During antiquity the Sages prohibited discussion and teaching of the Merkabah, and as a consequence the knowledge of gematria and other scribal methods of interpretation devolved into mere parlor games and were largely forgotten... but in ancient times gematria was a form of ancient mathematics that biblical scribes embedded into their literature to give their writings some valuable extra context on matters such as Creation, the Exodus, the Laws of the Torah, and God's special relationship with ancient Israel and Christianity.

In this study, I examined the interplay between Kabbalistic thought and political ideology among major Orthodox streams in Israel in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. My research focuses on the ideas and activities of three prominent Orthodox thinkers: Rabbis Yisrael Eliyahu Weintraub (1932-2010), Menachem Yehoshua Froman (1945-2013), and Yitzchak Feivish Ginsburgh (born 1944). These thinkers saw themselves as practitioners of Kabbalah, and through Kabbalistic concepts, ideas, structures, and language, they interpreted the political reality in Israel and guided their students on how to respond to it.

תהליכי הגירה והתיישבות יוצאי דופן, ומנהיגות בעלת מאפיינים חברתיים ופוליטיים ייחודיים, הביאו לכך שבהונגריה, ובה לבדה, נוצרו מעין שלוש תנועות יהודיות שונות זו מזו. בבירה בודפשט ובדרום המדינה גרו בעיקר יהודים מודרנים אשר ביקשו להתערות במרחב ההונגרי ולשם כך נטשו את אורח החיים המסורתי ואימצו רפורמות דתיות, לעתים מרחיקות לכת; בצפון מערב המדינה רוב היהודים שילבו אורח חיים מסורתי, שכלל הקפדה על שמירת מצוות, עם תרבות המערב; ובצפון מזרח הונגריה התרכזו שומרי מצוות שמרנים אשר דבקו במסורת, הביטו בחשש על העולם המודרני ודחו את אלה שביקשו להתקרב אליו. בין שלוש הקבוצות התפתחה מערכת יחסים מורכבת, והיא שהפכה את יהדות הונגריה ליוצאת דופן.

On October 28, 2023, only 21 days after the October 7th Hamas terrorist attacks that killed 1195 Israelis, IDF soldiers, and foreign citizens and left 251 hostage in the Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a speech in which he was quoted as saying: “Remember what Amalek did to you!” And Netanyahu’s cry, calling upon Yahweh’s commandment for Ancient Israelite holy war against the Canaanites and Amalekites of the Jewish Torah, has been echoed not only by Jewish Religious Zionists like Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, but by Christian Zionists like Jürgen Bühler and David Parsons, who claim that ‘the Spirit of Amalek’ has been reincarnated in the Islamist terrorists of Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas. But the hatred and violence of Ancient Israelite holy war, like the curse of Yahweh against Canaanites and Amalekites, the Jewish and Christian scriptures show, will only cause enormous suffering for the innocent civilians caught up in them---the Palestinian civilians of the Gaza Strip---and will finally recoil upon those who cast hatred and violence upon their enemies. Hence Christians should not follow the calls for Ancient Israelite holy war by those who subscribe to the doctrine: “Love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy,” but should remember the words of Jesus of Nazareth, who counseled them “to love thine enemies as thyself,” which is the only spiritual and moral teachings that can provide a way out of the hatred and violence of the Israel-Hamas War.

2025, İngiliz Mandası Döneminde Filistin’deki Yahudi Yeraltı Örgütleri ve Faaliyetleri

Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun Ortadoğu'daki varlığının son bulmasıyla İngilizler, bölgede başat güç konumuna yükselmişlerdir. İngilizler Osmanlı sonrası Filistin'de manda rejimi tesis etmiş ve bu rejim bölgede demografik durumu değiştiren politikalar izlemiştir. İngilizler 1917'de ilan edilen Balfour Deklarasyonu'na dayanarak bölgede Yahudi varlığını desteklemiştir. Fakat bölgede değişen demografik durumu kendi varlığına bir tehdit olarak gören yerli Filistinliler ile İngilizler tarafından desteklenen Yahudiler arasında gerginlikler şiddete dönüşmüştür. Bu şiddette, resmi Siyonist örgütün pasifliğini ve İngilizlerin Yahudi göçünü kısıtlayan kararlarına tepki gösterenler tarafında kurulan Yahudi yeraltı örgütleri rol oynamıştır. Çok geçmeden bu örgütler, İngilizlere yönelik terör faaliyetlerine girişmiş ve nihayetinde İngilizlerin bölgeden ayrılmasına neden olmuşlardır. Böylece bölgedeki korumasız sivil Filistinlilere karşı katliamlar gerçekleştirmişlerdir. Bu katliamlar İsrail Devleti kurulduktan sonra da devam ederek günümüze kadar gelmiştir. Bu çalışma en genel anlamda İsrail Devleti'nin Filistinlilere yönelik şiddetinin temeli neye dayandığını araştırmaktadır. Nitel araştırma yöntemine dayanan bu çalışma, İsrail Devleti kurulmadan önce İngiliz Mandası döneminde Filistin'de faaliyet gösteren Yahudi yeraltı örgütleri olan Etzel, Lehi ve Palmach gruplarının ideolojileri ve eylemlerini konu almaktadır. İsrail Devleti kurulduktan sonra bu örgütler yeni devletin savunma kuvvetinin omurgasını oluşturmuş ve liderleri de devletin politikasında söz sahibi olmuşlardır. Böylece bu örgütlerin ideolojileri günümüze kadar İsrail politik sisteminde varlığını devam etme fırsatı bulmuşlardır. Bu bağlamda çalışma, Yahudi yeraltı örgütlerinin sahip oldukları ideolojilerden yola çıkarak İsrail Devletinin Filistinlilere uyguladığı şiddetin anatomisini anlamada bir yol gösterici olmaktadır. Bununla birlikten bu çalışma günümüzde iktidarda olan Likud siyasi hareketinin Filistinlilere karşı uyguladığı şiddetin arka planında hangi ideolojilerin olduğunu ortaya koymaktır. Ayrıca bu çalışma literatürde ihmal edilen devlet öncesi Yahudi yeraltı örgütleri hakkında derinlemesine bir araştırma sunarak literatüre önemli bir katkı sağlamaktadır.

'חרבות ברזל' באמצעות ניתוח ראיונות עומק. הוא מנתח את הגורמים המרכזיים שהשפיעו על
התפתחות השחיקה, ומציע פרקטיקות יישומיות להתמודדות עימה ולצמצום הופעתה. המחקר
מזהה עשרה ביטויים מרכזיים של שחיקה במלחמה – חלקם מייצגים את ראשיתה של התופעה
ואחרים את שלביה המתקדמים. הגורמים לשחיקה נותחו על פי שישה צירים מרכזיים : עומס יתר,
שליטה, תגמול, שייכות, הוגנות וערכים. מהמחקר עולה חשיבותם של טיפוח מנהיגות קרבית,
יצירת ודאות בעולם של חוסר ודאות, שיתוף וקבלה של עצות לביסוס תחושת שליטה, הענקת
תמיכה במעגלי שייכות רחבים והצורך הקריטי בזמנים למנוחה פיזית ונפשית.

This volume comprises an edition and translation of one of the earliest specimens of Jewish programmatic commentary on the book of Esther. The commentary’s author, Salmon b. Yerōḥām, is a central early figure in the “Golden Age” of Karaism (late-9th–11th cent.), a Jewish scripturalist and penitential movement centered at that time in Jerusalem. Among the various facets of Salmon’s commentary that we explore in our introduction are his translation technique, exegetical method, homiletical emphases, and polemical concerns. We also explore his use of sources, both explicit and tacit (in the latter case to a surprisingly broad degree as regards rabbinic sources and Saadia Gaon), as well as the reception of Salmon’s commentary in subsequent Jewish exegetical tradition.

leaving Jerusalem behind. Between the start and the finishing line of this project, I learned French, studied in French as a visiting student in Sciences-Po, immigrated twice, fathered three children, and reinvented myself professionally. We landed back in Jerusalem in the middle of Israel's 2014 war on Gaza and the completion of this project was further delayed by a raging pandemic and yet another Israeli war on Gaza and an unprecedented wave of internal ethnic, intercommunal violence fueled by national-religious sentiments. As expected, writing this dissertation took much longer than expected. I could never have done it without the support and patience of my advisors Alain Dieckhoff and Yitzhak Reiter and the flexibility of Sciences-Po's Ecole doctorale. I wish to thank them warmly. המאמר בוחן את השינוי ההיסטורי בתפיסת הציונות – מפרויקט לאומי-סוציאליסטי אחיד למודל רב-תרבותי דמוקרטי. לפיו הציונות טרום-1948 כללה מגוון זרמים (רפואי, דתי, ספרותי), שאוחדו על ידי מפא"י לאחר קום המדינה לכדי מנגנון ממלכתי אחיד. מחאות שהתרחשו עקב היות מדינת ישראל מדינת הגירה חשפו את הכשל בהנחת השוויון הסוציאליסטי, והובילו עם הזמן להתפוררות האחידות ההגמונית שמפא"י שאפה לבסס. המאמר מראה כיצד הרב-תרבותיות הישראלית, המאופיינת במאבקי זהות ופוליטיקה שבטית, אינה סוף הציונות אלא התמרתה מקו מדיניות שלטוני אחיד לתהליך דמוקרטי מתמשך של מו"מ פוליטי בין קבוצות כשהתיאוריה של פוקו בדבר ממשליוּת באה לידי ביטוי כפועל היוצא של הציונות בצורתה החדשה. המסקנה היא שהציונות החדשה אינה אידיאולוגיה סגורה, אלא מסגרת דמוקרטית גמישה המכילה סתירות – תהליך המבטיח את שרידותה בעידן הפוסט-מודרני.

Yeshayahu Leibowitz and Ovadia Yosef delivered talks to diverse audiences for many years, leaving thousands of hours of audio and video recordings available for review. In research on philosophical writings, the prevailing approach is that speech-oriented events are “occasional layers,” while the examining of written materials is the primary way to understand a worldview. The article challenges this assumption and proposes a new method for examining Zionist political theology based on an examination of the performative expressions of political theology. The sensitive examination of Leibowitz and Yosef’s oral teachings, as presented in the article, emphasizes, in particular, the performative poetics of oral teachings. In his talks, Yosef attributed the success of the State of Israel to divine intervention characterizing the entirety of sacred history, while Leibowitz described the state as a political phenomenon with no connection to divine intervention. To separate theology from Zionism, Leibowitz chose outrageous and ironic formulations such as “we are fed up of being ruled by goyim”; Yosef, on the other hand, chose parodic and agenda-inspired formulations that subjugate Zionism to divine providence. But despite the obvious differences in content and performance, there is a surprising similarity between the professor from Riga and the Rishon LeZion from Baghdad when it comes to their attitude towards Zionism: the article reveals that both saw it as a positive instrument for organizing the lives of Jews and opposed the claim that Zionism and the state necessitate the reorganization of a theological system that regards the state as “The nascent flowering of our redemption.”

The contribution of Aviezer Ravitzky (1945) to contemporary Jewish thought is an important example of historical-critical consideration of various religious attitudes that have developed within the Jewish tradition regarding the lived experience of peoplehood, always suspended between nomadism and sedentarism, history and meta-history, dispersed diasporic communities and independent commonwealth. Ravitzky’s work focuses on the analysis of the Zionist revolution and the impact it had on religious perspectives on the land of Israel and Jewish political theology. Contemporary Orthodox theological responses to the nationalist movement are presented in a comprehensive conceptual model, connecting pragmatic existential positions to models of religious thought. The paper aims to critically examine these trends to retrace the intellectual journey that led Ravitzky to propose an alternative paradigm of existential consciousness for contemporary religious Zionism, seeking to solve its dilemma between perpetual exile and imperfect redemption. Ravitzky’s scholarship is analysed in the context of his left-wing leaning, showing that he attempted to find a political pragmatical but still Orthodox response to Zionism outside the confines of messianism.

This article deals with history education in the course of Israel’s first two
decades and the previously underexplored struggle between State Religious
Education (SRE) and the State Education (SE) system. The constraints of
history education within the SRE by Israel’s Ministry of Education resulted
in the suppression of religious elements that informed history education in
the Mizrachi Religious Zionist movement. Challenging established historiographical views, I introduce a novel periodization of Israel’s educational history, identifying the early 1960s as a turning point in SRE history education. In contrast to the ideological relaxation and pedagogical changes that took place within the Ministry of Education, SRE emerged as a cohesive and robust system. This trend coincided with profound ideological shifts within the Religious Zionist community, prompting a re-evaluation of Religious Zionist education and a call for its expansion beyond a narrow sectoral focus.

This article examines the motivations and strategies employed by liberal Orthodox rabbis who have adopted a more lenient stance on homosexual relationships and certain forms of sexual contact between men within the boundaries of halakha. Drawing on previously unpublished rabbinic writings, the article offers a nuanced analysis of this evolving discourse.
Beyond analyzing the rabbis' motivations and interpretive strategies, the article explores the broader philosophical, sociological and gender implications of their lenient approach. From a halakhic perspective, the article examines how these rabbis have employed novel interpretive methods to justify their conclusions.
