There are various electrical, mechanical and chemical methods used to achieve haemostasis in spine surgery. Chemical haemostatic agents are often preferable to bipolar cautery in intraspinal procedures, because these products control bleeding without occluding the vessel lumen and cause no thermal injuries to adjacent structures. A topical haemostat is the often the technique of choice to control bleeding from bone

The dynamic conditions of global markets force manufacturers to invest in flexible production strategies to cope with demanding clients and still survive in a competitive economic scenario. In this sense, small series production appears as a trend for many manufacturing niches and brings many challenges regarding manufacturing and quality assurance aspects. Investing in production flexibility implies increasing production control complexity and planning. This flexibility usually does not correlate with higher degrees of manufacturing automation or with quality assurance strategies. The concept of Cognitive Metrology strives for handling the challenging automation and quality inspection requirements of small series production with a new approach based on self-optimizing systems. This paper introduces the concepts of self-optimization and Cognitive Metrology and focuses especially on a multiagent-based approach for supporting flexible automation and quality assurance in small series production, as a basis for the development of the Cognitive Metrology technology. Initial results of the application of this approach into industrial prototypes are introduced and discussed as well as the migration of this system to different industrial scenarios.

We consider a single-item, periodic-review, serial, multi-echelon inventory system, with linear inventory holding and penalty costs. In order to facilitate shipment consolidation and capacity planning, we assume the system has implemented periodic batching: each stage is allowed to order at given equidistant times. Further, for each stage except the most downstream one, the reorder interval is assumed to be an

"Traditional printing works in maximum garment industries are facing different problems like low productivity, longer production lead time, high rework and rejection, low flexibility, lower quality product, high non-value added work etc. In this study these different problems were identified by using numerous effective production control tools like process analysis, layout of work station, motion and time study, work standardization etc. The encouraging results after implementing these tools give the way to go forward and thrust to reach at the end point. Some key benefits of this implementation are reduction of excess motion and non value added work by 50%, decreasing of sample rejection level by 70%, reduction of work level for repairing works by 80%. As a result total processing time for final output is decreased. After the implementation of these tools effectively the result shows the significant improvement of the production than before."

Reliable prediction of sales can improve the quality of business strategy. In this research, fuzzy logic and artificial neural network are integrated into the fuzzy back-propagation network (FBPN) for sales forecasting in Printed Circuit Board (PCB) industry. The fuzzy back propagation network is constructed to incorporate production-control expert judgments in enhancing the model's performance. Parameters chosen as inputs to the FBPN are no longer considered as of equal importance, but some sales managers and production control experts are requested to express their opinions about the importance of each input parameter in predicting the sales with linguistic terms, which can be converted into pre-specified fuzzy numbers. The proposed system is evaluated through the real world data provided by a printed circuit board company and experimental results indicate that the Fuzzy back-propagation approach outperforms other three different forecasting models in MAPE measures.

The production and assimilation of acetate during the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on glucose and ethanol have been studied. Acetate inhibits growth and causes decreased yields on both substrates. The usual respiratory quotient based policy for fed batch control cannot be used for highly acetate producing yeast because of compensation between O2 over-consumption (due to acetate) and CO2 over-production (due to ethanol) in case of glucose over-feeding.

Industry 4.0 stands for disruptive change caused by the expansion of the Internet of Things and by Cyber-Physical Systems in production and logistics. The term includes innovations such as intelligent products and processes, a deeper integration along the supply chain, and digital technologies in production. The aim is a faster reaction to increasingly variable customer demand, resulting in increased competitiveness in dynamic, volatile markets. This study assesses available SAP® technologies in the area of enterprise resource planning, illustrates the successful implementation of Industry 4.0 in an integrated concept with the help of use cases, and makes recommendations. Under industry 4.0, internet of things (IoT), especially radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, has been widely applied in manufacturing environment. This technology can bring convenience to production control and production transparency. Meanwhile, it generates increasing production data that are sometimes discrete, uncorrelated, and hard-to-use. Thus, an efficient analysis method is needed to utilize the invaluable data. This work provides an RFID-based production data analysis method for production control in IoT-enabled smart job-shops. The physical configuration and operation logic of IoT-enabled smart job-shop production are firstly described. Based on that, an RFID-based production data model is built to formalize and correlate the heterogeneous production data. Then, an eventdriven RFID-based production data analysis method is proposed to construct the RFID events and judge the process command execution. Furthermore, a near big data approach is used to excavate hidden information and knowledge from the historical production data. A demonstrative case is studied to verify the feasibility of the proposed model and methods. It is expected that our work will provide a different insight into the RFIDbased production data analysis.

Purpose: The objective of the present study is to analyze the effects of the transition to English Medium Instruction (EMI) on lecturers in Spanish universities in one specific area, namely Operations Management courses taught in Business degrees. Methodology: After reviewing the bibliography, we designed a questionnaire based on previous research into EMI in non-Anglophone countries. By administering this online, we gathered information from 20 EMI lecturers giving Operations Management courses in thirteen Spanish Universities. The data were analyzed by means of a descriptive analysis of the closed-ended questions and thematic content analysis of the open-ended questions. Findings: Most professors report that they initially reacted negatively to the idea of having to teach in English, but now realize that most of their fears were ungrounded. They emphasize that it is very important to invest time in training seminars and the exchange of experiences. Other relevant findings are the ...

In general, genetic selection is applied after first calving to traits that manifest themselves during the animal's productive life, mostly during the early part of productive life. This selection policy has had undesirable correlated responses in other economically important traits, such as health and fertility, and may also have had an effect on the growth of animals both during productive life and before first calving. In this study, we analyzed the growth trajectory of dairy heifers that had been selected for maximum production of combined fat and protein (measured in kg; select line) or for average production (control line) in the United Kingdom. Before first calving, these divergent lines were managed as a single group. Select line heifers grew faster than did control line heifers. They were also heavier at first calving, but by the end of 3 lactations, the lines were not significantly different in live weight. Selection primarily for yield and for other traits has led to ...

In anthroposophical medicine, total extracts of Viscum album (mistletoe) have been developed to treat cancer patients. The oldest such product is Iscador. Although Iscador is regarded as a complementary cancer therapy, it is the most commonly used oncological drug in Germany. To determine whether Iscador treatment prolongs survival time of patients with carcinoma of the colon, rectum, or stomach; breast carcinoma with or without axillary or remote metastases; or small cell or non-small-cell bronchogenic carcinoma; and to explore synergies between Iscador treatment and psychosomatic self-regulation. Prospective nonrandomized and randomized matched-pair studies nested within a cohort study. In this report we consider a single part-type, single unreliable machine production system with the backlog and the inventory bounded. The part flow into the system is described through a fluid model. The problem is to determine a production control which minimizes an infinite horizon average de- mand loss/backlog/surplus cost. It is well known that, in many interesting cases, if there are no bounds on the inventory and on the backlog of the system, the problem is solved by a hedging point policy, and the hedging point can be analytically computed. In this report we prove that for a bounded inventory/backlog system, the hedging point policy is still optimal and provide an implicit equation to compute the optimal safety stock. The structure of this equation easily allows to determine the optimal safety stock through any numerical method. Using this equation, we analyze the effect of some system parameters (in particular the demand loss cost parameter and the backlog limit) on the com...
