I like to think like a scriptural detective. I probe the clues left in gospels to see if some truth is hidden from us. At the same time, I search for other writings that offer information different from what we find in the gospels. One of them is the Nag Hammadi scrolls. Around the time Irenaeus was attacking the heresies, certain gnostic writers were composing works later discovered in 1945 at a location in Egypt known as Nag Hammadi. In these ancient scrolls was a particular text entitled Second Treatise of the Great Seth that contained a passage wherein Jesus was the purported narrator, casting much of the crucifixion tale into doubt. "For my death, which they think happened, (happened) to them in their error and blindness, since they nailed their man unto their death. It was another, their father, who drank the gall and the vinegar, it was not I. They struck me with the reed: it was another, Simon, who bore the cross on his shoulder. I[t] was another upon whom they placed the crown of thorns. And I was laughing at their ignorance." The implication is clear. Whether the details are accurate or not, the claim is that Jesus did not die by crucifixion as told in the second century. The belief that Jesus did not die on the cross known to Irenaeus was also known in the desert regions of Egypt, indicating that the story was known to many and in many distant places.

Artykuł dotyczy grupy ośmiu zaginionych obiektów starożytnych, które najprawdopodobniej zostały sfotografowane w Pałacu w Wilanowie w latach czterdziestych XX wieku. Zabytki te niemal na pewno wchodziły w skład dawnej kolekcji sztuki starożytnej, której część jest do dnia dzisiejszego zachowana w zbiorach Muzeum Pałacu Króla Jana III w Wilanowie. Wśród zaginionych obiektów znajdowały się figurki wykonane z kamienia, brązu oraz prawdopodobnie fajansu. Fotografie zaginionych zabytków, zachowane w zbiorach archiwalnych Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie nie zostały jak dotąd opublikowane. Zabytki na nich uwiecznione zostały po raz pierwszy szczegółowo omówione w niniejszej pracy, co stanowi istotny wkład w badania nad kolekcją wilanowską. Pod uwagę wzięto ich identyfikację, datowanie oraz połączenie niektórych spośród nich z pozycjami spisanymi w inwentarzu Pałacu w Natolinie w 1867 roku.

Artykuł Wojciecha Głowackiego analizuje życie Józefa Chełmońskiego w Paryżu (1876–1888), koncentrując się na miejscach jego zamieszkania i pracy. Dzięki kwerendom w Zbiorach Specjalnych Instytutu Sztuki PAN, archiwum Musée d’Orsay, bibliotece Institut national d’histoire de l’art w Paryżu oraz Getty Research Institute w Los Angeles autor odtworzył geograficzno-społeczny kontekst twórczości malarza. Wykorzystano metody analizy źródeł archiwalnych, katalogów Salonów, wspomnień i korespondencji. Chełmoński zmieniał miejsca zamieszkania kilkakrotnie. Wybór lokalizacji jego mieszkań wskazywał na chęć manifestowania sukcesu oraz późniejsze próby adaptacji do zmieniających się warunków. W początkowych latach mieszkał i pracował przy 11 boulevard de Clichy, 54 avenue Bosquet, 1 avenue Duquesne i 17 avenue de la Motte-Picquet. Ostatnie paryskie adresy to 110 boulevard Malesherbes i 4 place de Wagram. Pracownie malarza znajdowały się przy 5 rue Bizet, 11 impasse du Maine i 41 rue Verniquet. Autor kwestionuje mit patriotycznych motywacji powrotu Chełmońskiego do Polski, wskazując na materialne i społeczne uwarunkowania tej decyzji. Wykorzystuje bogaty materiał do odtworzenia przeprowadzek Chełmońskiego w Paryżu, wskazania ich przyczyn i naświetlenia szerszego kontekstu funkcjonowania polskiego artysty na rynku sztuki. Pozwala to na lepsze zrozumienie wyborów malarza związanych z własną twórczością, ambicjami i autopromocją w międzynarodowym środowisku artystów Paryża ostatniej ćwierci XIX wieku.

Muhafazakârlık, ideoloji mi yoksa bir tutum mu olduğu konusunda kesin bir uzlaşıya varılamayan ve hala tartışmaların merkezinde yer alan bir kavramdır. Ortaya çıktığı dönemden itibaren farklı yorumları ve versiyonları gelişmiş, zaman içinde değişim geçirmiştir. Özellikle modern çağda yenilik, aydınlanma ve rasyonalizme karşı tutumu önemli bir inceleme alanı olmuştur. Eğitime bakışı da bu bağlamda kritik bir konu olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Günümüzde eğitim, toplumun şekillenmesinde en önemli unsurlardan biri olarak değerlendirilirken, muhafazakâr düşünce bu alanı kendi değerleri çerçevesinde şekillendirmeyi hedeflemektedir. Gelenekler, din, kültür gibi geçmişe dair unsurların korunması gerektiğini savunan muhafazakârlık, eğitimi bu bağlamdan koparmak istememekte, hatta bazı durumlarda geçmişle olan bağı daha da kuvvetlendirmeye çalışmaktadır. Статья посвящена Музею древностей начальника Русской Духовной Миссии в Иерусалиме архим. Антонина (Капустина) как важной части его наследия. С середины XIX в. и до 1894 г. в результате целенаправленного сбора, случайных находок во время археологических раскопок и в процессе строительства церквей и паломнических приютов на землях, им приобретенных, покупок у антикваров, подарков у архим. Антонина сформировались чрезвычайно интересные коллекции древностей. В течение 1870–1890-х гг. начальник Миссии в Иерусалиме дарил предметы из своих нумизматических, археологических и рукописных собраний в различные научные и учебные, церковные и светские учреждения, музеи и древлехранилища. Среди основных адресатов были Киевская Духовная Академия, Императорское Православное Палестинское Общество, Одесское общество истории и древностей, Русское археологическое общество, Общество любителей естествознания, антропологии и этнографии, Санкт-Петербургская Духовная Академия. Нумизматические, археологические, рукописные, книжные собрания главных музеев, библиотек и архивов нескольких стран хранят дары о. Антонина. По его завещанию наиболее ценные предметы пополнили коллекции Эрмитажа (мраморная голова Ирода) и Публичной библиотеки (собрание греческих, славянских и восточных рукописей). После кончины о. Антонина внимание научной общественности, беспокоившейся за судьбу музея, не позволило Св. Синоду, охладевшему к его наследию после оформления земельной собственности, забыть о Музее древностей. По заданию Св. Синода профессор Санкт-Петербургской Духовной Академии В.Н. Мышцын предпринял попытку описать коллекции и сделать каталог музея. Но у Василия Никаноровича не хватило знаний для завершения работы, в итоге сохранились лишь черновые наброски к каталогу музея о. Антонина. В XX в. судьба музея была очень сложной. Несмотря на известность, музей так и не вошел в полной мере в научный оборот, но и сегодня, хотя и в очень сокращенном виде эта «живая энциклопедия цивилизаций» занимает в общем наследии о. Антонина существенное место. / The article is devoted to the Museum of Antiquities of Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), head of the Russian Orthodox Mission in Jerusalem as an important part of his legacy. Between the middle of the 19th century and 1894, Archimandrite Antonin assembled extremely interesting collections of antiquities as a result of purposeful collection of artifacts purchased from antiquaries, received as gifts, found during archaeological excavations and construction of churches and pilgrimage hostels on the lands acquired by the Russian Mission. After Antonin’s death, the anxiety of the scientific community for the fate of the Museum did not allow the Synod, which had cooled to his legacy after the registration of land ownership, to forget about the Museum of Antiquities. In the 20th century, the fate of the Museum was very complicated, but even today, although in a very reduced form, this ‘living encyclopedia of civilizations’ occupies an substantial place in Antonin’s whole legacy.

This is a biography of a visionary who realised his vision. The author, a retired judge, writes widely on Anglo-Catholic history. The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham has its devoted Church of Ireland followers. However, others may appreciate a brief explanation. During the middle ages the Holy House of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk developed into one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in England, It originated in the late eleventh century in response to a vision to the lady of the Manor. It was destroyed in 1538, during Henry VIII's turbulent reign. Antiquarian interest remained. In the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries a series of vicars took the parish of Walsingham in an Anglo-Catholic direction. From his appointment as vicar in 1921 until his death in office in 1958, Alfred Hope Patten made his life's work the restoration, in effect the recreation, of the Shrine, so that Walsingham continues to draw Anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox pilgrims.

The bull "De Confratria colligenda et qd Papa omnibus benefactoribus fratrum si vere fuerint penitentes veniam suorum peccatorum pollicet," issued by Pope Honorius III at the Lateran on January 21, 1222 (xij. Kal. februarii, Pontificatus Anno vj), represents a document of considerable importance for understanding the complex network of relationships between the papacy, the military-religious orders, and lay society in the first quarter of the 13th century. The document, addressed to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (the Hospitallers), formally establishes the system of confraternities linked to the Order and sets out the spiritual benefits granted to benefactors.

Matilde Serao visited Galilee in June 1893. She was a famous Italian writer and journalist who traveled alone throughout the Holy Land for nearly two months with the sole company of a small pistol. In 1900, she published her travel diary, Memories of Palestine, a book of great impact that combines: an extremely talented female author, a perilous exotic journey to “Dreamland” and a solitary female pilgrim among thousands of male travelers (intellectuals, businessmen and religious people) on their way to Palestine. Serao transports us to the Land called Palestine and we fall in love with it through her descriptions.
This paper discusses her opinions and sometimes stereotyped points of view of the Galilee she visits. It also offers the opportunity of presenting Serao’s narrative, which is full of anecdotes and vivid descriptions. We share, e.g., her first impressions approaching Galilee “The heart was happy arriving in view of the smiling green Galilee”, or we bounce along on Mr. Suss’s horse & carriage for the 6-hour journey from Haifa to Nazareth through the corn fields and luxurious vegetation of Northern Palestine. Serao’s descriptions provide a contribution to the research on Galilee in those times through the investigation of how it was seen and perceived by a non-Jewish female traveler, talented writer and journalist, who detects details with a feminine eye. This paper follows Serao’s trip in Galilee, and discusses not only what she sees and reports, but also what she chooses not to mention.

“Sanctum Stephanum qui dicitur Sancta Hjerusalem" è scritto sul diploma di Carlo il Grosso, l'ultimo dei carolingi, datato 887; così egli descriveva, circa milleduecento anni fa, la Rotonda stefaniana e l'area immediatamente al di fuori delle mura della città, verso oriente.Questo studio si occupa dei pellegrinaggi alla Replica del Santo Sepolcro a Bologna, nella Basilica di Santo Stefano, comunemente chiamata la Jerusalem Bononiensis. L’articolo sottolinea l’importanza di questa Replica, che in effetti diede inizio alla Gerusalemme bolognese, per i pellegrini, uomini e donne, “in Bologna e oltre”. Vi si descrive il sito, il suo significato per i pellegrini e la sua importanza il motivo per cui Santo Stefano diviene meta di pellegrinaggio, la sua popolarità e la grande affluenza dei pellegrini. L’articolo si sofferma sul significato simbolico del sepolcro per i pellegrini, sui racconti e le leggende popolari riguardanti Santo Stefano, una vox populi trasmessa per via orale, talvolta riportata nelle Cronache del tempo. Molto spesso leggende e credenze popolari sono motivo di attrazione per i pellegrini. Un’attenzione particolare viene dedicata alle donne pellegrine, un argomento finora non studiato abbastanza, ed enfatizza la presenza di queste donne che arrivavano a Santo Stefano e alla sua Santa Replica in particolare. Lo studio ripercorre le antiche cronache bolognesi e ogni disponibile fonte che metta in luce gli antichi riti per le donne che venivano celebrati alla Replica e che attiravano folle di donne con motivazioni speciali. Queste pellegrine provenivano da ogni dove con intenti specifici che l’articolo mette in luce, le ragioni della loro devozione e ciò che si aspettano di trovarvi. Lo studio evidenzia anche il legame diretto tra le origini della Basilica e l’antico culto di Iside. Attraverso l’esame delle antiche cronache bolognesi, vengono riportati alla luce antichi riti celebrati esclusivamente per le donne, ancora attivi oggi, perlopiù sconosciuti alla maggior parte della gente, sia di Bologna che di fuori e sono presentate foto inedite prese in loco direttamente. Viene poi considerata la nuova forma di pellegrinaggio alla Basilica di Santo Stefano oggi:ovvero il turismo. Lo studio termina con un’intervista al monaco benedettino olivetano responsabile dell’Archivio di Santo Stefano il quale aiuta a chiarire come fosse l’affluenza dei pellegrini un tempo e come essa si presenti oggi, soffermandosi anche su come la devozione a Santo Stefano sia mutata nel corso degli anni.

At the time of development of photography as a new medium, Poland was under partition, so anything that happened at the time on its historical territory was associated either with the German, Russian, or Austrian empire. In addition, after a few uprisings (1830,(1863)(1864), and unsuccessful struggles for independence, some Poles were imprisoned, sent to Siberian labour camps, or forced to leave the country. This is the main, but not the only reason we can also find some Polish photographers experimenting abroad. This article gives a short overview of the first experiments that took place on Polish territory, or those undertaken by Poles regardless of where they lived. The list cannot be complete, of course, as many of the experiments were not recorded and thus have not survived to this day as evidence. It also cannot be presented in full because of the limited space of this article, so just some of the most interesting from those documented examples are selected. When speaking about the first photographers we should bear in mind that we can rarely call them professional photographers. They were rather experimenters, amateurs, or those who used cameras in their work, and only occasionally developed their hobbies into a proprofession.

Sacred spaces, or worship places, play a central role in the religious experiences of believers, serving as the loci of divine-human interaction, communal identity, and spiritual formation. In Nigeria, where Christianity, Islam, and Traditional African Religion represent the three major religious traditions, worship places reflect not only theological meanings but also cultural and socio-political realities. This article examines the nature, function, and significance of worship places in these three religious traditions. Using historical, theological, and ethnographic perspectives, the paper highlights the architectural expressions, ritual functions, and social roles of churches, mosques, and shrines. The findings underscore the dynamic interplay between faith and culture in the construction and use of sacred spaces, and the importance of these spaces in interfaith dialogue and national cohesion. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for mutual respect and understanding in Nigeria's religiously plural context.

письма от 1873 г., адресованные архимандритом Антонином (Капустиным)
и помощником драгомана миссии Якубом Халеби паломнице и благотворительнице А. И. Кадышевой. Документы были обнаружены в рукописных копиях в тетрадях, принадлежавших А. Е. фон Руммель. Публикуемые письма значимы как источник при изучении феномена «Русская Палестина», а также важны для понимания особенностей общения архимандрита Антонина и Якуба Халеби с женщинами-паломницами и благотворительницами.

Resumen: El presente trabajo examina tanto las razones políticas y literarias que llevaron al autor de Sir Gawain and the Green Knight a proponer una reivindicación moral de su protagonista, como las estrategias a las que acudió para llevar a buen término esta empresa. Teniendo presente este objetivo, el artículo presta especial atención a las funciones narrativas que el poeta le asignó a las extensas descripciones de las aventuras cinegéticas de Sir Bertilak, señalando la estrecha relación que estas tienen con las artes venandi compuestas durante el período y los modelos de virtud y masculinidad que proponen. This thesis examines the Sā’atnāme, a widely circulated but little-studied late medieval Turkish text, in light of the political, social, and religious transformations of post-Mongol Anatolia. It presents the Sā’atnāme as both a reflection of the context in which it was produced and an active force in shaping it. Arguing that the text highlights an interplay between charisma- and scripture-loyal Islamic orientations, prominent in the region, the thesis explores how the Sā’atnāme functioned as an alternative text to the Qur'ān and hadith while being a conduit for sevāb (meritorious reward granted by God) and baraka (blessings) within Turkish-speaking Muslim communities. Beyond its content, the thesis traces the Sā’atnāme’s manuscript journey, examining its dissemination and reception in the early modern Ottoman Empire through paratextual elements in its various manuscript copies. By linking the text's dissemination to the proliferation of 'ilm-i hal literature from the mid-16"' century onward, this thesis offers insights into the religious history of Anatolia and expands our understanding of the newly emerging Turkish religious literature in the region.

Analizuje teksty naukowców, krytyków sztuki oraz artystach, osadzając poruszaną przez nie problematykę w szerokim kontekście przemian kulturowych, społecznych i ekonomicznych I poł. XIX w. W rozważaniach tych fotografia widziana jest jako nośnik wspomnień, proteza pamięci czy symulakrum, a jej owy potencjał stał się jednym z argumentów za uznaniem jej swoistości i autonomiczności wobec innych sztuk.

Jan Potocki described the pleasures of travel as "days of comfort and rest redeemed by days of inconvenience and toil." A more valuable reward, however, was the acquisition of knowledge about humanity and the natural and cultural world. To achieve this, the traveller had to accept the inherent risks of any expedition. Travel was a crucial tool of cognition for Potocki, explaining his extensive wanderings. Consequently, the record of dangers he faced is both extensive and varied. Through textualisation, these dangers have become a topos of travel writing, and as elements of a narrative, they can be interpreted literarily. This perspective informs the present study, which draws upon Potocki's accounts of his travels to Turkey and Egypt, the Netherlands, Morocco, the Caucasus, and China.

The Apocalypse has become the central subject of many comic books. Why?
Are people so afraid of war and depression that they run into the arms of the living dead creatures of hell in our back kitchen, cellar, or back garden?
In this particular book, there is some hope in the fact the main characters rescue, more or less, one person that has fallen into hell, and they manage to escape from that hellish world and the island where they are confined with a ship just waiting for them and they end up this episode of the story in a ship sailing on a vast ocean, going… we do not know where.
The story is essentially centered on males with a two-female exception. The Omnia Mater who is a putschistic lady who seizes the justice of her world to control it all but she ends up in plain burning dust. The second is Jeanne who provides the ship to escape from this world.
The whole book does not have one single square centimeter, or inch if you prefer, of color. Yet it is not black and white. The color of old, old, very old photos that were in the bister line of hues, shades, and colors.
That was a long time ago.

During the Great Exhibition, held in the Crystal Palace in 1851, a decision was made to produce a photographically illustrated four volume presentation set of the Reports by the Juries. The Royal Commissioners of the Exhibition were eventually to order one hundred and forty presentation sets, each containing 155 salt paper Calotype prints. This venture was by far the largest photographic publishing venture so far attempted, over 20,000 photographs having to be individually printed. The problems involved in the production of these photographic prints for the Reports by the Juries are an excellent example of the intricate difficulties and central issues which bedeviled 19th century photography, particularly during the first two decades of its existence. They are thus worthy of fuller discussion. These problems include the technical limitations of the medium, embryonic working practices, craftsmanship, copyright and patents, logistics and, that mainstay of British conversation, the weather!ss In the early summer of 1851, when the Reports of the Juries was probably conceived, Nikolaas Henneman, Talbot's former valet, photographic assistant in charge of his Reading establishment and, since June 1848, independently established in London as a commercial photographer working with a Talbotype license,s9 had more experience than anyone in the "mass production" of photographic prints. It might therefore have appeared logical that he should be given the contract. However, it is interesting to note that Henneman's track record was far from a glittering one and in other circumstances he might not have been offered the contract to produce the photographic prints for the Repmts. His prints for the Pencil of Nature, issued for June 1844 onwards, "appeared in a far more haphazard manner than

The historical sites and devotional routes were important to Christians in Europe. The early development of the primary devotional route in Jerusalem for pilgrims, being the Stations of the Cross or the Via Dolorosa, is the focus of this article as illustrated with these maps.

This study focuses on the tension between the national, public, and social restrictions that apply to the Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) in Israel and the way that Jews from a variety of religious streams understand Shabbat as leisure time that allows for a subjective choice of practices and self-realization. Jewish law provides clear rules and instructions for behavior on Shabbat, including a prohibition on different types of melacha (different kinds of creative activity), with the goal of "remembering" and "keeping" the Sabbath. While in Israel there are many Jews who do not follow these laws, they also make Shabbat special in other ways. Since Israel is a Jewish state, there is no clear separation between religion and state; today there are laws, regulations, expectations, and customs relating to Shabbat in the public sphere. To understand the diversity of views of Israelis about Shabbat, qualitative interviews were conducted with 66 secular, religious, formerly religious, traditional, and Ultra-Orthodox Jews, aged 25-50. Analysis of the survey data shows that Israeli Jews have a variety of perspectives regarding Shabbat, and do not describe Shabbat being structured and experienced as collective, homogeneous, and restrictive. Among the interviewees, religious and secular alike, Shabbat is described as a time full of variable subjective content, based on free choice and free from other obligations. On the one hand, even the religious and Ultra-Orthodox prioritize the individual and their family, sometimes more than religious faith or halachic obligation. On the other hand, even for those who do not keep the Shabbat halachically, resting on Shabbat forms an organizing principle for the weekend, lending this time its unique quality.

representative of the Armenian community in the Ottoman Empire, focused on
collecting statistical data on the number of Western Armenians, their proportion relative
to other ethnoreligious groups in Western Armenia, and compiling corresponding
reports.
This article examines the initiatives of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople
to gather statistical data on Western Armenians from the signing of the Russo-Turkish
agreement on Armenian reforms on January 26 (February 8), 1914, until the outbreak
of World War I. The study is based on previously unpublished documents from the
archive of the Patriarchate’s Information Bureau
