New graduates are often placed into project management roles, but may face challenges in these roles. This study surveyed managers from Brazilian organizations and gathered information on the environment, practices and results of projects where new graduates were in project management roles. In-depth interviews were executed with a subset of these managers to further collect insights into issues surrounding new graduates’ performance in project management. This paper examines the preparation and performance of new graduates in project management roles. It addresses specific project management skills and competencies that are involved in delivering successful projects and how these relate to project success or failure. The conclusions determined that new graduates are often not fully prepared for project management roles and fail to conduct comprehensive project preparations, often missing risk management; their soft skills are not fully developed creating further challenges; and the...

The adoption of smart farming has altered food production by increasing efficiency, sustainability, and productivity. However, there is a digital divide, with affluent countries such as the United States benefiting from advanced agricultural technologies, nevertheless, many African countries face limited access to digital tools, inadequate infrastructure, and financial restraints. This disparity has implications for food security, economic development, and global agricultural sustainability, prompting an in-depth examination of the factors impacting smart farming adoption in different regions. This review examines the benefits and impact of smart farming adoption on agricultural productivity, as well as identifies the potential benefits of cross-regional knowledge sharing across the United States and Africa. The findings indicate that smart farming technologies have considerably increased agricultural productivity and sustainability in the United States, due to strong government initiatives, public-private collaborations, and widespread digital infrastructure. In contrast, African farmers confront limited broadband connection, financial constraints, and insufficient institutional support, which restricts the adoption of precision agriculture and data-driven farming. Therefore, bridging the digital divide in agriculture necessitates a comprehensive approach that combines technology, policy, and capacitybuilding efforts.

The identification of temporary (horizontal) leaders is a difficult proposition for project managers. In the absence of knowledge or lack of skill, project managers tend to identify and empower reliable team members to temporarily lead aspects or phases of a project (Müller, et al., 2017B;. An appointment to a temporary leadership position on a project is often the first formal step into a project management role . Prior to the Balanced Project Leadership Framework (Müller, et al., 2017A) and the Chinese study of Müller, et al., (2017B), research was lacking for demonstrating the benefits of using temporary (horizontal) leaders on complex projects. The concept of balanced project leadership is still in its infancy with diminutive evidence to ratify it as a reliable method of project leadership. Using the second event (identification) of the Balanced Project Leadership Framework, Müller, et al., (2017B) created three themes demonstrating how horizontal leaders are identified. Additional to the author conducting similar research, the fourth event (governance) of the Balanced Project Leadership Framework will also be examined based on the recommendation by Müller, et al., (2017A) to further develop the framework. Based on first order responses and second order construct findings , the researcher presents a new holistic framework, illustrating how horizontal leaders can be identified, governed and lead projects to success. The findings will demonstrate how organisations can save on cost by implementing approriate organisational structures, internal human recourse capabilities and a culture that is hospitable to projects and change. The author also considers the new framework favourable for both academics and future project leaders to use as a guide for understanding the expectations and requirements for being a successful project leader.

The identification of temporary (horizontal) leaders is a difficult proposition for project managers. In the absence of knowledge or lack of skill, project managers tend to identify and empower reliable team members to temporarily lead aspects or phases of a project (Muller, et al., 2017B; Redick, et al., 2014). As the number of open source software (OSS) projects in health care grows rapidly, researchers are faced with the challenge of understanding and explaining the success of the open source phenomenon. This paper proposes a research framework that examines the roles of project sponsorship, license type, development status and technological complements in the success of open source health information technology (HIT) projects and it develops a systematic method for classifying projects based on their success potential. Drawing from economic theory, a novel proposition in our framework suggests that higher project-license restrictiveness will increase OSS adoption, because organizations will be more confident that the OSS project will remain open source in the future. We apply the framework to a sample of open source software projects in health care. Our findings suggest that although project sponsorship and license restrictiveness influence project metrics they are not significant predictors of project success categorization. On the other hand, development status, operating system and programming language are significant predictors of an OSS project's success categorization. We discuss research and application implications and suggest future research directions.

Much of the work developed in organizations occurs as projects and this tendency is crescent. The Project Management Office (PMO) is an organizational entity with responsibilities related to the centralization and coordination of projects under its domain. In fact, PMOs can fill many different roles or functions in different organizations. In this way, it is not possible to state that PMOs filling specific functions are better than others, more general and preemptive. The decision about which functions a PMO might fill in a specific context will most likely be influenced by this context. However, since too many organizations tend to repeat the same mistakes too often and also reinvent the wheel, knowledge management seems to be an important integrative function with impacts on organizational learning and consequentially on project performance. As project managers tend to give lower priority to everything that does not directly contribute to their project, if this knowledge management is not well done and adopted, it will simply be ignored. In this way, this conceptual paper aims to answer how PMOs manage project's knowledge. Through a systematic review based approach in three search engines: ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Wiley, we obtained a classification divided into four themes: communities of practice, knowledge broker, lessons learned and project performance, which were then synthesized. The cyclic work composed by the first three themes tends to increase project performance and thus strengthening and legitimizing the PMO presence in an organization. Lessons learned refinement and storage in an accessible and readable way seem to be the strong one to be emphasized by PMOs. As the majority of studies were based on qualitative investigations sustained by interviews, observations and focus groups, it is necessary a major number of empirical studies about how PMOs can better facilitate the groups and how tacit knowledge can be better codified to be used in future cases.

Leadership often influences organisational performance. The level of competence of a leader determines the impact of leadership on performance criteria. For maximum impact, project managers' leadership competence must extend through all levels of organizational setting. Researches' have been conducted on the influence of leadership on performance. However, focused on factors identified as key performance criteria. More recent work has identified other relevant performance criteria that were left out in previous attestations. This work considers all criteria adjudged to be relevant in literature to establish the level of influence. A questionnaire was administered among construction stakeholders in private and public sectors of the construction industry in Nigeria. Seven performance criteria and five leadership competence were the subject of the research through self-administration of the questionnaires. Both descriptive and correlation analysis were used to analyse the relationship between Project Managers Leadership Competencies and the Performance of construction projects. The results of the study established a significant correlation (0.616) between Project Managers' Leadership Competencies and Project Performance. However, the competency factors indicate different levels of correlation with the project Performance criteria. The factor "Communicate expectations" is the most critical Leadership Competency that influences each performance criteria. The study recommends that clients take competencies of project leaders seriously without abstracting the "communicate expectations" factor in order to improve project success. Wider leadership competence criteria such as, competency profiles, information management, professional development, leadership skills, and strategic leadership roles of project managers be considered in future study.

This paper shows how causes and mechanisms behind past information technology (IT) project failures can be used for systematic risk mitigation in new IT projects. This is significant because successful IT projects are needed to realise the benefit potential of digitalisation, whereas failed IT projects overspend resources and underdeliver benefits. In this paper we a) identify factors and causes that lead to IT project failure, b) analyse the consistency over time of the identified factors and causes, c) expose mechanisms of failure by analysing failure factors, causes, and common features of IT projects, and d) show how this knowledge can be used in IT project risk evaluations. The paper uses hermeneutic literature review, statistical analysis of failure factors in the literature, content analysis of the reviewed literature, and process tracing.

In light of rising global supply chain disruptions, firms must implement robust and agile supply chain strategies to retain performance. This study looks at the impact of Supply Chain Resilience (SCR) on Organizational Performance (OP), using Supply Chain Agility (SCA) as a mediating variable and Digital Transformation (DT) as a moderating factor. The results of structural equation modeling show a substantial positive association between SCR and OP (β = 0.447, p = 0.000), indicating that firms with strong resilience systems can better traverse supply chain uncertainties and improve performance. SCA mediates the SCR-OP link (β = 0.15, p = 0.000), highlighting the importance of agility in leveraging resilience for a competitive advantage. The study also demonstrates that DT moderates the Moreover, SCA is found to mediate the SCR-OP relationship (β = 0.15, p = 0.000), emphasizing the pivotal role of agility in transforming resilience into a competitive edge. The study also reveals that DT moderates the effect of SCR on OP (β = 0.087, p = 0.000), highlighting the importance of digital technologies in amplifying resilience-led performance outcomes. The model demonstrates strong explanatory power, with R² values of 0.364 for OP and 0.423 for SCA, and predictive relevance supported by Q² values of 0.261 and 0.209, respectively. Conclusively, results highlight the basic strategic importance pertinent to synergizing resilience, agility, and digital transformation to enhance supply chain effectiveness. Managerial implications include prioritizing investments in digital tools, comprehensive risk management systems, and agility-enhancing practices to develop resilient, future-ready supply chains. Future studies are encouraged to examine additional moderators—such as leadership style and environmental uncertainty—and mediators like knowledge management and supply chain collaboration, preferably through longitudinal designs across varied industry contexts. This study expands the evolving field of supply chain management, theory of resilience, and digital transformation by offering an integrated model to drive organizational performance in turbulent environments.

Project success, project management success, and project success criteria are pivotal concepts in modern project management, drawing considerable academic and professional interest. This paper critically evaluates two studies addressing the challenges of defining and measuring project success: Shokri-Ghasabeh and Kavousi-Chabok (2009) and Lamprou and Vagiona (2018). The first study employs a mixed-methods approach to explore conceptual ambiguities in project success and project management success, identifying stakeholder perspectives as central to resolving these ambiguities. Despite offering practical insights, the study’s findings are limited by a low survey response rate. The second study conducts an extensive literature review, categorizing over 20 success criteria and 400 critical success factors, emphasizing the need for context-sensitive evaluation frameworks. While theoretically robust, it lacks empirical validation. This evaluation compares the studies’ methodologies, findings, and contributions, highlighting their complementary strengths. The paper concludes by recommending a combined methodological approach and the development of a context-sensitive framework to enhance the understanding and application of project success criteria and factors in diverse contexts. These insights aim to bridge the gap between theory and practice in project management research and practice.

The construction and development sector is considered as the backbone of any growing economy. Globally, the construction industry (CI) has experienced significant growth alongside increasingly complex projects that involve multidisciplinary stakeholders such as clients, consultants and contractors, known as the 3Cs. Despite modern efforts towards digitalisation and the introduction of technology, this industry was among the most impacted by COVID-19 in many countries. The 3Cs have faced impediments in practicing their respective roles. This research utilises a mixed methodology approach by utilising an extensive literature review combined with statistical analysis to study the impacts on working practices of the 3Cs of the CI in Pakistan. The six major impact factors were related to planning and overhead cost, manufacturing and shipping, permit issuance, liquidated damages, cash flows, material availability and delivery. Among the six factors, delays in permit issuance and materials availability were the two global factors investigated in the study. The significance of the impact factors was further justified by comparative analysis with existing literature. The study further revealed that contractors were the most affected party within the 3Cs of the CI in Pakistan. The findings of this study are significant to tackle such a pandemic in the future, by suggesting effective emerging practices which may also be made and enforced as regulations by the government.

This paper aims to study the improvement of project success in organizations by integrating knowledge management strategies with project management practices in a typical project lifecycle. According to the Standish Group’s Chaos Report for 2009, only 32% of all surveyed projects are considered to be successful and are delivered on time, on budget, with the required features and functions. This could be an indication that project management practitioners have not fully acquired and transferred knowledge learned from past projects to ensure a higher success rate for current and future projects. Knowledge management is an emerging discipline and practice in organizations. This paper proposes an integrated model that combines knowledge management with project management to improve project success and thus contribute towards competitiveness and sustainability in organizations.

This study aims to determine the project management maturity level of four organisations in the Lesotho Water Sector. It assesses its influence on perceived project success by undertaking case studies in these organisations. It, therefore, contributes to the limited literature on project management maturity in the water sector in Africa. The results indicated that the average project management maturity was 2, with one organisation at a maturity level of 3. A total of 53% of executed projects were perceived as successful. The study found that highmaturity-level organisations tend to execute projects more successfully. Additional factors that may lead to project failure in this sector were identified. Altesaam 53% van uitgevoerde projekte is as suksesvol beskou. Die studie het bevind dat hoë-volwassenheid-vlak organisasies geneig is om projekte meer suksesvol uit te voer. Bykomende faktore wat tot projekmislukking in hierdie sektor kan lei, is geïdentifiseer.

This study investigates the impact of modern technology on photographic memory among university students at African Rural University, focusing on how digital tools influence memory retention and recall. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative memory assessments with qualitative interviews and surveys to explore students' experiences and perceptions. Findings indicate a complex relationship where extensive technology use-particularly smartphones correlate with diminished self-reported memory confidence and recall capabilities. Despite acknowledging that technology may hinder their innate memory abilities, students often rely on these tools for academic success. Visual and auditory memory tests revealed that many participants struggled with detailed recall, reinforcing concerns about cognitive overload. The study concludes that while technology offers organizational benefits, it may simultaneously impair natural memory functions, highlighting the need for balanced technology integration in educational practices. Recommendations include training on memory strategies, practice sessions, and promoting active recall techniques to enhance memory retention amidst technological reliance. Future research should explore the long-term effects of technology use on memory development.

The inevitable tollgate decision meeting when the project manager is asked to compromise the project plan in order to get a pass and move the project into execution stage. This thesis research studies the reasons and solutions for negotiation difficulties of the contents of the project plan between project managers and steering groups. Tough negotiations on resources commonly exist in many projects and many organizations and, in order to reach an agreement, project managers have no choice but to adjust the figures in the project plan to the demands. However, this adjustment quite often leads to the project not reaching its goal either in cost, time or quality. Project planning, as a part of project management, is a widely studied subject, but very few researchers have gone into the details of how project managers and steering committees can reach an alignment without unnecessary changes of the project plan at the decision meeting. Therefore, throughout the extensive review of existi...

The purpose of this study is to investigate current academic thinking regarding how cultural differences impact transformation success. It analyses cultural dimensions and other factors and how they correlate to project management. Using SCOPUS as a search engine peerreviewed academic papers from the period 2019-2023 were analysed as part of a systematic literature review. Results were gathered and grouped into themes as well as cultural dimensions for in-deep analysis and discussion. The results of this study found consensus on the negative impact of cultural diversity on project outcomes, but a significantly lower level of agreement with respect to the specifics of the impacts. Hofstede's dimensions of culture remain the most cited, but lack relatability. On the contrary, our results show that there is much more clarity regarding the type of actions recommended in order to mitigate the cultural issues raised. Furthermore, the identified findings related to recommended actions used to overcome the cultural-diversity-related issues have also shown that such actions can be successfully applied and assessed, with a relatively high level of confidence, regardless of the specific industry and/or organisational structure.

This study examines the impact of Big Data applications on various facets of organizational performance, specifically focusing on Business Success, Business Continuity, and Organization Sustainability. Data was collected through self-reported questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS AMOS, incorporating Pearson correlation tests and regression analyses. The results demonstrate that Big Data has a positive but generally weak correlation with these organizational aspects. Notably, mitigating risks and identifying hidden market trends stand out as the most significant factors for Business Success. Business continuity during unexpected disruptions and efficient resource allocation are crucial for Business Continuity. For Organization Sustainability, the direct impact of retrieved data on sustainable decisions and Big Data analytics for planning eco-sustainable futures are key. These findings underscore the potential of Big Data in enhancing organizational performance, suggesting areas where organizations can harness data for strategic advantages. Further research and broader datasets may offer deeper insights into these relationships.

Nowadays we witness to an incredible growth of complexity and uncertainty in projects environment, which makes it necessary to consider the factors that influence their success. The development of project management competences in organizations is an important factor to enhance the project management performance and consequently the organization performance. So, now we can find some standards that identify a group of competences that have impact in project success. The extent of this impact depends on several factors, including the type of projects. It is a fallacy to consider that all projects are alike and that the same tools can be used to manage them all. Managing projects with this attitude leads often to project failure because companies are using improper techniques for many of their activities. Firstly this study aimed to identify a set of key competencies that have more influence on projects success. But the main objective of this research was to associate competences or groups of competences to different types of projects. The list of 46 competences (technical, behavioral and contextual) provided by IPMA (International Project Management Association) was selected, and three dimensions of distinction of projects by types: application area, innovation and complexity. Data collection was done through an online questionnaire intended only for Portuguese project managers. A sample of 96 project managers was obtained, which identified 13 key competences for the majority of projects, mostly behavioral competences. Other 13 competences were found like the most frequently used to achieve success in the different types of projects. This sample shows a clear correlation between technical competences and project complexity. At the end are presented the limitations of the study as well as their implications for practice and theory, including suggestions for future work in the area.

A notion exists that organisations with higher levels of project management maturity execute projects more effectively and efficiently and so have a higher probability of achieving project success. This paper reports on a single case study that measured the project management maturity of four project management knowledge areas, and also investigated the impact of project management maturity on perceived project success in a mining operation. The study found that project management maturity plays a pivotal role in achieving project management deliverables. However, project management maturity alone is not sufficient to guarantee project success.
