This investigation presents a synthesis of two multicriteria analysis methods, Rough Set Method (RSM) and Net Flow Method (NFM), applied to the multicriteria optimisation for the manufacture of paper using jack pine as the source of fibres. This work is the result of a collaboration between different Canadian and French laboratories. The two optimisation methods, based on different approaches, are applied to the same Pareto domain of non-dominated operating conditions. The Rough Set Method (RSM) uses a set of decision rules that are based on the preferences of experts, when presented with a small set of diverse conditions extracted from the Pareto domain. These rules are then applied to the entire Pareto domain to determine the preferred zone of operation. In the Net Flow Method (NFM), the preferences of experts are defined with three threshold values and one set of weights that are used to classify the entire Pareto domain. The NFM is a hybrid of two methods between ELECTRE and PROMETHEE. To compare these two methods, they were used to optimise the identical process. Results clearly show that the two methods gave nearly identical optimal solutions and well within inherent experimental errors.

Quality is an important aspect of software development. This is the reason some researchers and practitioners have attempted to integrate TQM concepts into software engineering. Total Data Quality Management (TDQM) methodology claims that we should manage data as we manage products, but principles, guidelines, and techniques of Total Quality Management for physical products have limitations in TDQM practices because of the nature of data. In our research we have studied about 22 research papers in which different strategies, issues of TQM challenges and how to overcome these challenges are discussed.

COMPRESSION ARTIFACT REMOVAL IN HEVC USING ADAPTIVE BILATERAL FILTER Rohith Reddy Etikala, M.S. The University of Texas at Arlington Supervising Professor: Dr. K. R. Rao The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) [8] is the latest video standard developed by Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC), a group of video coding experts from ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). As the demand for HD video (4K and 8K) increased, there is a need for higher coding efficiency than H.264/AVC. Also, there is increased use of parallel processors. So, HEVC [8] has been introduced to support increased video resolution and parallel processing. HEVC obtains about 50% reduction in bit rate when compared to its predecessor H.264/AVC at the same visual quality. All these modern coding standards use block based transforms and coarse quantization to save video bandwidth over a channel by achieving compression. Though HEVC employs in-loop filters such as d...

Electronic media resources, including websites which occupy a leading niche, have a much shorter history than printed equivalents of means of communication between users. However, their focus on computers, electronic devices and software, and, in particular, the Internet has caused a rapid development of the technical and software component of this industry on one hand, and a rapid growth of active users, reaching several billion on the other hand. Global and relatively short-time distribution of sites, as well the subjective preferences of their developers, generates significant problems of a high-quality nature. Considering the above mentioned, the presented article has revealed the essence of the information approach to the development of the alternatives and finding the optimal options for high-quality website design, implemented on the basis of considering the prevailing influence of Pareto set factors. The theoretical basis of the research was the method of hierarchies' analysis, multi-attribute utility theory and multi-objective optimization.

This research highlights the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) critical success
factors (CSFs) literature’s strengths and weaknesses, generates a unified list of the LSS CSFs, and proposes future research agenda. The research methodology used encompasses three stages. First, a systematic literature review (SLR) was used to extract and analyse the literature’s strengths and weaknesses and propose future research agendas. Second, the focus group discussions approach was used to generate a unified list of the LSS CSFs. Third, two layers of Pareto analysis were used to extract the vital few and useful many of the LSS CSFs. A list of 37 CSFs that represent the unified list of the LSS CSFs was generated.
Then, the vital few and useful many CSFs were extracted from the 37 LSS
CSFs. The top three LSS CSFs were management involvement and leadership, training and education, and LSS approach integration in business strategy.

An important role of system designers is to effectively explore the tradespace of alternatives when making design decisions during concept phase. As systems become more complex, formal methods to enable good design decisions are essential; this can be empowered through a tradespace exploration paradigm. This paper demonstrates the use of the Pareto Trace and associated metrics to identify system alternatives across tradespaces with high degrees of passive value robustness-alternatives that continue to deliver value to stakeholders in spite of changes in needs (attributes) or context. A value-driven tradespace approach is used to represent the baseline performance versus cost of a large number of system alternatives. The classical notion of Pareto Set is extended to identify alternatives and their characteristics that lead to their inclusion in Pareto Sets across changing contexts. Using a lowearth orbiting satellite case example, five types of context changes are used to demonstrate this method: 1) addition or subtraction of attributes; 2) change in the priorities of attributes; 3) change in single attribute utility function shapes; 4) change in multiattribute utility aggregation function; and 5) addition of new decision maker. This approach demonstrates the ability for system designers to pose questions about assessment of alternatives during early conceptual design. Suggestions for application of Pareto Trace beyond the case example are discussed and presented, including application of a "fuzziness" factor and statistical measures. In particular, distinctions from traditional sensitivity analysis are made, as well as linkages to dynamic analysis for discovery of generalized value robust alternatives.

Now-a-day's many leading manufacturing industry have started to practice Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing concepts to boost up their productivity as well as quality of products. In this paper, the Six Sigma approach has been used to reduce process variability of a food processing industry in Bangladesh. DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, & Control) model has been used to implement the Six Sigma Philosophy. Five phases of the model have been structured step by step respectively. Different tools of Total Quality Management, Statistical Quality Control and Lean Manufacturing concepts likely Quality function deployment, P Control chart, Fish-bone diagram, Analytical Hierarchy Process, Pareto analysis have been used in different phases of the DMAIC model. The process variability have been tried to reduce by identify the root cause of defects and reducing it. The ultimate goal of this study is to make the process lean and increase the level of sigma.

In this correspondence, we study the achievable rate region of the multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel, under the assumption that all receivers treat the interference as additive Gaussian noise. Our main result is an explicit parametrization of the Pareto boundary for an arbitrary number of users and antennas. The parametrization describes the boundary in terms of a low-dimensional manifold. For the two-user case we show that a single real-valued parameter per user is sufficient to achieve all points on the Pareto boundary and that any point on the Pareto boundary corresponds to beamforming vectors that are linear combinations of the zero-forcing (ZF) and maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) beamformers. We further specialize the results to the MISO broadcast channel (BC). A numerical example illustrates the result.

International regulatory authorities view risk management as an essential production need for the development of innovative, somatic cell-based therapies in regenerative medicine. The available risk management guidelines, however, provide little guidance on specific risk analysis approaches and procedures applicable in clinical cell therapy manufacturing. This raises a number of problems. Cell manufacturing is a poorly automated process, prone to operator-introduced variations, and affected by heterogeneity of the processed organs/tissues and lot-dependent variability of reagent (e.g., collagenase) efficiency. In this study, the principal challenges faced in a cell-based product manufacturing context (i.e., high dependence on human intervention and absence of reference standards for acceptable risk levels) are identified and addressed, and a risk management model approach applicable to manufacturing of cells for clinical use is described for the first time. The use of the heuristic and pseudoquantitative failure mode and effect analysis/failure mode and critical effect analysis risk analysis technique associated with direct estimation of severity, occurrence, and detection is, in this specific context, as effective as, but more efficient than, the analytic hierarchy process. Moreover, a severity/occurrence matrix and Pareto analysis can be successfully adopted to identify priority failure modes on which to act to mitigate risks. The application of this approach to clinical cell therapy manufacturing in regenerative medicine is also discussed.

The study aims to analyse warehouse value-added services (VAS) data for a third-party logistics (3PL) service provider, which leads to identifying service improvements and cost-cutting opportunities in performing VAS for clients using Pareto analysis as a quality tool. Using a case study approach, qualitative and quantitative data were collected from a leading 3PL firm in Belgium. The approach is conducted by applying major steps of Pareto analysis. Two pharmaceutical products were analysed according to medical general classification, namely narcotic analgesics (NA) and ophthalmic antihistamines and decongestants (OAD). The results showed that the Pareto principle is proven in the NA—ticketing case, and five activities consumed 83.3 percent of the total time of VAS operations. Furthermore, in the OAD—display case, the Pareto principle is proven and six activities were validated as they accounted for 81.26 percent of the total time of primary VAS operations. The study recommended a s...

In recent times the approach to health care has been mostly influenced by the growing quantity of biomedical equipment used in hospitals, which needs the support of the clinical engineering service (CES). This work aims to suggest a methodology to improve the performance of a CES through the application of Pareto principle to the leading Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The methodology is applied by focusing on using KPIs that represent a quantifiable measure of achieving goals set by an organization. In this study, five KPIs are considered: Uptime, MTTR (mean time to repair), PPM (percentage preventive maintenance completion), MTBF (mean time between failures), and the COSR (cost of service ratio). The first three indicators express the measure of CES efficiency in ensuring regular maintenance. The first step consists of retrieving data related to work orders for 2015-2016 on 6000 installed devices, carried out by management software. The second step is to get the results by using an environment for numerical calculation and statistical analysis. To identify the main critical issues that may be present, three indicators (Uptime, MTTR and MTBF) are analyzed by applying the Pareto principle (i.e., 20% of the causes produce 80% of the effects). Considering the totality of work orders, it is possible to concentrate on only 20% of them to focus on a small group to understand the correlations between them. Identifying these characteristics means identifying the main critical issues that are present, on which action must be taken, and which affect 80% of the overall behavior. Instead, the COSR and PPM indicators suggest distribution models that focus on the most critical devices. In conclusion, the way to analyze the results is obtained, when possible, by applying Pareto principle. Therefore, a CES will be able to focus on a few causes of poor performance. The achievement of these results could allow the standardization of the method used, enabling it to be applied to any healthcare system.

This study explores the application of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) using FlexSim software to enhance the operational efficiency of a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant. The primary goal is to ensure that the LPG plant can safely and efficiently meet escalating market demands, thereby prioritising all stakeholders' safety. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research design focused on empirical research and experimental simulation modelling. The study began with collecting and analysing one month of LPG plant data, laying the foundation for developing a simulation model. Verification and validation processes ensured the model's accuracy, enabling the investigation of various operational scenarios. The key performance indicators like First Time to Failure (FTTF), Time Between Failures (TBF), and Time to Repair (TTR) were analysed. The availability rates were 77% from actual data and 76% from simulations, showing that the model is suitable for real-world use. Findings: This study's findings underscore the potential impact of proactive maintenance strategies and operational enhancements as practical and applicable approaches to optimising performance. The analysis also revealed significant improvement opportunities through what-if scenarios: increasing MTBF by 100%, reducing MTTR by 50%, and raising conveyor speed by 15%. Research Limitation: The study's dependence on a systematic literature review could restrict its ability to capture the industry's real-time dynamics. Practical Implication: Implementing proactive maintenance strategies and operational enhancements as practical approaches can reduce downtime and costs and promote productivity and safety. Social Implication: Optimising plant operations will help maintain supply chain stability with the growing demand for LPG. Originality/Value: This work contributes valuable insights and recommendations, establishing a foundation for informed decision-making in the LPG bottling sector.

The allocation of limited funds to competing activities is a well-known problem in economics and finance. Current modelling approaches for this problem are application specific and mathematically complex. This paper introduces a straightforward modelling approach based on a coloured-edge chain graph. The approach elicits a set of Pareto efficient allocations whose cardinality is theoretically studied. Additionally, the applicability of the model is illustrated through a case-study based on the chilean pension system. We conclude that despite intractability, the approach can tackle problem in practice since worst-case instances are unlikely to occur.

The purpose of this paper is to obtain a set of critical success factors (CSFs) for selecting building contractors in Qatar to help investors effectively and efficiently build their houses. First, a systematic review of the previous research was carried out to capture the 20 most frequently occurring CSFs for constructing houses. Then, a survey was distributed to 280 investors to determine their perceptions of the importance of CSFs. The survey was evaluated using Pareto analysis and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to determine which CSFs are most relevant to investors when building houses. The contribution of this study to the current knowledge is studying the investor’s behavior by considering frequency, cost, and time components simultaneously to capture the most significant Critical Success Factors (CSFs) in selecting building contractors. The strategy developed by this study provides a ready set of criteria that can be used by investors and local authorities in qualifyin...

Despite the extensive application of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) to solve multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs), understanding their working principles is still open to research. One of the most popular and successful MOEA approaches is based on Pareto dominance and its relaxed version, Pareto εdominance. However, such approaches have not been sufficiently studied in problems of increased complexity. In this work, we study the effects of the working mechanisms of the various components of these algorithms on test problems with difficult Pareto set topologies. We focus on separable unimodal and multimodal functions with 2, 3, and 4 objectives, all having difficult Pareto set topologies. Our experimental study provides some interesting and useful insights to understand better Pareto dominance-based MOEAs.

This paper investigates the adsorptive removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution over commercial powdered activated carbon (PAC) and carries optimisation of removal efficiency for the process using response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of different parameters such as pH, initial Cr (VI) concentration, adsorbent dose, contact time and temperature on adsorption were studied to find the best operating conditions. This study showed that when initial concentration was 50 ppm, 100% Cr (VI) removal was possible with pH 2 and 2 g L −1 PAC concentration. Different adsorption kinetic models and isotherms were compared respectively with the proposed kinetic model based on liquid phase adsorbate concentration and the developed new three-parameter isotherm. The new isotherm supported the experimental results with a better accuracy. The main process parameters considered for optimisation were pH, adsorbent dose and adsorption time. The experimental was designed according to central composite rotatable design (CCRD) and second order regression model was developed for regression analysis and ANOVA study. The optimum pH, PAC dose and time were found to be 2.32, 1.79 g L −1 and 25.76 min. Pareto analysis established that PAC dose was the most influential parameter.

Adsorption over TiO 2 is used efficiently for reactive dyes removal from wastewater. This paper investigates adsorption efficiency for Reactive Red 198 (RR198) removal over TiO 2 adsorbent using response surface methodology. The main process parameters considered for optimisation were pH, adsorbent dose, and adsorption time. The experimental scheme was designed according to central composite rotatable design and second order regression model was developed. For regression analysis and ANOVA study, software MINITAB 15 was used. The optimum pH, TiO 2 dose, and time were found to be 4.3, 4.3 g L −1 , and 32.42 min, respectively. Complete removal was observed. Pareto analysis established pH the most influential parameter. On a observé uneélimination complète.

The study aimed in identifying Green supply chain critical success factors, develop and validate the framework through integrated approach of ISM, MICMAC and SEM so as to promote green practices throughout the supply chain activities in Indian manufacturing sectors. Interpretive structural modelling(ISM) is applied to develop hierarchical contextual relationship among identified critical success factors via Pareto analysis. The methodology then follows classification of success factors into four clusters by Matrice d' Impacts Croisés-Multiplication Appliquée á un Classement (MICMAC) and statistical validation of the ISM model through Structural Equation Modelling(SEM) by AMOS. In this study, 16 critical success factors of Green supply chain practices for manufacturing industries were identified, followed by development of an ISM model using 16 critical success factors, later the model was statistically verified that identified nine CSF's responsible for generating SEM model by satisfying all the model fit indices. The linkage variables identified are Green manufacturing, Green Procurement, Green marketing and Distribution, Green purchasing, Supplier cooperation, Customer cooperation, Environmental strategies and management, Environmental Participation and Green training that are forming the driving force for practicing green supply chain. Research limitations/implications: The results of the study are restricted to manufacturing industries, which might vary when applied for other sectors. The developed model on green supply chain management practices would help policy makers, decision makers, researchers and industry professionals to anticipate potential success factors to implement green supply chain practices. Accordingly, the focus on critical success factors would be prioritized for obtaining better performance of supply chain and greening the chain.

In this study for the first time, weight and critical buckling load in two kinds of functionally graded (FG) circular plates, namely, aluminum-alumina of (Al/Al 2 O 3) and aluminum-zirconia (Al/ZnO 2), are optimized using multi-objective Pareto archived simulated annealing algorithm (PASA). Material properties are assumed to vary with the power law in terms of the volume fractions of the constituent in two forms of symmetric and asymmetric with respect to the middle surface. The plate is subjected to uniform radial load and is considered for two boundary conditions, namely, simply supported and clamped edges. Aim at obtaining the Pareto archive is to achieve simultaneously the maximum buckling and the minimum weight concerning with proposed constraints. The parameters include the radius, thickness and volume fraction that the certain range is intended individually. The constraints are presented in form of the ratio of thickness to radius in category of the thin plates as well as the critical buckling stress being in the elastic range. Proposed simulated annealing algorithm is coded in MATLAB to obtain optimal non-dominated solution.

Pará has one of the largest mineral reserves in the world, establishing itself as one of the main producers and exporters in this segment. With the resumption of investments in the sector and due to the need to transport ores over long distances, it is observed that the use of conveyor belts in the mining and metallurgical sector has been an appropriate solution for moving large volumes of material, reducing truck traffic. and the cost of this type of service, which has a production capacity of an average of 430 tons per month. Therefore, with this information in mind, a case study was carried out in a conveyor belt
manufacturing industry, with the aim of using Industrial Production Management tools to increase productivity and reduce the rate of downtime due to equipment breakdown. With these tools in use, it was possible to identify, analyze and apply improvements to the main equipment in the production process, such as the implementation of the
preventive maintenance plan, mapping of critical equipment, development of new components and suppliers, resulting in an increase in reliability of operation (23 hours) which was previously from 12.53% to 139.05%, the increase in Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) from 37.73 hours to 87.71 hours, with cost reduction and elimination of waste and reworks.

In most instances, the construction client allocates risk by selecting the methods for procurement, payment and the contract form. Nevertheless, how favourably the contractor views the risk allocation has a bearing on the project outcome. This research identifies the pertinent risks in the Zambian context and establishes how they are allocated in terms of types of contract clauses used and response mechanisms employed. A mixed-sequential approach was followed, comprising 15 semi-structured interviews, 198 questionnaire-survey respondents and document analysis (eight projects using various standard forms of contract). The respondents comprised of clients, consultants and contractors involved on medium-to-large-scale building projects. Findings show the pertinent risks in the industry were due to shortcomings of the design team and clients' shirking. Using a Pareto analysis, a pervasive propensity was found for passive risk acceptance and wanton risk transfer by the client. Modifications were found, aimed at negating the clients' responsibility for risk. The originality of this research lies in its methodological approach and its focus on how risks are allocated. Findings can help practitioners to better allocate risk and promote the achievement of desired project outcomes through careful selection and utilization of mechanisms, allocation of risk and use of contract clauses.

Multiobjective design optimization studies typically derive Pareto sets or use a scalar substitute function to capture design trade-offs, leaving it up to the designer’s intuition to use this information for design refinements and decision-making. Understanding the causality of trade-offs more deeply, beyond simple postoptimality parametric studies, would be particularly valuable in configuration design problems to guide configuration redesign. This article presents the method of multiobjective monotonicity analysis to identify root causes for the existence of trade-offs and the particular shape of Pareto sets. This analysis process involves reducing optimization models through constraint activity identification to a point where dependencies specific to the Pareto set and the constraints that cause them are revealed. The insights gained can then be used to target configuration design changes. We demonstrate the proposed approach in the preliminary design of a medical device for oral...

Purpose-Six Sigma includes traditional tools that are usually difficult to give a full understanding of the manufacturing data. Data mining is usefully applied in industries; some algorithms generate significant information to serve the industrial fields. Data mining algorithms enhanced DMAIC to extract relevant knowledge about the process. Design/methodology/approach-In the defining step, three weeks were spent outlining the main problems by studying and evaluating the job shop processes. Data were collected during the measuring step to evaluate the baseline process and build a reliable plan to make the change in the process. In analyzing, two data mining algorithms were applied to analyze and select the most important predictors. Worker efficiency was evaluated carefully to be applied as output in the dataset; 12 technical variables were carefully screened and filtered from huge datasets to extract significant relationships. In the improving step, the results have been applied to make the changes by adding lean principles and agile projects. Finally, five months waited to get the impact on business, so this was confirmed by the management in the control step. Findings-The productivity of the weaving department has improved from 58% to 92%, lead time has been reduced from an average of 35 days to an average of 20 days, and the capability process has improved from 0.77 to 1.7. Originality/value-The value lies in the systematic approach to problem-solving, the use of statistical methods to analyze data, and the application of scientific principles to improve the processes.

In sand casting, the design of gating and riser system plays an important role in the quality of the casting. Poor designs of these two parameters lead to major defects such as incomplete filling, porosity, and re-oxidation inclusions. These defects cause the castings to be susceptible to failure during their use. A riser system with high volume to surface area ratio gives a sound casting. The conventional casting setup used in many foundries incorporates the use of cylindrical risers. Improvement of the gating and riser system by use of computational analysis was carried out. Through several computational analyses, it was concluded that a casting with minimal defects could be obtained by modifying a cylindrical riser to form a tapered riser which has a higher volume to surface area ratio. Keywords -Casting defects, Chvorinov's rule, cylindrical riser, hydraulic principles, tapered riser
