This paper describes the recent bone finds from the Cuban coastal village Caletones. Bones of domestic animals (cattle, sheep/goat, pig, chicken) as well as sea turtles were present. Furthermore, bones of two, not yet determined, fish species were found. Marine animals provide an important part of animal protein for the coastal population in Cuba. Pathological changes were only found in the skulls of pigs and are mainly related to the teeth and jaws

The presented research concerns textiles from late medieval (ca. 14th century) graves Nos. 27 and 43, discovered in the cemetery as a result of research by Romuald Odoj in 1957. collected information, along with analysis of the grave goods, was to help to determine the social status of the buried people and to contribute to considerations on the interpretation of similar cemeteries in other parts of former east Prussia.
The HPLC-UV-Vis-MS/MS technique was used to analyse the dyes, which allows
for the detection of trace amounts of organic dyeing compounds in heavily degraded objects. The analysis showed that local plant and animal colourants were used to dye wool, covering colours from blue, through green, yellow, orange to red. The use of undyed wool was also confirmed. Another noteworthy find is the heraldic sign embossed on a leather fragment from grave 43. non-european dyes (indigo and shellac red) were identified on silk fragments, which corresponds to the Far eastern origin of the raw material. The studies carried out suggest that the people buried in the aforementioned graves belonged to the local elite, perhaps associated with the Teutonic stronghold of Wiesenburg. despite the presence of valuable fabrics, both the selection of some of the grave goods (amulets, a ‘Totenkrone’ type necklace) and the fact that they were buried in a cemetery outside the church boundaries indicate a strong connection between the deceased as well as their relatives and the local old Prussian ethnos. The presented results, apart from the partial reconstruction of the colours of the 14th-century Bartians' funeral attire, constitute a starting point for assessing the wealth, access to goods and susceptibility to the influence of christian culture among the old Prussian nobility.

The article discusses in general intensive cultural and settlement transformations within the area of southern Greater Poland during the Late Pre-Roman Period and the initial stage of the Roman Period (approx. 250 BC – 80 AD). It briefly characterises the natural conditions favourable for the development of prehistoric settlement in the area, as well as its excellent communication with the most important cultural centres of that time in Central Europe, developing in the Middle Danube and the Elbe basins. The latter, associated with the Jastorf culture, played a major role in shaping of the cultural situation in southern Greater Poland and the entire Polish Lowland along with the crystallisation of the Przeworsk culture in the A1 and A2 phases of the Late Pre-Roman period (approx. 250 BC – 50 BC). In turn, an appearance of well-organised Celtic groups over the Prosna River in the Kalisz area, issuing their own small gold trade coins with nominal values, imitating the issues of the powerful Boii tribe,
should be linked with the Danube centre. This coinage became equivalent in a supra-regional exchange with the late Celtic communities living along the so-called Amber Route, connecting the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea with the southern Baltic coast. Undoubtedly, due to these contacts, a large number of wares characteristic of the late Celtic elite culture appeared in the three large settlement clusters that are visible around the turn of the era in the area of Kalisz and Sieradz and on the upper and middle Obra River, with dominant elements of costume and weaponry of the Noric origin.

The inscriptions on two omphalos cups from the Brandopferplatz in San Giorgio di Valpoli- cella (Verona) are presented here. The first case reads two incomplete words, the meaning of which unfortunately remains obscure. The second case presents a two-letter abbreviation. The palaeographic characteristics allow a general chronological classification in the Second Iron Age. In contrast, the typology of the artefacts allows them to be placed between the late 6th and early 5th century BC.

Summary: The primary focus of this study is an older discovery from the fortification of Horodca Mica, which represents, to date, an unusual phenomenon for the period of the Second Iron Age in the Prut-Dniester space. The deposit consists of 11 iron artefacts, which can be interpreted as agricultural and carpentry tools, but which can also be seen as weapons. The objective of this approach was to present these findings in a manner that firstly contextualised their discovery, followed by a typological-chronological analysis and interpretation of the deposition phenomenon.

This paper presents the Pre-Roman Iron Age component of the cemetery at Mang de Bargen in Northern Germany. Thus far, the primary focus of investigations at this site has been on the Bronze Age. However, evidence indicates that intense activity also occurred during the pre-Roman Iron Age, which was not limited to the cemetery but also manifested in the surrounding area. The Iron Age is characterised by significant changes and innovations, particularly in material culture. This study examines these developments, with a particular focus on relative and absolute dating. The cemetery features demonstrate not only a new, institutionalised practice of cremation, but also a new approach to collecting the burnt bones at the pyre and their placement in the urn. Moreover, some urn burials are enclosed with different types of ditches – a custom that can be situated within a supra-regional context. Furthermore, the osteological investigation indicates a shift in age composition at the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the pre-Roman Iron Age. By integrating environmental data from pollen profiles and find distribution patterns, the cemetery can be contextualised within a region undergoing a transformation with the advent of the pre-Roman Iron Age, exhibiting a notable surge in activity.

przede wszystkim rezultaty badań z lat 2007 i 2008 dotyczy wyłącznie rozwoju osady
usytuowania osady i jej związków z pobliskimi cmentarzyskami wraz z którymi tworzyła jeden

This study examines the role of the Eura region as a nexus linking the inland with Baltic Sea trade routes. Luistari cemetery, spanning from the early Merovingian to Medieval periods, provides key insights into SouthWestern Finland's socioeconomic structure and communication networks. Despite its significance, this burial community's chronological dynamics and regional role remain poorly understood. Using multi-isotopic evidence contextualised with archaeological data, this research explores mobility and subsistence patterns among Luistari's population. By delineating the bioavailable strontium range in the Eura region, the study assesses the local burial community's mobility dynamics across various chronological phases. Identification of long-and short-distance migrants, discerned through strontium and carbon isotopes in conjunction with archaeological context, enhances understanding of Luistari within the regional and Circum-Baltic framework. Multi-isotopic evidence further aids in grasping local development within environmental and climatic contexts. Analysis of the strontium isotopic data patterns, combined with carbon and nitrogen, sheds light on settlement locations and subsistence strategies of the Luistari population. Notable transformations during the Viking I period (800-880 CE), marked by the establishment of a "founding" community, and shifts in dietary and migratory patterns in periods V II-III (880-1000 CE), indicate stabilisation of the local socioeconomic conditions. Period V IV (1000-1070 CE) reveals connections, both maritime and continental, as the local community integrates into long-distance communication networks. The Final Period (1070-1130 CE) then shows only limited signs of mobility. The data suggest varied mobility patterns over the long-term development of the local community coupled with visibly changing subsistence strategies.

This article opens up new perspectives on the interpretation of the Gundestrup cauldron. It argues for a place of origin and manufacture in northwestern Gaul (modern northern France and Belgium). One key argument is the prominent numerical symbolism, the three-time reoccurrence of single motives like triple leaves or garlands or the triple repetition of narrative elements on some inner plates. Number-three-symbolism is a Leitmotiv of Celtic religious belief. Furthermore, the narrative content of the inner plates manifests different facets of the overarching theme or iconographic content of the Gundestrup Cauldron: the belief in eternity, resurrection and rebirth in a ritual as well as narrative sense. In this context, the article traces the motif of the horned snake back to the 5th c. BC and connects it with already existing Dionysian beliefs in the Celtic world. This longue durée perspective is reflected in some scenes on the inner plates, which draw on historical events such as the encounters of Celtic tribes with Hellenistic and Roman rulers, generations before the Cauldron’s manufacture. These cataclysmic encounters with lasting effects led to their incorporation into legend and myth, visualized on the Cauldron in symbolic abbreviation. Finally, the article offers an explanation of why the Gundestrup Cauldron was deposited in a peat bog in northern Jutland, Denmark, way out of its place of manufacture and primary use.

This note is occasioned by the chance find of a Bronze Age blade, 2.5 km north‑west of Sălătrucu village, Argeș County. It is a halberd, in authors’ opinion, the implement representing a rare occurence at the Lower Danube. Amongst few analogies can be mentioned the golden specimens from Măcin and Perșinari, and also the fragmentary item from Urlați. Several aspects are discussed, such as origin and chronology of these implements at the Lower Danube, possible analogies and their function.

This article presents a zooarchaeological isotopic database for Bronze Age Italy, based on previously published isotopic studies. It integrates 209 samples from both, domesticated and wild animals, across Northern, Central, and Southern Italy. The primary aim of the study is to provide comprehensive description of isotopic data covering historical, archaeological, biological, zooarchaeological, geological information in one compile file. It offers a wide ranging analysis of animal and plant consumption patterns across Italy during the Bronze Age, highlighting differences and similarities across the Italian peninsula and islands. The article underlines isotopic databases as a crucial source for meta-analytical research of prehistorical lifestyle, underscoring their significance in archaeological studies and providing multi-layered insights into prehistoric human-animal interactions. Furthermore, it presents a vital importance of zooarchaeology, as a discipline to investigate human dietary and husbandry practices. Statistical methods are applied to visualize and interpret the isotopic data in order to enhance the clarity and accuracy of dietary and socio-economic dynamics in Bronze Age Italy. After gathering isotopic studies and organizing them in an excel file based on various criteria, statistical tests for multiple comparison analysis of isotopic ratios were performed using the SPSS software. The Results suggest marked regional differences in diet, with Northern Italy showing early evidence of C4 plant cultivation, such as millet, while Central and Southern Italy maintained a reliance on traditional cereals like wheat and barley (C3 plants).

In 2013 and 2016, the Museum of Southern Jutland excavated two settlement sites outside Haderslev, in southern Jutland, very close to the well-known sacrificial bog of Ejsbøl. One dated to the Pre-Roman Iron Age (500-50 BC) and the other to the Late Roman and Germanic Iron Ages (AD 250-550). This article mainly considers the latter, a site comprising numerous farmsteads in several phases, and presents preliminary results of the excavation while taking the wider context, including its proximity to Ejsbøl, into account.

From october to november 2013 Sydvestjyske Museer in Ribe excavated the ploughed-over remains of a small circular motte situated in the meadows east of Ribe. The motte has been known as Riber Ulfsborg since the 16th c. Riber Ulf was a nobleman allied to Sven Grathe and played a central role in the Civil Wars 1146 – 57. He died shortly after Svens defeat at Grathe hede in 1157. The excavation revealed that the 35 m diameter-motte was built from turf and that a small wooden castle had been standing on the top. The time of construction could be determined to 1148/49 and timbers from the castle were found in the moat. At the foot of the mound lots of stones were unearthed, probably used by the defenders against an attacking army. Along with clear traces of fire on the timber from the moat this shows, that the castle fell to an attacking army and was burned down at some time prior to 1157.

The pre-Roman history of the town of Aléria has been interpreted in various ways since the early 20th century. However, some of these interpretations have been more political than scientific, particularly within fascist historiography and post-war Corsican regionalist historiography. Based on this observation, this article aims to examine the issues and the ways in which Aléria's pre-Roman history – and through it, Corsica's history – has been utilized by scholars and intellectuals close to the Corsican nationalist movement to support an essentialist discourse on contemporary island identity.

T he bog depositions with fire stones are dated to the late Roman period and the Migration Period. T he same chronology concerns graves with fire-making implements of the type in question (Ilkjaer 1993 a, 251-252; 359-373; 1993 b, 438-440 list 22). T he earliest sharp-pointed oval fire stone was recorded in Störlinge grave on Öland where it co-occurred with weapon combination group 7 dated to period C1b/C2. Strike-alight stones were also found in assemblages with weapon combination groups 9-12, dated to phases from C2 up till D2 (e. g. graves in Rønsberg, Foss and Evebø in Norway, Rumma in Sweden). One of the latest Scandinavian grave finds with the fire stones in question remains the splendid grave at Högom in Sweden from the end of 5th century (Ramqvist 1992). As mentioned above, fire stones are connected with military belts and warriors of different ranks (see Fett 1937 a; 1937 b; Ilkjaer 1993 a, figs. 146; 150-151); however, they are also linked with settlements' activities and fire rituals (cf. Monikander 2014). In settlement context or as stray finds, rarely in graves, the Scandinavian fire-striking implements are recorded in the southern zone of the Baltic Sea and North Sea-in the Netherlands,
