population of 400 000, 40% of whom are under 20 years of age5. South Africa’s cities face massive challenges, largely due to Apartheid urban planning design. Informal settlements are growing, and infrastructure backlogs are widespread. The 1990s saw an influx of people from the Eastern Cape seeking employment opportunities, yet fifty percent of the population is unemployed6. Electricity ‘nyonga’7 wires crisscross the skyline. These ‘borrowed’ lines provide unstable power for many residents who live in small informal dwellings that locals call

shacks. Provision of services such as water, sanitation, and electricity feature strongly in local struggles for access to public services. However, Khayelitsha’s housing is not completely ‘informal’. There are mortar and brick homes with shiny new cars parked behind security gates. The area faces difficulties with infrastructure and crime, but is also filled with aspiring and vibrant communities, and is the place the students I worked with all call home.
In this dissertation, I seek to understand how a youth media discourse is evidenced in specific localities. Critical enquiry into the way ‘empowerment’ and ‘agency’ manifest themselves is explored. There is a limitation embedded in a framework that installs empowerment as the end goal. It tends to position individuals as key agents of change in the face of broader structural inequalities. There is a relative short supply of scholarship about media advocacy projects, that focuses on the perspective of the youth involved8. In resource-poor communities young people face limited access to platforms of self- expression. Most of the largely under resourced high schools in Khayelitsha do not offer creative subjects and there are limited extramural opportunities available9. The process of telling stories creates a space to develop a perception of the self in relation to a wider audience. This can allow for cathartic expression, particularly in a difficult environment where levels of violence are incredibly high. Many young people feel that they are not listened to by their elders, nor are their opinions reflected in the mainstream media.
George Marcus speaks of the “activist imaginary” to express how marginalized groups use media to make new claims of citizenship10. Social agents navigate the opportunities available, scrambling for platforms that allow for forms of inclusion to be realized. Youth media programs become important in engaging individual’s strengths, developing their self-confidence that creates a space to dream and exercise social mobility. The social movement utilizes particular activist strategies in order to harness collective mobilization. Individual voices and the films they make, stand in for the wider movement in order for them to be used as advocacy tools.

Within this dynamic I am interested in how a balance between the individual and the collective is carefully navigated. My basic research question follows:
“What are the activist imaginaries of young social actors in an ‘informal settlement’ and what kind of expressive platforms do they access within the social space that they navigate?”

In this chapter we draw from recent ethnographic and archival research in Indonesia to explore how digital activists in that country translate or 'modulate' (Kelty 2008) key digital issues – which are sometimes highly technical and abstract – to reach diverse publics, often with remarkable success. We argue that Indonesia's digital activists have developed an effective pedagogical folksonomy in which three particular digital personas stand out, namely victims (korban), volunteers (relawan) and voices (suara) of the digital age. Each of these complexly mediated personas is endowed with unique attributes and located within a specific corner of Indonesia's digital activism space, and each is integral to efforts to educate diverse publics about the digital issues at stake. These three 'digital keywords' (Peters 2016) may seem both familiar and mundane, but we suggest that the work of personification that they enable has significant consequences for the framing of ongoing civil society struggles in post-Suharto Indonesia. We conclude that whether a certain individual or group is labelled a digital 'victim', 'voice' or 'volunteer' makes a difference to the evolution and eventual outcome of a given techno-political contention.

In health communication research studies, there have been various qualitative and quantitative studies on breast cancer. However, there is paucity of research investigations on the influence of information sources used in media awareness campaigns on breast cancer care among women in Nigeria. This study, therefore, investigated the influence of media awareness campaigns on breast cancer care among women in SouthWest Nigeria. This study was anchored on two theories: agenda setting theory and diffusion of innovation theory. It employed survey design, which made use of the questionnaire to achieve the objectives of the study. The total number of subjects examined in this study was 600 questionnaire respondents. The multi-stage sampling and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the questionnaire respondents in Lagos, Oyo and Ekiti States. Three hypotheses were tested using cross tabulation and correlation analysis to determine the strength, nature and direction between variables. The findings revealed that the majority of the respondents (98.8%) were aware of breast cancer but many of these respondents were not sufficiently knowledgeable of the disease. It also reveals that information sources such as mass media and interpersonal channels are crucial health communication carriers for breast cancer interventions. It was suggested that mass media messages should be incorporated as key machineries in media awareness campaigns for improving breast cancer care among women. This is essential because mass media messages can produce positive changes or prevent negative changes in health-related behaviours of women in SouthWest Nigeria.

For many years, mathematics has been conceived as abstract, a product of western values and divorced from people's everyday lives. This has contributed to the fact that rural and economically disadvantaged communities fail to see the link between school mathematics and their real world experiences. Nonetheless, it goes without question that children tirelessly engage in plays and games at the least available opportunity, and rural communities have well-knitted and immortal cultural activities which possess intricate and diverse mathematical concepts. Herein we report on some of the cultural activities and plays for the Balobedu people of South Africa and their implications for mathematics teaching and learning at primary school level. The researchers have seen the interplay of culture and the development of mathematical concepts worthy studying, as a way of bringing a turnaround in the performance of mathematics in the South African primary schools. Mathematics performance currently is trailing all other subjects of the curriculum, yet it is a key area of knowledge whose competence is necessary for individual and economic development in this modern high-tech world we are living in. Incorporating cultural issues in the methods of teaching in rural areas help learners to perceive that mathematical concepts are not done in isolation, but have a strong connection to their everyday life and therefore worthwhile learning.
